The story of the Vet who hit a bong with no tolerance whatsoever…. It’s obvious why he had problems.
Why would his girlfriend let him hit a bong knowing it will probably fuck him up?
I feel that story shouldn’t have been included. That’s like telling a story of some person blacking out with alcohol with no tolerance after 3 shots.

So much wrong with the reporting in this story it seems well below the standard of the NYT. The interviews with the woman who had her gall bladder removed and the soldier both ascribe all issues to marijuana, when at best they create more questions than they answer.
We need more research into the long term use of cannabis, but putting out anecdotal evidence such as this, framed in this way, is not going to help.

Lots of cognitive dissonance in the comments. Marijuana's image as "safe" is based on research from over half a century ago, when THC content was orders of magnitude lower and CBD balanced out the THC. Ironic how the ban on federal research made it easier to legalize/popularize - ofc decriminalization is good, but the risks of it are real.

Marijuana use seems endemic now, especially by men. It’s hard to have a relationship with someone who is checked out all the time. I used to beg for him to stop but instead I just moved on. It’s sad. I’m not straight-edge I am open minded and believe once in a while is fine for lots of things but this drug is absolutely addictive. Just watching someone trying to quit (let alone tolerate their come down) is really hard. This is not like quitting coffee folks! Takes like two weeks to return to baseline.

I had trouble hearing this article over the abundant use of the incorrect term "marijuana" instead of the correct term cannabis. The word marijuana was coined by a government looking to villify cannabis by associating it with Mexican illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. I myself am not a user since I was in my 20s but am very familiar with its use. However I find it hilarious that the name of the disorder of overuse uses the name Cannabis but the presenter then uses the word Marijuana over and over. Please research your topic fully before presenting it as you appear ignorant in your reporting.

Like any drug, marijuana can be abused and it can make people lazy and apathetic. It’s difficult to control use and it can cause problems. Psychological dependence. It can skew your perception and make difficult tasks more challenging. It’s better to keep the mind sharp and only indulge on special occasions, if you must. Just be aware of all the pitfalls. Weed today is not the same as 80’s era weed.

I want to know more about this woman she interviewed. She was having that much physical pain, talked to Drs, had many tests, removed her gallbladder, and she was still taking the edibles? Hard to believe a Dr did not suggest to stop taking everything and find her baseline. Any drug has side effects. I feel like you could have started with the premis that most of the professionals you talked to suggest we should legalize cannabis, instead of till the end of this 30 min audio. I can believe a doctor would not think of the medication because a similar incident happened to my mom. The drug in question was not marijuana, but her blood pressure medication. She had taken it regularly for at least several years before she had an adverse reaction that led to her face swelling up like a balloon. The first time it happened, the doctors thought it was an allergic reaction to the food she was eating and they were able to get the swelling down. It would occur two more times before they took a look at the medication and realized one of the drugs had a slight probability of causing a severe allergic reaction and that the probability increased the longer you were on the drug. They switched her medication around and so far, she has not had that kind of allergic reaction happen to her again.

Cannabis should be absolutely just as legal and easy to obtain anywhere as alcohol currently is. No exceptions. It's so easy: As legal and easy to obtain/use as alcohol currently is. Why hold relatively benign, often healing cannabis to any sort of irrational, stricter double standard than perfectly legal alcohol?

    • @ZackMester

That’s not the point. The point is that, at this rate, it is likely to become as easy to obtain as alcohol in the near future and it is being lionized as a miracle drug, but in reality, it has consequences and addictive tendencies just like any drug. Also, big businesses will use it to exploit people just like they have with alcohol and cigarettes.

I think perhaps what you're missing is that there're 350 million people in the USA alone and roughly 7 billion world wide. To assume that anyone else at all would act a certain way, based on your singular, very anecdotal experience appears extremely ignorant of the diversity in populace.
Just because you think the fella's girlfriend should've seen his reaction coming doesn't mean she actually should've. She isn't you, she has an entire other life of experience and what the article was telling you was the tiniest shred of her existence.
Reports and articles like this completely control the narrative within themselves. It's their job as opinion pieces to control how you view the topics. So if the writers want you to think of the girlfriend as just like you, they'll work to do that but it doesn't mean she's anything like you it just just means the writers want you to relate to their points become more driven.

10:20 Well yeah, you can also be addicted to caffeine, caffeine addiction presents differently than any other addiction and also isn't taken as seriously as opioid addiction and shouldn't be. Even though it's a real addiction, the symptoms and cost/benefit trade offs are in an entirely different class than opioids. The same is true of Cannabis. Cannabis addiction isn't anything like opioid addiction. People who deny that you can be addicted to Cannabis mostly don't want to see it smeared with the publics at best nascent and at worst completely wrong headed understanding of addiction.

What's legal to possess and consume in over half of the populated areas of The United States should not make you a criminal in states still being governed by woefully ignorant prohibitionist politicians. Cannabis consumers in all states deserve and demand equal rights and protections under our laws that are currently afforded to the drinkers of far more harmful, dangerous and deadly, yet perfectly legal, widely accepted, endlessly advertised and even glorified as an All American pastime, alcohol.
