Thanks a ton for this. So many tutorials out there for using the wizard which makes you select a pre-existing footprint as a base, and I was trying to create something that didn't have anything close to a standard footprint. Thanks again!

Yes, eagle cad uses hierarchical design concept. At any point in the process, you can change a pin ordering, update the part, and if everything is linked correctly, you can automatically update your schematic and the change will be applied to every occurrence of the part.
