3. Have a positive mindset when learning
I wouldn't be too strict on the input part. If you feel comfortable speaking even though you can barely have a conversation, great, do it! I never felt any shame about speaking at a beginners level. Just don't put any pressure on yourself.

@@rastapopoulos7870 yes, I agree.. For me , speaking is much easier than listening.. it's quite ineffective to communicate when I can speak but could not understand what my partner say.. and from my experience, when our listening ability get better, our speaking follows naturally..

Although the best way to learn a language would be full immersion, nowadays we have so many resources available to us on the internet that we really don't need to. We just need to be proactive and like Veronika said consistency.
You can fully immerse. Without living in the country. If you create your own environment. listen to it from the time you wake up until you go to sleep. Don't watch anything in your native tongue. All your time is spent in the language listening reading exc. Italki to practice speaking later on. You can create a bubble and cut yourself off from your native language.

Very impressive English for someone who is not a native speaker and never been to the states. My parents moved to the us in their 20s back in the early 80s. Their English has a thick accent and limited vocab. Her English proves it takes more than living in an English speaking country. You really have to work and actively learn. Thanks for sharing guys. Currently learning Korean Japanese and Khmer. Thank you for the motivation!
I agree with the point you make, that it takes more the immersion to improve your second language to an advanced level, but you need to engage with that language. Veronica's level of English is outstanding.

Hi, Steve! It's my first trying to leave a comment to your video. I totally felt kind of confidence after watching this chat because I've been learning English for more than 20 years without leaving Japan and I was a little bit ashamed of it, because everyone who get to know that I can speak some English ask me " which country did you go?" Or " how did you study English staying in Japan?" Now I knew that going abroad is not necessary to learn languages. Thanks so much for this video and making me feel more confident!!

Wow Veronika! I honestly would think you were a Native speaker- perhaps in a really long convo one word might slip up...but in US many folks have foreign language parents and so may have an accent as a result. I honestly have never had that feeling before with a non-Native speaker of English.
Your English is amazing especially that you haven't lived in an English speaking majority country. Very impressive indeed. Often non-natives mess up in the little connecting words and you just flow right along... You should feel very proud of yourself!
She doesn't "study" per se. It's just A LOT of input (reading and listening in the target language).
I loved it, i've been studying english for 8 months, i'm satisfy with my result because the people understand me and i understand the people, so exists comunication, however i have to improve my grammar and my speaking skills, for example: I understood perfectly this video, but i can't talk like them at all, so i'll change the focus and improve what is necessary.
This video is highly educational to learn any language. She connected with the language in so many ways. I am learning Spanish while actually living in Colombia and this video opened my eyes as to learn language fluently! Thank you both! 😊

Amazing! Her English sounds so natural. I know lots of people who live in the US who don’t know how to speak English at all even though they have lived here for over 10 years.
They do not all have the need to learn English, nor the time to learn it/. Most of them have never been to college or even finished high school.

Going to or finishing school has no connection with learning a language!!! Even if you aren’t able to read, you can learn a language by listening/talking. But « not having time » or not feeling the need to learn is mostly the main reason.
@@eliezerkraiman48 Everyone has time there's 24 hours in a day. It's just not important to them then. You prioritize what matters to you. An hour or two a day is enough to reach fluency.
Yeah it was the same in UK when I lived there and it's the same here in Finland.

it depends what you mean by "fluency." I know countless people for whom English is a second language. They consider themselves to be fluent in English, and they are - in a functional sense. They can buy train tickets, say good morning, ask how much something costs etc. But as soon as you depart from what I call "book speak" they tend to struggle, especially with regional colloquial speech (which is how most people actually converse). I think you can become functionally fluent without full immersion, but if you want true fluency then I do feel you need several years of Immersion , during which you must actively be seeking to challenge yourself. This becomes even more true with regard to the Asian, and sub-continental languages.

Wonderful! Congratulations to both of you. I'm greek, learned little english at school but mostly on my own. I've learned a little serbian by myself and now I learn swedish using any source I can find on the internet.
I do believe that hard work and a lot of input is mandatory to achieve success. From my experience, living in a country where almost nobody speaks English along with the fact that I've never been outside of Cuba I've learn English by reading, listening and lately, ever since internet was a possibility for us though UA-cam channels in English. Most importantly is you motivation and how much fun you want to have with the language. I've done the same thing with German and I wouldn't say it's the best but I'm able to communicate and express myself towards people. Steve you've been a huge inspiration to lern as much as I can in languages that i want to speak. Thanks for your knowledge.
I came across Veronika on the Language come up channel with Mark. Checked out her English channel after and was amazed! Listening to her speak English really motivates me to improve my spoken Russian.

I've been learning English since April 2020. As far now, my English is not perfect, but, people can understand and I can talk. I don't think that I'm fluency because I really need to learn more vocabulary. However, I'm really proud of myself. Like Veronika, I live in a country that just 5 or 7 percent of the population speak English. The majority speaks just Portuguese
Russian is one of the languages I've started learning I'm starting with the alphabet first then probably be starting to fully immerse myself next year.
Im also learning russian, and really, just start now. It's never too soon to start

@@emarcostar well. It's like any language, im not really caring much about the grammar, just immersing myself with it.
The grammar may be hard, but i wait until later with trying to learn it,and it will be easier once you understand the language behind it, and can relate it to examples u know from your immersion

The easiest way is to think in that language, speak to yourself, write diary in that language. I think pronunciation is the basis if you want to achieve a visible level.

When I was a kid I didn’t enjoy learning foreign languages either but I started learning Russian when I was 17 or 18 because I wanted to connect more with my ancestry. I had no one to teach me so, I spent hours learning the Cyrillic script and sounds in Russian. My French is only beginner level as well. And I started learning Swedish again. There were not many resources available in Swedish growing up but more are available now. Still hard to find resources at times but not impossible. Many resources available in Russian though.

Although I disagree with some of the collective techniques in the early years of Russian education, Miss Mark clearly is a product of an excellent education even though she has a natural talent. By contrast, the current U.S. public school education does not stress discipline which is supported by memorization and compulsory homework.

Veronika's English is amazing, and her Russian accent is nearly indetectable. The ease with which she speaks shows just how much effort she has put into becoming fluent. Well Done!
Probably important that she laid the groundwork as a child. She built on that groundwork as an adult.
I only feel complete fluency in the 2 language that I’ve learned as a little child, first Italian and then going at school in French.
I would say I can swim in any sea, calm, rough, deep, in these languages.
During my teenage years, I learned Dutch and English, I read and speak them fluently, even if with a certain accent, but I never felt that I could acquire them as what I’ve reached in Italian and French. I know a lot less active vocabulary there and I am not always comfortable with all the grammar,

She's awesome although she's still learning as she said that she listens to podcast and news 'cause of the hosts that are native speakers. She taked about her teacher who really helped her so if you guys are learning english don't be afraid to make mistakes, she was supposed to say ( i was grateful to her but not grateful for her so you can be grateful for what someone does for you for example: i was grateful for her support.) But she is really great and she speaks english like a native speaker to an extent.
Although I can completely understand what you both say, I still couldn’t express the same idea as you do. I don’t know how much inputs do I need to get to achieve the same English expression level as you do.

I think here is more about eagerness to copy accent and pronunciation rather than ability to speak any languages. But of course, you should work hard to succeed, that's true.
Remember: Consistency over intensity.
It's not necessary to be in the country where it's spoken but for me it's what makes language learning fascinating. I wouldn't enjoy learning a language on my own, even though it can be done.
