🌱25 Years of Success With No-Till & Cover Crops! 🍀 🌽

- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Come along as Myron Sylling shares his journey into Soil Health including 25 plus years of No-Till along with cover cropping six years on all of their 1,400 acres.
Myron has been successfully & profitably no-till farming with his brother, Mikal, and father, Karl near Spring Grove, MN. While solid yields are important, net profit per acre and soil health benefits are what drives the Sylling family. The family are also huge believers in trying to have a live root 24/7 - 365.
This spring they frost seeded nearly 600 acres using their fertilizer buggy in early March. Over the past few springs, they've frost seeded a couple hundred acres annually. They've also experimented with 60" corn, enjoy planting all of their crops into vibrant green cover crops, and this year are looking into other ways to get cover crops established earlier. 🌽
Additionally water infiltration rates range from 6-10" per hour under their management compared to others that can only infiltrate 0.5 to 1.0 inches per hour. This is primarily because Myron, Mikal and Karl follow most of the soil health principles and refuse to use tillage.
So join us for this quick video on how and why the Syllings love to No-till and cover crop!

I love this field without bare earth.
That’s great, building soil is so important, hopefully more farmers will do this without simply round-up and GMO’s...
Very good Lance. I'm agronomist in Brazil, and agree with you the importance of cover crop to preserve soil and increase
the harvest.
Rye-T-On.
We owe it to the generations that follow us to care for and regenerate our soils.
It's just getting started with what's possible!
Right!
Nice!
It's an amazing practice that nature has been doing since the day after dot. I really wish the farmers around where I live would at least look into it. Seeing bare fields of dirt makes my soul sad... I appreciate the video, cheers mate!!
I've adopted it. Work with mother nature, not against her.
Keep it up good work!
Thanks Brian!
Myron and his family have a deep appreciation for the soil and to always be learning.
Thankful to be learning alongside some awesome farmers!
BEST...Lance
Thans your information
Did you just say G'day folks? Ahhh Minnisota (Southern Canada), that explains it.
😂
Interested in these practises. Just curious how u get the crop u want to harvest to grow with the competition of cover crop without glyphosate application?. Thanks
I’d like to pitch this to the farmers farming our land in north eastern MO, what are the simplest cover crops to start with that won’t cause a lot of issues when it’s time to terminate them in the spring?
Cereal rye, winter wheat and triticale are solid options but depends on objectives.
Are they grazing cover crops or cover crop residues? And how much diversity are they at so far? 3-5 way blends or have they gotten over 8 way blends?
Great question!
There aren't any cows on this farm.....yet!
Mostly 1-3 way mixes that are mostly comprised of winter cereals though Myron has tried applying cover crops mixes w radishes earlier in fall via airplane.
With time I and trying newer techniques (inner seeding and possibly drone seeding) there will be huge opportunities to increasing seed mix diversity and vary the timing.
thanks for the questions.
surely the land there can produce much much more then it did before with all that organic matter building up above and below that soil
Why do three people give this video a thumbs down when his results speak for themselves?
Among NUMEROUS possibilities, a dislike might prevent similar video type recommendations for uninterested individuals; stop being so narrow minded!
What a stupid comment, if people are not interested in the subject then jog on and look at something else!
Well clearly the massive herbicide company's will dislike this. Also the theives which make the fertilizer will dislike this method. I farm 400 ac and have switched, wow the dirt turns into soil fast. However we have a long way to go.
@@01mustang05: Hi Some one baby, just go and lie down in a dark room for a while and you will feel a whole lot better.
@@dequavisjones4869 Agreed!
Im invited to a talk show in my country about regenerative practices and im a bit over my depth , any resources about what cover crops to plant before what main crops, times to plant, clear data like how many seeds per acre would be greatfull, it gets national coverage if i accept it so you can do good in a part of europe if you could help me in any way
Look for Dave Brant, Gabe Brown and Green Cover Seed here on UA-cam. Their all a great wealth of information and include important stats. Hopefully this helps?
How many lbs/ac ofvrye did you broadcast in march?
Good day Mark,
Thanks for the question.... pretty sure Myron was right around 1 bu/ac.
May I see the soil after 25 years condition? Please may I know.
Be pretty sure it's high in o.m.
No ones a John deer fan, they have no other options.
So is a cover crop a live plant or the leaves or sown crop laid out on top of a field?
It's live. Then you just knock it down and plant through it. That's how to build up your soil.
@@vivalaleta so what do you mean by knock it down?
@@ChanceChelios Here is the guy to answer your questions on cover crops. I could listen to him all day...sometimes I do?

Whats ph?
No till = no yields. if they did tillage they would be growing 280 bushel corn and 80 bushel beans.. ask me how I know
What’s he doing with the drill?
Drilling 😁
Why are you still just growing soy and corn? DIVERSIFY.
