Bill Hicks In Edinburgh

- Bill Hicks on Edinburgh Live (I think). I thought I'd put this up, as it's much better quality than the one previously available.
Hicks fans beware, the comments are loaded with idiots who half-wittedly think that Bill faked his death, to become right-wing, fear-mongering, exploiter of the mentally ill, Alex Jones.
As a 21 year old in 1992 in Scotland one of my College classmates said he had tickets to see this guy called Bill Hicks. Asked if I fancied going along, I said nah. Unlesss it was Billy Connolly I wasn't interested. He said if I didn't go I would regret it forever. So I went and my God it was just amazing. He just blew me away, everything he said just made sense especially the Gulf War, George Bush stuff. I watch his DVD every 6 months or so and what he said then is still relevant.
Glad you made the right choice!
Connolly was a legend, no doubt; but Hicks was unplugged.
Billy Connelly is Billy..he's done it..&,Your Comment..Was very sweet..You should Pass that on in every possible way..ie;Dave Chapple..et al..Lol to all Real Genuis .Always. :-)(Ib N.Zealand.cold n yrs info 1.good ever gonna come here..(Dunedin S.island)Need Bill /Dave/,Seth..et al..
I Don’t get jealous but, I’m jealous
Hi Delbert , Chadwick here. Im your age, never been to Scotland but want to visit. Can you tour me? Btw I love "still game" my moms not scottish but shes just like Isa!
My God, I never realized how much Leary ripped him off. It's almost sick.
Just kidding, by the way. That was my belligerent YT alter ego. They're talking about Dennis Leary. Are you really not familiar or are you messing with me?
It was a long time ago, as Hicks has been dead for 21 years, but Louis C.K. has also come out and said that Leary ripped off what was a bit about 'being an asshole'. Dennis Leary turned this into his 'I'm an Asshole' song that pretty much earned him the notoriety back in the day which brought him the success he has enjoyed through the present. There's an interview here on YT where Louis talks about it, if you care, but there you go.
+shadetree maniac wow, i heard louis' version after leary's and always thought it was the other way.... sucks to see leary like, well, dane cook now hahah
+shadetree maniac Hicks isn't dead. Hicks just changed his name to Alex Jones and now works making news with "InforWars".
+Patrick Michael Excuse me? Other way around dude...Sorry. I thought you were referring to his Psychedelic drug rap (Tim Leary) not Dennis Leary. You're right. Dennis did rip him off but that's pretty much acknowledged.
I can't believe all the negative comments on this thread! Bill Hicks was one of a kind! Funny! Great Guy. He's one of my all time favs personally. ❤
Introduced by a 12 year old Jack Dee.
Bill in Scotland. Wish I'd been lucky enough to have seen him. We lost a third eye.
"Your denial is beneath you, and thanks to the use of hallucinogenic drugs, I see through you" , briljant ;-)
Bill Hicks got a shout out on his 10th anniversary of his death in UK Parliament.
But, of course, Bill Hicks did nothing but trash America every chance he got, particularly in the United Kingdom... he was a big hit with the UK Parliament.
😂🤣 ……RIIIIIIIGHT
raise the rooftime?
I caught that too lmao
I think Jack was a little star-struck
forgot the 'it's' and pause between 'roof' and 'time'!
Raise the roof time
Yeah, I was like; "WTF did he just say?" lol
jmcieslak0 It's not easy hearing Jack Dee say that. Made me feel queazy.
jmcieslak0 It's the best time.
Raise it up!!
I thought he was trying to say "please raise the rooftops"
I love Hicks, and I think the most amazing thing about him is that he built a huge legacy on relatively little material. Seriously, about 2 hours of stuff rinsed and repeated. But every second is pure gold.
@Granpda Corey Spoken like a true fanboy; ''his message transcends comedy; it even transcends reality. he is a real prophet to the few who are willing to listen with open ears'' 😂 If only we were a little smarter to get his comedy ....lmao! Hicks never said anything that was that original or cutting-edge. Go listen to one of the real masters of comedy like Bruce or Carlin, their comedy is much more transcending than anything Hicks ever said on a stage.
It’s funny how the Scottish audience didn’t realize how cold “five below zero” was
Zach InTheHat
For them, that's equivalent to 23 degrees Fahrenheit.
Using farenheit is comparable to someone doing math with Roman numberals X, V, D, M , etc, instead of using the modern numbers.....
Simo Haha that would be dope if the US decided to switch to Roman numerals
@@zachinthehat1707 Lol that would go hand in hand with still using farheneit though. Imagine the confusion in chemistry classes then. You would have to 1. switch from inches/yard and all that nonsense to metric system, then 2. switch from farheneit to celsius, then 3. switch from roman numerals to 0,1,2... numbers. lol
@@777lucifero Why because it's more accurate?
And to think that today, he wouldn't be allowed to smoke on stage... I think that somewhere out there, Bill Hicks is glad to be gone.
+Ikmel A.A.A. (Saga Gemini) I dunno about that. Saw bill in Edinburgh 92, the Queens hall I think. Anyway no smoking in the main hall where bill is performing, big signs everywhere. Bill walks on stage reaches for his cigarettes and lighter, tells everyone in the audience to light up if they so desire. He then says to the venue staff " We will have this show in the damn street outside if you want. But I am gonna smoke, you wont stop me." Big cheer from the audience. Bill was a one off.
+Dry Bokes I bet the promoter didn't pay him though
+Dry Bokes, I was just about to say, I doubt that Bill would have adhered to the no smoking rule of somewhere he played.
some comedians can do that though.. Its all about ur attitude and how much the place REALLY needs ur performance.. Dave Chappelle lights up blunts n cigarettes no matter where hes at.. Joe Rogan said that Dave gets them kicked out of clubs n bars n shit like that ALL the time
Most non smoker drive cars. ever thought about that.
"...It takes more energy to point that out than to leave me alone."
A comic genius gone too soon
Lee Kee hes been playing a new character for the last 20 years or so goes by the name of Alex Jones. Bill Hicks was sheep-dipped
Still alive, His name is Alex Jones, same person. Gz
"Our next guest is an outspoken genius."
We need Bill more than ever ! Apart from Dave Chappelle and Doug Stanhope the world of comedy is dead RIP William Melvin hicks 🙏🙏
Bill Burr tells it like is.
bad crowd
Did ya come here for the crowd?
Coolest guy on the planet 🌏 😎, cheers from Taranto 🇮🇹 italy
I didn't even know Jack Dee can be that young... I thought he was born 40
Thumbed up for Bill's gags, and also for your description of the upload. Especially the last sentence. .
tough audience :)
The door is a jar. No man, it's a door.
This is Bill Hicks.
This is CNN
This is UA-cam!!!
THIS. IS. SPARTAAAAA!!!
This is your brain. And this is your brain on drugs.
Aka: Alex Jones
What a genius.. Love this guy
This world needs more people like Bill Hicks
Hicks and Jones shared a friend and manager. He thought JONES was the funniest man he ever knew. Reconcile that.
Yeah... he was laughing at Jones... not with him. There's a difference.
@@RstGamingReviews They're the same person. Bill Hicks faked his death to play "Alex Jones" as controlled opposition for the enemy.
Bill Hicks .... A most brilliant and thoughtful man ..
True friendship. :)
"Friends don't let friends pass up a Bill Hicks gig."
Thank you for posting this! Never saw that particular performance before!!
I think he looks his best here, well dressed, fairly healthy looking., and a bit of a tan.
The mullet though.
Very dark comedy, it's interesting and thought provoking tho.
For Hicks this is extremely mild. Still funny as hell and high quality
“But how can a door be a jar??”
If you’re on drugs, it can be anything it likes.
They took this man out
I agree
OFC just like Bob Marley (some CIA on death bed admited it some time ago)
Josef Mandel Correct.
Indeed.
A cigarette says: Today you turn me into ashes, but tomorrow is my turn.
Heavy smoking took this man out
genius is as genius does, and bill was a genius on why we are slow to accept what genius is, at least some of us figuered that out.... thank you mr hicks..
+Pat Brennan He's sooo good, he can ACT as Alex Jones
Kind of fitting that at the end of this video, the intro to "The Twilight Zone" comes on. That had to be in the back of Bill's mind while performing for the majority of American audiences at the time.
Too short, too short. Simply the best there is (was). RIP Mr. Hicks...
Hicks with a Tandy reference. Beautiful.
For American audiences I’m sure he said Sharper Image.
@Batpod05 It's probably because UK audiences of the time didn't whoop like Yahoos, nor did they mic the crowds in the way that they do now. Remember, Bill's reception resulted in him playing the UK a lot and becoming a big comedy star, whereas he was largely ignored in the US. Had cancer not seen him off, he would likely have had his own series in the UK, and his deserved, worldwide recognition would not have been posthumous. You know how it is, you don't what you've got until it's gone.
Can someone not just look very similar to someone else? Why do they have to be the same person? People on these comments are insane.
They have the same best friends as well. And the same cameraman Kevin Booth.
olli tuovinen they're both from Texas too, they could be related.
Bill wasn’t originally from Texas. He’d have a field day with the AJ cult.
Ha ha, "well I'm definitely not doing them with you!"
I don't ever recall seeing this at all, and I have a lot of his stuff. Thanks very much for uploading this...you have some great vids. I also love Kitchens of Distinction. I have uploaded some Bill Hicks stuff from one of his last shows. Take a look.
Thanks again!
Bill Hicks George Carlin Eddie Murphy genius stand-ups. Thanks
I was fortunate enough to spend a year with Bill, in Houston, before he got famous & left for New York. I was his coke dealer.
charles marshall you still deal I’m Kidding but that’s cool man
For real?! Got any stories you'd be kind enough to share?
"The door is a-jar" Lmao! Genius!
How he changed british comedy..jack dee certainly taking lessons.
Wrong they loved him and got him ! it was a big arena they laughed a lot I was there !
I never pictured Alex Jones as being this funny.
He can be, just not intentionally
Thank you for the kind words about Alex Jones. Please spread the word far and wide my friend. :)
knelsond You morons show up on every single Bill Hick's video. I'll leave the rebuttal to Bill. "You know, some people believe that they're Napoleon. That's fine. Beliefs are neat. Cherish them, but don't share them like they're the truth."[
a.fro80y You came to the wrong place Mr. I have no sense of humour.
knelsond You have no sense of humor, and I came to the wrong place?! This is a youtube channel showcasing the works of a standup comic. "YOU CAME TO THE WRONG PLACE YOU FUCKING MONGOLOID!"
Bill Hicks came to Edinburgh to talk about drugs, from his face he didn't get the laughs he expected. He didn't realise he was 5 years behind lol x
Introduced by Jack Dee as well christ
I love how he replaces 'Sharper Image' with 'Tandy'!
Your right. I was a bit naive and Mr Hicks helped me to open my mind to a lot of stuff I had never thought about. My friend who now works on other side of the world still sends me recommendations about comedy, music and films but Bill was his best call by far.
What does he says after the "internal dialogue"? I'm not getting it, could anyone write that down please? =)
Is that the start of "The Twilight Zone" at the end there? XD
And as an American I enjoy British and Australian comedians. It's just a general observation. His comedy had a lot of references to American pop culture at the time and he leaned on riling the crowd up as part of his act, which doesn't seem to be working with this audience as well as it does in the videos I've seen of his American tours.
I've been a fan of Bill Hicks for years, never knew he did UK gigs. And to be introduced by Britain's most miserable comic Jack Dee
Bill was massively popular in the UK and loved playing here, as people got him and he never had to argue with drunk right-wingers, who'd taken offence. His final special, Revelations, was filmed in London and had cancer not killed him, he was set to get a series on UK TV.
He did gigs in Germany too when he toured Europe
Miserable comic ?
His style is dead-pan which is , to many, rather funny.😊
I didnt realise that at the time but now when I see whats happening around us it is history. The man was like a prophet. Would be great if he was with us. I think he would loved the internet. The good, the bad and the ugly. I think guys like Bill could literally make the world a better place. I don't say that lightly. Thanks for your comment, you are clearly a man who appreciates the things that matter. That is the truth.
Yikes tough crowd.
His jokes are very American, and he's not in America
@@freddovich7925 thanks for pointing out the obvious.
@@vikinginspace4881 You seemed to be having trouble
@@freddovich7925 do better
@@vikinginspace4881 You might have noticed that initially.
Free Julian Assange
Just found this comment ❤❤❤ YAY!!! He just celebrated his 53rd bday a free man here at home in Australia!!!
Very obviously not Alex Jones IMO.
Lip job, ear lobe job, couple moves removed, facial fat was removed and voice larynx change. Some say it's his cousin or brother but people have referred to him as bill. He's referred to himself twice on seperate occassion. Teeth, eyes, and nose are dead on although teeth could have been shaved down. Something is up
@@nikolasporter6617 OK so say it is true. Why?
@@iamtheteapot7405 cause bill could fully commit to his emotions. A good example is his "come here " joke. The acting is quite natural and he himself seems to be quite spontaneous. He'd be a great host to lead the opposition.
That's not the most articulate argument but neither of us wanna spend writing essays on UA-cam
@@nikolasporter6617 agreed
unless they are playing an elaborate joke by having 'Edinburgh' in six foot high letters, of course
Hicks was a genius.
"Where is my commercial?"
people should search up the 'austin incident' (doug stanhope). alex jones has NO experience as a stand up
Year is this?
Bill Hicks was fucking ahead of his time. About pretty much everything. Except smoking, of course. Oops.
smoking never killed him and he quit
He didn't quit. He did for 9 months but went back to it and smoked till he died.
adhamh Pancreatic cancer is exceedingly rare for people under 40. tobacco smoking is the primary risk factor for pancreatic cancer (25% of the cases can be attributed to smoking).
David Harrison incorrect, he did quit, was diagnosed with cancer during that stint, and afterwards began smoking again cus he already had cancer. Did the smoking cause the cancer, probably, but anything could have actually triggered the cancer
Alex Jones always cracks me up
what a stale crowd lol.
lol at the clapping. that's them laughing more, it turns into a clap.
Jesus, Jack Dee looks like he's 12.
Just out of short trousers.
0:00 Holy shit. Jack Dee
Jack Dee looks so young. If only that thought could have sprung to mind about Bill Hicks too.
Jack Dee looks about 10 years old lmao
He looks just like Chris Rock.
wow, Jack Dee looks very young in this
Sydney Australia.large teams of police, armed to the teeth , dressed in jump suits with sniffer dogs trained to sniff out pot smokers who are arrested charged fined and or jailed for it. No joke.
I didn't mean to imply he liked heckling. With his loud sound effects and escalating jokes (like his Jay Leno bit that gets more and more aggressive as it progresses,) he seems to really like riling up the crowd not in opposition to him but in union with him. In the end, I'm not Bill Hicks, so I'm just stating observations. I know he preferred the British scene more than the American in the end, so I'm inclined to believe I'm misjudging what he appreciated in his crowds.
Its actually a 2 way thing, he does the talking but if the crowd don't respond theres no momentum. They were just a hopeless crowd. They were probably not used to his style and immutably opposed to illicit drugs.
I simply LOVE raising the roof-time
"The door is ajar" Lol, cracked up on that one!
Well, to be fair, during this same time period, his audiences in major venues were quite loud in America without any "prompting."
Still, good point, different ways of receiving and responding to comedy from two very separate cultures I suppose. That's probably why I mistook it for not understanding his comedy or not appreciating his style of delivery.
literally laughed out loud. thanks for posting. #@%$ funnyman. 😂
why is british tom brady introducing bill hicks?
The greatest comic ever 🎈
George Carlin is the greatest comic ever
Maria Bamford.. also genius funny
Alec Laskaris the second time round
@@aleclaskaris6271 Carlin was too political.
I'm Australian, and under 20, and I understood it fine.
Don't do drugs! Well I'm definitely not doing them with you! geez!
thx for the vid, ElFuk!
r.i.p. bill hicks
That 5 below zero joke noticeably fell a bit flat because he meant Fahrenheit, as an American, but his audience here thinks in Celsius. -5 C is your average winter day, not that remarkable. -20 is what he should have said to be more relevant.
Thanks buddy. Always a delight to catch a new one.
One of the greatest comedians ever. Not only a guy who makes you laugh and also makes you think lol
Whats the date???
"Raise the roof time" Jack? Eh?
Thanks for the upload! Brilliant performance!
there's a strong clue that this might be Edinburgh!!
Most of his comedy still stands up today. It's still relevant
The funny thing about all these debates about this clip is that this was the year that Bill 'broke' in the UK, where he felt accepted and that the audience got him (even if this truncated TV set doesn't really do his live set justice). It is important to bear in mind that back then, UK audiences didn't yelp & whoop like yahoos, just because they recognised a reference, and TV producers didn't prompt audiences into such behaviour to sell the fact that it's funny to the comatose viewing public.
Hicks was loved in the u.k. He didnt get the same love in the U.S
Raise the Rooftime.
Aw Billy boy, you are still missed.
I laughed for about a week after I first heard this!
All of the things you mentioned are vastly different between the US and Canada. Have you been to anywhere in Canada besides where you've grown up? Have you been to anywhere in the US? The two collective cultures are very, very distinct.
