$20 Schwinn restoration - 1x9 road bike

- In this video I show the process of how I restored this old junk 1987 Schwinn Le Tour road bike I bought for $20 into a great looking 1x road bike. This was my most nice looking restoration I've done so far! And by the way the final weight was 9.8kg (21.6 lbs). Wheels and fork were from a 1999 Pinarello I used to have.
*** I will add updates and details to the blog post here:

What was the final weight?
Man, that bike is mint! I love how bikes are simply timeless!
thank you brv002!
A realy nice job man! Keep the good work. Glad to se more and more people bring life to old bikes!
thanks a lot D!
I liked the piano music towards the end. Goes well with this video of you rebuilding your road bike. Back in the 80s we called these bikes ten speeds. No one referred to them as road bikes.
thanks a lot MK.
Just bought a Schwinn Continental "10 speed" last year. 1975.
Beautiful outcome.
Thanks for showing us Bruce that's brilliant! Des P👍
thanks Des!
Awesome job..you make it look easy but it's truly a skill set one must have to do what you do.
thanks a lot Timothy!
Very inspiring. I have also a 1960s grandfather roadbike... but just starting to restoring... :)
very cool. I've never yet worked on 60s bikes.
Beautifully done!
thank you very much Omar.
Now, that's a nice build 👌
Thanks! 👍
Excellent job , Thankyou for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks very nice. Excellent job as always.
Thank you! Cheers!
Very good job. Specially the 1×9 setup. Good luck!!!!
Thanks!
Hi, I build also a vintage road bike this year. It is columbus frame, the colour is lemon yellow and I build it very traditional. Today I closed the project with wrapping the handlebar. It needs also some month. I like this kind of bikes very much.
Thanks for this video!!
sounds cool Jens! thank you for watching!
Amazing job congrats.
You were lucky to find that frame. Everything else goes from there and some hard work. Good build.
Thank you!
I had one of those in 1987. My first new bike (before that they were hand me downs from my brothers...). I was an English kid living in the States, then eventually moved back home to the UK and my bike was somewhat exotic in the neighbourhood!
The chi[na ]i[s ]b[eing gay rn] style of bikes were popular then/now and many are still nice to look at.
Keep em only gay in appearance as they are now?
Another Schwinn put back in service! How does this one ride compared to your other one?
The exage levers are SUPER good, they have a quick release button on the side that lets you pop open the brakes for easy tire removal without having to let the air out. If you use brakes with a QR as well, you can (sometimes, depending on the brake limit) combine them to get some impressive rim brake clearance on a drop bar bike.
Also nice mill, can't wait to see what kinds of unique parts you start making with it!
Some pro painting tips I collected from professionals:
- Disposible foam earplugs can be stuffed into screw holes to protect the threads while allowing you to still paint right up to the edge.
- Taping off the BB shell surface (using a sharp xacto knife or razor blade to get it clean and round) saves the hassle of scraping it later. If the shell was never faced you should get a bike shop to do it. Ensures there's no gaps around the BB.
- The dropout faces also should be protected with tape so you get the right 'bite' when tightening the axle in. These can just be scraped after.
- You can find reproduction decals online. They go on before you clearcoat.
- The empty holes in the fork and chainstays are exhaust holes for hot gasses when the frame was brazed or welded together. You can plug these with something paintable before painting. If you don't, I figured out that using some hard beeswax works on a painted frame - knead it to soften it and then smear it in. It'll harden up when cold. You can color the beeswax to match your frame using paste food coloring but that takes some experimentation.
And something I personally learned - downtube shifters can be easy to set up, but they can also be a nightmare. All are not equal and looking up the manual can solve some strange 'this doesn't feel quite right' issues due to a specific order of setting up so the the tension is correct. This is more important if you use them indexed or with a 2x up front.
wow thanks Aubreykun for all the great tips and info!
Hello Bruce, just came along your channel and had a satisfying time watching the rebuild. Thanks for taking the time and keep on going! Greetings from Germany and you got a new subscriber 👍😘🌞🍀
Danke Miak! Ich habe neun Jahre in der Schweiz gelebt und Deutschland oft besucht.
@@BruceChastain das habe ich gesehen. Ich werde also in Deutsch schreiben, dann bleibst Du etwas in der Übung 👍😘
that bike is perfect. 1x with friction shifter - light... nice
thank you!
I got the same bike I found next to a dumpster. It's rideable, but paint looks exactly how yours looked when you first got it.
Ohhh man great video! I was definitely considering a vintage cannondale restoration and watching the video like yep, yep! I can do this! Then you busted out the 3D printing and I said nope, nope can’t do this!! I think I’ll save up and buy one already at my specs.
I hear ya man, sometimes it's just best to pay someone and then spend more time doing what you really want to do. This is a lesson I know but don't practice enough. On the other hand, as far as the 3d printing and milling machine, I used it but it isn't really necessary, I know people have been doing this sort of thing with more basic tools for many years. Thanks for watching.
First time watching you dude, I was going to say it was a great video, but you left us in the dark about so many different things. you didn't tell us where you source the forks from, the making of the parts, the gear cassette, the sprocket and crank set you left out so much man. It was a good build, but I just think you missed a chance of making this an incredible video.

"What seems like a really cheap project ended up being quite a bite more as you more as you start adding those parts along"
Man, we've never been more wrong our entire lives. I decided to restore my dad's Japanese bike (Mamachari) to a vintage cruiser-esque bike a month ago that he bought from a surplus store for only $30. It has been sitting in our garage for two years collecting dust and rust. I thought that it would be such a cheap restoration given that I mostly have the tools already. I ended up spending A LOT than I initially thought I would.
But in the end, the expenses did not matter to me. It was the journey and the craft that makes that project super worth it.
Check the price of new bikes. The added value of a new bike may not be worth it.
that's a good perspective
Wow!! That came out beautiful. Great job sir.. I have a vintage Trek I want to restore soon.
thank you!
@@BruceChastain you’re welcome
Ace!, great result, love the colours. I think I've never seen a 1 by, 9 speed downtube shifter bike before 🙂Saving bikes rules, great job!
hey thanks so much Codefoto! I did another 1x9 DT shifter build on my channel. if you want I can link you to it.
@@BruceChastain Thanks!, cool I'll find it 👍🏼
@@BruceChastain Is the shifter STI 9 speed or a 7 speed that also works on 9 speed?
Beautiful well done
Thank you Matthew

I got an 84 sprint i found behind a dumpster, gets lotsa love
nice, I do love these old Schwinns, in fact this one is undergoing a rebuild again right now, video should be up soon.
That’s a killer build. I did a similar build on a mid 80s Bianchi frame. Turned out very fine. Those old steel frames are legit when you build them up good. That Schwinn is good for decades to come. Thanks for giving life to an old bike!
thanks!
Really nice 👌
Thanks a lot 😊
Good job👍
Thanks :)
classy and edgy at the same time, a true sport bike
thanks!
Very nice!
thank you VBK!
super video
thank you again Паша!
nice job!
thanks Tony.
Brilliant music choice!
thanks!
Hello I see some decent chinese parts from ebay/ali; IXF, Deckas, bar tape, cables and housings, bolany cassette. I hope they work fine and you are happy with your bike. Finally it came fine and it has interesting gear combination 👍
thanks zdravo! Yeah so far these parts have been pretty good to me. I don't pretend they're just as good as other parts, but for what I do, so far they've been good.
@@BruceChastain well I discovered brand Risk, they have great screws, some tools and acessories
Nice custom brake holders.
古いバイクでもきちんと整備すればこんなにも美しくなるなんてすごい。

Great rebuild. This is more gravel bike than road bike I think.
little bit of both isn't it, gravel bike gearing but road bike fit.
took me 4 years to complete my '74 Huffy Cruiser. some projects just take time.
nothing wrong with taking time on it
Another bike restored by you that was beautiful. This color is really cool. Congratulations on your work, you are very capricious and the end result is always excellent. Chapeau...!
thanks as Always Eloi, but to be honest this was one from last year, I just had to repost the video due to some problems. but thank you none the less :)
@@BruceChastain I noticed it was from last year. But, my compliments are true and go for this video as well. A big hug.
beauty!
thank you!
I'm building a 20 inch old school 1973 5 speed bike 🚲.. with the old handler bars and long seat with the rest back bar
dang sounds interesting
I got lent an 87 Rayleigh road bike completely converted me to frame set friction shifters.
I actually like them a lot. not for racing, but for normal riding they're good.

Thanks Angel
Awesome
thanks John!
Amazing video, about to start a project on a Schwinn Varsity 10 Speed and a Schwinn Le Tour. I was wondering how you learned how to work on vintage bikes.
thanks Peter! my dad taught me a few things when I was a boy, then the rest I learned either just from trial and error or watching youtube videos
🔥🔥🔥
sweet
thanks 52D
This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
The fork you used, is that a 1-1/8 steer tube?
Beautiful job. Did you have any rear hub conversion to the MTB drives? I mean it is a road hub no?
thanks a lot John! No I didn't have any issues, being they are road wheels, it's just running the regular road hubs.
Super build. that frame looks a lot like my old Raleigh Chiltern. I made mine Flat Black, but that "Bianchi" light blue looks very appealing... ahhh... dammit, I think you're going to make me tear it apart again! Cool result. PS. Did you spray clear coat on it or not?
thanks a lot Chris. no I did not, but if I were to do it again I would. I'd use a 2k clear coat.
Nice job! I was wondering about hubs and wheels? What you used. I have schwinn super sport looking todo this but use Mt bike bars.
These were just some old mavic wheels of a 1999 Pinarello I used to have.
Cool bike and great video. Why is the front sprocket so small?
thanks Nattin, I was planning on doing some mountains in Georgia, and I'm not that strong of a rider so I wanted that really low gear. But since then I've loaded it with a larger one.
Steel frames live again!😊
Very nice! I’m planning to start on a project like this pretty soon, hoping to find something I can use as a touring rig to complement my fixie. Gonna be fun!
EDIT: Oh, and where did you get the “EAT PLANTS” cycling cap?
very cool! As for the cap, it's not mine that, that video was from the @lifeafterlon channel, not sure if he sold them at one time or what.
What was the original diameter of the fork?
The jokey wheels might have used some cleaning and repacking?
Hi , what kind of spray paint did you use ? I see it is Krylon but there are a lot. Thanks
check in the description, I have a link to a blog post I think there I have mentioned the paint. I'm thinking maybe it was called seafoam.
awesome what kind of bars & stem is that, amazon find??
thank you. No, I really don't remember, I think I just got them from another bike I had long ago.
Yes , if you wouldn have lightly sanded the primer your paint would be smoother . lightly, using a scuff pad works good on primer.
Thanks for the tip!
Hello! One question, how a wheel that supports a cassete with 9speed fits in this frame? Normally this old frames support wheels with hubs for 5/6 speeds only.
Nice work!
Thanks a lot Joao! To tell you the truth I don't recall what this bike had on it to start with, maybe it was a 7 speed because it's from the later 80s. I think I only had to widen the triangle a tiny bit, which is no issue on a steel frame. I did have to widen another road frame a lot more than this one once.
@@BruceChastain Thanks for the help! Great video :)
The music is beautiful. What’s its title and artist, please? Nice vid!
thanks a lot Bill! Here is the song I think you mean: ua-cam.com/video/X7T6_IuhdAc/v-deo.html
I have a question. Can I use brake housing instead of shifter housing for the shifter cable?
brake housing is bigger, so I guess it might work in a pinch, but I'd try to get the right stuff.
Beautiful bike is their a way you can sent me the list of your custom parts that you put into the bike
thank you Mikel! Please see the description for some of the details.
Awesome job wish you could work on my bike.
thanks a lot SF!
You could totally upgrade to 11-12 speed with a cassette hub and cassette upgrade for a reasonable price too! Friction shifters are so great huh
yeah I would go with maybe an 11 speed, but all my stuff is 9 speed so that does keep it easy.
I have the same bike in red. What size bottom bracket did you use. I'm having trouble finding a sealed replacement. I know it is 68mm english but how wide?????
honestly I don't remember, I had a few laying around so I think I just tried a couple until something looked right.
Great job ❤ saludos desde México
Shimano shifter..Is it being used as STI indexed? I have one that looks the same with 7 speeds..Will it work with 9 speeds???
I believe this one has in index mode or friction mode, being it's on a 9 speed cassette it has to be used in friction mode.
❤ 🚴
thanks JC!
Did you have to cold set the frame to fit a 9 speed cassette?
it's been awhile but I believe I did.
Can the rust on the inside of the frame be removed? Is there a way to deal with it or is it not a concern?
I'm not an expert here, but I did try to help this issue on another bike:
ua-cam.com/video/XqYi0WTLCOY/v-deo.html
Also can you list what wheels you used. Thanks!
sorry I'm not sure, they're some mid 2000s mavics I believe.
maybe this will help with the bearings: hackandridebikes.blogspot.com/2020/10/updates-on-20-schwinn-restoration-1x9.html
Was the original fork threaded? Was it 1" threaded? It will help me a lot to know
Hi Alex, I will just reply to this comment. Here I think I've answered the questions: hackandridebikes.blogspot.com/2020/10/updates-on-20-schwinn-restoration-1x9.html
@Bruce Chastain thanks man, I did see that, I now actually read the boxed description.
Man, I'm glad to know I can fit a 1-1/8 straight fork. It will open the options.
@@MTBAlex no problem. I did just add some info in there when I saw your question.
Did you fit that cassette to the original wheels??
no, these where were from a year 2000 bike I had.
What's the Chainring size?
Does the shifting works well?
I don't remember what size chaining I used, I think it was a 34t. But you could use anything really. Yes the shifting was good, it was just down tube friction shifting so very reliable.
Sweet! Total cost ultimately?
thanks! honestly I'm not sure, it's been awhile, but I'd bet if you didn't have any parts before hand, you could do it for like $350.
@@BruceChastain I just looked. Cheapest new road bike on Nashbar site was $1700.
Made a Schwinn look like a Bianchi…! Looks very nice…!
Is the frame brazed…? Very plain looking lugs, if that’s what they are….
yeah factory brazed
With only one small ring in the front it’s going to be a rather slow bike?
top speed probably about 35kph on flat road, so yes.
Does it have a Kick Stand?
I didn't put on a kick stand in order to save some weight.
what year and model schwinn was it to start with?
1988 LeTour if I remember correctly.
What paint color did u use? Thx
Krylon COLORmaxx Gloss Blue Ocean Breeze
is the frame steel?
Sure is!
what size is the frame on that bike? and tires?? if you dont mind??
I believe it's a size 53 frame, and 700x25 tires
How much did you paid in total for all the parts?
I can't really say because they had been collected over time. But I remember I did make an estimate and I think it was somewhere just under $400.
The expenses add up, but if you are happy with the end result I call it worth it.
yeah for sure, thanks for stopping by Andrew.
I was waiting for the final weight.
I believe it was 10kg
What was the final weight?
I believe 10kg
Most of my tools are english I was a metrologist when I was working and all the gages were english until the last few years before I retired, even then most of my inspection work was done in mm. The electronic gages automatically convert. I will leave metric to you young guys.
I suppose we'll all be living with both units for a long time now. Thanks for stopping in Tom.
Hey man, how many teeth does your chainring have?
hey Dutta, I think this one was a little 34t, but I also have a 36 and 38, on some of these 1X bike I just change it out depending on if I'm planning on climbing a lot or not.
I need alot of info.. im going to be building something very similar very soon.. first timer.. and I dont know what the hell im doing.. kinda.

it's a basic frame, nothing fancy, then a combination of mid range parts and cheap imported parts.
