    I'm so happy to find someone else who uses Build Your Library! We started using it this year and I really like it. This year was Level 1, next year we will be doing Level 2. I didn't use it all either. I only used the history, the read alouds, and some of the art this year. Next year, I may incorporate the Science portion. We are not nature people, so that is why I didn't follow the science this year. Although, as we got further in the weeks, I noticed the science section started concentrating on more of the animals or insects of nature, so I started to rethink the science section of the level. I like that you can tweak it to what you like to learn about and what you don't.

      Yes, exactly, It’s very easy to rework levels however you need to. Thanks for watching! 🤗

    I love BYLs booklist! Although my teenager was never homeschooled, I’m testing the waters with him using a lit bite and we are going through it together and we are having a great time. Also I’m going through Emily’s history book by book website and reading books to give myself a better history lesson than I was taught and so far wow! Love it ❤

      Oh yes, her new website is such an incredible resource! And I love that you’re still “home” schooling with your older kid 💕

    We are totally friends! LOL. Thanks for sharing about BYL Level 8. I was still undecided about what we were going to do for science this year, and I was kind of already thinking it would be fun to tie it in to our history. I'm thinking BYL Level 8 will be very helpful with what I am wanting.

      I have thought about just doing it myself since I found it lol. It looks so fun!

      @Regular Secular Mama I went down a deep rabbit hole last night and am considering combining BYL Level 8, Big History Project, Curiosity Chronicles, and Science Chunks (Elemental Science) for history and science combined over the next 2 years. I think it could be amazing to make all those connections between Science advancements and how it effects history. But it may be too ambitious 🤣

      THAT sounds like a lot. A lot of fun 😜 If you think you’re kids would be interested, I say go for it! Even just BYL8 and Big History Project would be a great combo.

    I keep looking at BYL! I'm using her Harry Potter studies and appreciate those. We'll see what the future holds! We are continuing on with History Quest next year.

      History Quest is pretty solid! I have always wanted to do the Harry Potter units too. It sounds so fun 🤩

    Sounds like an awesome year planned. We also love literature based curriculum and use a Bookshark in our family. We will also be diving into year 2 of American history next year. 😊

    Did you ever do BYL L4? If you did, where did you place it in the order? I’m also curious, do you do the copywork, narration and dictation portions of BYL? If you do, do you have a video of how you do them or would you please make one?
    I am most excited to start using Nomad Press books for science next year!

      I had planned to do BYL4 along with BYL6, but seeing how it went last year I decided just to stick to BYL6. There are definitely world history topics that will pop up, and I know they’ll cover it all in depth in high school so I’m not too worried about it.

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому +1

      As for copywork/narration/dictation: I did it all basically as written for a while but then veered off to try some other language arts things. I still have them narrate as I read aloud our literature and sometimes history. We occasionally use copywork and dictation if we don’t have some other writing to work on or are taking a break from it.
      It’s on my video idea list, but I will definitely bump it up 😉

    I like the idea of literature-based curricula, but I have a hard time letting go of teaching standard concepts that may be overlooked, and that they may need later if they take dual enrollment courses or high school courses through FLVS (our state's virtual school). Does BYL teach literary concepts with standard terminology and things like literary outlines and literary analysis? For the history, my kids love history, and we really enjoyed Blossom and Root's Early American history this year, but I'm worried about the rest of social studies slipping through the cracks, like Economics, Politics, Civics, etc. Do you fill in the gaps with any supplements, or do you just trust the process and find they learn these concepts and proper terminology along the way?

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому +1

      For the most part, I *try* to trust the process. As mentioned, BYL is heavily influenced by Charlotte Mason which is all about short and gentle lessons, learning grammar in context through copywork, etc. BYL does cover literary analysis in depth starting in level 9, so there’s that. I think it helps to have a good grasp of that yourself, though, because it will come up naturally in book discussions.
      I don’t have a strong LA background. I wrote just well enough in school to make it look good lol. So I do supplement writing a bit and am relearning literary analysis and similar concepts on my own. She does include some helps like worksheets to organize research, but as for modeling outlining essays and things, you are mostly on your own. That’s not something that is explicitly taught in the levels I’ve seen so far.

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому +1

      As for other social studies topics, they do pop up here and there and I believe they play in more heavily in the middle-high school levels, which makes sense. I am not planning to go to great lengths to supplement for that unless it works out nicely-like fitting in History Quest United State’s chapters on the branches of government and civics. But really, I figure they’ll get plenty of exposure to that just in the real world and later in high school.
      I hope that helps! Great questions!

    Thanks for sharing! We’re big fans of BYL and have used levels 1, 2 and prehistory so far. I was thinking of jumping to 5 next year (my daughter will be in the 4th grade) because I really want to cover US history, but some of the books seem a bit advanced. I’m still debating doing BYL 3 for fourth grade and BYL 5 for fifth grade. I’m curious if you could go back and do it again would you do just BYL 3 this year and then jump to BYL5 or just skip BYL 3 and 4 and jump to BYL5. Thanks!

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому +1

      Honestly? I wish I had found BYL sooner and done all the levels in order from the beginning 😂 Doing BYL3 and then BYL5 would be a good plan, though, I’d you don’t want to squeeze level 4 in between. It might give some context to things that are happening during that time here in North America.
      There are people who have enjoyed doing BYL 3 and 5 together! It just didn’t work well for my family; we all get side-tracked VERY easily.

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому +1

      Oh and I agree, some of the spines used for American History are advanced. They are the “young reader’s edition,” but they seem to be written at an upper middle-high school reading level. It works well when read aloud and discussed together, but it sometimes goes a bit over my 9-year-old’s head. Good thing he’ll get plenty of exposure later.

      @@RegularSecularMama Thanks so much! We really love BYL and I'm glad we were able to do a couple of levels already. I'll go back and watch your combining level 3 and 5 video again and see if we could try it. Or maybe I'll just save it until 5th grade and do it as is. Decisions decisions!

      I will admit the reason I am dragging my feet about BYL3 is I don't want to use SOTW. I am thinking of just subbing curiosity chronicles early modern for the history.

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Рік тому

      Yeah, I’m not a fan of SOTW either. I don’t have experience with Curiosity Chronicles, but I’ve heard of people doing that 👍🏻
