The following footage was shot in Otsuchi Japan which was completely destroyed by the 9.0 earthquake and Tsunami that stuck just ten minutes after the earthquake.
The footage starts out at the Otsuchi harbor as everything was shaking and the ground was buckling. It continues as they evacuate the town and head for higher ground before the Tsunami comes ashore.
About ten minutes from the end of the earthquake, the Tsunami hits the town and destroys everything in the town. Footage shows the massive wave and rapid water rise along with tons of debris in the water.
Footage then shows the whole area is destroyed. Video ends with a clip of a fire truck and someone the loud speaker calling for help and the Videographer talking about what happened while in the dark.

Anyone who was filming had no idea what was actually going to happen. If they did make it out it was nothing less of a miracle that they did. The beging when everyone was saying here it comes and was just casually filming I couldn't imagine what they were thinking once it actually did arrive! That must have been closet to hell on Earth as u could get up to this point anyway, makes me worry about the future and what it holds sometimes. I watch these videos sometimes to remember just how good we do have it and if I want to bitch and complain about something I remember it can always be worse and to just suck it up and handle what needs to be done and that's all we can do until it's our turn to leave this world and helpfully we leave it with a clear conscience and to have helped and loved as many other people and critters!! Can't forget the critters, as much as possible cuz u never know when it's our time. Anyone that is being negative about this video and other ones like it just don't understand how small and fragile we really are and hopefully never experience anything such as this in their lifetime. 911 was tragic and was devastating to us but to put into perspective if the entire city of New York was wiped off of the face of the Earth that is basically what happened to these people by mother nature nonetheless! Many do forget or think that just because they are not in America that everyone in these videos or that were there are all 100% human and people just like you and I and to speak I'll of them cuz they may look different then we do is the real tragedy. I appreciated hearing English version. I lived in Okinawa as a kid so I have nothing against Japanese people. The one thing I have noticed in comments attacking people on ideology is that they are pretty young. You can tell by the verbiage they spew.

Hello it's me I’ve always hated the “someone has it worse than you” mentality. A lot of people have problems. Just because to you one may have it worse than another doesn’t make it less impactful to the person experiencing it.

if everyone did that or at least more then who did than there would have been far less casualties, I am a bit mystified at how many people just depended on the levies and didnt evacuate. many videos show people playing calm and cool by the shore line . rip for the dead If they only knew
@@weasele1 to be fair, these towns were built to withstand huge waves. They probably were more used to it than anyone else, that's why they even have warning systems in place compared to other coastal countries. It's just that the scale was so huge, even the evac centers were swept away.
13:03 - The large catamaran deposited on top of the small concrete building was a famous image from this disaster. I saw a video of a crane that was brought in to lift it off afterwards.
Ships on land and houses in the sea! Nature is wild.
That's the worlds strongest house a tsunami couldn't sweep it away and a giant boat couldn't crush it.
all these people are really upset bc the video wasnt recorded for their pleasure and isnt perfect while the person who made this was focused on surviving a natural disaster. if yall were faced with an incoming tsunami and your top priority was making sure a video was perfect you wouldnt make it

I was expecting to see everybody running/driving in the same direction. They all seemed so calm & casual.
12 years later and I still feel bad for the people who live in Japan that were effected by it. They never deserved it. It was so beautiful though seeing the Japanese people help each other out and were very nice to each other. Most countries there would have been crime or looting or riots, none of that in Japan. I guess in some situations disasters can bring the best out of people. ❤ 🇯🇵
The water level ascending at 8:00 would have been priceless, for a wide expanse of water, the level going up several meters in a few seconds was what you should have framed and focused on. Thank goodness you survived.

It's never explained here, but the Americans who shot this video were in this small Japanese city as anti-whaling monitors.
Of the hundreds if not thousands of hours of video of the tsunami taken that day. The clip at 8:00 of the wave racing up that tree was the scariest clip taken.

absolutely chilling...witnessing a 9.0, escaping a doomed town against the clock in an electric car, sirens wailing and tsunami impending, getting to safe ground and seeing localized Armageddon, commandeering an abandoned firetruck to try and rescue someone in the water and the truck left ticking over - lights flashing and the woman pleading for help in a language no one there can understand.... Hollywood not required :/

notice how after the water rushes into the city, it starts to rush out to the ocean again. that’s the ripple effect. kinds like when a wave hits the edge of a pool then the wave bounces back towards the center of the pool

Naw, they came back from rescuing people and said WTF! SOMEBODY STOLE OUR TRUCK!
Sad thing is .. the hospitals probably under water or floated away .. gas stations under water or floated away so fire truck can’t refill .. this was a major major disaster of incomparable proportion. Every person affected had to literally start all over with the clothes on their back. Most their homes AND cars gone .. phone and power lines down, no idea how to check on family .. thousands were never even found. I can’t imagine this.

A week later boxes and boxes of previsions were delivered. They were able to eat finally. Because of the nuclear plants issues ( one of the world ever) thousands of people lost there homes that were living in tsunami free zones 20 miles away from the plant. It was devastating.😢😢🙏🙏❤️❤️🇺🇲🇺🇲

週末、震災後の大槌へ行ってきた
想像以上の被害で親戚の家も含め、町自体が完全に波に飲まれ
また、半分の地域は津波後の火災で全焼状態
生き残ってる方が奇跡だと感じるくらい酷い状態でした

I wondered what would happen to the small island that's visible starting at 3:44. Would everything on it be washed away, leaving it just bare rock? At 12:37, there it is again, with the water level around it dramatically lower - and to my surprise, the trees are intact. But I'm sure the pine tree with the large bird nest on the top at 7:53 did not survive, although the camera moves away from it before it undoubtedly was broken off by the rushing water.
@ 8:00 is just insane as others have said .. the fact it's not a stream or some neighborhood retention pond rising THAT quickly but a giant,,, vast area is just .... NO WORDS 👍✌️☮️
I grew up in a town on the Pacific Ocean in California with an elevation of 10 feet and when this happened it was a huge wake up call. It destroyed the boat docks in our harbor and we were thousands of miles away. Mind blowing and terrifying.
My heart goes out to these people, they seem like such nice mannerly people that have to endure so much.

So when the areas were flooded after you skipped over parts, was that just smaller sections of ocean water being pushed up by the actual large wave? I couldn't believe that land bar how much larger it got after the actual wave came in!!! Unbelievable footage.

terrifying. living on the Oregon coast as I do I am always aware of what may happen. I feel so bad for the people who have lost everything, including so many lives.
My brother lives on the Oregon coast, less than a mile from the beach. I always worry about him. last time I stayed, think it was on wednesday evenings they tested the tsunami sirens, it 'mooooo'd' like a cow so you wouldn't mistake it for a normal siren, it was really eerie.

That's just creepy on so many levels. You can see around the rock protrusions the water rushing out to meet the front of the tsunami, and you can see the front edge of the tsunami itself. What's even scarier is anyone who knows about wave and land formation interaction will be feeling a rising sense of dread seeing the narrow sound into the harbor. That pinching down is going to exponentially amplify that tsunami. All put together this screams that that whole town is about to be literally washed away.
Watching this eleven years later almost exactly (3/12/22) & it still shocks & saddens me to see how quickly everything can go from okay to disaster.
Amazing to me that the American narrator automatically presumes the scene with fleeing Japanese civilians would immediately deteriorate into a B-grade zombie movie with them “swamping the car”... like why would these people behave like that? It shows a lot about the mindset of the person saying it. In an emergency, he might be a person to stop someone and insist they save him. Very interesting. This was great footage. As Americans who have internalized exceptionalism, I find it truly fascinating when confronted with a society with collective values as primary. Everyone knows that we are in a hurry, but everyone also knows that obeying traffic laws is the way to make the situation the best possible - that would not happen in the US, and many lives would be lost in the stampeding chaos rather than merely the natural disaster. My two cents on hearing him say the quiet part out loud.
What happened with the rescue at the end? Were they able to get the boat's attention and rescue the woman?
We humans see one of the worst days of our lives, the birds see one of the best days they've had in a long time.

Its rare to see footage of the water being pulled back out to sea, so this is very interesting (11:29). Of course, then you think of the many, many bodies being pulled out to sea, what a terrible thing for the families who survived this.

I cant imagine the gravity of just being there and seeing all this devastation what it must have done to all the witnesses & survivors is beyond comprehension & my heart goes out to them all, even still these years later, it is a tragic event in time & still has an enormous effect. That little island is the site of a shinto shrine. It's connected to the mainland by a seawall, but in this video the seawall was completely underwater.
Mr Barnes, this is incredibly horrifying! How you managed to keep your cool I'll never know! The devastation is beyond most peoples comprehension. I cant imagine what it must be like to have witnessed this first hand. Im so thankful you all survived this! What a record of events you have shared with us! Americans like myself are clueless when it comes to this kind of disaster. The Americans in this video were clueless as well. Laughing at first.. crying to this day about what they witnessed and so happy they went up high in time.

Luck had nothing to do with it. They were warned, they followed the warning advice and got to safety.
they got a 20 minutes head start compared to anyone on the city. The guy on the radio at the beginning saved their lives

It seems that the tsunami wave is churning up scores of surface-feeding baitfish, which is causing a feeding frenzy among the gulls.
Yeah, it’s surreal how the birds are oblivious to the tsunami. I wouldn’t expect a bird to be terrified, but they behaved like it’s just an ordinary day, except for some unusually easy pickings.
All those fish are kept inside huge keep nets and the Japanese feed them on CANCER giving food pellets and all the fish were washed inland because the tsunami was to strong for them to escape back into the open ocean' the Japanese make huge profits from feeding the fish on cancer giving food pellets and most of the fish were killed so their profits went bye bye's ha haThese guys kill life to make huge profits and the food is highly toxic for humans.

This is so insane. It must have been very surreal to watch land and buildings and people and animals be consumed in seconds. People in ships had no time to escape. I’m horrified watching that ship tossed around like a leaf on the ocean. These people are so chill. I would by crying, hyperventilating. Traumatized knowing people were dying. It is very impressive video though. The outrush vs the incoming Tsunami.

In Google Earth, I think you can see the firetruck at 39°20'52.05"N 141°54'50.59"E,
on the 3/31/2011 image. I also noticed that in some nearby ravines the water ran up to 80 feet, unless the elevations are wrong.

This video is better than most as it lingers for you on different views instead of shaking and constantly moving from scene to scene. Most amateurs think that the viewer sees things as they do, moving their camera right along while 'scanning' an area or view, but we don't. Just when something gets interesting they change the shot or view. It's always so frustrating. I often wonder, don't they watch any videos themselves and see others making this same mistake & want to correct flaw?
I hada friend whose daughter was killed in this tsunami. She lives here in the US, and the loss was devastating to her.
Tornadoes and Tsunamis are the scariest natural disasters in my opinion because the warning times are extremely short. Earthquakes also but that goes without saying due to the fact they are connected with Tsunamis

at 11:03 is that a second wave coming in after the first wave is receding?
It's a mix of the wave still coming in and the other part of it is receding in the ocean already so it creates the mess you see at 11:02 (11:20 also)
