VeryMadeleine: Self-Portrait Series - July

Another month gone in a flash. It took me a while to come up with this one, I wanted to do something maybe more joyous or focused on discovering joy, as that’s kind of something I’ve been figuring out in life as of late. It was my birthday this month as well, so it felt fitting to go back to a more childish, playful and joyful mindset for this. I think the portraits themselves show this, coloured in like a kid would do. The video portion instead, expresses this longing as an adult to have freedom of self expression, but being told that being understated and minimal is best, and to conform and tone down our true selves. When I put together this outfit and look I was trying to tap into how a kid would play dress up and be as free as possible and not worry about it being too much. In the end I felt kind of inspired and realized even my “too much” was restrained in a way. I’d like to keep playing with this idea and working on that inner child to adulthood dialogue, trying to bridge the two.
