Great informative upload. Can you tell me if the Panasonic 1.4 converter is compatible with the Olympus pro range lenses?? I have one with my 200 f2.8 and I'm about to purchase the Olympus 40-150 f2.8 pro lens I'm hoping to be able to use the Panasonic converter with the Olympus lens mentioned. Many thanks for sharing this most useful upload. Phil
To bad the teleconverter wont wit the 100-300 and the 100-400. I ones tried the the oly teleconverter to see it it fitetd on a camera shot. But no the 100-300 glas is almost at the lend mount. and the teleconverters go in a tiny bit into the lens mount.
But see my note to Jim Lodge above - there's a useful way to add x1.4 or x2, using a Lumix camera with any Panny lens, including the 100-300 and 100-400mm, without resorting to the terrible digital zoom. @@keepsmiling6694 LOL would have been an amazing solution if the sensor's pixels could suddenly become 4x more potent in light-gathering ability in the "un-masked" area in ETC mode ;) The physics doesn't quiet work with this solution as it simply turns your micro-43 sensor into a sensor that's just a tad bigger than 1/1.7". The total light hitting your frame just shrank by 1/4 (for 2x ETC mode). With this solution you can essentially turn your sensor into smartphone size 1/3.0" and it will probably produce worse final image than f/1.7 1/3.0 sensor on a phone because phone sensors + AI enhancements are more advanced now days. It's the same thing as full-frame f/4 aperture is about equivalent to micro-43 f/2 since the total light of the frame is exactly 1/4 of full frame (micro-43 sensor size).
Thx David, always love your reviews. Question: So now that you've had the chance to use all the Pan. & Oly. tele-lenses, if you could only buy one Lens that uses the tele-converters in either Brand, which one and why? ... And would it be the same tele-lens if you didn't want a tele-converter?? 🍻
I have an issue with using TC-14 with 50-200. Af disables and my G9 shows "f0.0". Is this an arror with electrical connectors? Has anyone experienced this?
It should just work seamlessly, obviously. There's no settings for the converter so it does sound like a fault so that it isn't communicating with the camera. Anyone?
@@DavidThorpeMFT I have noticed that the mount connection is not 100% stable, and if by holding it the lens twists just a bit, it loses the connection to the camera. Maybe it's a weight balance issue. Just have to be careful I guess.
Hi David, another great video review, thank you! I actually did not realize that the 1.4x TC would fit the 50-200mm lens, I suppose because I use the built-in tele conversion feature on my GH5 and haven't needed anything else. I am wondering why that feature, which is on the latest Lumix cameras, is not mentioned more in the general photography community. I love it and there's no evident reduction in image quality, at least to my eye. That might be a good subject for a future review if you ever have time. Thanks again for all your hard work! I always listen to your reviews immediately. 👍😎😍
@Joe Marano In 4k photo, 30 fps, GH5, I get 8 mp grabs, but people want higher mp these days, so you're right. Took a series of Scissor-tail Flycatchers yesterday that look great online but I've never tried printing them out. Guess I should try that. 🤗
@Joe Marano Yes, if I had a newer computer that would play back 6k photo mode clips I could get 6k frame grabs at 18 mp's. Of course I could shoot 6k photo mode and choose the frames "in-camera," even now, but I can't really see the ones I want very well from the LCD screen so I resort back to 4k, which I can play the clips via the VLC program. I really should get myself a newer computer with updated graphics card, etc., lol.
Hi Linda. I use the Ex Tele. Conv. in FHD video sometimes. No quality loss at all in video. It simply crops the sensor. The digital zoom crops the sensor and then upsamples it to full size. Obviously, upsampling by 2x halves the definition of a lens but if that lens has definition beyond what you can see on the display medium, a 2048px tablet, say, then it won't be apparent. The only thing I'd say is that you have a lot more control if you do the cropping yourself in PP - but it's a lot more bother. Really, if you can't see it it doesn't matter. Of course, with my artistically heightened sensibilities any losses offend my.....oh, shut up Thorpe :-)
@@DavidThorpeMFT So glad to hear you say "No quality loss at all in video," David, referring to the Ex Tele Conversion feature that's built in to the newer Lumix cameras. Thank you for that! The feature is SO darn handy, especially for lenses that are just a tad too short. I just hit the Fn button that's set up to activate the feature, and ... poof (!) I've got the reach I need. 😊 I know I've gone off topic here, from your video, so thanks for allowing my thoughts. And many thanks for your helpful video reviews! You always enlighten and entertain us at the same time and we appreciate you! 😁
I just ordered a 2.2 x and a 0.43 x for my cameras standard lenses. Not micro 4/3 but still topic related. If this really works well than I'll save big $ on an expensive long range zoom and wide angles. So then are these really as good as the dedicated lenses themselves or just a second best option?
It doesn't, but here's a link to a useful way of increasing any Panny lens by x1.4 or x2. Give it a try - you may be pleasantly surprised: www.jasondimichele.com/blog/2016/10/16/free-14x-and-2x-teleconverters-for-lumix-users
Hello David Im interested to buy the panasonic g9 for wildlife shooting. So my quention is: i want to put a 1,4x teleconverter + speed booster + sigma lens.. I never see this before and i'm wandering if it possible..
I'm not sure there would be any purpose, Michalis. The speed booster gives the lens an extra stop of speed. The The 1.4x teleconverter loses one stop. So your (say) f/2 lens become f/1.4 with the speed booster and goes back to f/2 when the 1.4x converter takes its toll. With the image size, the speed booster halves it and the teleconverter then doubles it. Plus, having put the Sigma images through two extra lenses, IQ would be pretty much shot. Unfortunately there aren't any shortcuts to get a fast telephoto lens.
Not necessarily. The extenders from both makes are tailored to certain lenses. For older lenses there needs to be a cavity between the lens rear element and the body. Usually the adaptor would provide that room and you'd be ok but I'd want to try the particular combination before committing to paying put for what is a very expensive piece of kit.
Well David..... my teleconverter for my oly was not free or even reduced at all. grrrrrrrr. Thanks for your great videos. That comment about two Thorpes in one month made me laugh, too.
I am sure I would find this lens totally useless even though I do take wildlife photos. Why? well in the 90s I had a x2 teleconvertor for my Nikon. Did I ever use it with my 200mm f2.8? No. Did I ever use it at all after the first weekend? No, I gave it to a charity shop unused 5 years ago. Basically I just couldnt be asked to take a lens off and put it on in the field. Now I have a Panasonic GX9 and I bought a 14-140mm for nature though I find mostly my nature lens now is my Olympus 45mm f1.8. I have programmed the bottom function button to bring up digital zoom and at need I just hit x2 which gives me the equivalent of 180mm f1.8 at half real resolution, which pretty much brings me back to my old 200mm Nikon. Do I care about the crop? No, I reduce all images to 3600x2400 anyway unless they are something special from my street photography. Nature doesnt qualify, those are for my pleasure only or social media. The images from my 45mm are stunning even with the crop; I never got images like that from any of my Nikons. So if I ever get a free gratis teleconvertor with a lens its next appearance will on the pages of mpb.com ;-)
You know what you want to do and how to do it - that takes time and experience. With most photographers there's the thought that 'maybe I'll need it some time' and the lens/ converter stays on the shelf!
I really wonder why you can't use the Olympus TC14 with these Panasonic lenses. From a marketing perspective I get it. But from a technical view I don't. It almost sounds like you need to put in some effort to make these incompatible. Think about it. Without the converter in between Panasonic and Olympus lenses work great on either Pana or Oly bodies. All the converter has to do is spread out the light and pass on some electronic information (oh and multiply the focal length by 1.4 for EXIF info). If it works for one it should work for the other one would say. I already own the 40-150 2.8 Olympus so if I were to buy the Panasonic 200mm 2.8 (which I won't. Way overpriced compared to the already razor sharp Olympus) I would need to buy a second 1.4 converter. Weird.
When you mention the marketing aspect, I think that's probably spot on. I was very disappointed to find they weren't interchangeable - especially for purely physical reasons.
Just love finding these gems.
Hi , is this teleconverter working with Lumix G vario 45-200 mm with power ois ? If no are there any other teeconverter wotking with this lens ?

The Panasonic and Olympus converters only fit certain lenses from their own stable so you don't have the choice, unfortunately Lukasz.
