Huge respect to you Joe! I had subscribed to your channel years ago (31 days to better recording free pdf era & before that). I had unsubscribed from your channel last few years ago. But now I'm back to learn more. I think now what you tell makes more sense or let's say relevant to me because now I'm a full-time musician and I also offer production services. Back then I was not implementing enough of your advice. But now, I have more chances of implementing, and like you said, making music for clients will teach you a lot! I'm french and I started following you during the covid period when i was using my free time to record my music, i was a beginner. You are not only talking about music but about life in your ideos !! Great video. I believe that our 16 years old self could never dream about making a living from those income sources because they didn’t exist at the time and we had a very romantic idea about recording and touring.
As we get older, we see things differently and give priority to balancing work and family. Nowadays, being a rock star is not what I would consider a good career.
At some point in the past, I was playing gigs five times a week. Now, I barely leave my home studio.
Great video, Joe! Other possible revenue streams: Making synth/software patches/presets; making sample packs; submitting to music libraries; scoring corporate video presentations; I'm sure there a few that we both haven't mentioned.

One thing I'm starting to get into is taking all the skills in recording and performing I have and create videos of me playing all the instruments. This also gets me into video editing but also helps to develop and refine the skills I have.

This is a really good “reality hits” video. On point, for sure! I was really helped by your course, though life sorta dictated a late landing for me, (just released my first single on Dec. 29, 2023…deadlines work)… and I continue to use methods you teach, ie get a great sounding dry mix, every time I hit the studio. I am very glad that the advise given by my father to “get a vocation to fall back on and you can buy as many amplifiers as you want to” is something that I heeded and walked through…thanks Dad (rip)… PS, love Studio One…cheers!

Because of that, you deserve every dollar you make thereafter. So, paradoxically, I think the greatest strength of your business 'model' is the non-profit part. Hey Joe! Great video as always my man! My name is Tim Ash, I am a singer/songwriter/lead worshipper and all around music/gear nerd. I toured for 25+ years independently and have pretty much stopped all of that (except a few acoustic gigs here and there) to pursue most of the stuff you mentioned in this video and be home with my family every night.I have a home studio for writing/mixing and started my podcast STORIES + SONGS in January of 2023. I am excited to hear we have a mutual friend in Tommy Z.! I recently signed up for his masterclass and am almost finished/ready to start churning out some music for brands.Your channel has been very instrumental in my decisions to shift gears and pursue this "stay at home" mentality. I've been recording for 35 years as an artist and an engineer. I was fortunate enough to live in NYC and do relatively well with my band at the time. Worked with a lot of great people in great studios with great gear. After we left NYC, I ended up going to grad school for writing in Iowa and now I make my living doing review and commentary on consumer tech. The more I do that, the more I wish I'd made music more of what my channel does.
Not sure how to square that circle, but I've enjoyed watching your videos a lot over the years. You're one of the only "studio recording UA-camrs" I've watched regularly for a long time.

I’ve gotten really good over the last year with recording, mixing and mastering on Studio one Pro and Presonus! I love it and can’t get enough. I’m ready to start finding people to produce songs, content, jingles, voice over and I’m also a musician looking to be a session player. I have been a pro musician for 30+ years and can’t do live shows anymore due to health issues. I work out of my basement for production. I’m good with a lot of other aspects of music and art and am all in but I’m a bit intimidated but I’m going forward. Thanks for helping me!

Joe, my first comment is a question really. If I'm not mistaken you live in Nashville which is one of the hotbeds of the music industry (with LA, London and possibly New York City). How much would you say of your income is made possible by the fact that you live where you live? If nothing else, how much would you say it made it easier to network with other musicians and producers by living there? Thanks for all you do as always
For what its worth ... I live in NorCal but its still 750 miles from some studios in Hollywood. But your point is a good one although not as valid as it once was: Location location location. You have to connect with people.
Yes, I do live in the Nashville area. but it hasn’t been a big factor in my income. I’m sure there is a level of credibility I get from simply living here, but if I had to put a number on it, I would say less than 5% of my income has come from “networking“ in Nashville. My most profitable relationships have come through meeting people on the Internet, over UA-cam, etc..
@Joe Gilder Home Studio pertaining to the Service section: being that I have a home studio session work sounds exciting to me since I just had someone reach out to me asking to use my studio to do a recording session. Simultaneously, I feel somewhat nervous also pertaining to the service section as in regards to mixing, mastering,,and production as it’s something I really want to learn. However, every time I start watching and trying to learn from tutorials here on UA-cam, I get overwhelmed and intimidated by the process.
Feeling nervous is normal. The idea of putting yourself out there can be really scary. As far as learning how to mix and master, I know that I am incredibly biased, but I would take a course rather than trying to figure it out from random UA-cam videos. Doesn’t have to be my course, but courses are better structured to help you understand the process on a deeper level. Plus the fact that you paid for it will make you more likely to actually do something with it.

Joe, I've been searching for awhile now and I know it's probably going to be am easy thing lol. I know you can drag and drop an audio event to a different track but is there a keyboard shortcut to move that event up one track like on protools?
Great video Joe! You presented an important topic, i.e., making money in the music business, that's rarely covered. One thing I'm surprised that you didn't mention is the symbiotic relationship between your various sources of income. Specifically, I've got to believe that, given the fact that a large part of your income is derived from courses and memberships and you have 11 other sources of income, those contribute directly and indirectly to your overall success. Given that less than 5% of your income has come from networking in Nashville per your reply to another comment to this video, it's obvious to me that the indirect source of a fair amount of your income is the interest and goodwill that you generate from your internet-related activities, including your UA-cam and PreSonus' UA-cam channels. Speaking personally, I discovered you on your UA-cam channel when I was researching studio recording. I have watched and enjoyed many of your YT videos as well as several of your PreSonus YT videos. Wishing you continued success!
You're spot on. Providing tons of value (over 1,000 videos) on UA-cam since 2009 made a HUGE difference.
There’s also composing for movies / writing music for anime, games & adverts if you can compose!

Hey Joe.I've been a big fan of you,Graham and Dueling mixes.My situation is I was born without ears and I mix with headphones.I know there people out there with similar conditions.I've always wanted to set up a platform for the hearing impaired.I'm living proof that it's possible to record,mix,master and release viable music to the social media.I've released 2 single and am working on my 10 song EP.If the desire is there go for it and don't let anything keep you from what you love....making music.........

Hey Joe, awesome video! I've always wanted to make money just performing music for people and traveling the world and touring, but I also love creating and recording music. What popped up for me during this video, is whether I should focus my time and energy in building a career performing music (been playing Guitar for 8+years) alone and with friends and start making money in that way, or if I should invest most of my time and energy into getting better at writing and recording music so I can build a career around that. I want to quit my day job and make money from music as soon as possible but torn on where I should invest my time and energy. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated! :D
This was an eye opening video! I’m curious how significant the church gig portion accounts for. That’s not something I have any experience with.
Not a huge amount, but I've been on staff as the worship leader at a few churches. So it took up a considerable amount of time, but honestly didn't make much money.

great video. I have taken some of your courses and mix alongs, as well as Graham's courses over the years. My 18 year old self took a turn from music as a career and did the computer science thing and made a really good living out of it. I am newly retired (12/31/2023) now. After years of being a wanna be musician/artist, I can say I have songs out now for public consumption. I finally got around to finishing two songs and joined Distrokid to get them distributed. It was a scary proposition putting my work out there but I did it! I even have my UA-cam OAC (go subscribe) set up now. you hit on one idea I will be pursuing - videos on how I write and record. Maybe someone will enjoy watching how I do things because I know I enjoy seeing everyone else's processes and home studios. thanks for all the videos over the years, including your Personus stuff (I use Studio One too).
That's a truthful video, bit there is a very sad message included for the music/song itself.. And that in a world where everybody is hearing music..
That’s one way of looking at it. But everyone listened to music in the 70s and there was ZERO chance anyone would hear your music unless a record label picked you. Today people can hear your music. To me that’s happy not sad.
In my music experiences, people who consider themselves "sellouts," or other musicians and DJ sellouts, are the ones who stayed stuck in an OLD world while myself, and others moved on and advanced in our creations, flexibility and expansion..
🤔So basically, being just an artist won't make you money? Because streaming pays penny, touring is complicated and i said being an artist not a engineer or promoter, or teacher etc im aksing is there any hope of making money as just an artist?
Hey Joe, Great Video diving into a multitude of Ideas. Some of the comments have even stirred up some ideas especially since I am a Muti-Keyboardist Recording Engineer/Producer. Making synth/software patches/presets; making sample packs as Peterelfman has mentioned below. Not to totally get off the subject. But the Producer tag, unfortunately, does not seem to have the impact it once did years ago. See if you agree. What I mean is back in the '70s to '80s when you talked about a Producer it was a thrilling idea, someone special to work with, almost to the hype of a Movie star. Nowadays anyone and everyone is calling themselves a Producer simply because they are trying to produce content on UA-cam etc. Good, Bad, or Horrible. I almost hesitate to even use the term since I feel its meaning has gotten lost with all of these wanna-be somebodies calling them Producers who couldn't Produce themselves out of a paper bag...LOL... Not sure if you agree with my perception 100% about some of today's so-called Producers out there, but it's what it is...... Don't get me wrong there are of course a lot of Grade "A" Producers out there mixed in with the other not-so-good Producers. Which sometimes makes it hard for people who are looking for a Good Producer to find them... Always look forward to watching and learning from your insight...... Thx ElectricEddie

How much to have you critique and mentor?
One of the things I thought of is I work in like lofi Hiphop meets ambient space and I have no lie at least a thousand unfinished songs. And I've been curious about making my own sample packs out of em. Like I couldn't figure this idea out maybe these stems will spark others. Anyone knowledgeable in that space that could provide some info?
The whole idea of selling beats is very intriguing, because there is a huge market. You could use my business model to sell beats. You would just sell the sample packs instead of selling courses like I do, but it could be a very cool business.
I want to get really good at producing music and invite people to my home studio to record. I would like to be able ot earn money from this and having artist coming in and out will help me build connections, inspire me, and make me a better muscian. This scares me but I will do it
I'm a hobbyist musician who achieved a goal of putting out an album that I recorded myself. So far I've made a few cents on Spotify and a few dollars on Bandcamp, but I have not done real marketing. Meanwhile I can make dollars per day on a blockchain platform. I know that word turns a lot of people off so I won't mention the name, but there are options beyond the big corporations.
Same as having one other non-music-related-work instead of 13 and just playing your music. Yes, it sells for a little or none and no exposure you could generate for it if you are around music business. How many tracks Nike need?
Just let it be. Not everyone need/can do any of 13 and it’s a pity they keep trying (instead of getting a job and making better music at the rest of your hours).
I think best advise if to optimize/minimize your other money making to let more time/juices for your music.
The real breakthrough will be only when AI and chatgpt like interface will let listener to find and reach out to music THEY want to hear. From any original musician first hand. Not from algorithm suggestion like it is today. Then I believe amount of listeners/payout will be enough to make every musician happy with their income and music exposure.
I don't think I understand your last paragraph. Right now I can listen to any artist I want on Apple Music. No algorithm involved.

Say you like Depeche Mode. Simple example. Can algorithm offer you a cool song alike from an artist you never knew of? Should be a breeze for AI.
But no, algorithm is tuned to offer “popular”, which is driven by plays, which is by playlists, so promotion and in few sings you are from electronic on a hip-hop track. So you back Apple to an artist you know.
So far AI is only abused to feed you promoted content. When instead it would offer you a new song you actually LIKE it will be a revolution for listeners and artists yo reach out.
I've discovered new artists on playlists for styles of music. And I'm okay with it showing me music that is "driven by plays." That means it's good music that lots of people want to listen to.

Less than 200 plays - you suck, no pay, your money go to artists making “good music” LOL Best case scenario, or just to curated playlists or playlist scammers.
Anyways not the point. AI nowadays can do so much better in song style/mood/vibe detection. I wish to have a slider between playsalike song recommendation.
Lots of plays doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good, but it does mean that a lot of people like it, which is a valuable piece of data. If I go look at a UA-cam channel, and all the videos only have 60 views on them, then I will make assumptions about the quality of the videos; they are probably not very good.
As a lad, I had always hoped to generate income by setting up a kissing booth dedicated solely to a clientele of female supermodels. I still hold out some hope, but as my hair disappears and my waistline extends, this seems less and less practical with each passing decade. Thanks, Joe. -JTW

What your speaking of, in regards to"product music", is called Sync Licensing and thanks to A.I., we sync producers are about to be put out of business!! Where it takes us 20 or more hours to produce ONE sync piece, already there are A.I. "services", producing 100's in minutes for almost zero cost... welcome to the new world... human musicians getting screwed AGAIN!!
Yeah, that stinks, but we humans are pretty smart and adaptable when we want to be. Cars replaced horses. Computers replaced typewriters. With every big technology development comes both loss and opportunity.
Im a self taught recording artist and I mostly mix my own music. I had the idea of taking the time to get into audio engineering and production. This scares me a little.

I honestly doubt it. The theme in this video is to create things that people want to buy. It doesn’t seem to me that people want to buy music, whether that’s a CD or an NFT.

It's all about pride. Not wanting to be a sellout is an absolutely ludicrous idea. Being homeless for your music isn't impressive or artistic.
Toto is the perfect example of how to sell out perfectly. Write hits to make money and then fill your albums with crazy fusion and play at local bars the music you truly want to play and record.

When someone feels the need to set up a defense speech, there is probably some kind of problem with the whole thing. Anyone who sets aside their own values and integrity for money alone is considered a sellout. The problem arises when all these side jobs kill the creative drive and joy of freely creating and playing the music you prefer. Therefore, many creators choose a completely different money job to maintain their creative integrity. If, on the other hand, you enjoy doing all these side jobs, feel that they enrich your creativity and you get something out of it, it’s surely an great asset. 😎

You're frustrated. I get that. But I have an honest question. Has there ever been a time in history where someone could make their living by making music all day every day? If we go back a few hundred years, you've got composers like Bach or artists like Michelangelo. Oftentimes they were commissioned by churches or monarchs to create their art. They were the best in the world, so they made money. What about all the other "good" composers and artists?
Or like I mentioned in this video, let's go back just 50 years to the 1970s, did anyone make a living by playing music all day every day? Only the best ones who got picked by record labels. A handful of people.
If today was 1974, and you weren't one of the handful of best musician in the world, you didn't have the option to even dream about making a living from music.
Today you do.
You may not like it, but there's more opportunity today then there ever has been. And yes, it requires work and entrepreneurship. It always has.
So yes, in a perfect world I could sit and play my guitar all day, and money would just flow into my bank account. But that's never been reality, throughout the history of mankind. So why would that be a reality today?
And for what it's worth, if you learn the skills of creating a business, you can get to a point where you can play music all day.
I’m OK not making money with my music. For me, the two rewards I seek are 1) my own satisfaction with what I produce and 2) seeing that others whose opinions I value enjoy what they hear.
My track record so far with my only original songs has been a fizzle. I submitted my first one to a Home Studio Corner challenge last year. It didn’t even make it to the livestream. I made a crude video on iMovie with public domain photos and synced it with the recording of my second song. One year on UA-cam and counting, 300 views (and many of them were me).
About the best spin I can put on this is “if at first you don’t succeed,…”

That's great info but let's be honest with each other, none of those is why people wanted to play music in the first place. They want to be creative with their own musical vision, not write jingles for Amazon. Might as well get a non-musical job.
I kind of think like this sometimes, but then I ask myself if I'd rather answer phones and talk to assholes or play notes for money
Like I said in the video, all the ways that I have chosen to make money have been incredibly fulfilling and creative activities for me. No, it’s not the way I thought I would make my living, especially when I was a kid with a dream of being a rockstar, but it is 1000% more creative and fulfilling than any “day job” I’ve had. And in my case, it pays much better.

I’m sure they would. But that’s kind of the point of this video. There are ways to make money from music other than selling original music. I can’t teach how to make millions from selling music, because I haven’t made millions from selling music. To make millions from selling music, you need millions and millions of followers, you need to be that good. Thankfully, there are many other ways to create income without relying on a record label to pick you, or without relying on needing a massive fanbase. Those are the things I talked about in this video.
I appreciate the ideas, but by doing all of those other things, you’re not doing the one thing that it’s all about which is creating music.
Somehow artists need to take back the power from the streaming platforms and quit letting mega corporations take advantage. This absolutely will have a negative impact on the quality of music Because artists who cannot survive on their music in a competitive market, will simply do something else.
It’s interesting that you assume that I’m not making music. I certainly am. I’m also finding ways to make money other than selling my music.
