  • LIMBURG: Rescue in sight! New solution for the city pigeon problem! Relocation instead of killing!
The population of Limburg in Hesse is looking for ways to end the pigeon plague in the city. A referendum in favor of killing the pigeons caused a stir nationwide. Now there is an alternative solution: the Austrian animal protection initiative Gut Aiderbichl has offered to take in 200 pigeons from Limburg and give them a new home. Mayor Marius Hahn (SPD) explained that this offer was a much milder measure and that he was very grateful to the animal protection association Gut Aiderbichl based in Salzburg. The animal rights activists will cover the costs of transporting and housing the pigeons, while Limburg must catch the animals.
"With Gut Aiderbichl, we have, for the first time in the discussion, an opportunity to reduce the population quickly without killing animals," said Hahn. Other institutions and people who would be willing to take on Limburg pigeons could help to reduce the population to the target of around 300 animals. Last year, up to 700 pigeons were counted in Limburg city center.
After the referendum in June, the city administration received hundreds of letters, many of which expressed incomprehension. There were also insults, abuse and threats against the mayor and other politicians and city employees.
