Good helpful information, so how/when does the layer or fiber structure develop during manufacturing and why? Why doesn't the iron just congeal into a homogeneous mass as it is rolled out? Do you know?

    Thanks for the info.
I recently came across some wrought iron from some farm equipment in outback Australia. It looks like the good stuff you were talking about. How do the layers compare with the lower grades? Are the layers packed tighter etc? I'm hoping to use it and put it in vinegar to bring the layers out....

Definitely steel. I hacksawed a bit and broke it off. I could see the fibres. I also did the spark test. The steel also had hammer marks from forging and hand made rivets.

Excellent information Roy. Most of the wrought I come across is from older farm machinery. I need to get in touch with a guy, who junked an old wood framed hay rake. Some of the components are believed to be wrought....they pulled it to a dry creek bed and rolled it in. (But I know where they hid the body) ;)

    Neglected a spark test.

I have some old steel from an old pull farm disc. I'm thinking it may be wrought iron. I'm going to have to have to look at it a little closer.

I was ableto buy some short poieces 7"-8" of various thickness 3/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4 etc... but im not having much luck finding more. for the stuff im doing those legths work well for me. knives and tomahawks and stuff like that. I dont need real long sections. I live near Pittsburgh so I would think there would be plenty around with a nice mix of farms and industry. Just not good at knowing where to look yet.
