Simo Häyhä, a Finnish sniper, earned the nickname "The White Death" during the Winter War (1939-1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union. With over 500 confirmed kills, he became a legend in military history. Häyhä was known for his incredible ability to blend into the snowy landscape. He wore all-white camouflage and used the natural environment to his advantage, making him nearly invisible to his enemies.
Unlike many snipers who used scopes, Häyhä preferred iron sights on his rifle. He believed that scopes could fog up or reflect sunlight, giving away his position. This choice made his achievements even more impressive. Häyhä holds the record for the highest number of confirmed sniper kills in any major war. His tally of over 500 kills in just 100 days is unmatched.
Despite being severely wounded by an explosive bullet to the jaw, Häyhä survived and continued to live a long life. He recovered from his injuries and lived to the age of 96, passing away in 2002. Häyhä's reputation as "The White Death" struck fear into the hearts of Soviet soldiers. His incredible marksmanship and stealth made him a formidable opponent on the battlefield.
