Loving your channel iv few acres in Galway need to top rushes as grounds been neglected over the year s wondering if you or any subscriber s have any tips for a good flail topper for back of quad ,hope you don’t mind me asking ,keep up the good work 👍
Nice one, we have a 50B too, replaced a few seals etc already. The manual throttle is to the right hand side of the seat down on the floor, sticks out the very base of the seat. The big lever on the right is for the diff lock. The square plate in the toolbox with the 4 holes is the drive flange for the hydraulic pump, and the shaft with the gear is one of the hydraulic pumps gears. If you ever need to replace the pump shaft it is a reverse thread (left hand) we had to do the rubber dampers on the flange a while ago and the drive coupling sheared. White house hydraulics still do bits for the pump and the drive couplings. SJ spares did the rubber dampers and most of the seals we got from sparex and malpas tractors.
Adrian, being as meticulous, tidy and thorough as he is, I think that over time, we can expect to see this be eventually fully restored with a new paint job. Adrian may be thinking of only fixing what is necessary at this point in time, but I'm pretty sure that it not being 'complete' and looking good will bother him little by little. In this video, he spoke about changing the plastic glass for a different and better substitute. I'll wager that this substitute eventually will be replaced with proper glass. ...and so on and so forth...This is what I like about Adrian. He looks after his equipment so that it looks after him.
As you sit looking out the front window, there should be a hand throttle down on the floor at your right hand, under the seat. We have a standard clutch and gear 50B. Best machine ever was made. That's where the hand throttle is. Good luck with your machine. Im looking forward to seeing her in her former glory.
Is that for burying the money, no Cavan jokes. Great purchase for the farm, very handy and will do the same job as a machine at twice the cost. When I seen you with the shovel cleaning the drains I thought that man needs a wee digger. 😀
A little spit… a little polish… a little power washing… a little sand blasting… some welding… some cursing… some new parts… some paint…. And there you go! Perfection! 😁. Adrian, tractor Time With Tim and Goodworks Tractors have some videos on third-function kits. I think Tim did a few videos on that topic. And Lord Muck and Clarence Fud-Weasel are to UK gents that have a lot of knowledge on tractor rebuilding. Clarence rebuilds a lot from bottom to top and likely knows what you need. Gotta love UA-cam at times! Stay Safe!!!
Adrian, I'm in no doubt you will make some job of that 50B! Will be shining like a new pin in a couple of months!😁Can always see you have your dad and family in mind with all your decisions.. Great to see :)
Great machine. My mother bought one for her smallholding about 6 months ago. It starts on the button every time, all weathers. Fantastic value for money compared with the costs of hiring a digger
Looking forward to following this project Adrian, I’m sure father phill will be able to point you in the right direction with parts and things? If previous projects are anything to go by, she’ll be winning local shows next year 😉
Used the MF 50 B with instant reverse loading lime spreaders the front loader was exceptionally especially with the toque converter, But the rear actor was a heap of rubbish, Always breaking and finally snapped the bottom housing right through which supports the swing motor, Ended up buying a Matbro ram 40 D from Matbro in Horley Surrey, For loading muck & sludge also lime. Great show and especially good camera positioning 🇬🇧🇮🇪.
Best of luck with the 50B, as I was once told anyone can drive a good machine but it takes a good man to drive any machine, you wont believe how handy it will become, I have a 86 Hitachi uho25 I wud be lost without it never let's me down. Best of luck and health to enjoy.
The shaft in the toolbox is for the steering if i remember correctly. There should be a hand throttle i think its on the floor under the chair. If it is pulling on the back wheels get the half axels checked i had a nightmare with one in the past it ceased itself solid on a busy road. I had to nurse it all the way home with the assistance of the back actor
I worked on a big 1000 acre estate many years ago and they had a 50B, it did all the feeding, loaded all the dung, the straw, and put over 700 acres of silage in pits every year to feed 450 cows and their followers. Over 1000 head. The back actor was off it.
Both of the ones I owned had manual throttle for working the rear actor, One was 75 and the other was 1980, The torque converter increases throttle the further each pedal is pushed down great system and never once gave any trouble.🇬🇧.
The linkage at the front was for a throttle cable from memory, damm good old digger, the steering can be fun on the road when they are worn, but good simple old yokes Love the videos you put on, keep them coming.
hi adrian the hand throttle should be under the seat on the right hand sided also if you press both foot peddles together that will rev rev the engine best machine ever made
Love, love, love your optimism. You're gonna love getting stuck in to that project. " It's missing a door, but it came with it." Laughed out loud, Adrian. Thank you for a smashing video. 😊
Many a pit of silage pushed up with the MF50 and 50B.. like anything a good service kept them in work. Get your proper glass for the cab along with your door. I will try find out more info for you I do remember a stack of them being sent to Africa without cabs.
Adrian, well done on the Massey digger. Great backup for the silage pit, but fabulous for drain work and shoughts on the farm.........Spend a bit , keep out of the weather and it should be a permanent tool on the farm.
Good luck with your purchase ,as said in comments hand throttle under seat at 17.21 minutes ,little rod use only for digging engine should be at idle when pressing forward or reverse to prevent a shock to the driveline ,two pedals together for rpm to give power for lifting foot off to change gear .Are the breaks sticking on one side causing drag or issue with planetary hub inside the wheel .Looking forward to the repair videos
Adrian ya have made my day! My uncle had one of those when I was young but sold it before I was old enough to appreciate it! Really looking forward to all the upcoming content!
Had an MF211on the Farm I worked on when I left school. Very handy. Used it to load silage out of the clamp and in the summer took off the backacter and used to stack big round bales. There was a User Manual in the shed for it. Among other "How to" sections it even had full instructions of how to use the machine to dig graves
Drove one for years and their is no problem fitting a third service fitted one years ago their should be a hand throttle on it as well I now have a 3cx best of luck
Both had the four in one bucket on them they did bob and bonce a bit down the road but with the back actor moved across and folded up as it should be I think you will find it will not bonce so much the third spool your missing would have been for the four in one bucket (factory option from new) so I think you could find a new spool block. We would use them with the flat eight and loading spreaders, many a winter ditching for the council on the roads and many footings and barns dug with them. @@IFarmWeFarm
Well wear with her. Your right they are very handy yoked around a farm. Have a 59hx here for the last 20 years. A but shook but mechanically perfect. Rebuilt the engine a few years back and its purring away.same loader and back actor as your 50b. The lock rams on the back are single acting which is why you dont see them working. Once you turn the pressure off they can move, you actually lift or lower the back arm arm they retract. Once in position turn the pressure back on and they lock. We have removed the king post a few times as they can wear. Your are right to just replace it fully. Can be a bit trick so best to do it on flant solid ground and have enough room for the loader tractor as you will need it to take the arm on and off. Trying to remember about the hand throttle as cousins of mine had one years ago and it had one. Think it was under the seat. Will be watching with interest as I need to do a few jobs on mine and need to get a new slew motor. Might try counghnatys to see if they have one. Another good place for info is MP Crowley in Cork. They were agents and have loads of experience of work on them. The lock
I have seen lots of JCBs, but never one of these, i can only imagine what a sweet job will be done to make this a top working machine, keep at her Lad!
That was the heater control under the dash, I think the hand throttle for when you are using the back actor is a little leaver down at floor level at base off seat👍
Worked for a gentleman years ago on Bt duct work got new 50b every nine months. He got top dollar for his used machines . Great machines for road track work
I remember my grandad had one on his farm when I was growing up. But it was a non backhoe model with a concrete counterweight in the back. Unfortunately it was the manual gearbox model. Absolutely savage loader tractor all the same. Actually he had two the other had a backhoe. It lived in the headge for spares
Nice addition.. i can honestly say it will be a handy second loader to have as well.. we have a 50B mk2 with 2 stick digger control, ( posh 😂) the torque converter and floor pedals shuttles which when you press them both down together you get revs with no movement. It came home when i worked at a local dealers FarmServices when i was 17ish and its still with us... now im 44 ish 😅 .. and to be fair we haven't spent a lot on her but she is always ready to go and work when asked.. steering drop shaft was replaced though that made a huge difference. Stay safe 🏴
She is nice . We have the 50hx version and the cabs tend to rote badly so make sure you watch the cab . And the 50hx has the two levers instead of about 10
I love to see you fix up old stuff to make it good again!! Wish I could help with sanding rust and spray painting yellow, but I'm old and in the US so you'll have to do the best you can on your own. 🤣😂🤣😂 Look forward to the rehab beginning!!! I'll bet you are glad you got your workshop all ready to use.
I can not wait, to see that thing in the correct fire red, bigger tires, a chrome exhaust, LED lights and with a nice job of Mr. Sticker! (beside the technical issues)
Twin of the first digger i started on when i was 12 loaded a lot of dung and cleaned out a queer lot of drains on that 50B. When i was 18 i worked for a contractor who had the same machine and i loaded 1000s of tons of beat with her dug out hundreds of stones while ploughing and dug in miles of land drainage great machine will do a power of work for you with a bit of a tidy up. Peter Egan in carlow used to break massey diggers and still has a fair yard of breakers there hes a yanmar dealer now.
I'm glad you bought used and old. Much better than new. At about 19:00 mins in, something made an awful crack. You might want to listen to it and see if you can figure out what made the noise. I like the name you gave it, Bob (burying the odd boyfriend)!
Some years back I put a divert valve on bucket pipes ( in cab ) as a third service and ran the pipes out to service a shear grab . Worked perfectly and was a very cheap solution at the time .
Hey how's it going we have massey 50 B your hand throttle down at the side of your seat on a leaver and if you press your two foot peddles together you'll also get more engine revs for the front loader
Hey Adrian, nice little machine there. That little shaft with the cog in the toolbox, very important service tool! It's actually a shaft from a front hydraulic pump. You will need it if you ever want to change the fan belt. The machine is different to your regular old Massey as it has a shaft running from the lower pulley forward to the pump which needs to be removed and slid forward to change the fan belt, a hateful job!! When you take off the hydraulic pump, that shaft slides into the splines of the shaft and you can use a stilson to unthread it and pull it forward enough to pass the fan belt through. Handy that it came with it because we did a fair bit of head scratching the first time we had to replace a belt on our 50hx. Best of luck with it👍 Edit: now that I think about it, I think you can actually unbolt the plate on the front of the pulley rather than unscrew the shaft but you will still need the spare shaft to turn the engine to reach the bolts. Been a while since I've had to do it, thank god!
Congratulations on your purchase of a fine vintage machine that hopefully will pay for itself in content for your Channel that we ❤️ love. Hopefully it will clean a shuck or two for you too.😊
Great video Adrian. Really looking forward to seeing you getting stuck in that old girl & bringing her back to her former glory. Be great to see your dad behind the controls 👍
To me also. The three letters of JCB gave this kind of machine its Welsh name, regardless of who makes it. We call it 'Jac Codi Baw', which literally means 'jack (for) lifting dirt'.
Great machine we run about 4 50bs on our farm with the last 20 years. Something you should look out for is a 3 service unit comes with the 3 levers all you have to do is join your pipes. Another thing you should do is put a hydrostatic unit into it you wont regret it if you do, makes the steering so much better if your lifting Something heavey with the front loader such as a bale of silage
Ya the steering ram was always trouble, i remember our own 50B back in late 80s, got rebuilt a few times. Some amount of silage it pushed up back then.
Can never have to many machines that can load stuff on a dairy farm the loader on that 50b will be more handy than you think! Got 2 loadalls and a tractor loader and still sometimes need another machine to move stuff about!
Best of luck with the new purchase we have a 50B here on the farm since 88 feedin cattle with a 5ft shear grab very reliable machine .the shaft ya found in the tool box is from the original hyd pump in behind the front grill .ya might look into gettin a second hand back actor slide unit .a lot of welding on different components on yours
Lovely machine Adrian obviously there is work to be done on her but what I like about it is it’s all there and original as could be and it’s definitely in the right place for getting the vip treatment 😄👌🏻👍🏼
Drove one of these as a kid, moving it around a field picking stones, great machine and memories. Looking forward to seeing you working on and in the 50B :)
Hi Adrian, the 212 engine was the bigger engine that was available in the 165. But the 236 engine was the same that was in the 168, 175 or 575. All the best with her!!
Hand throttle is leaver beside the seat Adrian. Best of luck with it I have one here myself I wouldn’t be without it it’s 41 years here in the yard and will never leave I’m no expert on them but any help I can give just ask. You won’t be sorry you bought it all the best with it great machines
@@IFarmWeFarm it’s ok Adrian did you check the oil in the steering reservoir on the side of the engine? We had issues a few years back but it was linkage at the front behind the hydraulic pump there’s great steering on it now since we got that resolved.
Sorry video is a little late this morning, cattle went for a wee wander on us 🐄. Hope ya’s enjoy. 👍
Are u going to put new lights on ur digger back and front and beacons on ur digger too

Great machine.
Probably easiest to look for a 3 lever spool block for the loader, rather than an extra slice.
You will never be without one now. Impossible to imagine not having one after you get your first.

What a lucky digger! That old digger will look awesome when you are done with it! Hopefully it will work for you for years more to come!

Had one brand new in 79 and then brought a 50B MK 2 as well a year or two later, Oh boy did we earn some money with them.
Ah brilliant, they were great in there day. Had you ever an issue with the front end been light and hard to steer because of that?

The hand throttle is on the Wright hand side of the seat I had 2 of these diggers back the years
Looks like you have a nice winter project! Enjoy the rebuild...
This will be a real challenge. Wish you the best of luck with the rebuild. Thank you for sharing.🐄
If I remember right, the hand throttle was on the seat support box , a lever sticking out the side of it
Adrian, looks like a great buy! No doubt your magical hands will do some job on your new 50B! Looking forward to that video. Well done!

I put up silage with a 50b in the late 80’s / early 90’s …. Great machines!
Im shocked by the speed of the front loader, a seriously useful tool once you tidy it up.
Hi Adrian, EBay presently have a number of Massey 50B workshop service manuals in hard copy. Brand new reprinted copy’s.

Hey how's it going we have massey 50 B your hand throttle down at the side of your seat on a leaver and if you press your two foot peddles together you'll also get more engine revs for the front loader
Best of luck with your new purchase.
Seeing that machine move made my day! :D Beautiful!! :D Thanks lots.
Best of luck with it👍
Edit: now that I think about it, I think you can actually unbolt the plate on the front of the pulley rather than unscrew the shaft but you will still need the spare shaft to turn the engine to reach the bolts. Been a while since I've had to do it, thank god!
Sounds a fun job 🙈, thanks for that tip lad. I took a screen shot of it to keep as a reference when needed 👌👍

That'll B a handy thing about the place. There was also a 50D, 50H & 50Hx. Probably a couple of others as well, im not too sure.
One of the most important things to do pull the main pump off the front and pack the gear shaft with grease i have 1976 one in good condition
Burying the odd boyfriend down the road. That one cracked me up! Enjoy your new machinery. I bet it gets new paint too.
Great video Adrian. Really looking forward to seeing you getting stuck in that old girl & bringing her back to her former glory. Be great to see your dad behind the controls 👍
To me them machines will always be called a JCB anyway congratulations on your new machine and have fun with all the work you will use it for
To me also. The three letters of JCB gave this kind of machine its Welsh name, regardless of who makes it. We call it 'Jac Codi Baw', which literally means 'jack (for) lifting dirt'.
You will have it shining!
Looking forward to seeing the video's of the repairs being done on this
I used to put in silage with one of them 30 years ago some job on the shear grab
This will be a great winter evenings project for you
Great video Adrian, I’m sure you will get the Massey up to your standards. Good luck with her. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼
Drove one of these as a kid, moving it around a field picking stones, great machine and memories. Looking forward to seeing you working on and in the 50B :)
Adrian, you have some great attitude about your new purchase. A BIG project! Good thing you have “8” days in a week!
There is a hand throttle on side of the seat mount if I remember correctly
Looking forward to see what you do with it Adrian
Well a Welsh farmer favourite from the seventies and eighties. Mighty loader and a handy backacter. Sold a few as well in my time.
Hi Adrian, the 212 engine was the bigger engine that was available in the 165. But the 236 engine was the same that was in the 168, 175 or 575. All the best with her!!
Thanks for the show Adrian, watch out for the telephone cables and water lines
03:10 Haha! I hope your daughters take note!
Hand throttle is leaver beside the seat Adrian. Best of luck with it I have one here myself I wouldn’t be without it it’s 41 years here in the yard and will never leave I’m no expert on them but any help I can give just ask. You won’t be sorry you bought it all the best with it great machines
Cheers mate. Appreciate that greatly. Just one question! Did you find your light on the front end? Leaves it very hard to steer 🤔
@@IFarmWeFarm it’s ok Adrian did you check the oil in the steering reservoir on the side of the engine? We had issues a few years back but it was linkage at the front behind the hydraulic pump there’s great steering on it now since we got that resolved.
Hand trottle present. It on the housing that seat is mounted on at right hand side.
