In the bridge, Joakim sings about paying "The Price of a Mile" which might be seen as a reference to Sabaton's song of the same name, which happens to be about Passchendaele. It's fucking hard-hitting and also one of Sabaton's all-time classics.

"The war to end all wars" is such a powerful lyric, laced with irony and sadness. along with "I know my deeds are not in vain" It gives the song an ironic and saddening feeling that whatever soldier is singing this would be very disappointed by the fact that war does in fact continue in the world even after their sacrifice.

Check out a live performance of the band playing the song "Resist & Bite" for Joakim playing guitar. They used to make a big ol thing out of it. Basically Joakim would steal Thobbe England's guitar and play some easy riffs for laughs, then some recognizable ones from Slayer and such, and then Thobbe and Chris would come out and school him with some sick solos, and then they would go into "Resist & Bite" with all three of them playing guitar.

Here is a video of a variation of the bit, it doesn't have him goofing around and pretending he can't play in this one (there are plenty of other vids you can find where he does) But it has him playing riffs from "Beat It" by Michael Jackson and "Master Of Puppets" by Metallica. Just cut I off before the 5:00 mark if you wanna avoid hearing the song for the first time on a phone.

There are still parts of France that are off limits today due to the pollution left from WWI, the Zone Rouge(Red Zone). Artillery shells, grenades, ammunition, human and animal bodies, plus chemicals like mercury, arsenic, and chlorine. It's estimated that at current clean up rates, it will take between 300-700 years to completely clean these areas.

I highly recommend you listen to "Angels Calling ft. Apocalyptica," "Price of a Mile," or "The End of the War to End All Wars." These are all songs about World War I and I love all three of them.
Side note, if you do decide to listen to "The End of the War to End All Wars" I suggest you listen to the very last song in the Great War album "In Flanders Fields." It's a poem written by Canadian physician John McCrae while serving during the First World War.

I have listened to this song so many times but I've never heard the officers whistle, to tell his men to go over the top, before the first chorus...That legit gave me goosebumps...Also there's a little museum in Belgium or France where a full box of dogtags is the "main attraction". The museumkeeper is activley looking for the families of the fallen the tags belonged to. Every year he finds like three to five he can send the tags and letters etc. to.

I'm (very) late to the party, but I've seen Joakim "play" guitar and if my memory serves me correctly it was in 2017 in Bratislava. During the first break the crowd "forced" Joakim to down a beer - proper half a liter of draft beer - which is kind of a tradition where everyone just chants "Pivo" (beer), they always have at least one ready, Joakim then downs it like an absolute champ and everyone is happy. But I digress, then during the second break Joakim took a guitar and tried to play, I think he managed a power chord or two, horsed around a bit and that was pretty much it.
Also fun fact, Hannes didn't play the show I'm mentioning, because it was around the time his daughter was born, in case you didn't know, with Floor from Nightwish.

So the song Price of a Mile is a great song to show the horrors of the great war, you should probably know the story since if you know the song Passhandale from Maiden same story so price of a mile is around 75k souls and 6 miles of ground gained at the cost of 450k lives lost(both sides) only to be lost a couple of weeks later (as I write this I just reached the solo and sabaton said it themselves) also soldiers said they could tell when they were walking over bodies because of the ground being more squashy I think I could be wrong on the wording
Also Price of a mile is one hell of a song

About the bombs and grenades, which can still be found:
There are still bombs in the earth, close to big cities. (I am not talking just about WW I, but also WW II).
Here in Dresden, we had to evacuate parts of the city 2-3 years ago, as an aircraft bomb from WWII was found right beside a gas station. It was just found, as they wanted to construct a new building there and therefore dug a bit deeper than before.
Basically people woke up everyone in the area at 2 am and everyone was evacuated within 12 hours. (most people were evacuated in the first 5-6 hours, but there were some retierment homes, which took a lot longer. It took 3 days until we were able to get back to our homes. Luckily it does not happen so often anymore, but it happens frmo time to time. And it is not just in rural areas.
It is an interesting experience to get evacauted because of that and shows you how long the horror of war stil exist and can cause harm, even though the wars are so long ago.

    Tank,
thank you very much for some Great Tou- I mean Great Saturdays :D
Even though I already knew Sabaton, I've always learned something new when I watched your videos, and overall, they made me respect Sabaton (and any live band, really) much more, because of all the work that needs to happen to give the fans a Great Show (as you said, 12 hours of work for 2 hours of "payoff")! Even though you stop the band-specific days, I'm glad that you said that you will continue Sabaton reactions eventually, I am looking forward to seeing them with Great Anticipation! Ok, enough with the Great Jokes and 2 more things that might interest you:
    1) Joakim plays the Guitar during Resist & Bite, it is part of the show, /watch?v=5bZuNg79VUk is a good example, I think.
    2) Regarding the huge Setup of Sabaton's Live Shows, I recently found a few "Sabaton Live Acoustic" videos, where they play in front of a relatively tiny crowd with a cajón, acoustic guitars, and an acoustic bass (I've always wondered if these are a thing). It is such an unfamiliar look/sound, but I really liked it and I think you might find it interesting as well :) Here is an example /watch?v=XfGKDUQwVLQ
Great Weekend to you and Greetings from Germany,
    Alexander

The Great War album has a "History" version, where a lady gives a little narrative intro to each of the first eleven songs. The narration for this one is:
"Passchendaele. 1917. No Man's Land. *Not* a great place to be. Upon command, thousands of soldiers will march straight into the crossfire of thousands of guns, while the endless rain keeps pouring down. Perhaps it will raise a question: What is so 'great' about war?"

Three words....Iron Maiden Paschendale....it’s on the dance of death album, I recommend the live version for the stage setup where the roadies were in WWI trench uniforms setting up no mans land not the best audio but the remaster does the song massive justice.
It doesn’t give as much information as Sabaton but it really conveys the way a trench soldier felt during that battle

Great War is technically a sequel/retelling of Price of a Mile. Price of a Mile is sung about the Battle of Paschendale, this song is song from the perspective of a Soldier, described as a Mushroom by the band since, "he was kept in the dark and fed Bullshit." from the same battle.

This chorus is amazing AF..!!! Quite bittersweet thinking of the story behind it, as with many other Sabaton songs, but shows the power of art, to transform something bad or sad into something awesome..!

One of the best anti-war songs I’ve heard. I really enjoyed your observations about the massive behind-the-scenes that goes on for a show. It reminds me of the few times I’ve been in an opera production. There are so many hours of work and preparation leading up to what’s ultimately just a few hours of performance (of course laid out over several days, usually). Long live the performing arts!

Hey Tank, Sabaton has actually done a song on the Battle of Paschendale. It's one of their older ones, from their old lineup, and is called The Price of a Mile. It is, in my opinion, one of their better songs.

And it wasn't just the scale but the technology that was so brutal. When it started, there was still muskets, horses and cannons. In a few years, heavy artillery, tanks, mustard gas, ambulances, etc. It was the fastest evolution in the perfection of killing and medicine that we've seen to date

For those who do not know: the city of Plzeň is called Pilsen in German. Adjective of Pilsen in German is Pilsner. Yes, *that* Pilsner. Cheers.
BTW, I was really surprised that a bridge gate in a town of Stříbro (Silver) near Plzeň still bears a marking “CLEARANCE 12’ 7” painted above the arch by Patton’s army. It survived 76 years - and Commies.

I've enjoyed this so much, thank you brother! You've really lifted me up with your videos, I've made it in to a routine to grab a drink and watch your Sabaton Saturday every week.
Again, thank you so much for this, I really needed it.

Fully agreed with a lot of stuff you're saying, both in terms of the music (verse hasn't got me hooked, but that chorus is epic) and the history (so many people, from across the world, dying in agony, pain, terror, fear, in some muddy field in Belgium - and that's just one battle, and all the tens of thousands who were never even found again, there's a reason so many countries have a Tomb of the Forgotten Soldier)...
Love you bringing some light to some behind the scenes stuff (as always!), and while I'll miss Sabaton Saturdays, it seems like a real sensible decision to let it be more on your own terms rather than having it be forced by a thing such as what weekday it is.

Joakim plays guitar on “Resist and Bite”. There’s an official live video of it on Nuclear Blast’s UA-cam channel that was shot at Wacken in 2015 and one on Sabaton’s YT channel from the Great Tour that was shot in Antwerp 🇧🇪. Joakim plays two different guitars in those shows though.

Talking about it being removed, i wound up extremely lucky in high school. I wrote a fairly involved essay about ww1, and wound up with a phenomenal source. My history prof was a late in life baby, and she brought me in a shoebox full of letters her dad wrote home when he was part of the AEF force in the last year of the war. It really is awe inspiring to try to wrap your head around the situation that these young men and boys went though.

I've seen Joakim grab a guitar at a show before (Heavy Montreal in 2018). He jokingly played the intro of Smoke on the Water (slowly), claimed he was a great guitarist and the band played one of their older song (I think, memory is getting fuzzy). A nice bit of crowd interaction.

You should take a look at "Price of a mile" and the corresponding Sabaton History. It's about the battle of Passchendale and about how gruesome, awful and absolutely unnecessary it was. It is so sad. I legit started to cry when I watched it. Also, Price of a Mile is one of their most emotional songs, in my opinion.
Great War is a great song, I love it. I love your honest opinions about stuff, so it's fine you don't like the verses as much. They do pull away from the "drive" of the song if that makes sense? I personally find that nice to focus on the lyrics but I get that not everyone likes that. Awesome reaction as always Tank :)
