    Great video on the construction of a Dutch Gable. Thank you, BuildSum! Good call on showing two different methods of joining the shed roof rafters.

    Great video! The Gambrel roof is defined as having two or more roof pitches. The example here appears to have only one as evidenced by the 45-degree angle of the hip rafters and aligning jack rafters.

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  5 років тому +2

      Hi Dori, yes a google search will tell you that a Gambrel roof has 2 or pitches and as you correctly state the one in the video only has one pitch. Different terminology is used in different countries, states and even communities. Hear in NSW, Australia this style of roof is also referred to as a Gambrel Roof or a Dutch Gable.
      Thanks for your comments.

    Bonza video mate. How do you calculate the length of the short rafters once you've got run? Is there a length for rafter spaces and a ratio between common and short rafters? Thanks again.

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  Рік тому +1

      Hi Mate, this video goes over the calculations required
      ua-cam.com/video/TcN3O7owg9I/v-deo.html
      For the short rafters you would just use the plan length of the rafter instead of the 1/2 Span. Hope this helps

    Thank you for a very informative video. I am only a DIYer so please excuse my ignorance, and confirm the following details: The "cropped" hips must be at the same pitch as the main roof?
    The length of these hips are variable as long as they end against a main rafter? If the hip rafters are butted against the waling plate they must be shorter by the thickness of the plate?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  4 роки тому

      Hi mate, thanks for you comment.
      Yes the "cropped hips' must be the same length as the rest of the roof, Yes there lenght will be determined by the position of the first set of rafter and yes if they but into the waling plate they will have to be that much shorter.
      I hope this helps.

    Would this be a good method to add a lean to on to a pole barn. I'm wanting to put the lean too on the gable end. side walls are 11 foot with a 4x12 pitch to the peek. My issue is I would like not to lose the 11 foot height , so essentially I would need to attach above the 11 foot side wall to create a pitch so I don't have a flat roof. thinking a 2x12 pitch would be fine in my area. So my problem becomes I can not run the rafters the full span of the building with out running out the building to maintain the height. So I was thinking this dutch method might work as I don't have to run or attach the rafters all the way out. Hopefully this makes sense. Great Video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

      Hi Jake, yes i think i understand what you mean and that is a great idea. It would certainly look a lot better than a straight lean to and should look like it was always there.

    How on earth do you insulate the gable side of the hip when it's a very short end?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  4 роки тому

      Hi Mate, yeah there is not much room down there. I have seen some people do it before the plasterboard ceiling sheets are installed but chances are it is to late for that. The only other way is to get the smallest mate you know and give him a long stick or pole to poke the batts into position. It is not a nice job but there is not easy way of doing it.

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  4 роки тому

      Hi Mate, I see what you mean now, that beam is going to be a pain. You will have to put the batts in before or as the plasterboard goes up. You may have to hold them up there by stapling some packing tape under the joists to keep them in place while you get the sheets up there.

    Nice tutorial. Though, that is not a gambrel roof. A gambrel roof is somewhat shaped like a half octagon. It is the typical roof that is put onto barns and some small sheds, at least around the US (I'm not quite sure about other parts of the world).

      Buildsum Oh, wow; that's interesting. I didn't know that. Apologies for the misunderstanding. Thanks for clearing that up, though. Any knowledge is useful knowledge at some point or another, right?

    • @teebee5323
      @teebee5323 8 років тому

      Gambrel simply refers to a multi level/pitch roof with different pitches on the second roof level, not the number of "sides", these multi stage roofs are certainly typical of barns in the USA which I believe are based off of "Dutch" architecture.
