We can be sure many who saw this on TV was not an opera fan. MDM is having a JAM! Having fun at it! Letting loose and rocking out. Look he is even wearing a simple sweat shirt not even a tuxedo.
This was FASCINATING! The first time I ever heard a tenor sing an aria for a baritone...he actually sang some notes higher than the baritone G. Very well acted and thought out... What an ending!!
Allegedly Caruso sang Colline's coat aria in a performance of Boheme. The bass suddenly lost his voice and mimed the number, while Caruso, who was playing Rodolfo that night, turned upstage and sang the aria.
I have heard so many Largoes, however, when I listened to Monaco, I felt that when Rossini composed it, he may have had this performance in mind! Stunning!!!!
@bpabustan That's the exact point that I made above. He has a baritonal quality to his voice so why not have fun with it? This is exactly what he was doing. If you haven't seen the entire performance you should. It was filmed in a radio studio in Germany with a huge orchestra with terrible acoustics.
