Solo Bushcraft Shelter Build & Camping in the Cold - Beaver Meat, Bough & Wool Bed, Traditional Gear

- My dog and I head into the bush to build a small bushcraft camp using fully traditional gear.
In this video, Comet and I go on another adventure in the Chilcotin backcountry to build a small camp using traditional gear and tools. I set up alongside a large slough-grass meadow, and did all sorts of interesting tasks, serving as great practice and adding to my knowledge of wilderness living. Shelter building with natural materials, some much needed camp cooking practice using some tender beaver meat, foraging the forest floor for edible and medicinal plants, some good old fire crafting practice, and of course a ton tool work, focusing on improving my technique and familiarity though each task mentioned, and the many more featured in this video.
Special thanks to Jackson for supplying me with the beaver meat. It was by far the most tender and flavorful meat I am yet to have in the bush. Thanks a lot, buddy!
Enjoy the video, everyone!

Enjoy the new video everyone! It was a fun one to film. Don't forget to drop a like and share if you enjoyed, and leave some feedback on what you liked and disliked! It's greatly appreciated.
this was epic Nicholas ! Thanks for sharing and inspiration :)
Hey hab dich jetzt erst entdeckt. Mir gefallen deine Videos. Vorallem das du mit so wenig Sachen klar kommst. Kein Hightech, nur basic zeug. Das du dabei nie was sagst ist irgendwie auch beruhigend :D
I've always liked the fact that you don't talk. Pure ambiance when watching your outdoor videos. I tried making a couple videos on some wilderness canoe trips I made, and it was tedious and annoying. Not for me. I enjoy watching in my downtime at home, but when I am out in the woods I find the whole process of recording video a kick in the nuts. So hats off to you... you put a lot of effort into your shot composition, and it looks great.
Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong generation - I get that feeling watching your videos as well. Great content. Also, loving that trapper nelson!!! Classic at its best.
You were born in the wrong society, read the bible and leave babylon.
Always like him going camping with gun👍👍..safety first!! 👌
Excellent job and quality. Thanks
Thank you!
👍
Oh yeah, the lighter. Us bushcrafters carry 5 ways to make fire but seem to always forget about the lighters we carry. Bravo!
I carry the same amount yet usually resort to a lighter or match 😆 Maybe I’m just lazy!
Lighter or matches must be your number one imo
So nice to see your video of Comet & self again, I do like your four legged friend, he has this silent presence that unless one see's him you would not know if he was there or not. Nice tidy wee shelter - appears to have the comforts that suit you & I do like that. I also enjoyed the video of fixing your tools, so informative to a novice like myself. So travel well & safely.
Unfortunately I won't be bringing her out with me much this year. She's getting pretty old, and after completely abandoning me one night forcing me to go through the bush with a dim headlamp in a country teaming with grizzlies and wolves to find her not knowing if she was even alive, she's became quite a liability. I love to bring her and she usually loves to be out there, but it's no longer safe for either of us. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos on the tools. They weren't the most popular on the channel. Thanks for watching and commenting!
With all the things going on this year, I have not been able to get outdoors like I wanted too.
So thank you my friend for taking me along with you so I too could get my fill. Peace.
Great Job...Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks for your Videos,a Greeting 🎅✌
Thank you for your share this video for us.
for ME a saw is a must !!! keep 1 in the truck also.
real cozy camp. Thanks & Stay Sate. Brian 80
Very Good Place For Camping
Beautiful couple of days out.
Nate
Good to see you again. great camp setup great food . Thanks for sharing your adventure . stay safe .
This video almost has the feeling of a meditative practice; very calming and peaceful. Great to see you. Just what my soul needed today. Thank you.
So geil wollte ich auch schon immer mal in AMerika machen
Wonderful video 😉👍🏻 you really nailed it this time 🔥
I love the old school style and the tranquility in this video. Thanks for sharing your adventure with me 😁
Tom
Great video. You do an excellent job both filming and your woodsman skills.
This section of the forest looks incredible! mostly aspen? Your camp and food looked great too!
It’s one of my favourite areas. It’s along side a slough-grass meadow near a muskeg, and the whole area is lined in balsam poplar (similar to aspens I think). I liked it so much I left my camp there! 😆
Que buen video hermano ssludos desde Monterrey Mexico
That was quite visually stimulating Nicholas. Thanks much. We really need this right now!
👍 👍 👍 Super Video wieder mal und hoffentlich bis bald mal wieder bei mir vorbei 👌 😎 👍 LG mathias und bis bald
Your hat is similar to mine. Broad brimmed felt. As the Aussies call it - a “fan the fire, water the dog hat.”

I was thinking of you yesterday and here you are. Great video as always. Thanks!
Good timing! Thanks for watching :)
Another excellent job, congratulations friend.👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Another fine video brother. Good to see you out in the woods 🙂
Thank you! I was glad to be out filming again. I wish It didn’t take so long to get this video out!
nice to see a new video again. i missed it !
Looked like a nice relaxing overnighter you had with your best friend Comet. I’m sure it was cold even though it looked comfortable during the daytime. Looking forward to seeing the snow. Stay warm and be safe til the next one.
It was almost uncomfortable on each end. Almost 30°C in the day, and around 5°C at night. It gets pretty hard to dress for such a quick temperature change 😆 Thank you for watching! See you in the next one 🤠
Your environment is so nice where your camping, clean & pristine with lots of new shoots & lovely flora/ fauna around - to top it off a beautiful sunny day. love your 4 legged friend he is a delight to look at. Travel well & be safe - Cheers
Hey Nic, awful good to see you and "Buck" ;) again . . . I just noticed your betrothal ring. Congratulations!! There's an old saying, "If mamas not happy ain't nobody happy (hahaha, its wise saying to keep in mind :)) Perfect campsite. This was a real nice couple of days out. Looked like perfect weather and not many bugs bothering.
You take care of yourselves. Hope to see you again soon.
Not like you to leave a good saw behind, love you knife well done young man your getting better every time you go out stay safe . HAPPY TRAILS
Great as always
Hi my friend you are doing such an amazing job. this is fun to watch it, man learned a lot from you, thanks for your amazing documentary cd movien
Very entertaining
Thanks for a good video.
No problem! Thank you for watching and for the questions and feedback! It’s greatly appreciated 🤠👊
A very enjoyable video well put together nice location and setup food looked good I like your style thanks for sharing atvb jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Fantastic footage...love the 'no talking' just submerse yourself. Looked like great back straps! I didn't wanna bethe one to tell you that your Stanfields was on backwards...but...😀
This is a fantastic way to show our ancestry and just how simple yet wonderful life can be.
Is that a custom knife?
Good Job
Thanks!!
Great video...!1!!
Real life old school cowboy
Nice relaxing video. A tip to improve your light, clean the glass and fit half the perimeter with foil to reflect the wasted light. Nothing beats chopsticks for camp cooking.
Very cool 🤠 More please!
There’s more to come! 🤠👍
You do things right.
Very cool camp🔥
As always, thanks for sharing your videos. You said it was fun to shoot. Well I’m telling you it’s fun to watch!
Hope you are staying well and safe in these challenging times.
Be well and stay safe, from here in the Allegheny National Forest in Northwestern Pennsylvania.
is cool!
Thanks!
Great trip. Keep 'em coming. Ths!
Muy buenos videos!!!!Saludos desde Uruguay.
Hello. More and more interesting movies. Great shots of the fire. A great place to live in the wild. The dog is always on guard, you just didn't let him eat, hahaha I think when you slept he was nearby. Just envy such expeditions in the Canadian bush. Thank you very much for great films and we are always looking forward to the next ones. Greetings and a great long weekend of Remembrance Day.
Love this x
Awesome video, very relaxing.
Never had beaver. Maybe one day i can try some.
It's my favorite game meat I've cooked up in the bush so far, but just be careful of the castor sacks when skinning and quartering. It can make the meat taste awful if nicked. I stuck to just eating the back straps for that reason 👍
@@wituikbws wow i did not expect that it was a favorate. Thats suprising.
I'm yet to cook moose or venison out there, but so far out of Canadian geese, snowshoe hare, grouse, and black bear it's my favourite. I'm sure once I have a nicely seared venison steak, my mind will change 😆
@@wituikbws i really want to try "ribeye of the sky" the sandhill crane. It literally liiks like ribeye steak. Looks amazing.
I just looked that up. That looks crazy good! Time to go to Texas
I like your method for making shavings to start fire. I was never a real big fan of the text book feather stick.
I’m not either. I find them fun sometimes but it’s a lot quicker to just make shavings and put them in a pile
thanks for sharing this quality content. do you use a 50 mm lens?
Thanks for watching, and yes I do!
That log picks up the scent of the raw meat laid upon it. Calls in critters.

Hello sir Iam Niklas from Sweden Ho var you I like wery much to you Cd movien Dokumentar En you beautiful dog
Hi Niklas! I hope you’ve been well. It’s always great to see a comment from you 🤠👍
Left your saw blade at the end
Great video loved the natural cutting board nature has ever thing we need if you just know where to look thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved your video! the images are beautiful, and i'm curious... how long is your knife? especially the blade part?( just a knife lover :)
💖💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Fantastic video bro, I really like the traditional cowboy style. How did you keep the snakes away?
Thank you!! Just wait tell we get the horses in a video! 🤠👊 I live in central BC in the Chilcotin area. All we have here are grizzlies and moose, no snakes (thankfully)
Great videos so far! Good color tones and camera angles. And less talking, is more to me. Question: Where did you get that hip flask?
Amazing video. So silent, yet engaging while peaceful. I will stay tuned for more.
It there a list/video of your traditional gear? I have never seen that kind of canteen and need to know :)
Exactly, an aluminum cutting board. Why not? I'm good with that.
Looking back I should’ve just made the log cutting board before I started the vegetables, but I guess I hadn’t planned that far ahead. It didn’t seem to dull the knife at all though
@@wituikbws softer than steel so no problem 😀👍
Enjoyed the video. Where did you get your hat?
It’s a Smithbilt “Bullrider” in pecan colour. This is what it ended up looking like after 2 years of heavy use, and I’ve since custom shaped it to fix it up in my latest videos 👍
Less is more. :)
Great outing.
Did you put your dog on a lease this time so he wouldn't wonder off? lol
Thanks for the video
As I’ve watched you arrange stones in your fire circle, I wonder why you don’t put low stones in the front, towards the shelter. And taller stones - especially ones with a flat side - in the back. It could reflect some more heat to you. Just a thought.

I enjoy your videos there are great! Was wondering what make of knife you have there it is a great looking blade?
It's a blade I designed and had built by Mike Jones Knife & Tool! He still makes them, shoot him a message
@@wituikbws thanks for the information! I will look at it.
Whats that lovely knife ?
What make are those canteens you use ?
I've been thinking about taking along a carbon steel WOK for cooking in the bush. What do you think?
I’d imagine it’d work great! It’s probably a lot lighter than cast iron like you had mentioned
What is your dogs breed and my husband would like to know what caliber your rifle is? Another great video
The dog is a labradoodle named Comet, and the rifle is chambered in .45-70 Govt. to handle the grizzly bears if I ever needed it to. Thanks for the comment :)
@@wituikbws My husband had an original Springfield .45-70 govt.
and we enjoy your videos
Awesome what jeans and boots are those youre wearing?
I think the pants were Carhartt straight fit double front work pants, and the boots are L.L. Bean hunting boots
@@wituikbws awesome thanks alot
What is the Axe & Bowie knife that you are using sir ?... Brands if you don't mind me asking
The axes I use are all old Walters Co. heads, they're not made anymore, and the knife is a custom design I came up with and had made by Mike Jones knife & Tool
Heheh, pinus.
What brand and style hat are you wearing?
What the knife u have. Shout out from Nova Scotia Canada
It's a design I came up with and was brought to life my Mike Jones Knife & Tool out of Quesnel, BC. Can't get a better knife than what leaves his shop in my opinion!
So I'm guessing that you used some type of jam knot to tie the two vertical poles that held the windscreen together?
Just a good old Canadian jam knot, some of them with a quick release 👍
Awesome 👍
did you make the trapper nelson pack or did you buy it?
I bought this one awhile back. It’s a Jones Tent no. 2 I believe. I recently restored it - patched the holes, fixed up the frame, re-tinned the pack, added new straps, etc. Turned out pretty good 👍
Where'd you find that gum blanket? I can't find them anywhere.
I got mine from Blockade Runner, www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg28.htm
They're very easy to make if you have the time. Canvas dropcloth of any size (10oz weight or heavier) with some liquid rubber painted on will achieve the same thing, and it's cheaper too. Going to make a few for my saddle sometime soon. Thanks for watching!
You might have a video about this but what kind of pack do you use?
Yo - wituik. Where is your purty woman? I miss her.
hi what kind of tarp is that you used for your shelter??
This was what is called a “gum blanket”. They’re from the civil war time period and are great for use in the bush
Do you have any experience with a Buck Bowie knife? Noticed your knife is on the larger side. I picked up a 110 awhile back and it’s done me well so far. What’s your take on a .22LR for survival scenarios? Sorry for the run on, I enjoy the videos a lot on my days off, thank you.
I do! The Buck 119 is one of the first knives I used. I don't have it anymore unfortunately, but it was a nice knife. I've used long knives my whole life and cant stand any with a shorter blade than 5 inches unless it's a skinning knife. If I had a choice on what rifle to carry for survival, it'd be a .22/20 gauge over under
@@wituikbws that gun is pretty sweet, too bad I have them separately. Have you seen the new Buck Bowie knife? Awfully expensive to me.
Don't bears or mountain lions get close to camp?
Are your videos on public or private land?
How did you learn this stuff? Trying to learn online and do it myself. Not going so well.
Trial and error. It took me years of unnecessary risks and messing around to get to the point I’m at, and if I could redo it differently, I would. If you have access to a bushcraft class like Dave Canterbury from Self Reliance Outfitters offers, that may be a better option. If not, Far North Bushcraft and Survival is my favourite channel for learning. Hope that helps!
I mean, I love cast iron, but a little heavy for the pack. It's ok, though.
I really enjoyed the video but Why did you not leave that steak on that paper and cut it up instead of laying it on the wood
No clue 😆
Can you tell me the knife brand and where can I get it
The knife was designed by myself and built by Mike Jones Knife and Tool out of Quesnel, British Columbia. It’s a one of a kind piece, but he has lots of other knives that are just as great!
Where are you located?
British Columbia, Canada
Where did you get the canteen and cup?
Surplus Swiss Army canteen, this one is 1934 I think. I found mine on Ebay
Knife?
Custom knife I designed and had built by Mike Jones Knife & Tool out of Quesnel, BC. It's a one of a kind knife, but he has lots of other great blades with the same level of quality and craftsmanship. Check him out and tell him I sent you!
@@wituikbws it looks amazing super simplistic but the perfect shape. And the stag handle is very cool. Another thing I have a question about is what is the wall you put up in front of the fire is that so wind isn’t blowing embers around camp or does it serve another purpose?
30-30 Win? . is it a 94 Model?
1886 in .45-70 Govt.
@@wituikbws Wow .. ok .... cool. Big Bang.
Beaver meat looks kind of like beef from here
Do you find tic's a problem on the ground. Maybe tic's don't like pine bow's. Don't know. Freaking hate them little buggers.
Thankfully I’m so far north that there are none, but if I wasn’t, I’m sure they’d drive me insane. Muskol must be your best friend for tics like it is mine for mosquitoes and black flies 😆
Hmm, muskol. I'll have to try some.
After I saw you lay your rife on the ground instead of leaning it against the rock...well that was enough for me...I'd never lay my rife on the ground,,,Just my opinion
All I worry about is rust, and that goes for all my tools. A few knicks and scratches wont be any harm, just adds character 😁 Appreciate your opinion/feedback, hope you give my stuff another chance !
@@wituikbws i understand about character,Im just worried about ground moister getting into the action and I will finish watching,I'm always up for learning new things...
