very cute, i suggest to make the snake move its body only from the neck down, if you see snakes they lift their head up and let the body do the movement while their head stay straight
Love the username haha! I've actually begun working on a way to steer animal companions which I'm finding super fun atm, so I think the next Devlog will probably cover that!
Suggestion: Make the snake coil up when not moving; Add a Penguin; Mabey make lizard travel the world and experience different climates Name: George for the sea turtle
Ooh actually that's pretty close to the story I have in mind for the game XD Though it's admittedly on a smaller scale, don't want to spend years on this lol. George fits really well! I'll keep it in mind
Wow good point! Taking inspiration from real life lizard colors could work super well. I'm also planning some amount of clothing options which I'm excited to design!
I have had lots of success with looking at what surface the player has contact with, and getting their velocity. Then add a contract with friction and velocity that matches the moving surface.
Awesome video! The game is looking really good. Also really like the story idea of the game. Making moveable platforms are really difficult as you have to move the player as well but you seem to get that done smoothly. Also the companion models looks really kool especially the snake's movement. Just wishlisted your game. Looking forward to your next devlog. Keep it up! :)
I like the idea of making companions in place of unlocking abilities ala metroidvania, and gaining access to more areas as you unlock them. Here's some ideas: Turtle - riding the turtle can help the lizard cross some dangerous terrain. The turtle is protected by its shell, and can cross terrain that damages the lizard. Armadillo - rolls up into a ball. Travels fast, hard to control, but smashes through obstacles, like smashable rocks that block the way Flying lizard - glides across terrain, helping cross bottomless pits or between two elevated points Jumping Viper - jumps good, helps reach higher places (or maybe serves a kind of spring pad, launching the lizard into the air)
cool game! I suggest adding a frillneck feature to the lizard, which could be used as a means of getting other animals to cooperate through fear rather than compassion. Or if another animal trying to eat the lizard, you could scare it away by showing the frill. just a suggestion tho. Another suggestion is to maybe add ectothermic requirements. Perhaps spending too much time in a cool environment such as in the shade could kill the lizard. just a suggestion tho. Cool game!
I think the sea turtle could be named Logger, since a real world animal is a Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Also, the tortoise should be able move on something like rough terrain, which the others have trouble crossing at their normal speed.
Make the Oasis area a hub in which there will be more reptiles, also add something like the bonefire lady from soul game but he is a female lizard 🦎, btw dinosaur is also an reptile
Oh yeah wow that could be such a fun dynamic to explore in the narrative. Though I definitely have to improve my dialogue writing skills before I can tackle that lmao
But what's the obstacle to overcome to be able to see the sunset? Do you need to find and eat bugs? Do you need to survive against a hazard or predators? Maybe what's missing is not a final goal but a clear problem for the player to resolve.
Maybe name the Cobra Thorn and the Tortoise Hernald, and make a new friend that is a Gecko, Gecko's are a lot like Lizards, I think they'll get along, and maybe name the Gecko Speckle (I'm not really good at names.)

Add the ability to L I C K. Not for anything specific, but I wanna see it do a lil' lick like those videos with lizards licking oranges. Also clothing suggestion: sombrero.
Well, if you're working in a game engine, parenting can absolutely work, but I'm generally against it as a solution for commercial games. Dynamically changing parents can very easily lead to unexpected behavior when you have a ton of different platforms/platform types, and it can be hard to track down what the problem is. Also, under the hood, parenting is sort of just doing the direct movement approach, applying all the translations and rotations that the parent has. TLDR: I don't like it for bigger game projects, but it's totally a valid solution!
Its actually super simple! I'm not sure how to implement it in Unreal Engine, but all you have to do is render the camera output to a low resolution texture, then render that texture to the screen somehow. Look up "Unreal Engine pixelation filter" and I'm sure you'll find something!
IMO, story is *not* important to a game. What is important, is that it's fun to play. Games like chess, football, poker, tag, beer pong, etc; don't have a story. They are purely gameplay. Story is simply not needed to make a game. and Story is actively detrimental to making a game re-playable. What makes a game fun to play is subjective. For myself, I like a game that allows me to make choices, and have control over those choices. *Even if they're bad choices.* In chess, I can choose to sacrifice my queen. in football, I can choose to allow the ball to go out of bounds. In poker, I can fold a royal flush. In beer pong, I can choose to miss. When games start to focus on story over gameplay, they will inevitably lock gameplay behind story progression. At this point, I'd rather read a book than bother with a game that restricts my gameplay. TL;DR: Games don't need story. Games need to be fun.
That's a perfectly valid opinion! I think there's absolutely room for both types of games: those completely devoid of story & those that focus on it more. For this game, I definitely have a story in mind, but that story is more to give structure to the experience than to limit your choices: as a matter of fact, I really hope to make this game as open as possible. I think when used correctly, a story can just bring an experience together like nothing else. Rest assured this doesn't mean I won't focus on gameplay/fun though!

Being able to steer the animals by moving side to side on their backs would make for some cool challenges or puzzles
Love the username haha!

Thanks looking forward to seeing that!

this is the first time i have ever instantly wishlisted a game from a devlog upon seeing the first 10 seconds
WOW! that's super high, praise, thank you so much!
Add hidden skins on the map, theres so many colorful different lizards and it would be cool to have them in the game
Wow good point! Taking inspiration from real life lizard colors could work super well. I'm also planning some amount of clothing options which I'm excited to design!
I have had lots of success with looking at what surface the player has contact with, and getting their velocity. Then add a contract with friction and velocity that matches the moving surface.
looks very cool.
you should add the ability for the lizard to grab thing with his mouth. like a key item
Ooh that could be really nice! A more visual sort of "inventory slot"
Great video! Can't wait to see where you're going with the game!
Thank you so much!

Glad to hear you picked up on the metroidvania inspiration! These are some sick ideas!
Love the editing in the video!
Thank you very much!
Hey Niv, awesome looking game. I love the turtles
Hey Mickey! Thanks a lot I really appreciate that
Yoo under 1k views ❤
Seems like a cute game! Nice work!

Nothing feels as good as watching a video from my favorite orange juice
Hello! Love your videos
Hello! Thank you very much I really appreciate that!
I think the sea turtle could be named Logger, since a real world animal is a Loggerhead Sea Turtle,
Also, the tortoise should be able move on something like rough terrain, which the others have trouble crossing at their normal speed.
Still the lizard being able to walk sideways looks pretty cursed. I hope the lizard’s body can also curl.
I would recommend ether making the stake slightly longer or making it more skinny
Unless it clashes with the story of the game (which it probably does based on what ive seen), WAR TORTOISE (mountable guns for your mounts)
LMFAO
I love this
Probably does clash with my story idea but who knows maybe I can find room for it as a skin or something haha
add beans
Make the Oasis area a hub in which there will be more reptiles, also add something like the bonefire lady from soul game but he is a female lizard 🦎, btw dinosaur is also an reptile
Yep planning on having a ton of different reptilian NPCs! A dinosaur would be incredibly cool 👀
Dude I love hero + sidekick games. Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank. A lizard + turtle is a great combination!
Oh yeah wow that could be such a fun dynamic to explore in the narrative. Though I definitely have to improve my dialogue writing skills before I can tackle that lmao

Feature idea: would be cool to be able to talk to the companions. Not sure if you already had this though bc you mentioned you wrote a story
That's actually the next devlog XD
Been working on a dialogue system
cool graphics, chill stuff. What about an iguana that can yeet the lizard with its tail?
Yeah I'm def planning on adding an iguana!
couldnt he just wait 24 hours and boom?
how about instead of a game about seeing a sunset, it's about seeing the "best" sunset?
crocodile game?

@@nivmiz0hiya, I’ll message tomorrow as I’m away to sleep rn, but I’m excited to talk and see what we can do!
Flying.
On a pterodactyl companion maybe? 👀
@@nivmiz0 I thought of being able to glide, but that is a better idea for sure.
I love it but I think the turning of the lizard looks a bit out of place

LOL like the honk in untitled goose game, I love it
Isn't the default way to make moving platforms work nowadays to just have the character parented to whatever object they are standing on?
Well, if you're working in a game engine, parenting can absolutely work, but I'm generally against it as a solution for commercial games. Dynamically changing parents can very easily lead to unexpected behavior when you have a ton of different platforms/platform types, and it can be hard to track down what the problem is.

@@weckarah no, I meant I'm against parenting to the moving platform as a solution for commercial games
What is your shader that make visual like this ?
It's available on Unreal Engine ?
