We are a homeschool family with special needs children. While there are times it doesn’t feel easier, logically I know it is in terms of things like scheduling therapy appointments for those who need it and getting time together. Many of our lessons are awesome conversations that I don’t think we would have otherwise.

We are homeschooling our 2 kids. Best choice we ever made!

I am a 70 year old Mother and Grandma. If my kids were growing up in this culture, I would definitely be homeschooling my children. By the grace of God, my kids were able to go to a good Catholic school.

Homeschooling can only be as beautiful as the parents are capable. My father made the mistake of trusting my mother with our education. She was too volatile and emotionally immature to handle it, and my sister and I ended up neglected and emotionally/verbally abused. But she told my father that we were obstinate and disobedient, so he believed her over us. He almost never saw that side of her, so he couldn't have known. Are you willing to take the risk that you know your partner well enough?

I’m genuinely sorry that happened to you. But I also think your experience speaks to the problem of modern family structures where two people are on an island, one goes to work and the other is isolated with children. The “1950s” model of family life isn’t traditional, it’s modern. Having aunties, older cousins, and grandparents in the home is so important and (can) help mitigate those negative experiences. Humans need to live closely with one another for accountability, but this “single family home” model doesn’t foster that. My husband and I are both very hands-on with our home life, but I still feel like we need extended family in close quarters in order to make it work.

Amen the nuclear family model is unnatural and a modern / ist idea. Humans didn't live like that for much of the past, it used to be mom dad and kids surrounded by extended family and friendly neighbors

Lol I'm not really a huge fan of Brian but i'm glad he offered some gentle pushback. OF COURSE Matt Fradd's life is easier with homeschooling - if he's the one who has to work every day in what sense does his life and routine even meaningfully change ? He doesn't have to worry about packing lunches because Cameron's at home to just make them lunches.
It's his wife that has to do the work and make the sacrifices - not him

My husband works 50 hours a week and travels often, but he still cooks and does the dishes every day that he’s home. Plus he does a lot of math with our kids in the evening. I do the bulk, that’s for sure. But my point is that I don’t think we know how much Matt is or is not doing, down to every hour of the day. Homeschooling is hard, but I think Matt’s point is that it becomes easier because you get to choose more of your own schedule based on your family’s needs/ habits.

How do you afford to homeschool when most households need 2 incomes? My income unfortunately won’t get the job done alone right now.

I can’t give a hard answer because I only know what the Lord has done in my life and those around me. Your situation will be very different I’m sure but I’ll tell a story. A friend of mine is about 26, married with two kids, had to suffer with parents disapproving of his decision, didn’t get their support, had to live in a crappy little apartment then moved up. He did the whole thing on just his income starting at a tire disturbing company as a grunt worker and working his way up. his wife stayed home with the children through it all. The question might just be “What’re you willing to live with.” I’m not saying this is your situation, but maybe for the many others reading this, take in that 30k in earnings puts you in the top 1% globally. The settlers of North America living 200 years ago had a tiny living space, hand washed laundry, never ate at a restaurant, grew what food they could, etc, and 99% of people in the world do the same today. We’re so blessed that we can live even a lick above that status. My philosophy, is be thankful for what you have and be willing to meet somewhere in between pioneer status and modern luxury and the affordability skyrockets. Does that help?

I've come across this question a few times and I have a couple things to say. As a precursor, I know for sure homeschooling is just not an option for people and I'm understanding of that.
      1. Many states have programs that will pay you for any expenses incurred from homeschooling. In my state currently they will pay for all supplies related to homeschooling and even pay for extracurricular activities. Some states take an oppressive role here and require a strict state sanctioned curriculum in order to give you funds but many do not.
      2. Any money my wife could earn at a job of her own, seeing as she does not have a college degree, would not cover the costs associated with daycare and any extracurricular activities our children might want to pursue. So in this case, her being the homeschooling parent would be more fruitful as she would get to spend the time that she would be working for minimum wage instead with our children and developing their knowledge.
      3. For many people it's a Sophie's choice. Fingers crossed with public school that your children don't get indoctrinated and you can shepherd them to the Lord with church and close family connections at home OR find a way to move to a state/country where cost of living is lower and/or where there are the benefits I described in my first point. My family moved by choice specifically for this purpose.
      4. There are hybrid learning programs in which your children attend school for less time per week (2-3 days) and the parents can homeschool in connection with the learning centers they attend.
All in all, We find it very beneficial to raise our children this way but we are sympathetic to those who just simply cannot afford to do so. The government may even make it harder to do so; there is a growing push to outright ban homeschooling because some government officials feel that parents aren't teaching children the right political views. I pray for us and others in this regard.

The implication that those who don’t home school can’t inculcate virtue into their children is rather arrogant

  • @DJItchyBoo

It being simpler & a preferable lifestyle if you’re lazy is no argument for home schooling.

Catholic schools were already bad in the 1970s and 1980s. Sooo sad. Praying homeschooling and conscious choices about the faith will help rebuild Christendom and right soon.
