That is why there are and always will be premium products. Including guitars
I have 11 Teles...including a '63 CS...and everything down to a Harley Benton HB62. All my Tele's now have 'boutique' pups....LSL, Lollar, Fralin, Suhr, NoCaster....but even with quality pups...the CS has the superior sound/tone...almost magical. My MIM Tele has McNelly...excellent tone/playability. Bottom Line: A Squier CV50 with Lollars is 98% the tone/playability found in a CS.....but, I wanted that extra 2%....and if you ask me...I"m worth it. Great vid...great playing!!
If it's a main/keeper guitar, feel is way more important to me than hardware. That's why I ended up selling my Classic Vibe Tele after 7 years and picked up an Am Pro II Tele - I preferred the feel of the neck. As far as the lacquered fretboard feel on the Player II, that's a big reason I prefer rosewood fretboards. Some people say they never touch the fretboard, but I definitely do. Some say the rosewood affects the tone. Maybe a little, but the feel counts more and I like the sound of my rosewood fretboard Tele. All that said, I couldn't drop $4k on a guitar. So I'd get the player with a rosewood fretboard and work it in. Good video and great playing as always👍
What's interesting is how you love the rolled edges on your custom shop more, and the comparison of the general feel, while the rolled edges on the player II neck are exactly why I love it. Granted, all my guitars are sub $1000 guitars. I have the same Player II tele (Tele Twins!) and a Player I tele in White w/ Pau Ferro. The feel between the two was massively different for me. I don't seem to have the same problems with the lacquer on my particular neck. As a lefty, I know you understand the hardships of having variety to choose from, and all my previous guitars have been second hand guitars with the exception of my Player I tele. I have a Standard MIM Strat and a Player Strat (Tidepool w/ separate Pau Ferro neck) I pieced together from parts. Hope to get ahold of a separate Player II rosewood neck to put on my Player I tele, and potentially the same for the Strats as well as the Player II necks by far is the best feeling neck I've had on any of my Fenders.
Appreciate that you’re willing to give these “budget” Fenders their flowers, relative to their CS counterparts. Too many people speak of their CS’s, as if they’re up there with like Vince Gill’s black guard Tele. They’re better guitars, but it’s hard to quantify them being 5x better. I’m one of those people that believes in finding inspiration and joy from playing whatever you have and can afford. You don’t NEED a CS, in order to make killer music. Hell, Chris Buck currently tours with a Squier in his quiver
@@bysykler4959 that was my point exactly. All my guitars are either custom shop or even master built. But I’m not trying to sell you the idea you have to have that. The player series is a fine guitar that I could easily get a good sound with. 🤘🏻
One of his previous videos inspired me to get a "Partscaster". I bought a custom-made telecaster, with an Okoume body and Wenge neck. I am having the Sweetwater custom shop put in some Bare Knuckle pickups and do some work to even out the frets and action. It will be set up for B, A, D, G, B, E (the "Soundgarden Rusty Cage" tuning).
On a blind test, I can’t really tell the differences in the mix. Some sick playing - love it. I never wanted a Tele… I now have 4! But I bet they feel very different to play. Great video.
Playing for decades....never bonded with single coil guitars...til recently my tastes changed to more blues/jazz/Mayer....now have 4 Strats and 11 Teles....play my Tele's mostly. Teles RULE.
My first e-guitar, a Chinese affinity Squier strat, is the only guitar, I bought new for little money in the early 90-ies. Her neck is not lacquered and rather slim. For a long time she was my only guitar for many reasons. I had to work, save money for my own flat, had to raise a child, so I had not much time to play guitar. Now I am retired, our child is independent and I had the chance to buy some more guitars, all second hand. One of these is a Fender USA standard strat with a very different neck (thicker and lacquered). The Squier is slightly modded (HSS and a bone nut) the Fender is stock. The Fender is better quality, better PU, etc., but I prefer the neck of my Squier and I think that's due to the slimmer neck and maybe most important: I've got used to this neck much more as I have her for so many years. I am just a bedroom player and I have a few other hobbies, so I don't spend many hours playing guitar. I've read that Steve Morse uses only one guitar, rather one and the same model. Maybe this is the way to go, especially for people like me. When I am changing from one guitar to another I always need some time to get used to a different neck. This problem doesn't occur playing the Squier, Gibson LP tribute and the Yamaha 612, which all do have a rather slim neck. Btw, my fingers are not very long.
Dude! That “so here’s a clean tone with the custom shop” - bit around 2:30 on its own was enough reason to watch the video. Gorgeous tasty playing. Couldn’t care less which Tele you used for it. Damn you 😀
Thx my man. Will keep on learning. Taking lessons again. Might check out your course. But hearing you play is always an inspiration to pick up the guitar and find something nice to play 😀 keep up your work man 😉
Big surprise, I'm not in NEED of a Tele -- I have a Strat that I really love. But yeah, I've been wanting one for a while, and I'm going to really consider the Player II after seeing your vid!
You are right, I got some cheap guitars that I liked, they were already resonant but I rolled off the edges of the fretboard, sanded down the back of the neck to have bare wood, and rubbed some good oil and the neck feels better than some of my more expensive guitars, put some good Pickups, a good setup ...and that's it.. I hate those lacquer on the fender necks
fun fact: I am the happy owner of a Chinese 80! Dollar tele-shaped object and it's better than the Player I tried in every way. I will probably not become a Fender customer very soon, if that's all they got. and a 4000 Dollar guitar may be better, but it's not for me. I think nowadays it doesn't matter where the CNC is located, but if the guy at the end of the factory doesn't take the quality control serious, that's where you, as a customer, feel it. In my case, the guy did a great job. no fretwork to do. perfect intonation out of the box. The big brands seem not to be able to hire such guys xD
those fingers of yours makes a cheap guitar sound amazing. personally, i feel the $4k guitar is a studio and the player series a gig guitar in a rough pub. other than the cool look of the old tele, the audience isn't going to tell the difference in tone.
In my opinion you can buy a guitar like the player ll, roll the frets even more and clean the frets and pretty much have a guitar that rivals a custom shop guitar 4x the price. Thanks for sharing Joey!
Player II sounds better in the mix for sure. Much clearer too. But I have never seen a Player series with good neck and decent fretjob so far sadly. Maybe the Player II is different though.
Any more, the only substantial difference between custom shop and production are the details in the feel and tuning stability. That gap is more narrow than ever before! Sound wise, the difference can be pretty negligible on a recording.
Hi, I have a Vintera II (Nocaster) and love the guitar - it’s a good way to have a somehow vintage guitar accessible for my money. I also bought today a Telecaster player II with rosewood and sounds amazing. I can’t compare them, because they have different necks ( Modern C-Shape vs U Shape), different pickups, different neck radius (7.25 vs 9.5). In my opinion both serve the propose of the Telecaster Sound but have different vibes indeed. I might buy in the future the AVII or try to get the American Original (if you find one get it) Cheers
Great articulation of the differences. And great playing! Any idea how much extra it would cost to switch the hardware out to the same as on your custom tele? Also, can the lacquer on the neck (not on the frets) be worn down by some method to reduce the “stickiness” without degrading the integrity of the neck?
Probably around $250 to switch everything. To get the lacquer off the fretboard, I don’t know what needs to be done. Sounds like you could mess it up easily.
Hi Joey - what is the signal chain / rig used to get the teles to sound awesome ? : ) I'm at about 4 minutes in the video, so if you mention in the next few minutes, no need to answer. thanks. I enjoy all of your videos....
Paying 4000€ for a telecaster (2 single coils) or any guitar is to me way too much. I have a very easy way of thinking as a player. I won’t buy any guitar that cost a Price of a new motorbike or a used car. It’s pointless and useless. #lifephilosophy
So take $5 buy some sand paper and roll the fret board edges to taste and some steel wool and shine the frets taking off any lacquer on said frets. There I've saved you about $3200.
Good video! This is why I do a thorough setup (intonation, neck adjustment) & fret polish with every new guitar I get. Some need it more than others, but it always makes a difference! 😃👍
We can see your settings changing on your screen when you swap guitars. So useless i guess. Also, i'll say same mic, same settings = same sound. No matter the age of the guitar, kind of wood and other shi 😮💨
I think 99% of guitarists can play at their full potential on max $800 guitars, such as the Player Tele.
