Will Trump Invade Mexico?

  • In December 2024, President-elect Donald Trump reignited controversy by proposing bold measures to combat Mexico's powerful drug cartels, including designating them as terrorist organisations. This move, which would place groups like the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation Cartels on the same footing as ISIS, could open the door to drastic actions, such as military interventions, asset seizures, and expanded prosecutions. However, the idea has drawn sharp criticism from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has rejected U.S. military action as violating Mexico’s sovereignty, advocating for cooperation over conflict.
The stakes are high. With over 100,000 drug-related deaths annually in the US, primarily driven by fentanyl smuggled from Mexico, and the cartels' influence extending into human trafficking and violent crime, the crisis demands attention. Yet, critics argue that military intervention could backfire, straining U.S.-Mexico relations, escalating violence, and violating international law. In this video, we explore the historical roots of the U.S.-Mexico drug crisis, the cartels’ rise to power, and the potential consequences of Trump’s aggressive strategy. Will his administration take unprecedented steps to combat this growing crisis? And at what cost?

So, I've been covering Trump's recent comments against various countries these past few weeks. However, while the claims against Panama and Greenland seem outlandish, his comments about Mexico are more serious, and should be regarded more seriously. The US is facing a significant drug crisis led by the extraordinarily well-armed and well-organised Mexican drug cartels. This raises very significant questions about the concept of self-defence in international relations. So, do you think he will go through with his threats? And should he? As ever, let me know in the comments below.

Respectfully, I still think it is a mistake to take his public comments seriously. Pardon the vulgar Americanism here, but Trump is an "attention wh*re."
Watch what his cabinet does in office. That's where the sausage is made anyways.
We can be certain that Trump wants to do lots of things of the variety that autocratic leaders usually like. But there's no lust in the American public to get engaged in the world using the military. He would need to manufacture a crisis to change that.
It is easy to forget that the natural tendency of American culture has always been isolationist, despite getting pulled into global affairs by others, by historical accident or by geopolitical necessity. I always like to say to those who accuse the post-WWII USA of being an imperialist power, "if the USA is an 'empire', it is the most reluctant empire in a millennium."
... That said, the diplomatic ramifications of his statements are significant and I agree with your statements along these lines

The US should absolutely get involved militarily, Mexico has failed repeatedly to address the issue in 'cooperation' so enough.

I think there are two main problems with the idea of using military force to solve the problem.
    1) Mexico already tried to do that in the past. Contrary to popular belief, they were relatively successful. Out of around 25 or so cartel bosses, they were able to capture around 20. However, the cartels just molded to fit the new dynamic, and violence in mexico only increased.
    2) Even if they reduce the amount flowing through Mexico, the drugs would just come from somewhere else. That's what happened in Colombia and the Caribbean.
The core problem is that as long as there is a drug market in the US, someone will always try to fill it. It's a domestic issues not an international.

that is the problem. When they get the big fish, lot of smaller fishes start to fight just to get on top. Instead of decreasing, violence increases. It never ends. Ecuador used to be a peaceful country now it has the worse violence outside of Haiti. Keep in mind, that most of these guns are coming from the US. They are better equipped than most police departments in LATAM.

An invasion of Mexico would only radicalize the greater Mexican population and diaspora. There are 40 million Mexicans in the US -- many of them in all branches of the US military. Is the US completely confident that all these people would be loyal to the US in such an invasion?
After all, it only took 19 people to carry out the 9/11 attacks -- and Al-Qaeda didn't have sympathizers already working in the Pentagon.
I seriously fear what the unintended consequences of an American attack on Mexico would be.

I have *Mexican American* friends, have known them for decades, they tend to call themselves *Chicano* (male Mexican American) or *Chicana* , they're American, I'm not directly speaking for them as I'm not Mexican, but here's my thoughts on the matter: I feel like the Chicanos and *Tejanos* (Texans of Mexican descent) throughout the Southwest of the US, who have close ties to Mexico, have family on the other side of the border may likely be furious, will be protesting, but then again, there's a good number of Mexican Americans in the US, who are pretty staunch Republicans and Conservatives, I seen a good number of them, so for those Mexican Americans, they probably won't care too much about a US military invasion into Mexico.
But then again, would Trump order a full-blown invasion into Mexico, or just US Special Forces deployed? A full ground invasion from all US border states into Mexico, I could see would make Mexican Americans across the Southwest of the US, and Mexican nationals potentially very furious.
Also, elsewhere I read comments from Mexican nationals and Chicanos, and it seems like they were joking around with *MAMA - Make America Mexican (or Mexico) Again* 😂 I actually read that abbreviation from Mexican nationals. They were talking about taking back Texas should Trump invade. All those Tejanos in Texas? Would they side with the Union or side with Mexico? I read a comment from a Texan, he said "I welcome this." I'm not certain.
I also read a comment about *MAGMA* as well - *Make America Greater Mexico Again*
Anyhow, I think plenty of Mexican Americans and Tejanos may feel conflicted, especially if there's a lot of Mexican civilian causalities in Mexico from US personnel: from drone strikes, aircraft strikes, hit from stray bullets, etc., it could potentially turn Mexican Americans against the US, against Trump, should say, a full-blown US military invasion into Mexico occur.
So, according to the comments I read elsewhere, I see a bit Mexican Americans here and there siding with Mexico. Hypothetically if every Chicano in the US backlashed against Trump, what would Trump do? Would he put nearly 40 million Mexican Americans in the Southwest in internment camps like Japanese Americans in WW2? Label Mexican Americans an enemy of the US, fears of sabotage like the Japanese Americans? There would be severe backlash, and other ethnic Latinos may side with the Mexican nationals and Chicanos, so instead of some 40 million Chicanos, it'll possibly be another 1-10 million angry Latinos, and the Southwest of the US may get heated. The Cubans in Florida? Not sure, don't think so.
If anything, US Special Forces working with the Mexican Armed Forces, along with US intelligence, perhaps sophisticated US drones like the Predator might be better fighting against the cartels of Mexico, because a heavy US military invasion into Mexico, with who knows maybe tens of thousands of US personnel sounds pretty hardcore.
      Time will tell.

Cartels are a product of American consumption, not American consumption a product of cartels. In the sixties, turkish drugs arrived from Europe. They were later brought from Vietnam on the United States Army's own planes. If they cannot control smuggling on their own planes, it will be difficult for them to do so in another territory. Then it came from Colombia through the Caribbean Sea. When the United States Navy stopped traffic through the Caribbean Sea, it began to cross the Mexican Republic and that is where the history of the cartels began. Any street drug dealer knows that when there are drug seizures the price increases on the streets. The problem with fentanyl actually begins when the FDA authorizes strong opioids for common ailments, and this was done due to pressure from pharmaceutical companies. On the other hand, a guy betwen 18 to 21 cannot buy beer in the United States but can buy a high-powered rifle. To have access to opioids a minor only has to open the family medicine cabinet. All the weapons that the Mexican cartels have come from the United States, they are not Russian, they are not Chinese, they are not from India, they are not European, they are from the United States of America. The solution to the drug problem has always been within American territory. Why don't you want to solve this? What young man in his right mind is going to go fight these absurd wars organized by the American elite to continue doing their shady business? The solution is to reinforce family values, and raise awareness among young people about the harm of drugs. The government is not going to do this. There are many interests in drug consumption.

born and raised Mexican here I will say something that might be overlooked or not known by Europeans or gringos:
    1. Cartels are literal organizational hydras if you take out the leaders they will be replaced by an underdog or this will lead to infighting between the cartels until someone fills the power void or the cartels break apart into smaller ones.
    2. Cartles Defacto control every city and town under 100,000 outside the metro areas the mayors or even the state governors are in the local cartel pockets and if you had family or friend that disappeared and had something to do with drugs or it was just in the wrong place at the wrong time the police will only "look into it" and do nothing there also the case if a local politician is not 100% agree with the cartel they be found decapitated in the outskirts of his town.
    3. The current Left-wing Party Morena was voted due to Increasing living costs and the infamous Gazolinaso of his predecessor Enrique peña Nieto of the Centrist neo-liberal PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional-Institucional revolutionary party) this party had run Mexico as a defacto One-Party State since the Revolution until 2006 when the Conservative PAN won but they we're the ones who started a war against cartels, so people had an extreme grudge and distrust toward these parties for their corruptions and allowing the cartels to flourish, so when AMLO and morena were voted in 2018 with an ill fix everything narrative he pretty much did the same only expending in welfare programs to look cool and adopted the infamous "Abrazos, no balazos policy"
His Sexsenio has been more violent since 1990 ( A sexsenio is what we call a presidential term a Mexican president can only serve 6 years without a chance of re-election) and his successor only seems it to keep doing the same so our government is pretty much cooluted.
    I hope this added something
Edit: okay i might exagerated on my original post and still to soon to say how will shenbaium will handle herself, when i sayed defacto cartel controled i didn't meant all territory outside the major cities it varies on the state and location
And even if control everthing in a small town they prefer to be discreate stay off sight and let most civilians carry a normal life.

Meh' this is an exaggeration. I agree there are areas where control is murky. It's not every small town. • @kjrom
      @kjrom 23 дні тому +12

I'm Mexican from rural part and I disagree, I think you exaggerate a little.
And successor of AMLO Claudia Sheinbaum seems to have changed the strategy and is definitely taking more active measures. Violence in Mexico has decrease 16% since she arrived.
AMLO 6 years can be said to have failed to reduce violence, but violence did not increase either, he received the most dangerous Mexico in history from EPN, one has to compare what one received and how he left it. Really AMLO didn't achieve almost any substantial change, either for the better or for the worse. Sheinbaum seems to be taking a much more active steps hopefully for the better.

Thanks. As it happens, of all Trump's threats, I think this is not only the most realistic but also the most justified. That is why I framed it as a genuine question about self-defence. The US is facing a huge drug problem, run by well-armed and highly-trained cartels that the Mexican Government hasn't been able to defeat. To my mind, this does raise very real issues for the United States. I still believe a cooperative approach is generally better on this and other things. But I can see why many would argue that unilateral military steps might be needed.

@JamesKerLindsay with due respects probably you don't know ....1) Mexico is an independent sovereign nation .not a colony to the point that some people believe is OK to invade a neighbor nation without repercussions .......2) ..disafortunatly there is a huge double standard with some politicians in the US ...due to the fact that US arm companies. are the ones responsible for providing the cartels with war weapons, ammunition, equipment .... and US citizens responsable for drug purchases , distribution and consumption in every community, towns and cities all over the country...
.in my personal opinion MEXICO AND THE US NEED to work honestly and firmly to find out the proper way to stop arming criminals that are killing individuals on both sides of the border and hurting thousands of inocent people ...... finally there is a lack of drug addiction clinics , and federal institutions along with psicological programs in the country to honestly help all those poore individuals down the street that are in need to recover the dignity already lost due to drugs !! !

@@Mark-gg6iy That is a cheap response. You suggest some sort of racism. These are highly armed, well trained, and extremely well-financed gangs. Of course tackling the domestic roots of the problem is crucial. But one can also recognise that these aren’t just some amateur provincial outfits. They are paramilitary organisations that are carrying out a range of violent crimes against the United States. My question, therefore, is whether the uS is entitled to use armed force to take on highly armed groups. Don’t make this about racism..

@@JorgeGarcia-mh5il I completely agree. This is a huge and complex problem. But if all the threats Trump has made, this one seems most rooted in an actual security problem. China will move on Taiwan. Then what?

    • @inthendwealldie
      @inthendwealldie 23 дні тому

Under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the US is committed to providing military support, defense assistance, arms sale for Taiwan, but not a formal mutual defense treaty to defend Taiwan, the Act is ambiguous. So, Trump could probably completely disregard Taiwan if he wants, but I think he seems to have a strong stance on Taiwan, I don't think it's as superbly strong as his stance on Israel.
Trump made the CCP Chinese officials really mad, because he took a phone call from Taiwan's President, the CCP didn't like that, that was back in 2016. He suggested that Taiwan should pay for its defense, and Trump never explicitly stated whether the US would militarily defend Taiwan in the event of a Mainland Chinese invasion.
So, it's not certain if he'll defend Taiwan should China move on them. And Taiwan is like a porcupine, they may hold out long enough should US CSGs assist them, perhaps US Marines in the fleet landing in Taiwan, perhaps Japan and Australia may aid Taiwan. All that is uncertain, though.
