I had a neighbor in Oklahoma that held a guy at gunpoint on my property waiting for the cops to show up. I was a single mom out in the boonies so I appreciated my neighbors
I'm a 73 yr old lady that enjoys this podcast and have watched each one of your families since you started you tube.Love watching all of your journeys. Thanks for sharing your life with all of us ❤️
Al, it was nice to see Pluto on your video! How old is he now? Your property is beautiful, and I am waiting for you to invite me to go fishing! 🤣 Ben, I've been watching your videos and reading a book you recommended, and have successfully cured and smoked several slabs of bacon, so thank you for showing me the way to get started with preserving meat! Jason, my husband and I have really enjoyed your channel, and he especially enjoys watching you build your fencing. We are planning on fencing in our land when the budget allows, and you've taught us alot. Thanks to you 3 for sharing your daily life with us.
As a retired builder I have to say your foundation is the most important thing and doing it correctly at the outset will relieve you of many issues later on. Everything else will be gravy!
Love listening to you guys' chat. I watch all of your channels and it's just fun to see you not producing but just hanging out and chit chatting! Great information and fun all the way around! Have a great week!
I agree with you Ben about trading meat for other escentials or other things , it's the people that won't work something out and say that they only get their meat from a grocery store and that's it ? It fascinates me they can't accept the fact !!!!! Wife just said eggs too ! It's amazing ! We were raised on a farm and really appreciate the opportunity and the rewards !!!!! Meat, vegetables, fruit etc. Home grown beets store bought , any day!!!!!! Literally !!!!!
If I juice some, it looks like V8 juice! My niece used to take the gallon I'd squeeze for them, & she'd hide it in their garage. Confessed 25 years later. Lol. It's the best juice I've ever had!! EVER!!
Al LGD!! NOT GLD!! 😊❤❤❤❤ Loved last week's video. Oh, make sure Gina doesn't bring Brutus in. She's a hug fluff butt kind of gal! 😆 🤣 l love you all so much.
❤ totally love the idea of barter system. We need to treat off grid and farmers we are going to be needing them very soon. Demand and supply getting more n more difficult
The pig's hair gets used for paint brushes, the hide for footballs, the meat and organs go for food, the bones for bone meal fertilizer, the intestines for sausage casings. Then Vienna Sausages are made from the 'pork by-products', which are, apparently, noses, lips, gums and eyelids...
People on your property: We live on a small lake (75 acres) and occasionally during the summer we will find some stranger fishing off of our dock. They usually won't stay long but, I also have a bench for us to sit on and enjoy the lake and we will see someone we don't know sitting on it. It is a shock and it makes you wonder if you should say something or not. Coming from the city, you have the idea that your property is "your" property. But, I've found out that a portion of land that surrounds our lake is considered an easement and is actually okay for people to wander on. If they come 10 yards away from the lake they are on private property. We also live in a neighborhood that has a "no fence" rule. It looks lovely when observing the area but, is a different mindset than "city" living.
Thanks y'all!! I don't mind guests, really, it was just something I should have been sitting down and watching and taking notes when Billy was talking... But I was trying to clean the garage! LOL I had to replay a few parts but he was very knowledgeable and he's helped me put some stuff on my to do list that I need to check into once I get into a new area. Some brilliant stuff, and I hope that he does come and try some things out on your property. I'd be curious about the results!
Funny you guys talked about bartering....my father was a plumber and there was a butcher that would fill our freezer with really good meat to pay his bill. He was happy and we were happy
As a kid I could walk into most any coffee shop, grab a glass and serve my own fountain drink or pull a coke from the cooler or help myself to coffee or tea and sit down and listen to farmers shooting the sh!÷ and telling stories and jokes. You three have kind of recreated that for me because now I just grab my beverage of choice and listen.
My in-suburb home i maintained a couple raised beds and then a good sized potato patch in the back yard. Because of house and shed placements none of this was visible from the front of the house, the raised beds visible to house on either side of me and potatoes only visible to one neighbor. No fences in this area but property lines vlearly marked. I was having a problem with lettuce, carrots, tomatoes and cukes disappearing from my beds just as they were becoming ripe. It looked suspicious because lettuce and carrots were pulled out by roots and there was never any chewed on stubs of anything but i tried telling myself perhaps racvoons were smart enough to remove fully and take back to their home. One morning at the kitchen window I noticed yhe potato plants were starting to die out so i was going to dig up that weekend. The next morning i looked out and not a plant in sight. I went out to the bed and not only was it obvious the whole bed had beendug up while i was at work, the person who did that had iused my shovel from my tool shed to dog them up and left the shovel by the empty bed. It wasa couple days later that i found the potato greens all tossed in the wooded strip of land behind all our homes. Im not ready to believe raccoons have learned to use shovels. Fortunately they moved shortly after but definitely reinforces the value of good fences to keep people off my property.
That was awful. After all the work you put into planting and raising veggies and then a spiteful neighbor does a "midnight requisition" and takes it all. That's bout as low down as they come.
Once again, fellas, that was a 5-star program!! But, even though I celebrate Fridays because of your episode coming out, there is one thing that is really hard to stomach. And, that is.....ONLY ONE EPISODE per week! Yeah, I know y'all are way too busy to food with another episode, but just know that those of us out in the boondocks are really hungry for what you bring to the table each week. I enjoy each of your channels, so this is a great experience to spend an hour with y'all as you share what's common and what's unique. Thanks for doing this! ~Dr. Larry S. Anderson • Tupelo, MS (birthplace of Elvis!....so y'all come!)
Just made a batch of fresh orange scones here in Northern California this morning. Yummy 😋. Many oranges are still on the trees. We have every fruit you can think of here! Feeling blessed 🥹. Nave Oranges .48 cents a pound.
Yeah, same here. We moved from L.A. to rural central Florida. We love the peace and quiet, and building our homestead, but we sure miss alot of the little things L.A. offered that we took for granted.
Clicked today because of the title. 😂 This happens to other people too?! We just have randos walking/driving through the gate or jumping a fence. It's so weird. We even had our old Internet company jump the fence to check and make sure we weren't stealing cable... It's so dangerous, I'm surprised so many try it
Our 5~Rhode Island Reds chickens took a break in January but now with longer daylight their back to laying! We had one chicken beheaded over a year ago, she was attacked by a red fox, but the fox couldn't get her through the fence. I agree, people don't need to be going on anyone's property, especially today with the gun situation!
I liked that you had a guest on. Personally, I think Billy can be a lot but he is also full of great information. You can't please everyone. Keep the shows coming, I love them guests or no guests.
Al , add a gosling or 2 8n with the chickens. Cage them up inside the chicken run so they learn to live with the chickens. Then once they are grown they will protect the flock.
As kids, we used to follow creeks and hike point to point without any care as to who owns the land.. we would walk point to point to our friends' homes. One time, we were challenged. We were walking across a strawberry field. If the crop had not been ripe, I don't think we would have been chased off.
Yes…even with no trespassing signs, a closed gate and being on a private road we get wandering people. Some neighbors think it’s ok and random tourists checking out our cabin rentals.
Country ham is seriously salty. I love it! My grandfather used to have a big salt box that he put it in, inside the smokehouse. Of course, I’m a southern girl, so…
Ben I just realized you were from Kern Co. CA. My sister lives there. My niece has tons of fruit trees. She’s always posting for friends to come and pick up extra fruit.
We make country ham every year, and we use a recipe with the salt, pepper, and brown sugar. Black pepper also stops the bugs! We pack this on the meat, wrap it tightly in brown paper, place it in a cotton sack and hand it with the hock down. It will drain a lot of fluid. This lets you know it is "working". We let ours hang for a minimum of 4-6 months, slice it, and freeze it. I always soak the meat in water for at least an hour before I cook it, because it is really salty if you don't.
I had a first in 19 years, my older neighbor was walking on my property the first nice day! I didn’t say anything as I was worried he was lost after crossing the property line! He went back pretty quickly but it was surprising! I am definitely thinking about getting a bigger dog to protect my 2 ankle biters from coyotes and strangers! I would definitely have a Brutus of my own if I had livestock! Thanks guys see you next week!
My vac died because of an electrical short and I gathered up all the extra parts (its a Kirby), took them to the shop and exchanged parts I’d never used for a new electrical cord. Bartering works. I’m happy and he was happy.😊
Getting your permanent fencing done will be a huge blessing, its such a help if one of your critters gets out and for keeping unwelcome critters out! but ugh some serious work!
I loved Billy being on y’all’s podcast! Didn’t know who he was, but I look forward to checking him out. 👍 Loved this Podcast. Y’all have never failed this old woman ❤ 👍👏👍
Feed the chickens some hot pepper flakes in with the feed. I’ve been doing this every now and then this winter and they picked up laying eggs again. My chickens are now 6 years old.
BEN, where did you find a good blood Orange? I'll order. When I was in BERLIN Germany in the 60's I ate them from Spain. Ive never had one in U.S. that was any good. They were Delicious best flavor Juicey Red. HI BILLY FROM LAST WEEK. GLAD HE JOINED YOU. HOPE HE COMES BACK SOON.❤
Another great video, thanks for sharing. I learn something every time. Memories came up, a hog farmer, the old country way, raised a pig for us that we were given. Poor piggy had a broken leg, probably mom rolled on it. Kept at our tiny "spread" until it healed; it was like having a puppy. As it grew we realized, oops, this is a little much so he went to hog camp them off to the butcher. Did do a country ham and you're right, mold did grow on it. Just trimmed that away and the meat was awesome. We did a salt cure if I remember correctly. Anyway, thanks again for an informative and laugh provoking video.
Tks for another great video. As for what has killed chickens rats killed all mine. .... Had camera on my coop and saw this rat kill and drag chicken off....lol...had to double reinforce top to bottom and side to side. This year a possium has found our duck eggs , so I see him on camera at night...lol....ya are awesome and I watch all three of ya. Much love from NC.
You guys ever read the Foxfire books? They're a whole bunch of books where people went into the Appalachian backwoods and wrote down all their living traditions like butchering, processing, and other self sufficiency methods.
🇦🇺When my mum met my step father he had an Australian cattle dog named Brutus. He was a little possessive of my dad so he was re-homed to a cattle station.
Just an FYI Ben sharing about Black Pepper helping to control mold on hams reminded me that if you ever slice your finger or cut and it won’t quit bleeding and you may or may not need stitches pour black pepper on it and it stops the bleeding and makes like a plaster and will heal without scaring. It will gradually fall off as it heals . I was told this and was afraid it would burn or sting but was in a situation not close to medical care and it works and no pain or sting Also no scarring.Or infection!!
Now you're talking Ben. Country Ham was a staple from our hog killings. Ours weren't wrapped, it was just packed with salt and black pepper and hung by a piece of wire in the smoke house (which nothing was ever smoked in, just the name of the building). Could have been something else with the salt and pepper also....(borax is coming to mind) because I was very young when we still did our own. Love the salty over the sweet Virginia style ham.
We had a Brutus and bruta both Great Danes. Good luck We taught if it’s not your don’t touch and that includes neighbors lawns. No respect anymore. Y’all stay safe it’s a f’d up world.
There is a dairy here in Michigan called Mooville Dairy whose entire heard is A2A2 and sells their milk and ice cream in local stores. They even sell a non-homogenized whole milk.
Move to Wyoming. I was talking to the building guy in Albany county asking him questions about some touchy items. Finally, he said, "We just want your money." :)
Everyone on this block has some type of a tree so my neighbor to the right has grapefruit two different kind. She has peaches she did have mandarin, but I think the freeze killed it. I’m not sure what else she has in her backyard, then the one next to her has an avocado in the front yard and gets a lot of them but they’re not the California avocado or maybe they are thin skin. I’m not too fond like that ones ,I like thick skin ,but she passes them out. We all pass out stuff to each other all the time.🌱🌱🌱
Ben you will be happy with the cellar to store your food and hang your cured meats and blessings to your family that you get it done with no more hasels and good luck with the buld❤
Christmas Eve, 3 foxes got into our chickens...lost 8 hens, the rooster. Needless to say the foxes are no more. Have had problems with skunks, possums.
The same neighbors were to lazy to move a car to get out of their driveway/ front yard land ol that they drove around a hedge through my front yard , over the sidewalk and around my mailbox to get to the road
I am in the far Northwest corner of Washington State and we have a local diary with A2A2 for $10 gallon- I love it and get and 11th gallon so a small discount. Can't wait for all the locals to get back to selling eggs- we are still in the dark but it will switch soon. Love having local farms.
I had a neighbor in Oklahoma that held a guy at gunpoint on my property waiting for the cops to show up. I was a single mom out in the boonies so I appreciated my neighbors

❤ totally agree just love their individual channels but lovevthe 3 guys comparing what each have done with added great info re bacon etc
Just FYI, Pluto is a female.
at the time they got Pluto their daughter was around 4 and loved the show so she named the dog even though its a female and she is 9 ish
Al, think about a guard goose. They're always on watch for aerial predators.
I can guarantee that. I was a phone repairman and was held in my truck on a customers property.
"Pastured & protected, because every predator likes chicken" Great job as always!
My daughter once adopted a rescue named Oink. Needless to say first time she heard herself outside yelling OINK! ... she changed that dog's name....
Hello to the 3 amigos, Happy Friday!!

I appreciated you having Billy on last week. If you want to learn charcuterie, he's a gem. Cut up a whole hog in an hour, lol

Good that this week was more laid back to compensate. LOL
The channel is GROWING 🌱👍🏽
🇦🇺Water glass eggs for the winter.
Al that’s what the dog is good for,the ones I have seen is really good with chicken.
I lived alone for a time and had a 120lb. Rottweiler named Lenox, after the boxer.

We are finding more of the milk in our grocery store is being labeled A2 and we are in a small town.
Our grocery store in northeast Tennessee carries A2/A2 milk now. I bought it once, think it was about $6 half gallon carton.
@@territn8871 We have had the "A2" brand before but now other brands are advertising A2.
Fun fact: skunks are cousins to ferrets and weasels. So, yes they will eat not just the eggs but the chickens too.
Guys, you’re killing me. I am making spam this morning with potatoes. 🤣🤣🤣 we love SPAM nasty

I have a blood orange tree in my backyard. Oh my!!! They sell for $1.35+ each. It's like gold here in Scottsdale!! And the BEST ever.
Al you should forget about eating your young steer, but use him as a breader for your own A2A2 heard!! 🤗
As kids, we used to follow creeks and hike point to point without any care as to who owns the land.. we would walk point to point to our friends' homes.
One time, we were challenged. We were walking across a strawberry field. If the crop had not been ripe, I don't think we would have been chased off.

Wonderful show guys. Very funny stuff! Good to know skunks are chicken predators, not only for eggs.

Al the barn looking great ..Ben sorry to see you have to redo the addition foundation 😢..Jason glad you got the roof fix 👍
They've been selling A2A2 milk in our Braums for over a year now. The price is either $4.69 per gallon or 2 gallons for $6.00.
I live in SE MICHIGAN do you?
I believe Braun’s has the largest A2A2 heard in the US. It is delicious
Great podcast. Keep it going!!!

To be fair rats can come as large as a cat. Your cats are probably intimidated, but I bet they get the mice!🐭

I am in the far Northwest corner of Washington State and we have a local diary with A2A2 for $10 gallon- I love it and get and 11th gallon so a small discount. Can't wait for all the locals to get back to selling eggs- we are still in the dark but it will switch soon. Love having local farms.
