  • During the 19 days spent in Grenada, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) crew took two days to explore the Spice Island by car. We drove along the east, north and west coasts and off the beaten path. This video captures the most interesting moments: Grand Etang, Grenville, Concorde waterfall, Dougladston Estate, Gouyave Nutmeg Factory, Victoria, Sauteurs, Bathway Beach, Levera, River Antoine Distillery & estate, Grenada Chocolate Factory, and bits in-between.

      Spice Chick thanks for the positive comment. We don’t have many on our Grenada video!
      The truth is we loved the fact that wild beach was not developed and that the island was not teaming with tourists. It was our sense of humor that got us into trouble with some Grenedians ... that silly scene where we are on the wild beach (joking) about envisioning a hotel there. We much prefer the beach as we saw it .... totally unspoilt.

      Actually, one of our guides said you guys want hotels, but want someone else to build them. And "emotional" is a nice way of putting what basically amounts to straight up bullying. You seem like one of the nicer ones though. Actually, I noticed the pattern after a while. The Grenadians that supported the US invasion were super friendly, and the locals who supported Mauice Bishop were extremely rude and bitter. I am sad to say this, because the island was the most beautiful I've been to, and geography wise, it was probably my favorite. However, the way I was treated by the islanders really ruined the place for me. This was the rudest and most unwelcoming country I had ever been too, and I will never come back here again. However, if it makes you feel any better, Barbados and Curacao were also very rude. This seems to be an issue with black people, because I didn't have this problem in Puerto Rico, Aruba or Bonaire. In Puerto Rico, even in the bad neighborhoods they were friendly. And I've noticed on a lot of the black islands, the locals get very angry if you criticize their island, especially if you mention anything regarding crime. But I think in most of those cases, they are scared of losing tourism, though with Grenada, this doesn't seem to be the case.

    I enjoyed the video. The very north of the island you mentioned sauteurs is a French name given during slavery when we were ruled by the French . But pronounce it as suh-tears. And it's very normal to drive around the island and pick fruits from the roadside trees my family and I do it too. And am a local. So have fun man don't worry but the nitty picky complainers.

      Ramona. Very glad you enjoyed the video and so glad to get a positive comment among so many negatives from other Grenadans who seem read our sense of humor the wrong way. We LOVED your island.

      They're probably taking it wrong cause government is also helping foreigners put up more hotels and depriving us of our little park area where we've been enjoying for decades, wanting to upgrade everything and not putting the citizens concerns in their mind. But its nice when others enjoy what we take for granted.

    • @SailCloudyBay

      Seems to be an across-the-board issue in all Caribbean islands - that land is given to developers and the local population have less and less access to their own beaches and sea fronts. The worst was on Canouan where the locals are now squeezed into one village and the rest of the island privatized. And on that scale, we actually found Grenada (and local Grenadan's) to be much better off than other islands. That is, less development and sell off. In the Grenadine islands particularly, the Grenadian islands were in big contrast to the St.Vincent islands where privatization is clearly big revenue for the government there. Or, dare I say it, big revenue for a few politicians personal pockets more like! with zero cash flow to the people other than a few labor type jobs.

    Yikes! NO leave it in it's natural state. Why do you only see "development" and not the beauty already there. Just stop! Go develop your own land,

    • @SailCloudyBay
      @SailCloudyBay  5 років тому

      Not sure what "development" we talked about on the video. Truth is, we loved the natural beauty of Grenada, and all the windward islands, and we hoped that came through on the videos. That said, there must be something about this particular video on Grenada (or Grenadan's are a particularly sensitive) because of all our videos, this one has attracted our only negative responses. So, apologies if we inadvertently offended in anyway.

      Sail Cloudy Bay How on earth can you claim that you “don’t know” what development you mention when I am just over a minute into your video and you’ve said it twice already? How do you not know what content you are posting? Grenada is not that kind of place - why would you want to spoil its authenticity?

    • @briantravelman

      THANK YOU! He said it in his Carricaou and some other videos too. I thought he was being serious at first, but I think he's only joking. But I do agree that it's getting annoying. But actually, one of our guides said Grenadians want hotels, but want someone else to build them, contrary to what the comments say. NOW, in response to the UPLOADER, I'm honestly not surprised at some of the negative comments you're getting from locals. I spent 10 days on this island. We maybe only met ten friendly people there, give or take. The rest of the islanders were a bunch of racist bullies who hated tourists. I honestly don't know how anyone can say this island is friendly. I've been to over 20 countries, and Grenada was by far the rudest and most unwelcoming place I've ever visited. One more thing, it's called PUBLIC transportation. I'm gonna ride it, if I want to. If you have a problem with that, then just post a sign that says, "locals only". Same goes for your bars. If you guys don't want tourists, just say so. We'll stop coming let you assholes starve to death.

      It seems as though you all had fun and it's probably the best way to go sightseeing and immerse yourself and put your foot on the ground. However, I must warn you not go around taking fruits etc on lands without permission. A local farmer will not take it lightly. On the other hand, local farmers will gladly offer/share with you.
