Thank you mr Carveth! I find this one to be one of your best uploads to his point! Very important! The world needs this information! I am grateful you put all this stuff on! Greetings from the Netherlands, Al
Since going through a discerned Cluster B relationship this subject knowledge has become a fascinating journey. Not necessarily pointing fingers but of introspection. We only arrive at a destination if we have taken the fast track there. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much, Dr. Carveth! The topic of pathological narcissism is extra topical these days: from understanding of oneself, to understanding of close relations, to understanding of societal and political milieu. However unpopular this may be nowadays, there is no real winning in the narcissistic delusional aspiration to "never lose any fights"...
Tank you for teaching. I have been learning psychoanalysis and i intrusted in kleinian theory. I learn it in persian languge. But recently i find your video. Its very useful for me. TaNk you so much again
Will Trump ever get the recognition for all his contributions to humanity??? Describes my childhood, adulthood and my awakening is being present. In Christ I trust ✝️ mankind fails us when a relationship withj the Maker will satisfy the soul.
You can tell that you used to teach psychology I wish there were more professors like you I love in this video how you are having a dialogue with someone that opposes some of your views and so instead of you dismantling his views with a straw man argument you have a meaningful dialogue with him to better explain your views and you leave it up to him to make the choice whether your views are right. There are no professors like that in my university where I go. You should go back to teaching just because there's not many teachers like you and you are a great example to other soon to be professors
Hi Dr. Carveth. I hear that in the face of extreme vulnerability the baby seeks safety and love of the primary caretaker. So say a boy is seeking to be the phallus to mother (to be all what she desires) and in a sense remains in a narcissistic state, isn’t being narcissist a defense against losing safety (by losing the love of mother) and ultimately a defense against fear of death?
@@doncarveth Thank you for your answer. Also, I was hoping if you could explain the relationship between "Don Juanism" and oedipal complex (and narcissism) in a video. That would be very interesting. Thank you again.
Why can’t some students just let the professor finish his sentence first and then show off his “insightful knowledge”? We miss out a lot of what he was going to say. You are here to gain knowledge from him, not taking up everybody’s time it is not your show. Nothing constructive from that person anyways.
Is not the phallus in Lacan symbolic, as the signifier of significance, faith in the sybolic order or fear of absence? If so, how could he be patriarchal, especially when acceptance of castration is the medium for reclaiming subjectivity and overcoming narcissism, the specular ego?
Thank you, this lecture was really insightful and helpful. Do you have a reference for the infant research project, as I'd like to look more into this please
Narcissism is not bad, it's suffering, plain and unmitigated, constant suffering. It's being sick, ie. not being able to function and act as you would like to. It's very strange to me to hear a psychoanalyst making this categorial confusion between moral and developmental or moral and pathological. Is being psychotic bad? It may be bad for others, but it's not a decision for the self. Neither is narcissism or being unable to love. How can you attribute moral responsibility to something that is not freely chosen?
Dr. Carveth is not making a categorical confusion between moral/developmental. I think what he's saying is that narcissism is a defense against a more serious pathology of borderline functioning. If narcissism is indeed this sort of defence, then it must be defending against something "worse". In a sense, it's not that relevant to focus on whether or not moral responsibility is freely chosen or not. The take home message is what would happen is the narcissistic defence was able to removed? What's underneath narcissism is suffering...narcissism in itself is not suffering.
Of course it's bad if you're sick. Doesn't matter if you chose it or not. You have to do something about it. If I had a physical illness and I continually refused to see a doctor then you'd very quickly start to blame me for prolonging my own suffering. As someone once said to me "It's not your fault, but it is your responsibility".
Dr carveth but i think Freud by saying that we are not aware of our decisions and our unconcious is, point out the narcisism and the whole problem that you were sayin all human have...wanting to be in the center, dont you agree with that?
Have you ever successfully treated a depressed patient whose pain makes them excessively self-referential? Your following comments really make me wonder:: "why are depressed people such a bore, why do we not want to be around them, because it's all about them....depressed people are completely wrapped up in themselves, they have very little capacity to empathise with other people, we want to get away from them..." No wonder Klein's son killed himself and her daughter disowned her, with these sorts of ideas floating about.... DISCUSS.... :-)
Professional psychoanalysts don't blurt their countertransference reactions in cruel and hurtful ways but use them to better understand their patients who are people who in addition to being in pain themselves often inflict pain on those around them.
thanks, I appreciate the response....am playing devils advocate here of course. I find the ideas fascinating but sometimes wonder if psychoanalysis is at risk of trying to be too clever. I would much sooner a therapist who is wise other one who is clever. Klein's attempts at analysing her own kids was obviously disastrous. Does this shocking lack of insight on her part not reduce how seriously we should take her theories?
wow, Harrison Ford has come a long way from a total knucklehead to the most sensible psychologist I've come across in a long while 😂
Yeah he does remind me of him with the glasses on
Man you are such a great teacher. Thank you so much for all your uploads.

It really gets good around 20 minutes in!
I really enjoy your videos. I find them to be a great addition to my training as a psychologist.

The student whose argument begins at 18:22, is so spot on. I think he's heading in the right direction and I hope he continues his search for answers.

Most welcome
His knowledge and the way he conveys it is amazing and I really enjoy his lectures. His accentuated feminism is funny to watch though.
Great talk
So true. The narcissist must reject Jesus as a “loser”.
Don has the best head of hair in all of psychoanalysis!
Thanks, Andrew
Yes, Kainos, it's bad to be in pain and unable to function and act as you would like to.
Amazing!
Great work!

Thank you very much. I’m afraid it’s a little too late for me to go back, but I will keep teaching on UA-cam as long as I can. All the best

@@atarajabnejad990 I think narcissism is a defense, but I’m not sure we can bring death into the picture. There’s an infant even know about death.

I didn't know Freud said that about love
Dr carveth can we say that the early 6 mounth of the baby before he or she goes to miror stage, an oceanic exprience?
Perhaps, but not oneness

Dr Carvath: Would you be interested in presenting at NCP in Los Angeles?
I'm certainly open to the possibility, yes. Lots of interesting folks there.
Is not the phallus in Lacan symbolic, as the signifier of significance, faith in the sybolic order or fear of absence? If so, how could he be patriarchal, especially when acceptance of castration is the medium for reclaiming subjectivity and overcoming narcissism, the specular ego?
To answer that would require a lot of dialogue, definitions of terms, etc.
Wonderful presentation, just a pity about the distracting fidgeting sounds.

Daniel Stern’s “The Interpersonal World of the Infant” is srill good on this.
Thank you

Freud should not have analyzed his daughter Anna.
yeah I guess she turned out ok...seemed like a nice enough lady :-)
What a narcissistic student
