the Fehr chain hoist I bought came with no instructions, so I called them, hoping they had a PDF I could download. They said look on UA-cam (no joke). So I did and found this video and it's the exact same Fehr model as mine! Your video is a great tutorial - i needed to file the keyway on mine too. thanks for making this!
Morning Mojo Well we're getting our nasty rain sleet ice n snow right now I'm going to install me one of those chain thing so I can have one those come in handy for lots of things
I agree. If you have no need to open a garage door from your car, then it is much better to have one of these chain hoists. I open my pole barn door once or twice a week in the summer, and do it with a rope. One of these would make that easier for a reasonable price!
Today I got the Chain Hoist Garage Door Opener installed! amzn.to/3rn11VF The unit is a Fehr 4:1 unit for a 1" solid, keyed shaft. This is the one I used. There are links for various other models below. When we had these doors installed, the original bid was pretty insane, and a lot of that insanity was the price of the opener! Our other large door has no opener at all, and we've gotten by all these years with that with zero problems. If this were a garage and it was being used to park a car that was used every day to go to work, then absolutely, but this is a country outbuilding which makes things different. It will be closed the entire winter, and in the summer it will be open the majority of the time. I will never pull up to the building and need the door open while I stay in a warm dry vehicle. If you are building an outbuilding for a country property and are putting in overhead doors, this is is the best solution in my opinion. The 4:1 gear ratio gives plenty of lifting power (in addition to the door's springs), so the door goes up smooth as silk, and you can lock the door up or down with the included latch - and even add a padlock if you will be away! Very good job, that fascinated me how you put it all together. I understand your reasoning for the manual hoist now, makes perfect sense. Although leaving the door open in the summer you may be surprised as some of the critters that you'll find in the morning in there.... 🙂
Thanks Dave! I really like chain hoists for utility buildings like this. Easy to use, and will likely never fail. As for the critters, there will be a dividing wall so any critter that comes in will be restricted to the gardening area - and the cats will have free run of the area as well. It will likely be as it is now, where we find critter parts in the morning 😉
Thank you for the time you spent lighting, recording, editing and posting this. I looking at a few choices and your video helped me see how much length of the shaft is needed and it verified I can mount it on either side of the door. FYI, your door isn't really locked by securing the chain. Granted anyone trying to open it has to pickup the full weight of the door since the spring won't be helping them. But a couple of determined guys can get it open with just two strong backs and their weak minds.
Thanks Mark! Not sure the door can be lifted at all. I tried it, and unless the chain skips the track or possibly the unit itself is broken. Having said that, a dedicated thief can get through nearly anything 😑
Good job and thank you for documenting the install. Too bad you were not able to provide the link to the video directly in your Amazon review. Found your video when I read the review. I was thinking of buying one of those electric jackshaft door openers... But for less than a 100.00 I can do the same (manually of course) which is just fine!
Thinking about getting one of these for our large manual door...My husband can open it and I can as well but its pretty heavy. My MIL has a really hard time with it and it diacourages her from opening it to get out stuff that eould make her life easier while shes working in the garden etc. I'm really thinking rhis would be the way to go. I'll be checking to see if i have the right kind of shaft and the space to install one of these. I did have one question though, does the door get out of control when lowering it? I worked at a place with a smaller door on a chain hoist like this and when it started coming down it would almost freefall almost got pinched in the chains a few times. Our door as it is comes down pretty fast we have a rope at the bottom corner we gab and use to slow it down so it doesn't slam.
You should have someone adjust the tension spring. It should take-up the weight of the door. If you have one of these hoists installed, have them do that at the same time. The springs get 'tired' over time 😴
Hey Mojo is there any way to modify something like this for use with a cable or belt instead of a chain? I have a lighter duty application and i need it to be more silent than the chain.
Whats the difference in the chain operator thats bolted to the wall and just a sprocket on the shaft...is it a heavier duty unit? Or maybe better for shorter shaft lenghts??
Another question: If I adjust the torsion rod of the garage door shaft, would that make this chain hoist unnecessary? In other words, is this actually a torsion adjustment problem?
@@PlanetMojo Wow! Thank you for your quick response! Yes, adjusting the torsion would not raise the garage door up 12 feet. But I’m asking if the reason that the garage door is so heavy to lift is that the torsion spring needs to be adjusted. If I adjust the tension of the torsion spring, then the garage door would be lighter and easier to lift. Thus, making it unnecessary to buy this chain hoist. I think I will adjust torsion tension *and* install the chain lift to make a heavy garage door easier to lift. I’ll be doing both in the next week or two. Will report on progress. Thank you for all your help! Your video is super helpful and concise!
@@thynanewcomb770 Yes, the torsion should be adjusted until the door is basically weightless, but if the door is over 8' tall you really need an opener or a chain hoist like you said. I have an 8' door on the other side of the shop that just has a rope, but any taller and I would need a stick or something to push it up. Good luck 😊
@@PlanetMojo Thank you for your kind help! I ended up just increasing the torsion springs’ tension. The garage door is almost 8 feet high, about 4 inches short of 8 feet. And we use a stick to push the garage door above our heads. I might install the chain hoist if and when my mom gets weaker. Thank You!

Thanks Shed Homes! An electric opener make no sense on most rural buildings, and a simple rope can be difficult so it really is a great solution!
Thank you!!!! We had no clue how to install our Fehr opener, and this video explained it perfectly! 😊

Hi Mojo, great video and a job well done.

I measured 3 1/2". Make sure to measure to the first obstacle, which in my case was the track. Good luck!
