This earthquake cluster is reminiscent of the diking event on the NE flank of Bardarbunga in 2014, which preceded the emergence of lava in 2014, the distribution of earthquakes propagated away from the caldera rim as the dike pushed to the SE and then NE. There are some papers about it in Nature etc.

Good pronunciation of Askja and Kista :) BTW, you really downplayed the main threat for a subglacial eruption, which is the water, not the ash (jökulhaup - glacial outburst floods). If you want to get a sense of how insanely powerful this can be, look up the geologic history of Ásbyrgi, you'll get a good idea ;) Most aren't *that* strong, but they do sever the route between east and west on either the north or south (usually the south), taking out not just roads but bridges as well. We're so used to this threat that we pre-stock bridge segments and equipment for rebuilding bridges. Also, while you mentioned that Bárðarbunga can be powerful, I don't think most viewers got a sense of exactly how powerful it can be. The largest lava flow *on Earth* in the *entire Holocene* comes from Bárðarbunga - the Þjórsárshraun. 25 cubic kilometers. A typical eruption near Svartsengi might be a hundredth of a of a cubic kilometer. I mean, it can be a *monster* .
BTW, other pronunciation tips (Rs alveolar rolls or taps, like Spanish, but if you can't do that, no big deal):
Bárðarbunga: Your usual pronunciation issue comes up - stress. Remember, Icelandic is ALWAYS on the first syllables of each part of a word, it literally doubles their length, and this is *the* most important rule in Icelandic pronunciation. Otherwise, your pronuciation is good. BOWR-thar BOON-ka. Bárður's Shield-Volcano. Everything you see in caps, double the length of the lower case stuff.
Vatnajökull: In addition to the stress issues (you're stressing all syllables equally), it also sounds like you're saying "vatna yo-cut". I understand that the tl is unusual (though it's not hard with practice, unlike rolled Rs, which people can struggle with for years - just block the airflow from the back of your mouth with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, let the pressure build up, then let it burst out to the sides with a click), but it's not "yo" - Ö is like the "i" in "pig", but said with rounded lips. So it's more like VAT-nuh YIH-kih. To make it sound right, it's important that there's no vowels after the Ö. The "tl" doesn't sound like "toll"; it's just a click. If you can't do the "tl", it's best to just say a "t", that way there's no vowel in there.
Hóluhraun: HOLE-uh-HROYN. You're trying too hard on this one, it's actually English-like :) Your "hraun" is good, by the way, and you got the stress right :)
Eyjafjallajökull: EY-ya-FYA-uh-YIH-kih (see the notes on "jökull", and in particular Ö, above). In particular, you're pronouncing "Ey" (island) like the english word "EYE", which isn't right - that sound is spelled Æ :) All that said... you're better than like 90% of English speakers; it wasn't some sort of incomprehensible bungling.
Rjúpnabrekkukvísl (the one you didn't even try... I'm so sorry for our language, BTW ;) ) - the breakdown is "Rjúpna" (of ptarmigans) + "Brekku" (of a slope) + "kvísl" (fork, branch - like in a river) - the Ptarmigan-Slope Branch. So that's RYOOP-nuh BRECK-ih KVEESL (or you could drop that final L - it's devoiced, no vowel sound, so not very audible)
Jökulhlaup: Once again we hit that "Ö" issue - just think "like PIG, but with rounded lips". "YIH-cull-HLOYP". Sorry that our AU is pronounced OY (like "oyster"), not "OW" like it would be in German :( BTW, it's literally "Glacier Run", because the water "runs" really quickly.

    • @karenrobertsdottir4101
      @karenrobertsdottir4101 13 днів тому

To point out how much stress matters, picture an immigrant to the US trying to say "helicopter", and saying the vowels right but the stress wrong:
      "I saw a heLICKKK-opTERRR"
Now picture another saying the vowels wrong but the stress right:
      "I saw a HEE-lee-COPE-ter"
The latter should be more recognizable, even though the vowels are entirely wrong. But it's much moreso of an issue in Icelandic because *every* word has a standard stress, and there's such a big stress difference, so it's a core part of how we recognize words. If you put the stress on the wrong syllable, it makes it sound like it's the start of the next word, and so both words sort of "fall apart".

If he can drill into himself how to stress words, and teach himself to recognize the boundaries between subwords even if he doesn't know them (e.g. most commonly break on -a, -s, -ar, or -u), he should be able to get away with pronouncing pretty much anything in a fully understandable manner, even if he occasionally gets a vowel wrong (like Ö). :) Some common terms he's gotten down, like "hraun"; it's clear he's practiced.

Very interesting lesson again, v. well done as always, tyvm! I was in some livestream and on RUV that 14.1.24 as well. Everything was so exciting, interesting - and devastating. Next day I read an interview with the owner of this v. modern and newly built house, that started burning first. The family had planned to move in it a few days before Christmas, but then the evacuation came... He said they will build a new house somewhere else as soon as possible and start a new life there. Even if a fissure never opens in Grindavik, it will be difficult to return to normal life at some point. All my very best wishes for the residents of Grindavik wherever they will live in the future.

Firstly, thanks for the great update, Shawn. Will be interesting to see what transpires over the next few days and weeks in that area. Secondly, happy double anniversary! I vividly remember watching that little vent opening up live on your NatureEye flight! As you say, both horrifying and kinda exciting at the same time. So glad it didn't open up any further - things could have been so much worse for Grindavik. Fingers crossed we don't see anything opening up at that end of the fissure in the future either! Take care and see you soon! :)

The USGS doesn't typically register earthquakes, outside of the US, under 4.5 (even though sometimes they do). They continue to use their own methodology to determine magnitude, which differs from other agencies. They state, "Earthquakes occurring outside the U.S. that are smaller than about magnitude 4.5 can be difficult for the USGS to locate if there are not enough data."

Great video, thanks alot. I had my breakfast this morning as I noticed the EQ-swarm just began. I had to wait for 1,5 hours, until the media reported about the swarm. It was then all over the news and many discussions were made in the radio, i.e. with Þorvaldur Þórðarson. The IMO declares to swarm as a magma intrusion so far. It might erupt in the coming days. But I´ll wait for the next eruption near Svartsengi if I can see it again from my home in Vogar. Greetings from Iceland.

This event actually started the day before with a Jökkulhaup, and these are usually followed in a day or two by some seismic activity. The jökkulhaup eases the pressure/ weight of the glacier and facilitetes movement.
But there is for sure an intrusion as well. Did the intrusion cause the quakes, or the jökkulhaup? nobody knows.

The ground deformation seems to be a good indicator. It has been mentioned, but Bárðarbunga is much larger volcano than Svartsengi we have been watching on Reykjanes penninsula. Therefore, I would like to mention, to have an idea of the scale of the ground deformation: Bárðarbunga caldera collapsed by 65 metres during the last eruption. The uplift since then was around 20 metres.

I believe Geologyhub said the adjacent Askja volcano in that area may erupt soon

I think the largest of these quakes woke me up this morning. There is no doubt this system has been recharging since it´s last little episode. My students might get a front row seat this system... I just don´t hope we end up with a grey eruption which is going to be a nightmare for just about everyone ;)

Have you had a chance to look at those Excel tables I sent you a few days ago?

I live in Iceland and I would not describe Earthquakes below 5 as strong.
