In my opinion the video clearly is a view on the parasocial relationships formed between idol and fans, where we really feel like they are ours friends but ultimately they are people we don’t know. Those relationships despite bringing confort and company when we feel the most lonely can also be damaging to one’s life and that is represented in the video as the girl alienated herself from her classmates, walks in the rain and dangerously backwards on a rooftop. Ultimately as she grows older, she is able to grow up and move on from her loneliness and form a real relationship with the boy on the video while also looking back with fondness at NewJeans and the comfort they brought her.

I thought about it, too but first, why would such young group as NJ tried to send this kind of message? They are young, ambitions and don’t have such big voice yet to employ this message. Second, there are still details that can’t explain “kpop fans theory” like why she has cast or why is she crying not answering the phone. I think theory about dead friends story is more trustworthy just because it explains everything about previous details and others like her wearing black and at the end wearing bright colors.
Also, one of the girls asked “what are practicing today?” Doesn’t it mean that the girls are still rookies. If they would be idol group already, wouldn’t they have particular task to practice

@@mrn.w.a.6344 NJ is a new group but Min Hee-jin has been in the industry for ages and worked seen a lot of the dark side of kpop. As for her cast, she is literally seen waking backwards in a rooftop. Is not hard to imagine how she could end up being hurt. The call was from the boy, I thought that was very clear in the MV. Lastly, Min Hee-jin said, “The music video for the pre-release song ‘Ditto’, which will be released on the 19th, contains an unexpected story between Bunnies (official fan club name) and NewJeans”. Its obviously about fans and idols. Its sad that kpop stans always go for the craziest theories and refuse to see what is right in their faces.

I think this is definitely one plausible theory. However, I do think the other commenter above me may be onto something as well. With the Itaewon Halloween incident, there were some students/younger people who passed away. The girl in the video almost seems like she could be reminiscing friends who are no longer with her because they're gone, as the video does make it clear several times that they acknowledge her, say her name, and at points she IS physically with them. So she may be a grieving student reliving past memories, which is why her fellow students look at her with concern

not a critique necessarily because it isn't painted negatively just as a "slice of life " of a fan i guess at the end the girl is an adult and doesn't look at that part of her life with negativity or regret but with nostalgia and as a fond memory and i think all 1st and 2nd gen fans understand, you move on and everything becomes distant memories but sometimes you check out on your faves (if they're still alive or have a public life) or at the things you collected with that fondness

I feel like, regardless of what happened to the girls, it’s about loss, loneliness, letting go and moving on.

It really feels very sad, and I cried while watching the clip B. I agree that the story can be presented in different ways, I like each fan theory more and more. NewJeans has said that "Ditto" is a song for their fans and continues the 90's nostalgia vibe. Here is my theory (similar to others as well).
In the MV, "Heesoo" is a loner, kind of an outcast. Listening to Kpop, being a fan of NewJeans is her way of coping. She considers NewJeans as the friends she wanted to have. She imagines them as part of her reality. However, at some point, she moves from this stage in her life as she develops a relationship with the guy IRL. She then lets go of NewJeans and puts her memories of them away in a box. Years later, she opens the box and watches the video --- she remembers the time that she was a fan with fondness. The MV evokes a feeling of nostalgia -- how when we grow up, we look back at the group we liked and remember how they were a part of our life at one time.

I think that New Jeans and Heesoo were a friend group that got into a some kind of an accident and only Heesoo survived and got injured, there is ‘don’t die’ written on her cast. She is holding in to her friends through her video camera, refusing to admit that her friends are gone, everyone at school knows what happened but don’t want to deal with it and only the boy is concerned for her, hence always watching her and walking with her in the end. I think the deer also symbolizes acceptance and moving on. In the end she watches the real tape of her friends and remembers her time with them, no longer holding on.

I think I get this, and here is my theory. Heesoo and newjeans were best friends, they six were always together. Newjeans liked to dance, and Heesoo always did the filming work for them. But one day an terrible accident happened, newjeans the five girls didn't survive, only Heesoo survived and had her arm injured. Since that day, Heesoo went back to school on her own but always watching everything through that video recorder, because inside that recorder, she could still see her five friends talking and playing with her at school, and other classmates thought Heesoo is getting weird and crazy. At the end of the story, Heesoo grows up, and she can finally move on, but when she watched the old video of her five friends, she feels like it was just yesterday. 💔

The creative team that have been guiding New Jeans since debut has done a truly INCREDIBLE job. These girls are getting the absolute best support in terms of concept, songs, choreography, styling and "branding". The "Ditto" sides A & B are two absolutely incredible MVs in terms of the concept and artistry of the MV cinematography and direction. The wistful, melancholic and slightly haunting sound supports perfectly the message of the song. It was truly a stroke of inspiration to make this into two MVs, with both MVs needing to be viewed in order to gain the fuller, more deep meaning. The ending of Side A is so heartbreaking when it dawns upon the viewer the darkness that was obscured by the girl's vicarious joy she experienced through her imaginary friendship with New Jeans. For the second MV, the way I interpreted it, was that the girl finally realizes that it is unhealthy for her to live in an imaginary world in which the New Jeans girls are her imaginary friends, and she makes a painful decision to leave her imaginary world and to live in reality (she destroys the camera, walks with the boy, has relationship problems. etc.). That is also why the deer walks away in the corridor, as she no longer lives in a fantasy world. Then, years later the adult version of the girl returns to her childhood bedroom and reminisces about her past, including the happy memories of her passion for Kpop idols (symbolized by New Jeans). The girl (now a woman) is able to again let New Jeans back into her life in a healthy manner (with the 5 New Jeans girls happily reentering her room), as she is now more grounded and better able mentally to reap the benefits and enjoyment of Kpop without the unhealthy obsession that her less mature self fell into.

The girl's name, Ban Hee Soo, is a fun expression of bunnies' Korean pronunciation and symbolizes fans. Like a girl who watches members on a video camera, fans watch TV or UA-cam videos, and the boy represents real problems (academic, employment), and the wind and rain mean trials. They support each other, but in the eyes of those around them, idols are only seen as otaku. Throwing away the camcorder means quitting fan activities, and as Minji said, the scene of looking at the deer from afar expresses the distance between fan and idol. Just as news gins come true when playing video tapes later, this MV shows the relationship between fans and idols. , It's amazing that a 5-month-old rookie girl group released such a song and a music video, and this is something that other idols and fans can relate to!

I agree with the opinion that this could be a commentary on the parasocial relationships that form between fans and celebrities, but I actually read it as more of a commentary on what happens (primarily to girls) as we grow up. For a lot of people there comes a time when you feel like you need to shed pieces of yourself in order to "grow up," whether that's trying to fit in with people who don't understand you, or feeling like you need to behave or look a certain wait, etc. I think it happens most often to girls because there's this idea that you leave everything that represents your girlhood (i.e. your innocence) behind. Deer are often associated with innocence, and she cries as she watches the deer leave, it's the end of that time for her. I think this is the most obvious in side B because unlike with parasocial relationships New Jeans is sad as they're slowly watching her pull away and ultimately leave. When she leaves she walks away with her love interest, and ultimately she gives up who she was in order to be accepted, which yes is so incredibly sad and such a tragedy. I think it's something that is also so very relatable. I also loved that it showed her coming back when she's older, finding those old memories of herself, realizing they made her happy and she seems to "reunite" with what she lost. I love that there's a hopeful note at the end and again I also think that's something you realize as you leave young adulthood and enter full adulthood; ultimately, what matters the most is being truly happy and that means being your most authentic self.

They just did something to my art/lit student brain and I wanted to make a million different versions of what everything meant or paint the 'empty' quiet scenes. 2) Deer: to me, deer come as innocence, or it could also mean as a catalyst of a car accident(?).
    3) Black cat: in popular Korean culture superstition, the black cat is an omen, and it can see the dead.
    4) Blackboard drawing: again in popular Korean culture superstition, a ghost has no legs(maybe that is why she erased them?).

i saw somewhere that meeting a deer can represent having to come to terms with the present, when you're lost in the past
1- literal, there was 6 girls who had an accident, heesoo was the only survivor, shes pretending her friends are still with her but they sadly aren't, eventually meets the deer and comes to terms with it, gets with that boy she likes, comes back to their hideout as an adult and looks back on their memories fondly
2- representing the idol-fan relationship, the other people can't see it but she's using her liking of newjeans to get her through difficulties like breaking her arm, eventually grows out of them and goes on with her life, comes back as an adult to watch their mvs and thank them for getting her through that rough time

So I’m thinking, something tragic happened to her 5 friends and somehow she has survivor guilt and it plunged her into depression to a point where she imagines them still alive and doing their thing like they used to, thus we see her filming them but they are not really there. Until she saw a sign, maybe a message from her friends through seeing this deer that it is time for her to let go and move on. With that came the other video where maybe she is older, she takes out the VHS tape and we see her sitting on the couch watching her friends and just remembering their memories.

The deer: In korea, deer is kinda recognized as a sacred, mysterious animal that people can't easily catch. So the deer represent the subtle distance or relationship between the fans and the idol. Not too far, Not too close (Theres a phrase "You're like a deer/bambi" which means you are so precious, sacred, innocent, beautiful etc. So there are a lot of songs about using deer as a metaphor of a lover or a crush. Baekhyun's Bambi is a perfect example)
HeeSoo ignoring Minji's phone call: indifference to new jeans ( not catching up the latest songs or albums, not looking for their promotions or ig posts etc..)
Minji erasing Hee Soo's leg on the chalkboard: The idol wants their fans to stay with them forever. But actually, that is not up to the idols. Only fans can decide whether they want to be the fans of the idol or not. They can be indifferent to the idols anytime just like HeeSoo did to New Jeans.
you know, fangirling celebrities can be vain, empty since you can't really meet them or get to know them in reality. so when you face the reality, it may feel useless. And yet, New Jeans are aware of that, and they hope that the fans would keep the happy memories (while fangirling new jeans) real even if time passes( Or New Jeans are telling the fans like "I'll stay the same until then, so come back anytime")

Bang Hee Soo who is representing us bunnies, the camera showing newjeans is us fangirling-boying over them and thats why nobody else can see them apart from us and the other students thinking that we're weird. The deer represents good fortune and luck for your future (i think). And the part where Minji rubs off the legs of the chalk drawing is showing that we can go wherever we like, and nobody can force us to stay where we are put. Even if that means we're moving on from them.
If you got the chance to spend a couple of weeks or months with an idol just know they're completely two different people. One that is off the camera and another side which is on camera. They cannot guarantee that you'll stay forever so they'll try to be as default/normal as they can be, Idols are not a special kind of breed/race/entity, they are humans, and they try their hardest with alot of things.

I feel these two video represented a gril and her 5 imaginary friends that supported her during her lonely school years. In side B, it is even more clear that the 5 girls NJs does not exist however the guy from her school also started noticing her well being and being there for her. Eventually she also wants to leave NJs behind by smashing the camera, walking away from them into the rain with the guy. The deer leaving also symbolising she no longer reqires the help from god(NJs) Many years later, she revisited her belongs and memories, she still wish NJs could be real and thankful that they have helped her

As a Loona lore stan, I'm glad this came out. Just something to theorize about, with beautiful music and vocals. It's haunting and BEAUTIFUL. And it makes me happy in a sad way and fits my bittersweet mood due to the drama happening in my kpop world right now, as well as some drama in my personal life. New Jeans is what I need right now to keep me level at the moment. It's exactly what I need and I love the charm of these girls. Something about them makes me happy. I can't put my finger on it. But they climbed up to 3rd on my favorite kpop groups, behind Loona and Red Velvet.

The fanbase seems divided on two theories.
Option one: Ban Heesoo (Bunnie) is a fan who was really in love with her group, until real life happens (both romance and injury) which makes her forget about the silliness of being a fan. At the end, Heesoo pops in the VHS and remembers what it was like to be a fan and gets nostalgic.
Option two: Heesoo is the friend of New Jeans who always filmed them when they were at school. Some accident happens where Heesoo is injured but left alone. So she's been taking her camera with her replaying all the moments she had with her friends in the locations they were at. Only the boy in school sees how hurt she is, while everyone else doesn't know how to react. In the end, she throws away the camera because she's only hurting herself by living in the past and not moving on. That's why she's walking with the guy home, as he seems to have helped her.
Personally, I think option two is more desirable given the sadness/melancholy at which the videos are shot, but I won't discount the first one either. They are filmed to have ambiguity in them so interpretations are encouraged. I can see how Heesoo always looking through the camera at her friends can be seen as fans being close but separated from their idols, but also a girl not letting go of memories even if they are harming her. Hanging out with NewJeans could be seen as the fandom peppering her every day life vs Heesoo recalling memories. I think in both the guy is the anchor towards reality, and is the one who wants to help her. Being too obsessed with your fandom can make you miss out on real life, or else diving too much into the past and not healing over painful moments is destructive. So in both theories, he's trying to help her.
Regardless on what's "canon", a silly K-pop video is causing THIS much discussion from a fanbase who usual response to MVs are "Queens slay! lol". So I'm enjoying some deeper thought here. I'm glad NewJeans is not being pinned down and is trying to be more artistic.

    🔎Theory🔍
I believe that our cámara girl is a lonely girl, but one night walking alone she found a group of five girls(new jeans) dancing happily, she wanted to be happy just like them so she started to imagen if she has their friend (new jeans) at the point of taking video of the girls dancing creating a whole imaginary friend group of girls that just saw one night, as a way of coping with her loneliness, but also having a love interest .that in order to be with him she has to leave her imagination that kept her from socializing. getting rid of the cámara that kept her inside the her head
The cast on her arm Can mean that something happens that broke her (an accident or someone special leaving ) who knows the only thing we know is that her imaginary friends (new jeans) filled that void on her heart (painting a heart on her arm cast
I don’t explain or theorize the other stuff cuz I don’t know what to think

Watched this a couple of times since it got released.
What I think, is that the videos were before her friends died. They died, in what I think, was an accident, with her the only one surviving - hence having her cast the whole time. She still can't let go of the fact that she was the only one who survived that's why she keeps on doing what she does with her friends which is already worrying the people around her.
Then at some point, she is slowly accepting the fact that she can never bring back her friends, and what they had before - you see this when she starts going alone(and them just looking at her as she walks away), and even goes out with the guy.
I definitely agree with you that the song is really A BOP, well, all their songs have been lol. And intertwining the song with the music video is definitely a work of art.
I hope that they keep releasing these kinds of bops, no matter what genre they try to go to!

OMG. i think you got the main point from just looking at them once.
i think it's about the relationship between bunnies (if you say ban hee soo fast in Korean, it sounds like bunnies) between newjeans, more generally fandom and idols.
A : Bunnies selected NewJeans, decided to go with them, which helped her thru her hard times
B : Bunnies selected her real life but cherishes her memories with NewJeans later. the memories which helped her thru her hard times
By the way, the deer represents a thing that you want to go near but you cannot. if you approach her, she will run away. the relationship between idols and the fans.
One more thing, the song itself is an obvious love song dedicated by NewJeans to bunnies as indicated by NewJeans members.

The thing is while that totally makes sense and is probably correct, there still enough of an interpretation that you could make for the other theories. Also, there's many times where you'll read a book, listen to a song, watch a tv show/movie and while there might be an "official" explanation(from the author, etc.), it's still wide open enough to think about other theories. I think that's why I love both MV's.

I haven't quite wrap my thoughts around the story behind the two mv A and B. It appears that Heesoo was really close with the five friends and she use to film her friends interacting in school and also filming them dance. Heesoo also have feelings for boy at school. We also see that there was an accident and she's in an arm cast and the fact that the later part of both showed that she was alone in real life and during some of the recording scene symbolizes that her five friends must have died. The deer in both also reaffirms that. "Caught like a deer in the headlight" is a common phrase to mean paralyze by fear or indecision. Many deer died at night in car accidents when bright spotlight shine at them and they instinctively freezes rather than run away. We can assume her friends died but the deer could also explained that they died in the car accident that she was also in. So all that we see in A and B. Now what's different between A and B is that A was about her holding on to them in her thoughts even after the accident. We see that when it was raining she chose to walk with them in the rain instead of using the umbrella and her filming the school settings with them gone. While in B was about letting go, we see in the rain scene, she left on her own without her friends and we also see her drop the camcorder and later walking away with the boy. Perhaps the boy helped her to let go. The ending scene of B showed years later as she dusted off the VCR tape to watch it again. Here all the emotions of the past came rushing back as if it was just yesterday. Perhaps showing that life continues and we learn to accept but we never truly can let go.

Heres my theory that there was a huge accident the tragic deaths (mostly young) of 156 people caught in an Itaewon crowd which happened on Halloween day. A girl holding a camera would be an only survivor from that accident lost all of her besties and she cannot get out of the shock so strongly hold a delusion making up her friends still alive which is not true fact. Remembering those days warm gatherings with friends and cannot believe in a fact that they are all gone.
Watch 13:42 on your reaction, there are camera girl (only wearing school uniform summer clothes) and newjeans members (wearing school uniform winter clothes differs from the camera girl), which represents NJs members are imaginary friends who all suffered from the tragedy on winter time and the camera girl is an only one survived living a real life.
at the very last scene, seems the camera girl gets little older turns on the VHS again, shows that NewJeans members are not illusion. And seems the camera girl overcome the accidental memory but her friends still remains as a warm and bright memory.
I think the purpose of this MV could be mourning the Itaewon tragedy. Just my guess.

This song is about survivor's guilt. Heesoo and NewJeans members are friends but something tragic happens and Heesoo survives alone and the rest of friends are dead. At first, Heesoo can't accept the reality and they're still there in her imagination. That's why only she can see the members. The boy is the one who helps her to overcome her guilty. You can see she doesn't walk with the members but with the boys in the side B. And finally she can accept the reality and that's why she drops the camera from the rooftop. The deer represents the reality about the girls' death. That's why there's tear in Heesoo's eyes when she sees the deer. This is the combination of my thoughts and some people's. I hope you can understand the storyline. This is so tragic like you said.
