I purchased this machine 3 days ago. I could not be happier. It worked smoothly from the start. I read the very simple instructions, threaded the machine properly and it's been nothing but A+ since. Some of the stuff complained about...like needing to connect the USB to the machine is silly. This is a wonderful machine.
I am so pleased that the machine is working so well for you. Can you tell me what it is that you are embroidering and the thread you are using for the bobbin? Jan
Thanks for replying! Have been playing with the machine in embroidery for 2 days now, so far it's faultless. I'm newish to sewing, and already have a new Singer Confidence. It liked sulki thread and bobbin thread set on -2 for free motion, so I tried the same.
Thank you very much for your comment, and that did work on one of the occasions, when I happened to notice, as I had walked into the room, the project hadn't gone too far for the 6 stitch revers to work. You are quite right to point out the pages I need to refer to, however I have had many times when the machine has worked through to the end of the project with a broken thread! reversing would be far more than 6 -8 stitches you mention! Thanks Jan
I've had this machine for a few months now and love using it with very little problem, Just a few points, always use a quality bobbinfil thread (and only bobbinfil unless creating freestanding lace) in the bobbin, use a thread net for very "slick" top threads and there is no limit on how many backspaces that can be done with the reverse key. you can go right back to the beginning of the block if you wish, it mentions 6 to 8 stitches as this is usually the the most "stitched" when thread breaks before the machine stops (This detail is in the manual on page 76, last sentence in the reverse stitch button section) . You machine has a definite fault with the upper thread sensor as it cannot detect a thread break. as always RTFM!
Hi ya Jan , My first 24 hour s messing about with my singer xl 400 ... lol decided to tried a small hoop embroidery.... I did it with no messing about , no thread's breaking . But i did ran it on a slow med ... had the switch to the left side of the 'S '' for speed ..... Thanks to you smashing You Tube Video ....I did it ... Thank you Julie
Oh Thank you for this! I have had so many projects ruined, that I have now given up and haven't embroidered for ages! You have prompted me to have another go to see what happens and then if the thread breaks but it continues to stitch I will get it checked out. Jan
I know you uploaded this video 2 years ago but I have a couple of solutions for you. To keep the thread breaking like that, start on a very slow speed and once it has gotten started (about 20 stitches), you can speed it up. If you see a big gap where the thread broke without the machine stopping, just hold down the reverse stitch button until you get back to the spot it left off, rethread and hit the green button again.
Krissy Everett hi! Do you still have this machine. I’m having so much issues with it. I can use double needle. It creates tunnelling I’ve tried it on all tensions possible it does that and some bunching to make things worse. Also the zigzag stitch on a swimsuit material gives me a rippled effect. And of course there is no way to control the bobbin tension nor the footer pressure. What do I do ? 😓
so about the breakage, move the thread to the other stick end. the machine moves the thread better through the tension. using the thread on the far side only adds more tension that is not needed
OMG! this is exactly the same problems I've had, I purchased a future xl550 which cost me well over a £1400, wish I had kept my brother galaxy, can't find any real help so I am really glad I found you, didn't even get a instruction manual with mine,I was told you just plug it in to you PC and your away, what a load of rubbish that was, when I tried to use it I followed all the info they gave me still could get it up and running after sending loads of emails to anyone I could find to do with Singer I eventually got a email from America saying that "they had to wait for Microsoft permission to upgrade the softwear for windows 8" when I eventually got it going I still had problems and it had to go back which took another couple of week's, still cannot find any help or tutorial for the xl550, frustrating isn't the word, not a happy bunny, I hope I can get it going properly as it's a lot of money for something to be stuck in my cupboard, :(
Hi William I wish I could have found a review on this machine before buying it , I would never had wasted my money, Still hopefully people will see this review and save there money , do not buy this machine. Kind regards, jan.
Hello Jan. I just got a Singer Futura XL-420 for Christmas. I was using it to make a few Christmas gifts and I also had problems with the thread breaking, I called the store where I got it from and the lady said that it sounded like my thread was not on the tension disks. I am completely new to sewing and sewing machines so I had her explain to me what to do. She said that after I put the thread through the first thread guide and bring it down to the second thread guide, I needed to floss the thread back and forth (as if I was flossing my teeth) until I heard a flossing noise before putting it into the 3rd thread guide. I hope that helps with your problem. Also, I think another of my problems is that I forget to lift the presser foot before threading.
You can put the embroidery foot on without unscrewing the screw all the way. I use my left hand to lift the presser foot and my right hand to slip the embroidery foot into place. You have to slide it under the needle and bring it forward from the back! I hope that makes sense :) thanks for the video! I just got this machine today and your tutorials really helped!
Hi There, I recently purchased the Singer XL550. I too had a tremendous amount of issues when I first started using it. My thread seemed to break continuously. Although I typically had my thread spool in the horizontal mode, vs. vertical mode, I found out that by not using special net protectors while sewing was the main reason the thread would break. Additionally, I removed my front cap by the light. It seems that when that piece was on, quite often it would lead to the thread snapping.
I saw you pressing upward on the needle bar lever to get the hoop in and out of the machine, I just wanted you to know you you can use the presser foot lifter to achieve the same result, and you won't risk burning your fingers on the lightbulb. Happy sewing!
i know that this video was uploaded a while ago but i have the xl420 and have had thread breaks. i have expensive and cheaper threads. the solution i found was not to have the spool on the machine. i stand mine on the table next to the machine. hey presto no breaks on high speed with value ebay thread. so now i have a huge collection that i use all the time. make sure you the correct stabiliser and needle. now that i have mastered it i love this machine💐
I have the earlier version. I found the machine must have a quality bobbin thread. Additionally, when you thread the machine you must hear it click through all of the threading areas. Like you, I had to teach myself the ins and outs of the machine because there is little help out there. Singer did tell me to never use Coats and Clark bobbin thread, they suggested Gutermann. I hope you are having a better time. I have so enjoyed my machine, I am currently thinking about getting the new machine with the endless hoop. Best wishes.
I'm sorry you're having so many problems with this particular Singer Futura XL 400 machine. I was researching various sewing/embroidery machines since I want to start doing machine embroidery, and this one seemed solid when I saw one in the shop as I was looking at machines for purchase. Your advice in using the correct backing is noted. Thank you for posting this video, as I see what issues needs to be addressed by Singer. It's a shame you've had your project ruined by these problems. Hang in there and please keep me posted as to how you've fixed the problems/bought a new sewing/embroidery machine.
Oh flippen heck .... Yesterday was the first day of me messing with this trying to embroider a little flower lol.... Heckie peck .... Sewing for me is dead easy I've been doing it since I was 12...but this it a totally new ball game ..... Thank you for your video I'm sure I will be back to watch it again .... I did pick up a few things i did wrong like not dropping the feed dogs , and not changing the foot ..Tar Julie in Canada ...
Hi Julie, I had a useful comment a while ago about choosing a specific thread for the bobbin, and I am sorry but I cannot recall what it was! If you look back through the comments you may find the one I am referring to and also others associated with getting the machine to embroider!! I still haven't had the courage to go back to using the embroidery arm! Thanks and good luck Jan
I bought this machine on Friday, January 2nd. Within 30 minutes I had the software loaded and was sewing, quilting and embroidering with no problems whatsoever. It is the coolest machine I've ever worked on. I think your problems were user error and lack of proper stabilizing knowledge. I have not had one problem yet and I've been using it continuously since Friday. Not frustrating one bit.
Tina Roberts Pleased to hear you are having no problems, it is still a lovely machine. I plan to do a follow up video now I have owned it 2 years. Jan.
Hi I have been embroidering for 15+ years and I have taught Janome and Brother machines to new owners, I have never laid hands on your brand machine but I am amazed that you machine is stitching at all with you using top thread as the bobbin thread. Every machine is thread pickey and they dont all have the same preferances, I have a janome that loves Robinson Anton and wont touch a cheap thread and a brother that prefers the cheap one and also PR600 6 needle that refuses to even stitch the metallic i use on both of the other machines. One thing all 3 have in common though is I know I would not get any results from any of my machines with the upper thread being used as a bobbin thread, again you need a quality one, I would think your bobbin is causing your nesting issues and top thread breaking because top machine thread is very different to bobbin thread and is causing tension issues. I always use a quality one and prefer the thin monofilament as you get a lot more on the bobbin so its less rewinding. Robinson Anton is a great thread you certainly shouldn't be getting any issues with that if your tensions are set correct, the cheap unbranded ones from e bay are the ones that would normally give you problems. Coates thread has also been mentioned, for embroidery I never got good results and Guttermann has also been mentioned thats also a quality thread and my threads are all RA or Guttermann now. Are you using the correct needle for embroidery as that can also have a bad effect on the thread, sometimes you can get a better result by using a metallic needle even with regular thread Iron on backing is always best as you cant stretch items as you are getting them in the hoop that causes many problems. You also mentioned software, Check out Embird with the font engine plug in which will do any font. and I only found this looking for some more halogen cooking tips lol!
I recently bought this machine and had problems with the small hoop, however I rang the number that came with the machine. I actually rang too early but they took a message for the person who deals with the problems and she came back to me within an hour so I can't fault their service. Still having a play with the machine as I'm totally new to using a machine for embroidery.
Another tip for you I have discovered after struggling to fit the hoop. Pull the hoop in from the BACK of the machine with the lifter foot up - this raises the embroidery foot without having to lift the little handle and get pricked fingers!
I also had thread breakage a lot when I first started. Figured out I was not threading the machine correctly AND I slowed the speed down when I started embroidering a design. Hasn't happened in a LONG time. Hope this helps!
I found that if you use any kind of polyester embroidery thread is what you need. Plus I use a 90 weigh white bobbin thread. Also another great thing to have is Sew What Pro Program for your embroidery.
Hi after watching you embroid you have to hold the thread to the back of your machine start to embroid after 8 to 10 stitches you trim the cotton of or it will snap your thred hope this workes for you it worked for me thankyou
If the thread breaks during the embroidery you do NOT have to abandon the project! Simply rethread the machine with the current colour, and then use the 'reverse' button' to move the machine back about 6- 8 stitches (it moves back one stitch each time you hit it) and then press start. It'll start from that point in the design and you shouldn't have any gaps. (this is on pages 76 and 82 of the manual). Hope that helps!!
Hi I wonder if you could help me. I've recently purchased a Futura XL400. When I tried the tutorial design flower, it embroided really fast. However when I tried to do my own design with AutoPunch it stitches really slow even though the speed slider is set to maximum? Thanks.
Hello. I own 3 of these machines and I love them and they are work horses. I noticed a few mistakes. First, when I start my projects, start with the speed lever at the slowest speed. While the machine stitches the first few stitches, I also put my finger on the thread near the spool to keep tension on it. After a few stitches pause the machine by pushing the start button. Now clip excess thread. Push the start button again to resume stitching. When the thread breaks,The project is not destroyed. The machine simply goes into pause mode. So replace the thread, and use the back up button. I go back about 10 stitches and resume with no problems. I am always at my machines watching what's going on. The #1 reason for me why thread breaks is thread binding up on the spool. That's why I always keep a finger on my thread to make sure there is never a bind. I do custom embroidery work on football jerseys and company logos on jackets and so forth. These machines keep working and require little maintanance.
Hi I have the brother pe770 and I had this same problem with mine when I first started embroidery. I found that my backing was too thick. When your only doing embroidery you only need a stabilizer that doesn't iron on. When you do appliqués you need bond lite. The stickier the backing the more it rubs the thread and breaks it. Try using backing paper that you don't iron on. If you are appliquéing then use bond lite. Remember the stickier the backing the more it's gonna eat your thread. Hope this works.
hi, love the video, i would like to add a few things to your experience list. i am a newbie to embroidery machines and only have a basic "old style" forward and back track machine, i have used this machine under 1 week now and found all your problems and more but some fixes that stand out are;
I've since used my other techniques and have sewed numerous items (both knit and cotton). I hope you are able to master some of the problems with your machine. On a side note, the machine before this one was my Brother Innovis 1500, which never gave me a lick of problems like this Singer machine. :-(
I have the xl400. I had lots of these issues. Many of them I went back and read the instructions again. It is very important to do the set up or start up the same everytime. If not you end up with all kids of odd things. The set up is this. I find my pattern get it set on the screen and all ready to sew. Then I set up the fabric in the hoop. Turn off your sewing machine. Insert the hoop. Turn on the sewing machine. Remove the nag screen that says you have to have the sewing machine on. Now I send the pattern. Always send the pattern to a freshly started sewing machine. In this video you see a common problem. It is more a problem with the pattern then the sewing machine. She sends the pattern. It makes it first stich in the center then it makes a very long run to the front left side and poof needle brake. Check your pattern. Anytime you have a long run edit the pattern and add some intermedete stich. Patterns are not perfect. This is an issue with the digitizer and not the sewing machine. With a multinedle machine this is not a problem. With a single needle machine it is. You can edit it and add a stich jump or look at the pattern and when you change color if there is going to be a long jump first thing I pull out the thread needed ahead of time if I can't or did not edit the patern. These 2 things will remove 95% of all your problems. Singer will tell you it is critical that you start with your machine off and then incert the hoop then turn on the sewing machine. If you don't do this everytime you will have problems. Simple rule. Know your pattern before you sew. It will sew with any thread.
I was just getting ready to purchase this machine. I'd been considering the Brother 770 but this appears to have a larger stitch area than the Brother. But all the tension issues have me spooked. I'm a beginner and really need something user friendly.
Belinda Hutchings Hi Belinda, I've so struggled myself with the Singer Futura and only just seem to have gotten the hang of tension, bobbin fill etc. I've heard very good reports about the Brother machines and if you look at the thread of conversation you will notice that many people have said how much easier the Brother machines seem to be. However I have not used a Brother machine so cannot compare. I also consider myself a novice in this area. Are you able to visit a shop that sells both machines and compare them yourself and see what suits you? Good luck, let me know if you purchase a Brother as there are occasions when I have considered selling the Futura and trying the Brother, however costs always go against the idea!! Jan
The only shop I've visited that has embroidery machines specializes in Husqvarna, which is far out of my budget. I think I'm going to go ahead with the Brother 770 and see how that goes. :) It used to be that Singer was a "go to" brand, I'm sad to see so many problems with it.
Thank you for your video! I was considering the Singer Futura XL400, but after seeing frustrating issues you had, I've nixed Singer from my list. Thanks for saving me from having to deal with all those issues you had!!
Thickness of thread to needle and AGE! of the thread if not 100% polyester as i have found cotton can degrade and break easy even by hand. If you catch the thread snap you can use the "reverse" button next to start/stop to go back, very handy as it has been known to do 8 or so stiches before it stops
Mine stops immediately if the thread breaks! It stops if bobbin runs out. I use Madeira thread all the time. I did do two things that helped keep the thread from breaking, and the thread from nesting. First I lowered the tension as low as it would go, and then threaded "Waxed dental floss" through the thread guides. I pulled the waxed floss back, and forth a few times. I haven't any problem with nesting since I started making sure that I pulled the bobbin thread to the top, before starting embroidering. Singer didn't advise me to do the waxed floss, but a friend of mine, that owns a Bernina used this technique, and it worked for her. I also read through my manual several times before I started.
Those thread choices in the software are just there so you can match colors exactly with the brand you have on hand. They are not "recommended" by anyone, Just the popular readily available brands. When you pick a font, you have to take note of the size that is recommended for that font. They are digitized for a size range, or else they will not sew up well. If the columns of stitches are too wide, you will have loops, if too small, you will have puckers and thread breaks. There is a involved
My thread would break also. Singer said just drop the top thread in a mason jar placed behind the machine, and this worked. The thread stopped breaking.
I can change my presser feet without removing the screw. If you lift the presser foot lever as high as it will go with your right hand and hold it, you can slip the lever over the top then slide the embroidery foot shank under the loosened screw. Most of the problems I've had with my machine were user error and required some practice to get the hang of it. There are also some idiosynchrocies that just require figuring out. I read that you must follow the instructions exactly as written but some things just weren't emphasized enough. For embroidery: 1) You must use the correct stabilizer. 2) A better needle is less likely to break. 3) When you thread the machine, "floss" it in the top (first) groove. If your thread breaks, your needle breaks or comes unthreaded, take the opportunity to re-thread the machine. Don't pull the thread from the back of the needle too tightly or it will break. It's much easier to start the threading process from the beginning. 4) Use the thread nets. I find that turning my mini cones "backwards" and using a large cap helps keep the thread from wrapping around the spool holder and helps with the tension. Most of the time when my thread snaps, it's because it's wrapped around the spool holder. 5) Start slowly when starting a design or changing thread. When the needle moves from one area to another and covers a large space, your thread gets tight and is more likely to break the needle. So I set on the lowest speed and stop the needle at the first stitch. Then I let it run at a slow speed, gradually increasing to a higher speed. 6) If your embroiderer seems to have short-circuited (the design is not stitching as expected), check for dust or debris in the ports (machine and embroidery attachment). Use canned air to clean them out and always close the door on the port when not in use. Also check to make sure your embroidery attachment is tightly connected to your machine. You might need to give it a little push. 7) Never change the size of your design by dragging the edges of the pattern. Always use the resizer function. 8) If you hold the back stitch button until it beeps, it will back up all the way to the beginning of your design. When you get to the point where your thread broke, simply hit the stop/start button. To make sure you are in the correct spot, lower the needle by manually turning the wheel forward. If you need to back up just a tad, push the back up button and release. If you go back too far, I don't know any way to move forward without actually stitching unless you remove the thread. Eventually the machine will stop bc there is no thread so you might have to repeat the process to get to the correct point. I've had my machine for 2 months and I'm really enjoying it. I've made about 30 projects during that time, including appliques, monograms, designs, etc.
+Danita Munday I read your review - thank you for taking the time. I am new to the XL-400 and am having trouble with it. Worked great for 2 projects then it started nesting, not picking up the bobbin thread. Any place to find additional information. Something is wrong with the tension. TIA
Thank you for a wonderfully honest video. Not a good advert for the Singer Futura LX400! I have a Janome and a Brother embroidery machine, neither of which, thankfully, has any of the significant faults of your machine. So far as thread breaking is concerned, have you tried using a spool stand or even standing the spool in a mug/jar positioned just behind and to the right of the machine? Ideal for machines which are fussy about the thread they use. Once again, thank you. Marion UK
I just ordered this machine yesterday for embroidery. It was given to me as a very special gift. Your video has ruined my day. Especially since I had been about to buy a brother dedicated embroidery machine. Did you ever get your machine to work properly?
storyteller3927 Sorry to tell you this but no, I just use it as a sewing machine only. Still my machine is a couple of years old now so perhaps they have ironed out all the problems now.
Aria Clements Thank you for taking the time to comment! I've been feeling pretty low about it. But I have to say that so far, I'm pleased with it. It really is an incredible invention. Although it has 'nested' around the bobbin once, I believe it was because of the thread that I used. It clearly doesn't like cheap thread... Thanks again
I have just ordered this singer xl400 .... oh my goodness .I've never done Embroidered any thing on the machine ...I make quilts I'm hoping this machine will do what I want to do....Have you tried free motion quilting on this machine ? Thank you for a smashing demo .... I can't wait to get cracking ....
dereton33 According to the manual in my Futura Quintet it is REQUIRED. I tried not using it and I experienced exactly what you did: - random tread break somewhere during the project. As soon as I install bobbinfil with no additional changes the problems disappear. Hopefully, this will solve your problem as well.
Ok thanks Kevin , I will give it a go. My machine is the Futura , and not quintet and it says nothing about using bobbinfil in my manual. Also when speaking to the customer service team they mentioned nothing about using this thread to fix the problems I was having. Jan.
The E setting on the tension is simply a setting of 3. So if your thread is breaking it would make sense there is too much tension. Get some test fabric and and go crazy testing lower tension settings. Also, I just found this suggestion in your manual: NOTE: When sewing designs created by the software for Photo Stitch (optional) it is recommended to decrease the thread tension toward “0” and activate the “Speed limiter”, by checking the box in Machine navigator, before sending the design to the machine. This ensures the best performance of the machine Your tread may work fine if you loosen the tension a bit more - since you noted setting it slightly below the E setting helped somewhat I am betting going down even more might just fix your thread breakage problem. At least I hope it will.
Putting hoops on you can push the foot raiser arm higher for ease; Breakages when machine moves distance, the needle isnt in the up position totally as it pulls the tension is too great (found lower than E works best too)
I have the 450 . . same issues -- I use it for just a sewing machine now . . using the embroidery side of the machine -- the timing continued to go out - at 129.00 a pop for repair - not to mention having to ship it to Atlanta GA for repair -- it was 100.00 a pop for shipping as well - as there was no local dealer for warrenty repair *ugh*~ -- so, I purchased a brother PE 770 and I am pleased with that machine for embroidery only -- send me a email if you want to know where to get the biggest and best deal on the Brother PE 770
Thanks Marie , I thought it might just have been my machine . I have lost all intrest in any more machines but thank you for your tip. Kind regards, jan.
I just bought the seqs 6700 im waiting for it to come in mail are they Big Machines I seen at walmart they have regualar sewing machines that look like the machines shape and are not big so im assuming this will be same size but longer if I had thr embroidery arm on ? Or is It huge lol
Two things here about thread breaking: No 1 Always bring the bobbin thread up do not just leave it in the Channel after you insert a new bobbin,, No 2 you can back up the machine to pick back up where the thread broke off at by using the reverse button if you just need to back up a few stitches just push it a few times, but by holding the button in for several seconds you can release it and it will continue to back up or reverse on the design until it goes back to the beginning or you push the Start/Stop button
+Mark Payne Thank you for this. Unfortunately my machine likes to continue for a long time before telling me the thread has broken!! Too far back to keep going back on the stitching!! Thank you for you help though. Thanks for watching Jan
If you have wide area to cover in one colour seriously dont think about embroidery, cut some felt/cotton fabric etc to the shape do a fine bead around the edge to show where to line up, hold in place, do a bead to hold it on, then do a 2-4mm border around the edge to secure it, this will stop nesting, saves on thread, easier for machine to sew through if you need to do letters or fine detail. You could also put padding behind to create a 3D effect when stitched inside
nells bells Yes! I've discovered that if you keep on pushing the button to go back it will keep going back to where the thread broke, it depends if it has continued to sew for too long and this makes it tricky to do, jan
Only 1 thought - saw all your frustration and was wondering if you put your spool in the other place and try embroidering from that spool position. Good luck...
Dianna Fuller Hi Dianna, yes I've done it all with the bobbin!!! All good now though as I have discovered bobbinfil!! Thank you for taking the time to get in touch Jan
dereton33 Tell me more about the bobbinfill- I am interested as I should be getting my machine any day now. Scheduled to arrive April 4, 2015 - keeping my fingers crossed - thank you...
Dianna Fuller Hi Dianna, I've discovered, by trial and error, that Maderia Bobbinfil is the what to use when you embroider. You can get it on bobbin spools ready for use or buy it by the reel and put it onto the bobbin the same as you would with any thread. It comes in white or black and does not show through. If it does show through then the tension on the machine is wrong. The book that comes with the Singer is helpful with this. I use Robison embroidery thread for top stitching as I like the sheen on them. Good luck with your new purchase. Jan
Kool - I have ordered 80 spools plus 2 bobbin filled spools of Maderia along with 2 white spools. Hopefully I should be all set when everything gets here - early this week. I am really excited and cannot wait to get started. I also was able to get the extra software that usually costs hundreds of dollars - for mere pennies - the discs are used - but guaranteed - so I can hardly wait. Thank you for all your help and information. Have a wonder Easter...
to fit the foot - the lift lever goes up HIGHER to allow fitting without taking the screw out - so when you lift the foot CONTINUE lifting the lever and voila! - hope this helps! Im a man but I do sewing lol! My other half cant get the hang of it!
HELLO I AM INTERESTED IN THE MACHINE Singer XL 400 Futura embroidery machine QUISERO KNOW IF IT COMES WITH THE CD SOFTWARE INCLUDED AN INVESTMENT OR IF YOU HAVE TO DO THAN ONE?...
HI Can anyone tell me if a embroidered logo or name can be put onto t.shirts or sweat shirts on the singer embroidery machine or can you only do towels bibs blankets ect as I was wondering how the garment would be slipped around the machine. thanks :-)
Hello, I'm asking on behalf of my mother. When she attaches the embroidery unit to sewing unit: 1: the lighting panel lights up, then dies and doesn't respond to button-pressing 2: the 'start/stop' button when pressed remains red, not turning green. Any ideas welcome, thanks.
Yes Jan I fix aircraft and when I left the forces I did a chefs course ! Im now treating myself to a smaller version of yours to made aircraft patches :) Im still an engineer now at Heathrow, you are very talented! So what thread do you recommend? My local sewing shop have Guterman which I always use for hand sewing but you mention Madeira?
Vladimir Payback Hi Vladimir, you sound very talented yourself too!!! The thread I use is robison-anton, I really like the shine on it, Please use Madeira bobbinfil. Good luck! Jan
Hi Vladimir, If you use Bobbinfil it prevents nesting. The guage of needles depends on the material you are using and if you are embroidering the stabilizer can make a difference. So for lightweight use size 11, medium size 14 etc....Enjoy your purchase. Jan
Many things go into a thread break. Dull needle, needle not facing forward, tension wrong, burr on needle or plate, old or weak or dry thread, bobbin not in right. This is why embroidery is hard and takes a long time to learn. Even the stitch lengths in the design can contribute to breakage. I hope I am helping in some way.
Ive had my first attempt at embroidery but the bobbin just nests all the time! I have replaced the bobbin holder as that was damaged (its a second hand machine) and tried various things even using bobbin fill. It was obviously sold as it doesnt sew properly so it can go in the skip! Not happy :( Even nests just doing straight stitching - I knew should have bought Brother!!!
I purchased this machine a few years ago. My problem is that I recently purchased a MAC laptop and the Installation CD is compatible only with the PC Windows software. Is there an installation CD for this machine compatible with a MAC computer? If not how do I install this CD on my MAC. I can't use my dowloaded embroidery design without the installation CD.
PLEASE DO!!! im only had this as a theroy when i sent this, (my theroys usually are correct) and to date i done tons of youtube videos and many do this, i think they call the spelling as applique said as ap-plee-kay. i have orderd fabrics to try this as i struggled with embroidery the patch i need as so much stitching
In this video she did not do what the book said. With the sewing machine off insert the hoop your going to use then turn on the sewing machine. She has already set up for failure. You will have issues that are not even listed. This step is a must every time on every patter. Machine off insert hoop machine on.
I really really wish I had not bought this machine! I too got it mainly for embroidery, my first time. And I am having the same issues you are.. Also every time I embroider (on a brand new machine...) the bobbin thread is set too loose and comes up in every single attempt! I checked in the book and it says "The bobbin tension has been set correctly at the factory, so you do not need to adjust it." Whatever!!! lol but alas I have not found anything on how to adjust the tension.. I really think If I could get that fixed it might work and I can finally get it going. Have you found a way or encountered this problem?
Hi just wondering would this machine be able to change the format so it could sew Disney character or would we have to buy brother please help me and my mum:-)
I use MOON form my local market hall. I get a deal because I buy lots at a time, 1000m per bobbin, x 24 = £20. NEVER snaps yet she says embroiderers hate them. METALICS....turn the speed down to half and ALWAYS use the little hair net provided, and the horizontal bobbing holder my metalics never snap this way (I call top thread "bobbin", under neath thread I call a "spool"
I'm wondering now that you had this over a year, how it's going? Singer is owned by the same holdings company as Husqvarna Viking so if you can't get in touch with Singer, I'd contact HV and see if they have a number to refer you to. I bought a HV machine and the process is so much simpler, but the cost is much more. The support from the dealers is worth a mint though. I also only a Brother machine and it is simpler than the Singer to learn. Honestly, I don't think I can recommend any Singer machines, they just aren't what they used to be. That said, I would recommend loosening tension a little, use Bobbinfil thread for the bobbin when embroidering. Only use the regular thread in embroidery when making Free Standing Lace. Also, if possible, when starting a new embroidery, slow the machine down for the first few stitches. Sometimes if it moves too quickly, it ends up pulling the thread back out of the fabric and then it tells you to check thread. By beginning slower, it may not pull as hard on the thread when starting and so the stitches should stay in place. Once it's tacked down more, then you can speed up the machine. I'm hoping the singer has that ability, HV and Brother do... and it helps. When you do get a thread break, the machine should stop. The fact it's not stopping makes me think something is wrong with your machine. But normally it will stop, and after rethreading, then you should reverse to go back a few stitches that got skipped. Most machines say to reverse about 8-10 stitches, I usually go back about 15. In any case, I think your difficulties, some are just learning errors, but some are the frustrations of that particular machine and software. I hope you didn't give up :) You may find it much easier and more enjoyable on a higher end machine.
Hi Melissa, the sewing machine is still amazing but I have lost heart with the embroidery! I shall try your suggestion of using Bobbinfil thread, and loosening the tension, thank you. Yes there is a facility to slow the machine down and I have tried that, but if the thread breaks it continues way past a few stitches making it impossible to go back on your work and as the thread keeps breaking it has meant that I have given up with embroidery work. I shall look up HV as you suggest to see if there is any support for me from them, thank you again for taking the time and effort to write. Jan
I'm sad to hear that! But I completely understand! I have a husqvarna viking machine myself, and had a problematic machine, finally got them to replace it after 8 months. With a working machine, embroidery is a fantastic hobby and very addicting. but with a bad machine, it is a nightmare. i'm not familiar with the singer models much, but if there's anything i can do to help, i'd be glad to (not that i know a lot). is that machine supposed to have a warning bell for thread breaks? mine does. it's supposed to stop when that happens and wait to continue till you fix it. that's very frustrating when you can go back to where it broke though. I run a facebook group for the husqvarna machines, we might not know your machine well, but you're welcome to join us, someone might be helpful. :) There might be a singer group too somewhere ... facebook.com/groups/1454806388107000/
I run a business from home and have 7 embroidery machines, 2 commercial units (Meistergram 1500 Pro, and Melco EMC 6), 2 Brother 400's, a Brother 700II, a Brother 770, and a Singer Furura XL550. The Singer is poorly designed all around when compared to my Brother machines. The Brothers have better self-threading, better bobbin winding, they are more quiet, and they take even the cheapest thread with virtually no breaks. They do not have to be plugged into the computer while running, the included design software is superior, and my 2 Bother 400s each probably have 30-40 million stitches run thru them (hows that for durability?) I got the Singer used for VERY cheap. Know I know why. Singer is no longer an American company, and the quality is not the same that your grandmother enjoyed.
The spool of thread on the verticle spool pin is wrong. The spool of RA thread is too heavy and should be placed on the horizontal spool pin. When a heavy spool of thread is in the verticle position and the machine drags from one area to the next in the embroidery frame, the weight of the spool of thread pulls the needle and cause thread breaking and also needle breaking. I have found this through trial and error just like yourself. So I feel your frustration. Remember.. When you lift the presser foot and pull the thread, if it does not pull easily and has drag then you need to change to the horizontal spool pin. I have found Sulky small spools of thread to be light weight and when I use them on the horizontal spool pin I never have any thread breaks.
This machine will reverse back to where you want to begin stitching, sort of like a bookmark on the page you were reading. Just reverse it slowly.... My other Futuras would stop sewing when the thread was broken and it would beep. I hope this newer version has the same beeping....There is a Park feature in the manual for changing the bobbin thread in the middle of a design, without losing your place. On a side note, my Futura 350 had a tiny hole on the hand wheel and a spoon of thread was sitting on the table near the machine. It magnetically sucked up the thread and made a wig under the top cover and melted the machine. I read where this happened to another seamstress, so please keep the surface of your area clean. My Futura 250 was better than the 350 and didn't give me problems, until one day in the middle of a perfect design it started up a grinding noise and I smelled a burning or melting of the wires. A word to the wise, the machine is plastic and will melt, never leave it on unsupervised, come back into the room frequently.
Check on HSN.com They show tips on using the Singer Futura XL 400. One of the tips that might help is when you start the embroidery let it stitch 6 to 8 times stop then trim the thread and continue. Hope this helps
I'm having problems with the software installation. It keeps saying to make sure the machine is on and the USB is connected, anyone else have this problem??
Oh my - if your machine continues to stitch after the thread breaks then it has a fault that you should have repaired. Definitely get it checked out. The machine should always always stop stitching -- and promptly -- if the thread breaks or runs out (top or bottom).
I just wanted to stop by and thank you for taking the time to make this video. I followed along with your steps and achieved excellent results.
Glad it helped!
Thanks Jan
I've had this machine for a few months now and love using it with very little problem,
Just a few points, always use a quality bobbinfil thread (and only bobbinfil unless creating freestanding lace) in the bobbin, use a thread net for very "slick" top threads and there is no limit on how many backspaces that can be done with the reverse key. you can go right back to the beginning of the block if you wish, it mentions 6 to 8 stitches as this is usually the the most "stitched" when thread breaks before the machine stops (This detail is in the manual on page 76, last sentence in the reverse stitch button section) . You machine has a definite fault with the upper thread sensor as it cannot detect a thread break.
as always RTFM!
Hi Tony, many thanks for your comments, they are most useful. I will try the bobbinfil. Jan
Hi ya Jan ,
My first 24 hour s messing about with my singer xl 400 ... lol decided to tried a small hoop embroidery....
I did it with no messing about , no thread's breaking . But i did ran it on a slow med ... had the switch to the left side of the 'S '' for speed .....
Thanks to you smashing You Tube Video ....I did it ...
Thank you Julie
No problem all the best Julie .
Regards,
Jan.
@@101Falak do u still have this machine?
so about the breakage, move the thread to the other stick end. the machine moves the thread better through the tension. using the thread on the far side only adds more tension that is not needed
OMG! this is exactly the same problems I've had, I purchased a future xl550 which cost me well over a £1400, wish I had kept my brother galaxy, can't find any real help so I am really glad I found you, didn't even get a instruction manual with mine,I was told you just plug it in to you PC and your away, what a load of rubbish that was, when I tried to use it I followed all the info they gave me still could get it up and running after sending loads of emails to anyone I could find to do with Singer I eventually got a email from America saying that "they had to wait for Microsoft permission to upgrade the softwear for windows 8" when I eventually got it going I still had problems and it had to go back which took another couple of week's, still cannot find any help or tutorial for the xl550, frustrating isn't the word, not a happy bunny, I hope I can get it going properly as it's a lot of money for something to be stuck in my cupboard, :(
Hi William I wish I could have found a review on this machine before buying it , I would never had wasted my money, Still hopefully people will see this review and save there money , do not buy this machine.
Kind regards,
jan.
Hi Krissy thank you very, very much!! Jan
Thank you for this - I agree with you- if there had been a review last April I would NOT have bought the futura either! Thank you for sharing this
Thanks Sandra for your comments.
Kind regards,
Jan.
Hi Kendra Mae, thanks for this, yes it worked!! well done!! Jan
Great upload! Thank you for showing us the actual embroidery process in action!
KevKevAllen Thank you. Jan.
i know that this video was uploaded a while ago but i have the xl420 and have had thread breaks. i have expensive and cheaper threads. the solution i found was not to have the spool on the machine. i stand mine on the table next to the machine. hey presto no breaks on high speed with value ebay thread. so now i have a huge collection that i use all the time. make sure you the correct stabiliser and needle. now that i have mastered it i love this machine💐
Mary Elizabeth jaquay Thanks Mary.Jan.
I have a Pfaff and was told not to use Coats and Clark thread, but I do and it works wonderfully.
Barbara Lies I used Coats and Clark thread to embroider/quilting on mine and it works great as well.
Good luck with yours, I sold my machine some while ago. I never managed to fix all the problems with it.
For the knit material try ironing tender touch on the back of the material by sulky. It has worked wonders for me!
Are you using the correct needle for embroidery as that can also have a bad effect on the thread, sometimes you can get a better result by using a metallic needle even with regular thread
Iron on backing is always best as you cant stretch items as you are getting them in the hoop that causes many problems.
You also mentioned software, Check out Embird with the font engine plug in which will do any font.
and I only found this looking for some more halogen cooking tips lol!
I'm using coats and clark polyester thread top and bobbin and its working great.
Thank you for a very comprehensive look at this machine! I would have liked to see the completion though!
Thanks Cindy.Jan.
I found that if you use any kind of polyester embroidery thread is what you need. Plus I use a 90 weigh white bobbin thread. Also another great thing to have is Sew What Pro Program for your embroidery.
Thanks Debbie.
Thanks.
Sorry Jono I never had that problem so dont know what could be wrong.
You do have to be there to make sure that the thread doesn't snap or if anything goes wrong? You can stop it and prevent your project being damage.
Thankyou so much for getting back to me fab video covers so much information keep them coming as you learn more things on this machine Becky
Ok Rebecca.Jan.
Thank´s so much, for Your marvelous demonstrations! The Singer Futura 420 possesses and is very happy. Many greetings, Eve from Germany
Jörg Starrost No problem, Jan.
Thanks Lindsey I will give it a go.Jan.
hi, love the video, i would like to add a few things to your experience list. i am a newbie to embroidery machines and only have a basic "old style" forward and back track machine, i have used this machine under 1 week now and found all your problems and more but some fixes that stand out are;
I've since used my other techniques and have sewed numerous items (both knit and cotton). I hope you are able to master some of the problems with your machine. On a side note, the machine before this one was my Brother Innovis 1500, which never gave me a lick of problems like this Singer machine. :-(
Hoop size is smarller then embroidery data. Attach appropriate hoop and restart
Belinda Hutchings Yes well good luck with it. Jan.
Thank you for your video! I was considering the Singer Futura XL400, but after seeing frustrating issues you had, I've nixed Singer from my list. Thanks for saving me from having to deal with all those issues you had!!
You have made the right decision , if I new what I know now I would never have bought it.
Kind regards,
jan.
Thank you so much for this! I am eager to give it a go, I'll report back. Jan
Thickness of thread to needle and AGE! of the thread if not 100% polyester as i have found cotton can degrade and break easy even by hand.
If you catch the thread snap you can use the "reverse" button next to start/stop to go back, very handy as it has been known to do 8 or so stiches before it stops
I found your video helpful. The mistakes you made will help me and I appreciate you sharing them.
No problem Veronica .Jan.
Thanks for the helpful info.
Well I thought you were very funny , and I did the adjustment on tension and it has helped so much ! Thank you .
No problem Teri.
Regards,
jan.
Marion
UK
I will try your suggestions.
Thanks Jan.
If it helps, I've had no problem with my Futura.

Hi Julie , no I have never tried free motion quilting so good luck with it .
Jan.
Did you use "bobbinfil" thread in the bobbin as required?
No ,do you think that would help.
I will give it a go.
Thanks ,
jan.
dereton33 According to the manual in my Futura Quintet it is REQUIRED.
Also, I just found this suggestion in your manual:
NOTE: When sewing designs created by the software for
Photo Stitch (optional) it is recommended to decrease
the thread tension toward “0” and activate the “Speed
limiter”, by checking the box in Machine navigator, before
sending the design to the machine. This ensures the best
performance of the machine
Your tread may work fine if you loosen the tension a bit more - since you noted setting it slightly below the E setting helped somewhat I am betting going down even more might just fix your thread breakage problem. At least I hope it will.
Thanks Kevin I will give it a go.
Regards,
jan.
Putting hoops on you can push the foot raiser arm higher for ease; Breakages when machine moves distance, the needle isnt in the up position totally as it pulls the tension is too great (found lower than E works best too)
If you lower your tension and use only embroidery needles u can use any embroidery thread just trial and error with the tension I found
I will give it a go thanks,
Jan.
Kind regards,
jan.
I just bought the seqs 6700 im waiting for it to come in mail are they Big Machines I seen at walmart they have regualar sewing machines that look like the machines shape and are not big so im assuming this will be same size but longer if I had thr embroidery arm on ? Or is It huge lol
Adam Beck Yes it is quite big, have fun with it though and enjoy . Jan.
Oh my god .. I went to pick it up at post office .. they said they were trying to find a dolly lol I didnt expect that big
Is there not a way to go back to where the thread originally broke to keep from having to start over?
nells bells Yes! I've discovered that if you keep on pushing the button to go back it will keep going back to where the thread broke, it depends if it has continued to sew for too long and this makes it tricky to do, jan
I was told when using the embroidery threads always use the straight up and down peg
hello.... after my machine carriage scane the red light error statrt showing n I dk wha to do, it won't let me can't sewn, can u please help me ?
Have a lovely Easter yourself Dianna and enjoy your new machine. Jan.
to fit the foot - the lift lever goes up HIGHER to allow fitting without taking the screw out - so when you lift the foot CONTINUE lifting the lever and voila! - hope this helps! Im a man but I do sewing lol! My other half cant get the hang of it!
Vladimir Payback Thanks for the info. Jan.
dereton33 Yay!! It works, clever you!! thank you! Do you cook and clean as well!!!, lol!!!!! Jan

Wonderful review, thanks so much for sharing this!!!! Very helpful xxx
No problem .
Kind regards.
Jan.
When she attaches the embroidery unit to sewing unit:
1: the lighting panel lights up, then dies and doesn't respond to button-pressing
2: the 'start/stop' button when pressed remains red, not turning green.
Any ideas welcome, thanks.
Circuit board problem.
how do I sort it
Yes Jan I fix aircraft and when I left the forces I did a chefs course !
Good luck! Jan
dereton33 How much did it cost you to start up your business as far as the machine and marketing
dereton33 What is special with the Bobbinfil Jan and what are the best guage needles? My machine arrived today :) Murray
Hi Vladimir, If you use Bobbinfil it prevents nesting. The guage of needles depends on the material you are using and if you are embroidering the stabilizer can make a difference. So for lightweight use size 11, medium size 14 etc....Enjoy your purchase. Jan
sorry . I just bought the future singer xl400cl machine, could you tell me if I have to buy something else to use it?
No every thing comes with the machine
Many things go into a thread break. Dull needle, needle not facing forward, tension wrong, burr on needle or plate, old or weak or dry thread, bobbin not in right. This is why embroidery is hard and takes a long time to learn. Even the stitch lengths in the design can contribute to breakage. I hope I am helping in some way.
what software does this machine come with or do u have to buy the software in the beginning to try embroidering?
+nana123092 . It comes with it.
Sorry I cant help you there we sold our machine some years back.
Great video one question whats the name of the software are you using
Jules Shultz It came with the machine from singer.
Can you use embroidery design files you buy on the internet with this?
Only if it states that you can use them with this machine.
I can’t seem to fix the tension problem I need help
No I never got past the same problem , I just use the machine as an expensive sewing machine now.
Kind regards,
jan.
Hi just wondering would this machine be able to change the format so it could sew Disney character or would we have to buy brother please help me and my mum:-)
Hi Rebecca you would have to change the format but this machine can do many formats.Jan.
I can't seem to embroider to far before breaking the needle. Anyone know how to fix this problem???
I use MOON form my local market hall. I get a deal because I buy lots at a time, 1000m per bobbin, x 24 = £20. NEVER snaps yet she says embroiderers hate them. METALICS....turn the speed down to half and ALWAYS use the little hair net provided, and the horizontal bobbing holder my metalics never snap this way (I call top thread "bobbin", under neath thread I call a "spool"
Nothing but frustration from beginning to end with this machine. I no longer use it.
:) There might be a singer group too somewhere

Ok thanks Melissa.
Thanks for the info Christopher.
If you still have this machine, I just uploaded a new video that will help you.
Hi i have the xl 400 and i keep getting the error code 6 can u pls help me
You will need to check your boiler manual to see what that error code is.
i tried to create some lettering on small hoop but just say to me to put the bigger hoop... :\
Great review, thank you.
Thank you. Jan.
Can you make your own designs on this machine?
No you can only works with the fonts given with the machine.
Check on HSN.com They show tips on using the Singer Futura XL 400. One of the tips that might help is when you start the embroidery let it stitch 6 to 8 times stop then trim the thread and continue. Hope this helps
MrLineskinner Will do thanks.Jan.
I have a Futura, and had lots of problems in the bobbin area. I kept getting it fixed. I now own a better machine and don't fool with it anymore.
I'm having problems with the software installation. It keeps saying to make sure the machine is on and the USB is connected, anyone else have this problem??
We had the same , we kept on perservering and got there in the end.Jan.
we found a software update on the singer website. updated after installing the disc and then it all opened just fine
Great information thank you
Very welcome
can we do embroidery without computer pls
Not with this machine. Jan.
+dereton33 tanx for the reply
+dereton33 can u do a review on that machine with free motion embroidery pls .
Oh my - if your machine continues to stitch after the thread breaks then it has a fault that you should have repaired. Definitely get it checked out. The machine should always always stop stitching -- and promptly -- if the thread breaks or runs out (top or bottom).
