  • This is a review of the iconoclast tilther by neversink farm tools. This tilther has many benefits to a small scale farm, market garden, homestead, or backyard garden. It can prep a bed for planting, remove weeds, mix in amendments, and really fluff up a bed before planting #iconoclasttiltherreview #neversinkfarmtilther #tilther #marketgarden #marketgardening #smallscalefarm #organicgardening #gardening #garden #farmstead #homestead #farmingtools #neversinkfarmtools #gardentools #gardeningtools #lowtillgardening #regenerativeag #organicgarden #growyourownfood #farmtools

I have a tilther and have used it for many years. However there are some issues you should be aware of.
The batteries go through their stored power very quickly.
We use 100 foot rows and you can not do more than just a few rows on a charge.
Secondly and more troublesome is that even using a really good drill, like Dewalt, the drill is not made to run continuously like it is required when tilthing a whole row. The drills get hot. We burned up brand new drills using them in this manner. So if you think you are going to go through and quickly do 5-10 rows, forget it. The drill and batteries can't handle that workload.

I actually agree with you 100% on this. The more I’ve used it the more I realize this. Drills just aren’t made to be used like this

Thanks, great recommendation! This would save me so much time since I'm using a handheld version of this right now.

Just got one of these for this growing season. It's very well made and seems to work really well after testing it on a few beds in our garden (before our ground froze)

For sure. Only issue I’ve been having is batteries running out of juice after 1 or 2 beds and needed recharged

Been looking for places to review this tool online because it has been such a nightmare. I figure I’d leave a comment in hopes someone looking to buy sees it, this is our second tilther in our 5 years of farming, and we exclusively use tilthing method on all our beds (all together an acre approx) this has caused nothing but problems and is the worst design. Keep in mind we have made efforts to fix these issues with terrible results-
    Flaws specific to this design:
The brake line has stopped releasing so when you are done tilthing it just keeps spinning.
The brake line will pop out of the socket in which it sits near the drill.
The strap will loosen randomly, and won’t go into full power as a result, so you have to stop and retighten the strap.
If the drill swings in the opposite position during transport, the drill (we use dewalt) will get switched into reverse due to the design of the cover on which it rests. You won’t know this until you’ve tilthed backwards into your water line adding an extra half hour of labor to your already busy day.
The bolts have all loosened due to the vibration of the tool. And we didn’t realize until losing bolts into the dirt never to be found again. We had to glue them to stop this.
The strap broke within a few months due to UV damage from normal usage in the sun.
I’ll be honest I wanted to love it, but our last model from Johnnys was a world of difference and had its own issues as any drill powered farm tool will have, but holy hell this is another level. Conner is a seemingly cool dude but he failed on this, and does not allow for reviews to be left on the tools purchasing page, yet another attempt at isolating farmers from one another to communicate and grow as a community.
    DO NOT BUY.

I think ultimately that all Tilthers aren’t meant to be run by a drill. The drills burn up eventually. The best thing in my opinion is a BCS tiller with a precision depth roller. Accomplished the same thing as a Tilther with the depth roller being adjustable. But obviously way more expensive

I’ve had the original tilther since 2019. Originally I was a little put off by the rope used to operate the trigger, it would loosen off over time. It still does, it tightening the knot isn’t a big deal. I had a Milwaukee drill that I used with it. Over time the chuck messed up on the drill so I am on my second drill currently. The tool has worked flawlessly for me. I grow on 1 acre and tilther beds most the time at bed flip. The 1 thing I liked about the neversink version was the shoulderstrap for (maybe) easier carrying. Plastic parts and a bike cable are never going to last long term. Looks slick, works like shit. What is going to break on the unit I have? A rope? Replace. Wooden handles? Not likely. If the unit broke in half I would buy a new one.

Since my last post we are in the middle if planting and I only addressed the drill issue before, but there is a bigger issue I did not address.
The handle on my tilther is cut in half and it is kept together by the plastic cross piece. Perhaps it's designed that way to reduce vibration traveling up the handles, I do not know, but it puts all the lifting stress at that juncture. My left handle, the upper part broke the very first season. We just worked around it and the second season we used the strap to balance the machine.
This year the plastic throttle handle broke off where the piece meets the handle. All of the plastic pieces that screw to the handle are only mounted halfway around the handle. So actually there are two pieces, one on top and one below with a small clearance between them where you can see the wood.
My throttle handle that broke off was on the top side of the handle and the plastic broke off that in an angle from the bottom going in an upwards trajectory. Again this is a stress fracture because all the pressure is focused on that piece.
I was very dissatisfied with the cheapness of the plastic and the design. We are going to remanufacture the plastic pieces with metal and replace the split handles with solid.
Imagine if your wheel barrow arms we split right where the handle meet the metal bin.
Everything you would want to pick it up all the pressure would be on the handle arms and stress the bolt connections next to that splice.
This is our 3rd year with this tool. Also I have 40 beef cows which we've had for 20 years and we raised and bred hogs. We are not "new" to farming. We wanted to enhance our farm income with selection of winter hardy storage crops. This is Not designed for regular heavy duty usage, sorry.
