  • On June 1, 2002, our loving father, Manuel Reyes Boquiren, was brutally murdered in his Union City, CA home by his ex-wife, Loida Cruz.
On that morning, Cruz was angry about our father wanting to host a surprise birthday party for our grandmother (his mother). She argued with him the night before and continued the next day. Our father realized that he made a big mistake by allowing her back into his life, but it was too late. He told her that their relationship was over, but instead of leaving, she decided to ambush and kill him because if she could not have him, no one could. She stabbed him with a kitchen knife 48 times. He suffered wounds to his heart, lungs, and genital area. Three of the wounds were exit wounds. She cut through some of his ribs, severed the femoral artery and struck the beginning of the aorta. He also had defensive wounds on the back of his hands. At the time of his murder, their 8-yr-old son (our half bro) was upstairs watching cartoons in his room.
She pleaded not guilty and hired an attorney to help her convince the jury that she was a battered wife, but our father never hit her or anyone ever during his lifetime. She also accused our father of rape. She also wanted to assert a mental health defense. The prosecutor fought for her to be convicted of 1st-degree murder due to many threats by her in the past. Substantial evidence, via tape recorder and photographs proving our case, were also included in the trial. On May 4, 2004, after a long and emotional trial, she was convicted of 2nd-degree murder and sentenced to 16 yrs - life.
Our family has been very much affected by Cruz even prior to her murdering our father. Although it has been almost 18 yrs, we are still traumatized and very fearful. She has NEVER shown any genuine remorse for what she did and still blames everyone but herself. You cannot trust her. She is evil, cold-hearted, selfish, narcissistic, and everything opposite of what she claims to be. Words can be easily said or written, but what really matters is the fact that she stabbed our father 4 dzn times on that morning. That was clearly not an accident, and it wasn’t self defense. She planned it. We believe that our dad recorded a previous conversation between them and documented everything in the past because he knew she would harm him one day. That was legitimate proof to show everyone what kind of person she really is.
How can a person who committed such a gruesome murder on an innocent person be given a second chance? She may be a woman, but she should not be underestimated because she is very strong and will kill again. She is still young and we are absolutely sure that she is on a mission to murder our family. Our loved ones still reside all over California. We all have anxiety. We are petrified of what she can do to us. Cruz has threatened all of us before and we all know that she is highly capable of fulfilling her desire of hurting us.
She was denied parole on 8/17/17. On 2/20/20, during the parole hearing, our family poured our hearts out and the district attorneys fought hard for us, but sadly, we did not receive the outcome we had hoped for. Regardless of the heinous crime she committed, she was granted Cruz parole.
Unfortunately, in California 49% of female inmates are being granted parole. Cruz did her research and said all the “right things” that the commissioner wanted to hear. We know she has been doing her best to get out of prison - having good behavior, attending therapy, and stating she follows a series of steps to help her cope when she is triggered; keeping a job, and recruiting people, including prison staff, to write her letters of recommendation.
Our next and final step is to have Governor Gavin Newsom listen to our story. Hopefully, he will see through her manipulation and agree with us to reject and block the Board of Parole’s decision. We have approximately 120 days.
Many supporters have asked what they can do to assist us in this matter.
We are asking for letters to be written to the governor stating why you do NOT want inmate, Loida Cruz, granted parole.

On behalf of our family, we kindly ask to help us have Governor Newsom overturn Cruz's parole. We strongly believe she is a major threat to not only our family, relatives, and friends, but also to society. She does not deserve to be free and live a normal life because she intentionally took another. Instead, she should suffer and remain behind bars for the rest of her life.
Let justice prevail. Bring peace to our father.
Thank you for all your prayers and continued support.
