At the time the critics were not kind to this film or Joan's performance and Joan herself tended to agree but nearly 90 years on I say she gave a tremendous performance especially when she's just listening. You can see the transformation on her face and in those incredible eyes. She goes from brazen to broken and does it all in silence.
This is a great performance by Joan Crawford btw, thanks for uploading. I hadn't realized that her eyes didn't blink in the entire scene, that's so awesome!
Interesting how this is really an anti-religious hypocrisy story, and sides with the hooker as the truly good-natured person over the hyper-religious teetotalers.
Yes we live in a world where Satan Reigns, that old Serpent and the devil even thinks that everything in this world is his kingdom, that's why he is who he is a "deceived and defeated foe", Satan when tempting the Lord in the desert tempted him to Bow before him by offering Christ as he said all the kingdoms of this world which had been given to him by God, but the Lord told him you shall not tempt the Lord your God. Imagine that trying to offer God incarnate what belonged to God already _ now tell me if Satan is deceived or not? But later Christ would teach His disciples how to pray by ending the prayer saying "For Thine is the Kingdom, and Power and the Glory O Lord, forever and ever. Amen. My prayer is that this woman Joan Crawford would have become saved but unfortunately it is more likely than not that she did not find time for repentance it happens to many people everyday. And some people wait for the 12th hour But die on the eleventh hour.
@@user-bt7ix6sw2g I forgive you for your bullying statement but I suggest that you seek God while He may be found, call on Him while He is near, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, please do not neglect so great a Salvation. For as it is appointed unto mankind once to die and then comes the Judgment - so Christ Jesus died once for The Ransom of many. 📖 But once a person dies it is the end of the world for that person and the next thing they will know consciously is that they will be standing before God on The Day of Judgment, and we do not want to stand before an angry God because God is a consuming fire. But God came to Earth to die for our sins in our place He took all of our sins upon Himself and thus He justified us. For there is no other name given on earth whereby man can be saved except by the Name of Christ Jesus of Nazareth.❣️🙏
This is how I learned the Lord's prayer. Kind of ironic as this movie seems to be anti religious as it delivers the message of the hypocrisy of religion.
Thank you Montevideo2001 for explaining! I think the theory that makes the most sense to me is the second one. The first one is not very realistic because of Sadie's abrupt change when Davidson died. In case it was the third one it would have been pretty cool that they put that in the movie, I mean in an explicit way.
this is truly amazing acting...the concentration she has is astounishing...she does not blink once...not one time from 1:17 on...thats nearly 1 1/2 minutes...and that voice!! those whiny actresses today should take note...
Can you please explain to me the ending of this movie? SPOILER: Why does Davidson kill him self at the end? Was Sadie just pretending to be religious after this scene? My theory is that maybe Davidson tried to rape her or something, he couldnt stand the guilt so he just killed him self, or maybe Sadie killed him; I think so because after he dies she is herself again.
No explanation is offered in the movie as to why Sadie should have a complete turn around when Davidson begins to recite the Lord's Prayer, so it's up to the viewer to theorize what happened. One theory is that Sadie harkened back to her Christian upbringing, realized how far she had strayed, and repented her ways, just as Davidson hoped. Another theory is that she faked it, knowing how much power he and his mission held over her and convinced that her only means of getting any leniency at the penitentiary was to have him on her side. A third theory is that she was fashioning a plan to expose him in his hypocrasy, put him in his place, and show him that even HE has sin in his heart and that he shouldn't be judging her.
+Deborah Rondon I think her initial repentance was real -- she'd already tried everything else in life, and perhaps this was the answer...the Reverend was mightily persuasive. However...he was also obsessed with her in a not-so-holy way, as indicated by his approach to her at the end of the film. I think he then killed himself out of guilt. After the Reverend's hypocrisy, she then reverts to her former world-weary, knowledgeable self.
+8angst8 Thanks, I like your theory. I think that in the end regardless of what really happened, the movie makes a statement against religionism and any kind of practice that turns out to be intolerant to people with other beliefs or ways of life. Because there's a story behind every person that makes them behave the way they do.
Agreed. In the 1928 silent version, "Sadie Thompson," I think it is even more strongly inferred that he raped her and later killed himself out of guilt and shame.
I've always felt that after he raped her she killed him... she's a different person. She's reclaimed her individually and saw him for the monster he was. I don't believe the implications was that killed himself, I really think she killed him.
Looks likes a film version of a Somerset Maugham story where the 'loose lady' is converted but at the end reverts to her previous ways when the preacher man tries to have sex with her. I think he might have committed suicide when she rejected him in horror.

And then she was betrayed.
She should have won the Oscar for this!
"And the next time you talk to him you can tell him this for me---that Sadie Thompson is on her way to HELL!!!"
Best line in the whole movie!

I didn't know about the blinking til I read that. I had to watch twice to appreciate the talent. First time, was just to see her eyes not blinking!
Deborah Rondon she probably blinked while the camera was over to him or something
Internet legend has it, that she [Lucille Fey Laseur?] learned to do that based on the 'hoods" she grew up with.
*A truly awesome & intense scene. religion without grace & mercy is mere fanatical madness.*
Absolutely right. That was the message of the film.
I can’t believe she wasn’t even nominated for this Oscar worthy performance!!
She had such beautiful eyes- even in black & white.
This hit me right in the feels and those are actual tears 😢
This was a fantastic film that couldn't possibly have been made five years later, or any time again until the late 50s or early 60s.
My mom was named after Joan Crawford. I love Walter Huston.
I just notice she didn't blink omg!!!😂😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Under those old fashioned hot lights!
Holy shot this is awesome
I can’t believe it took years for critics to embrace this film! She should have won the Oscar for this hands down.
