One of my biggest pet peeves in public transport and planes is people calling on speakerphone and watching video's. I fantasize about throwing their phone out the door 😂

I do remember a book detailing a conversation between two rail passengers, one of which having a mobile phone and the other asking “is it insured”, an “oh yes” resulting in the phone being thrown out of the window.

People line up early because they want to ensure they get bin space and isn't taken by that person who brings 4 tiny suitcases in the overhead.

Same with elevators. I always say loudly - EMPTY the container before trying to fill it.
I have no issues with kids on planes. I do have issues with kids who misbehave and the parents do nothing. Has happened many times on flights, train trips etc.
I hate traveling. I mean, I love going to places, I just hate the "getting there" part. The luggage, the waiting around, the people, the sitting on a plane for hours, the airports in general, all that makes me want to stay home instead.

I'm the exact opposite. I love it. I love airports, train stations, the announcements, the departure boards, the little shops, etc all of it.
It depends on the form of travelling. I hate flying, not because of the flight itself, but for the many queues you have to go through. Waiting at the entrance, waiting at check in, waiting in front of security, waiting in front of the gate, waiting in the gate and waiting in the plane because somebody in the first row puts his things very relaxed into the overhead bin.
I love train stations and ports though. But for many destinations you have go through these airport experiences.
YES! I feel the same way. I despise the whole process. I just want to get to my destination.

One or two things I'll add is 1. you're flying solo don't be afraid to start up a conversation with the person next to you, it can make your flight better and a gateway to a friendship,
2. If you're travelling with friends or family don't forget to select your seats when you're booking, and don't be that person who asks to switch seats
Before striking up a conversation realize not everyone wants to talk. Some bring work, want to listen to a podcast or just want peace and quiet.
You can start up the conversation, but don't be disappointed if the person next to you doesn't want to talk...

I'm totally a stand when I can man. My legs are usually numb by the time we land and all I'm thinking about is standing. I go out of my way to help other people get their stuff down but I'm not in a rush. Just uncomfortable.
I am a stand when I can as well. Recently went on my first long-haul flight lots of folks standing by the restrooms, not waiting to get in just stretching their legs. I’m tall and my knees could not take being in that bent position for long.
I could write a very interesting book on the dramas and tribulations i have seen at airports in my near 60 years of travelling.

@@MiaHessMusic In the UK British European Airways started flights to the "Costa Blanca" in the late 50s. These were the first package holidays for British people. We (parents & siblings) went on our first one in 1962. My first, what I call proper overseas trip on my own was to Paris in 1965. It was very exciting, but also a little scary.
Take off your backpack before you board the plane. If you don’t, chances are you smack it into someone‘s face when you turn around to ask you better half which row you’re sitting in. And you’ll of course slow down the boarding, as stowing it away will take longer, if you still need to take it off.
Yes! And have the stuff you want with you already out or easy to grab so you can throw the bag up and be done with it 😀
You shouldn't be that close to people anyway.
I’m not even sure that backpacks should be allowed under security measures. Almost any time people wearing them turn around they hit someone. I can deal with it as a 50 year old but my mom at 78 could end up at the hospital after such a bag strike.
I usually have a carry on in my hands unfortunately. I put that up in the bin, then take off the pack quickly and get in my seat, while storing it under seat.
This video reminds me of why I hate flying so much. It seems to be a magnet for bad behaviour. Being in such a tight space together should make being kind and being considerate the rule.
Kindness: would be nice if everyone traveled with it

I work as a Gate Controller for one of the major airlines here in Canada. All great advice! I’d also add, please have your ID and boarding pass in hand when approaching the podium. Don’t wait until you’re first in line and then decide when you’re face-to-face with me to only then start going through your purse or backpack to find your passport and boarding pass.

@@BillGreenAZI absolutely do. They should have to go to the back of the line & do it again until they get it right lol. If someone’s is digging through their bag looking for a boarding pass at the gate then they should be told to step aside. They hold up the entire line. Same thing at Aldi. They’re at the register looking shocked that they need their wallets. I guess I just don’t have patience.

"Don't complain about kids."
If the kid is question is throwing a tantrum, climbing all over the chairs, running up and down the aisle, or kicking the seat in front of them, then I think it maybe worth complaining about.
A pet peeve of mine is an airport not listing a departure terminal and gate, until 45 minutes to an hour before departure. This has happened to me twice in European airports.
Like in heathrow when they sit in this one area and then run to your gate when we announce 😀
I found that to be common practice at Heathrow and I absolutely hate it. Which is why I'm more than willing to pay extra not having to fly through airports that do that 🙂
Heathrow wants you to spend $ at their shops 😅 at the common waiting area.
Or when you’re heading for the gate, they change it. I was traveling with my sister and brother-in-law. They were going to get some drinks while we waited and I headed towards the gate then I see that the gate has changed so I quickly texted them to let them know. a very long time ago, I was going on a short flight and the signage to the gate was not clear, I was overtired and not in a good mood. I had to set my coffee down to get my stuff turned around in the small area. Then come a bunch of flight attendants off a flight knocking over my coffee and saying oh sorry. I left my coffee there and went to the gate
If someone is sitting by themselves way off in a corner in the terminal, don't invite all your friends and family to sit right next to that individual. They want to be alone. I find an empty gate before going to my gate so it's easy to find a space to myself. There's no reason to sit right next to a person sitting by themselves.
I agree. People are weird about it.
...as well, people may desire space alone because they are grieving. Not everyone is on a travel "holiday."

Fully charge your phone before you get to the airport and bring a battery bank. Get to the airport 3 hours before a domestic flight and 4 hours before an international flight. You can visit all your favorite websites on your phone for entertainment and you don't have to worry about running out of battery.
THANK YOU for this desperately needed video! 3 enhancements I'd love to add: 1. Don't wear pants or maxi dresses with hems that drag on the floor for the same barefoot-bathroom reasons. 2. Don't be stinky would also include drowning in cologne or perfume. Crying babies don't give me headaches but Shalimar swimmers do. 3. You have the right to recline but please don't slam your seat back. No one needs their tablet crunched or their drink spilled on them. Great video as always!
Ive been nailed a few times over the years by the quick seat back recline people. Ouch
Airlines need to start dealing with people who put their carry on and "personal bag" in the overhead storage. I've told a few people off about that on flights, the personal bag is under the seat in front of you. NOT taking up space for bags for the rest of us.
So true. Cabin crew bears a lot of the blame.
My favourite thing to see was a flight attendant who asked politely over the speaker twice for people to move their small bags to the floor, and then went along the entire plane grabbing all the coats and small bags out of the overhead, demanding to know who owned each, and shoving them back to whoever claimed them.
@@PleaseApplaud that's what they should do. We travel the world full time, I get sick and tired of people who can't follow basic protocol. I've seen people put stuff up there and yanked it out myself and told them you personal bag goes under the seat in front of you.
Another tip on carry on luggage is place it in the overhead bin on its side if it fits that way. More modern aircraft have bins that are taller and accommodate bags being turned on their side. You can fit another bag in each bin this way.
Also, be polite when you check in. Flying from Heathrow to Toronto on Air Canada, my bag was a lot overwieght. I said, "no problem, I will pay the charge. I know it's heavy. " They tried to convince me to take the heavy thing out of my bag, I said, "it's a brake drum for an old car, I can't bring that into the cabin. No problem, I will pay the 50 quid." Then they said that I didn't have to pay. I got on the plane and was told, "My Lewis, we have a new boarding pass for you." I was then moved to first class.
I once had an angry business man cut in front of me at check in. The check-in lady told me not to worry because I was getting a good seat while she put him in the worst seat possible. Made my day!

I have a rule to NEVER book an itinerary that has a layover less than 2 hrs. I don't care what airport the is. There's too many things that may cause a connection to arrive late.

Awesome tips. When it comes to standing to the right on the escalator I would also suggest noting what the locals are doing as it varies between countries. In Australia, we stand on the left on escalators.

I learned this from a friend in her home country of Germany. It’s just good etiquette, wish we did it in the states.
11:48 - I think airport bathroom cleanliness has improved lately. I always hit the "green smiley" on the electronic survey boards as I'm leaving and I sincerely thank the cleaning people whenever I encounter them.
I've never seen a bad airport bathroom - certainly not one I wouldn't choose over a midflight lavatory visit.
United States. I was amazed to watch a airplane door be opened after it was closed for two people who were late. Must admit they were not nice to airline people at door. Business travelers around me were also amazed.
That is wild. Yeah, door closed means.... DOOR CLOSED whenever ive been on a flight. Yikes
I've had them reopen the boarding doors for me a bunch of times, but I can't remember when I've ever seen the plane door reopened.
Probably was their connection and the airlines fault
People on planes can be impolite, from dumping their bags into overheads not ABOVE their seats so passengers ACTUALLY sitting there has no place to put their bags and then has to go further back to place their bag in an overhead and then try to make their way back against the flow to sit down (probably the other person’s bag should have gone) propping their feet on your armrest ahead of their seat.
Once I was sitting in business class, window seat, this man sitting next to me, bought women’s fashion magazines like Vogue and started to rip out pages and dump them on the floor so when I let him know that I need access to the aisle, he got up but did not clean his mess, when I mentioned his magazine dumping he told me to just walk on it. Then when we were disembarking the plane, I said loud enough that others could hear” Sir, you forgot your magazines.” He turned around to “It’s alright
I don’t want them.” Total jerk left them for the flight attendants to clean up. I picked them up and the attendant that had a bag ready, thanked me. I told her, “I’m sorry that you have to deal with jerks like that.”
Great advice, but the problem is the people who do that rude stuff are either not watching this video or don't care what others think.

This is unrelated, and not that I fly much, but I feel very self conscious when I fly. As a larger person I'm painfully aware that no one wants to sit next to me. Once the person was approaching down the isle, saw me and immediately asked the flight attendant if she could switch her seats. Ouch. I do all I can do minimise my impact such as never using the armrests or leaning to the side (I never take middle seats), etc. If I could afford it I'd buy an extra seat. I think she noticed this was and was quite kind to me a couple of times.
I had a flight once where my two rowmates were both larger people, and they politely offered to adjust positions so they were in the two seats that had an armrest which folded out of the way, and gave me the seat with the fixed armrest. I think they were actually more comfortable without the armrest, too.
I can tell you that I had a terrible experience sitting by someone obese. I had to cling to my window wall bc the person was over into my seat. My entire side that touched this person (on a fully booked plane) was drenched with their sweat, not mine, Im a petite person and always cold on a plane. It was completely unpleasant. I am telling you this bc you need to hear it. I hope that you do what you can to lose weight. It benefits you mentally and physically. Then you don't have to suffer through the anxiety and embarrassment.
There's no reason you shouldn't fly, but you really need to buy two seats if you're big enough to take up space beyond one seat. It will make you more comfortable on the flight as well as those around you. I think the extra cost is well worth it for you to be able to fly in comfort and not feel self conscious about other people's reactions. Other passengers will appreciate that you were considerate enough to make the effort.
I love the term “Gate Lice”, lol. It drives me nuts when people swarm the gate:). Folks don’t use their head sometimes especially on the “left lane” escalator ride :). Great advice on “D” , all of the above :). People do gross stuff for sure, lol. Oh yeah , “I don’t know who ripped but”, lol, I am still laughing:). I appreciate you so much Mark:).

Stand up right away if you’re flying into NYC, because the people from the back of the plane will rush forward and you’ll be last off. There’s a reason people stand and take their place in the aisle. If you don’t, people from rows behind you will cut ahead.
True. I do do that sometimes. Flying back from colombia last week and had to stand up and pritect this little abuela that people were about to run over. Was like... we got in 45 min early, you are fine. Abuela was very thankful
I typically just relax and wait for the initial rush to end, but one flight I realized I needed to go to the lav, just after they turned on the seat belt signs for descent. so I was feeling a little pressured to depart.
Bravo! THIS is what they should show on the airplane TVs during departure instead of the safety briefing. Safety is important but this wisdom is even more vital!
Several times while flying, I have given encouraging words to parents who are working hard to do it right.
A couple of years ago I was on a flight where a two year old girl cried continually during the descent. I imagine her ears hurt, but whatever it was her young father - traveling alone with the child - was trying his best to comfort her. I was a few rows behind him and I could see him doing the best he could, but he couldn't get her to stop crying and he was mortified. When we got off the plane, I saw him in the gate area, getting his daughter situated in her stroller and I said, "Looks like she's feeling better, it got a little rough there, didn't it?" He started apologizing for his child crying on the flight and I told him, "No worries, you did the best you could and she couldn't help it. I can tell you're a good dad." The young man almost started crying he was so grateful to have the affirmation.

It's a little too late for you now, but it's really nice having TSA precheck or Global Entry for trips like yours. You can get through security in the US in about 15 minutes, and when returning home, you can get through customs in 15 minutes or less.

In Japan, in the Kanto region you stand on the left side of the escalator and in the Kansai Region (Osaka) you stand on the right. Most of Japan the left side is where u stand, including the airport.
That's right I admit I was a little confused, I went from Tokyo to Kyoto then Osaka, I'm French so I kept telling myself to stick to the left side, but in Osaka people stand on the right side on escalators but walk on the left. 😅 So I just waited to see where other people whould stand so I would not be in their way 🙂
Same in Australia: stand on the left. Probably the best advice is to look at what most folks are doing!
If you want to tilt your seat back, do it slowly. Doing it fast can cause drink spillage behind you.
Or a broken nose 😀
I have found that ONE notch is most comfortable for me and gives the person behind me their space. . Long flights totally upright hurt my back.
I always lean around and ask the person behind me if they mind if I recline before I do it.
No one has ever said no.
And always sit upright for meal services.
Ever since 09-11, I always arrive at any airport at least 2 hours before departure time. At busy airports-- I have even arrived up to three hours early especially if I know their security TSA is slow!
Ive started flying from small regional airports just to cut out the big airport security lines to avoid the stress
One time I was sitting in the middle seat and the guy in the aisle seat was literally pushing my arm off the armrest with his arm. I had to set him straight on flight etiquette!
Thanks for doing this video. People have gotten much worse since Covid. My spouse is a pilot and dealing with people has made his job tough. You wouldn't believe the things he sees. For my own awful story- once I was travelling with my baby on my lap. Despite a major surgery a month before, she was quiet, smiling. The man seated in front of us glared and complained about babies as he saw my baby as he boarded. Then he immediately and purposely rammed his seat back into my baby with no warning. I was scared that he hurt her- but she looked startled and remained in good spirits. She was great the whole flight. People don't be an abusive jerk, especially to babies.
Be efficient when finding your seat. Do some preparations. Some is very slow when arriving to their seat: First they take the book out, then slowly puts their bag on top, then their jacket, and so on. While the queue behind them is getting longer. Especially annoying when it is cold/freezing outside. It can cause delays as well.

Spent decades flying on business. This should be mandatory to watch for all occasional flyers. We had a good time traveling to Italy couple weeks ago. Cept for the gate lice in Atlanta. 😂

FYI - Aeromexico deplanes in groups, as in rows 1 to 15, then 16 to 30, etc. Eliminates the mad rush to try and get off the plane.

Babies and small kids are annoying for other passengers on a plane. You have the right to travel with your kids, but don't say it's nice for other people, because it's not.
My wife and I took our 5 month old on her first flight a couple weeks ago. Flight to our destination, she was mostly quiet and happy. We sang songs and played with her. The passenger in front of us got so mad at us for "talking nonstop."
On the flight home, our daughter was fussier, cried a bit more, and was just overall unhappy despite our best efforts. The people around us were so kind and wonderful, it made for a much better flight.
Would that person on the first flight have preferred some kicking and screaming? I suspect not.

Oh the liquid thing reminded me of the airport outside of Paris had three separate security checkpoints before I got to my gate. I passed security once and thought it was fine to buy a water. Only to come across another conveyor belt security checkpoint where I had to throw it away. But then I got through that and bought another drink and had to throw the second one away once I came across the third checkpoint. That was really frustrating. haha

I confess I've been guilty of standing up once the plane lands and the seatbelt light turns off. But honestly, I did it because after a long flight standing up feels so good. Now I try to get up a bit a hour or so before the flight finishes so there's no problems. You can't go anywhere right away when the flight ends so there's really no point getting up.

i think all airlines put a boarding time on your ticket now. ofter an hour before. departure for international flights. 30 mins before for domestic.
they should put boarding time and recommended arrival at the airport time. with google ruling the world, now, they should set a reminder on the phone when it's time to leave the house.
(my MIL took too long to get ready to leave last time she visited, and I wasn't watching the time as closely as I should have.)

Great video Mark! This should be broadcasted at airports and on flights. Thinking of my last transcon and cringing when you mentioned the personal space - Granny got a little to close to me, alot. Respect your fellow travelers people! We're all in the pressurized flying tube together! Again, great video my friend! Love 'em!
This video should be a mandatory watch for everyone planning to travel by air. My pet peeve is seeing passengers boarding an aircraft and immediately putting their carry-on luggage in a open overhead bin up at the front of the cabin, and then proceeding to their assigned seat towards the rear. These individuals are holding up the boarding and disembarking process by making that unnecessary stop enroute as well as taking a needed bin space away for someone sitting in the rows below it. I also wish everyone would follow that simple escalator etiquette that was mentioned.

As someone who works for an airline, I agree with all of these! A lot of airport tips videos are common sense, not relevant, or just wrong but he hits the topics I see people do all the time. Well deserved like.

Very cool to see you and your son with an AirMalta plane behind you. My family is from Malta and it’s always cool to see any good representation of Malta in the wild.
One tip if you got long interconnecting flights and feel like sh*t after the first leg. If you have a longer layover don't skip out on an airport lounge. Yes it's expensive but the 1h of rest, sleep in a proper bed even, and probably also a hot shower (depending on the lounge) will make you feel ways better. Also less people around.

Barefoot to the lavatory is an absolute no go!! For the kids, too. I have had to clean up pee from the floor, with very limited supplies......

As of last year, flying from Amsterdam, you can bring all the liquids in. So happy about this :) no more expensive drinks from the airport I just bring my own
This might not work for everyone but my daughter suffers from cabin pressure. We got over the ear headphones and it seemed to help reduce the pressure. At least it was manageable for her.
Back in late February, when I flew home to Amsterdam, my flight from Tampa to Atlanta arrived late by almost 90 minutes. The flight attendant did ask people to stay seated, so those that were in a hurry could get off the aircraft first to make their connection. Of course, 90% of the people on board didn't listen and I ended up just barely catching my flight to Amsterdam.
People should really be more attentive.
It's very easy to be attentive. On a previous flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam I noticed the passenger sitting next to me checking his boarding pass for a connecting flight as we were getting close to the airport. Since I was on the aisle seat, I offered to switch places with him, so he could get off quicker. With Amsterdam being my final destination, I wasn't in a hurry, and a little bit of kindness goes a long way.

I will say this with regards to escalators/people movers in airports or hometown subway systems. Not all escalators are the same width, and not all people are slim and agile. Some of them are large, and some need mobility aids. Your dash to a plane, train, etc is your issue. Knocking someone off balance, aggravating an injury isn't a kind thing to do nor is it safe.

@@fourthgirlagree. My wife uses a cane and has balance challenges. If the blasted elevators are broken/closed (Seattle airport last year), I have to stand next to her on the escalator to keep her steady and prevent her from falling. No, I cannot move out of anyone’s way.

the only issue I have with the gate lice thing: most of the time I can only hear the gate agents when I'm standing right in front of them because of the bad PA system at most airports and the noise. I don't want to stand there, but it's the only way I can hear what they're saying. I try to stand to the side though (if I have a very high boarding group).

Yes, it's your device and show, but others can still view your screen at times and it make things uncomfortable. Always enjoy hearing what you have to say! Best!
I will def do it the next time I fly. But def be ready for TSA line. Not being prepare slow the line down, and could cause someone to miss their flight due to tsa line taking too long.
Great advice. After a long flight sitting down, standing up as soon as possible to stretch the legs is very natural. Everyone knows it doesn't get you off any quicker but it doesn't slow things down either. I have observed that when they ask you to remain sitting until your row is called doesn't speed things up anyhow. If you want to stand stand if you want to sit sit, it makes no difference.

@@jonathantitus2629 hi Jonathan, we are going to CVG return from LAX yes :). Not flying to Indianapolis but will drive there. Have a 40min time between two connecting flights in Chicago on the way back so am a bit nervous about that, I better ask the flight attendant if we can exit first haha. Hopefully gate is not far away
To me the most annoying thing about flying are all the gate changes, particularly if they change the concourse. Gates change the most when there are widespread delays. Had a two hour layover and had 4 gate changes in the time, then about 10 minutes before boarding was suppose to start they changed it again.
What I generally do is find the most current gate number and park my fanny so I can see the big departure board and finally move with about 15 minutes before the displayed boarding time.

On a recent set of flights, I put the armrests up along the three seats in an effort to offer my two other seat mates the opportunity to enjoy a less cramped flight, while also being prepared that my seat mate may feel more comfortable with their armrest (and so I not object, nor even mention it). Sometimes people will put the armrest down, but people generally seem to be more relaxed when they are not "caged" as much into their space. It's a "touchy" issue, but it seems that when offered the opportunity, people will be willing to be closer to the point of touching another, if they can prevent being forced into a smaller space. It's a little like the give-n-take of soft luggage in a bin vs hard-sided baggage. Again it's a sensitive thing, but sometimes it can be beneficial for everyone.
Some of the things you mention, are the reason that if I can afford it, I fly business class. (Priority boarding, and all that nice airport stuff.)

Yea, i just chill out at the bar closest to the gate and can hear the boarding assignments as their announced as I'm throwing down a few beers.
When its getting close i buy each beer individually so i dont have to wait for the bill.
