The Art of Hype: Haikyuu!

  • DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS TILL SEASON 4
    Haikyuu! is one of the most hype anime to exist, and I love it to death, so here's me acting like I know what I'm talking about for 10 minutes.
    Haikyuu! is an anime about the Karasuno High School Volleyball Team, consisting of our main characters Hinata and Kageyama, trying to reach to the top of the country. More than a sports anime, this show captures the essence of the human emotion, and all that complicated stuff. Basically, it's really good. The antagonists are cool too, like Ushiwaka and Oikawa.
    Watch it.

    what i love about the freak quick from the twin is, that it shows that there is another setter besides kageyama who could set hinata. so the words „you have no worth without kageyama“ are simply wrong, and hinata can play with other skillfull setter

    I agree with every word of this. Especially when you talk about the animation and sound. Now, I think the Haikyuu manga is brilliant, but I will always prefer the anime. I just feel that the sound, the music and also the voice acting add so much to the story, and the characters. I agree with everything you said about the twin's quick scene. Similarly, I really love the Hinata's "take it easy" receive in episode 24. How well the music gets you to feel that out of control, strangling feeling as Karasuno is going too fast, not listening to Ukai telling them to slow down, to stop panicking... how the screen starts to go black around the edges, showing the players stressed, tense faces... then it all goes quiet except for Hinata's "all right!" and the sound of him bumping the ball, and all the light comes back to the screen. And how when the music comes back it's very soft and calming, showing the boys all talking a deep breath... it's such a beautifully animated scene.

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  2 роки тому +8

      Take it easy is one of the greatest moments in fiction for me. It’s a beautiful masterpiece, and only a handful of moments in any story have come close to that. Will definitely make a video on it someday.

    What i love of Haikyu!! was also their tracks of songs/instrumental music ... they knew wehn to put the music. For example in the season2 their finals against seijo, where maddog-chan was finally appears on the court, man, the soundtrack of violin/saxophone hits hards, it feels like a new villain rise from the dead. Then in season4 in the shiratorizawa's camp where hinata shouts at hyakuzawa "let's take it easy, hyakuzawa" then the music of like a choir sounds, it feels like you reached at the top of mount everest. And of course the sound of a "bump" of hinata from ojiro aran when the karasuno feels like they already lost, that's the most epic scene in Inarizaki vs Karasuno match. Not to mention their OP and Ending music. Haikyu!! really sets really high.

    "a lot people don't give haikyuu a chance" can confirm, so many of my friends recommended it to me and i always thought "oh, it's just people playing volleyball. i don't even like volleyball that much." but haikyuu showed me that volleyball isn't as mundane as i imagined it to be, i never even saw actual gameplay and just assumed it to be people passing a ball over a net. it showed me there's more to volleyball than just hitting a ball or getting the perfect pass, it's about the people you can rely on and fall back onto safely too. in mid 2018, haikyuu was at the bottom of my watchlist and i never planned on watching it, and in late 2021, i'm playing in tournaments for the thing i'm the most passionate about.

  • @NaxipTV.

    Great video, i love haikyuu. I just thought i should say, you joke about ushijima's personality, but I think he is the perfect embodiment of confidence in an athlete. He comes off as serious but aloof, he doesn't always understand the impact of his words, but the reason why this makes him great is because he whole-heartedly believes that he is the best and has the skill to back it up. He doesn't have any baseless confidence. If you go to a sports team, there is usually someone who is super good, but not very socially adept, which is what I think the point of ushijima's character was. He doesn't really care about being perceived as a certain type of person, all he cares is that he is good at volleyball, that's why they called him a volleyball idiot. I think Haikyuu has the best character writing of any show I've ever seen, every character gets something about them that has depth and they don't feel like generic anime stereotypes.

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  2 роки тому +7

      Yes! Ushiwaka is actually one of my top 5 favorite characters, exactly for this reason. He doesn’t look down on anyone he simply states facts. “You should’ve joined Shiratorizawa, Oikawa,” was not meant to be a taunt but what he thought was best for Oikawa. And honestly, that truly might’ve been the better choice for the guy, but we’ll never know. I did joke about him here, but man do I love his character it’s amazing. You’re right, Haikyuu has some of the best character writing in the world!

    Tanaka's monologue in S4 got me so fucking hard, because I always knew I played better than a lot of people, but I was always behind some monsters in the field. But when it showed Tanaka almost giving up, just to come back harder, I felt happy, I knew I had been in his place, but I wanted to play some more, and to be able to, I had to step up my game and forget the feeling of being weak

    Another banger
    Aah that “moment”. Literally the reason I play sports. So far I haven’t been as hyped for my own moments as I have for haikyuus tho, and I think you explained that in this video. The cinematography is what elevates an amazing sports moment to... idk how to describe it. Bad with words :P
    I get what you mean about the anime being better, and what the animation and music add to the scene (I definitely agree on the music, so far an anime hasn’t made me cry if it doesn’t have the sound track for it). And personally I haven’t experienced a moment in a manga then watched it in an anime, so I can’t directly compare. But there are moments in the haikyuu manga that hit me HARD, the type of moments when the music will cut out. Honestly I’ll be surprised if seeing it animated will make it consciously better, but I hope it will. Cause that would be a great feeling
    Do you happen to be planning/thinking of covering stuff from the manga too? Or just gonna wait till it gets adapted? From how much you talk about stuff that’s anime only (eg music) I’m assuming you won’t be covering the last arc or two of the manga... gonna be years before it’s released too :(
    Sorry for such a long comment, these vids make me want to talk a lot lol

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  3 роки тому +2

      I love long comments, you’re good! I am planning on making manga videos, particularly characters that we’ve exclusively seen in the manga. I don’t know if you saw my Bokuto video but that was a manga video because I fell in love with his arc there! But I still think when the manga gets adapted the anime will take it to the next level. And you will get your “moment” irl at some point just keep pushing!

      @@HarshReviews ooh of course, sorry it was a few days ago that I watched the Bokuto video so I forgot it was mainly manga. I also think of the "manga"/non-anime-yet stuff as starting with the beach arc (hopefully that's a minor enough spoiler for whoever might read this)
      I haven't re-read the nationals arc since starting to watch season 4 cause I realized there was so much I'd forgotten completely, which means I get to experience it again like it's the first time! (might also be because I zoomed through that section, I started reading just as the final match of the series was starting) I wanna have that again for the Nekoma match cause I know a lot of people think it's the best match in Haikyuu, and I don't remember it at all.
      also, iirc you don't talk about how what you spoke about in that video is proven/accepted by Bokuto in the final match. how he consciously knows he's a "normal" ace now (lol). honestly, I'm just hungry for people to talk about that last match, I should really just search for it I'm sure people have talked about it in this form, I mean in a video essay

I think what adds to the hype is character development that is not rushed. Characters grow slowly, giving the audience time to remember their journey. And when the most meaningful moment happens, the viewers fully understand the stakes.

    Sometimes in haikyuu, they build something up as incredibly challenging in a way that in another story you'd expect the characters to be terrified, but they wait a little bit before showing the reactions. Then they cut to hinata or kageyama smiling and staring intently, and somehow these simple scenes where nothing really happens get me so fucking hyped, as with a single expression you you at once get their intense passion for volleyball, their drive to defeat stronger opponents and grow, while also setting up that we're gonna see something epic, something is getting thrown at them and they're gonna meet it head on, and it's not clear whether they'll succeed.

I read the manga all the way through, back when season 4 hadn’t been released yet and I read the entire thing with hype songs (such as rap, techno, anime music) and it made all the moments hit home. The amount of times I stood up and started literally screaming and flexing in happiness when reading never really compared to the anime. But yes the anime is great with hype moments too

I love the anime don't get me wrong but an anime has to be an absolute masterpiece to surpass the manga. The manga is almost always the superior form of the stories they're telling. I love the manga and I also love the anime. You can love both.

    The anime is awesome and I cannot wait for another season. But I want to add, that when I continued the story via the manga, the hype was there too. I remember making a lot of noises while reading it - shouting and laughing because it managed to surprise and enrapture me so much with its story.

    Soo many people hate on this show, idk why tho. Listen I've watched hajime no ippo, kuroko no baske and many other sports anime but I've never seen anything like haikyu, yeah they might be better in terms of animation (hajimenoippo) or in story but the fucking hype and comfort that haikyu gives uffff it's fucking unmatchable

    1:42 sir-i have been laughing for 23 business days that had no right being this funny-
    And yes I AM a member of that part of the fandom as well (earlier in a simping way now just in a "I adore him and he is a comfort character and this dork deserves the fucking world and would die to protect him-" ) but im also in the part of the fandom where I'll randomly start psycho analysing the characters and their dynamics with each other and different team dynamics and comparing them to each other in the middle of my science exam (I kid you not this is smthng that happened I almost went over the time limit)

    Haikyuu was sadly (for me) put under the same category as Free, or Yuri on Ice. Where its just a bunch of hot guys playing a sport with very little actual plot. I watched it and soon realized it was its own thing. Watching Season 1-2 on Netflix helped as i could just binge it without getting ads. Season 3 was great, i watched it in a single night. Season 4 was amazing as well, showing how much this little orange rascal has grown up in less than a year and giving a few of the best moments in the show. Tanaka shined, Hinata shined as well in so many ways both in Part 1 and 2, we have the absolute teamwork that is Karasuno, and just Inarizaki as a whole. Its a good watch and i cant recommend it enough. And sadly yes... much of the fandom is just them creaming to the sight of Oikawa... but you get past that and theres still people who enjoy the show for what it is and will have similar moments of hype. Also for anyone who gets this and which episode exactly, nice! "It's Mini Spider-Man!"

    I think that the anime delivers important scenes better than the manga, but everything else the manga is better, specialy the repeated use of the same animation. The only repeated animation that i liked was the cut shot from Bokuto and Tanaka.
