- The passing of Al Royal is marked by warm goodbyes from friends and family, including sister-in law Ruth (new cast member Jackee), whose arrival at a time of need may be as much for her own need as for Victoria's. Victoria: Della Reese. Shag: Slappy White.
This episode originally aired November 27, 1991, and was the first episode to be filmed after the death of Redd Foxx.

Every time they were on screen together Redd & Della were pure undeniable MAGIC. They made this marriage so realistic. You would have thought you were watching a real life couple. Rest in paradise to them both….and to sweet Naya❤
Yep, Della talked about that as well citing the good chemistry her and Redd had and loved how we got to see him become a married man with grandkids, something that showed the evolution of his acting skills.

@@raecilee6393 She and her 5-year-old son went boating two years years ago. She did not put the acre down on the boat and they were swimming and the boat was sailing away. She swam towards the boat to catch up with it she got her son on there but she did not make it because she was exhausted so she drowned.

I Watched this series after watching Eddie Murphy’s interview .
Red Fox is the greatest comedian! So sad he died on the show, at least he was doing something he loved. Eddie said people thought he was just joking, but he had a heart attack.
I remember my parents loving Red Fox and my Dad had a similar personality and our family loved watching Sanford and son. Keep on resting in peace Red Fox.
That was so nice. They honored him on this show with this episode.

He was always faking the heart attacks on Sanford and Son and they thought he was doing it again. This time, it was real, and sadly, claimed his life.

Yep, it goes hand in hand with her acting in this episode. She was not happy that Redd was not phased out in death rather than 'Al died while bowling, Ruth wants to move in, new life for all' style they went on with. She even wanted some references to him such as 'remember what your grandfather said/father said style dialogue here and there'. The last taped episode that was unaired could have dived into that slightly when Victoria was bored and ended up getting a new job that she was later fired from.
@@GSU2004 They just wanted to get it over with and done, like with Dolph Sweet on Gimme A Break! They could've had more references to Al in later episodes as a tribute.
@@sha11235 Yep, even when the series hit 100 episodes where Nell came out saying 'you just watched the 100th episode of Gimme A Break, thanks to all of you for five glorious years' and I remember in the comments on that episode, we're like you all could have said something like, 'you just watched the 100th episode of Gimme A Break, Dolph we know you're celebrating up in heaven with us, thanks for 5 glorious years, here's to many more', something like that.
Also Gimme A Break really lost its way in the last season, the show was all over the place with new characters and more.

Della was not happy that Redd was simply written out and forgotten about. She was expecting it to be at least a two parter with 'Al' in the hospital after an accident or health issue not 'Al's dead, meet Ruth, life goes on' as they did with this continuation. She admitted in later interviews that she was not going to come back if the show got a second season. While ratings were down, with Della being out, that was the death nail of the series.
Actually, it was Redd Foxx's death that was the final nail in the coffin for the series.
I'm sure they could not find anyone suitable to replace Foxx in the 'Al Royal' character or a proper storyline for the character to continue, which best explains the reason why they had to kill it off. Because of Mr. Foxx's death, the ratings never recovered, leaving CBS with no alternative but to pull the plug on 'The Royal Family'. So sad and a shame that the show had to end that way.
@@stevieboy247 I binged the entire season of the series recently on here and some of the post Redd episodes were enjoyable but you could tell this was Redd's show, hands down. You are correct, there's no Royal Family without Redd. Some probably thought either John Amos or Sherman Hemsley could fill in those shoes but they couldn't even if they tried (and both of those men are good actors too).

It was great to see Don "Bubba" Bexley and Melvin "Slappy" White amongst the mourners. Shame Lawanda Page and Demond Wilson were not there amongst the Sanford and Son Alumni. Great tribute none the less to a brilliantly talented and funny actor.

I heard somewhere that Della Reese say that she was angry that this was not a 2 part episode where Al was in hospital and then they had the funeral in the next episode, but they just wrote him out and that was it. Still, this was a great way to write him out, especially the slideshow at the end.

I know it's Louis Armstrong singing the song at the end, but for some reason, his voice reminds me of Redd's.
I remember when I saw this episode on CBS as a child in 1991, I thought Redd was the actual singer until my grandparents said that was Louis Armstrong but it felt like Redd's spirit.

I actually thought it was Redd Foxx 's voice seeing this a few days ago for the first time ever, this show that is, thought at 39 yrs old I would finally look up this last work of Redd Foxx, I mean. I knew this show did exist but now I'm finally seeing it, the character wasn't far of Fred Sanford and yes, Redd Foxx and Louie Armstrongs voice is wildy uncanny, good Jesus.
Omg me too. One day our teacher play this song in the class. And then I got up and told the teacher I know who sings this song it's Redd Foxx and then my teacher was like no it's Louis Armstrong. I just couldn't believe her till this day I still think it's Redd Foxx. RIP Mr Foxx 🙏
Never saw this show when it was on…. I listened to a documentary on his life and found it. Glad I did. After learning the circumstances around his passing it made it even more real. Thank you for all the laughs sir.
In a perfect world where Redd Foxx lived to be 100 and The Royal Family ran for 7 seasons, let's face it - LaWanda Page should have played Victoria's sister. Oh the hilarity that would've been!
Absolutely, but don't forget, Redd died at 66. Even with 7 seasons, he would have bene 73 at the end of the production, a good time to retire with a second successful series under his belt after so many flops since Sanford and Son went off. He deserved that

@@justaylor1269 No one said the show lasted seven seasons, it probably would have if Foxx did not die in the beginning. I need for folks to read for comprehension not to respond. This show was a ratings hit for the 1991-1992 TV season. And ratings crashed after he left, this was his show and you saw that in the epsidoes after his death, no one watched and it was done. Della was done as noted during interviews after the cancelation.

I've been watching The Royal Family episodes and this episode put tears to my eyes knowing that Redd Foxx passed away 33 years ago!!...Rest In Peace Redd!! 🌹

18:08 ironically they made Ruth into Victoria's daughter in the other episodes she appears on instead of her half sister.
They should have did the daughter storyline instead of the half sister pilot as Della and Jackee was too far apart in age for that to even seem realistic. Della and Jackee were mother and daughter on 227 so they should have worked with that. Jackee was available after the cancellation of 227 and many people were looking for things to put her on so they tossed her over here. Jackee did not have the star power that Redd Foxx had. The show never recovered in the ratings when Redd died despite best efforts.

Yes they did. I felt she should have been the daughter from the start. They did that in Tyler Perry's house of Payne. Clarence was their son and became their nephew once Calvin came on the show which made more sense he looked more like Ella & Curtis.
@@ebonyepps2261 Yep, many shows often do this on pilots where people were not connected initially or connected in a different way. On the 227 pilot, Calvin didn't live in 227 and he wasn't Pearl's grandson then it was later written as he lived with her as her grandson. I remember the 10 episode pilot run of House of Payne where CJ was their son and then Calvin became the son in the new season. It made much better sense to show the extended family dynamic that Tyler wanted to do. Calvin had typical post-college dropout issues of finding suitable employment, figuring out what he wanted to do, finding love and more; good storylines were created from that. CJ had to deal with a drug addict wife and struggling to keep his family together. One thing I love what Good Times and Roseanne ushered in was the 'family is not perfect but we're all in this together' shtick that is much more relatable than these picture perfect families. Royal Family was a good example of this as well with Redd and Della having to see their empty nest get full again.

This is the first time seeing this show when it aired. It was also the first time seeing Bubba & Slappy since their Sanford & Son days. Larenz & Naya ended up being the breakout stars . I wonder what ever happened to the eldest daughter Sylver Gregory who disappeared from acting. RIP to the legends Redd Foxx and Della Reese, and Bubba & Slappy.

So in this episode Jackee Harry plays the half sister of Della Reese. I’ve seen a bunch of episodes with Jackee in it b4 this particular one & she plays as Della Reese’s daughter & the sister of Elizabeth 😂. Definitely like her as the daughter better

I had never heard about this show until last night when I was watching a dean Martin roast for redd for the hundredth time. I decided to look up some facts about redd and saw this show mentioned. I've been a huge Redd Foxx fan my entire life. And Della Reese was such a beautiful person that radiated love you can't help but love her. I knew Redd died when filming this series but didn't know which episode. I also didn't expect to have these feelings I'm having right now. I was fortunate enough to have seen Redd live in one of his shows and at his club. Both times I was way too young to have been there according to the powers that be. As rough and gruff as he was he gave those around him a feeling of caring and friendship. I thought it was cool that slappy and Reynaldo were there to show their love. I'm surprised Eddy Murphy didn't do a cameo. Respect to Eddy for the funeral arrangements and for keeping these legends of comedy on the movie screens. Harlem Nights is without a doubt the funniest movie made in my lifetime. There are generations that would not know anything about the players you cast in that movie and their contributions to comedy as we know it.Rip Red,Slappy,Reynaldo,Della and the others of your generation that have made this world a happier place. You are loved and missed

Nope you’re spot on. The producers put the show on a 5 month break after episode 8 to “retool” it. Guessing they decided Ruth worked better as Victoria’s daughter. I think the switch was right

So confusing 😕 I think that's why the show didn't last after Redd Foxx kind just fell all over the place.
Its sad and ironic how redd died the same age and way his first tv character fred was!😢 he was having a real one during the filming of this episode and everybody just thought he was doing his famous fred character but he wasn't and passed on set!😢 rip to the best!!

@toreradojaojo Even though John Ritters last tv show 8 Simple Rules lasted nearly 2 years after his death this is a bit like that show, only difference is this show only lasted about 7 more episodes, Legendary Comedians who got their fame on 2 70s hit sitcoms passes away and their new show is never the same again, yes this show had potential as well as 8 Simple Rules. RIP Redd Foxx and John Ritter.
