When the swan theme progresses from the E flat to the C, it just takes me to another world. Salonen’s performance of Sibelius 5 continues to be the best interpretation of this work, no matter what orchestra.
I'm always curious how conductors will interpret those last two chords: all the players have regular quarter notes, but the timpani's notes are preceded by graces - so, I've heard some recordings where the timps anticipate the last two strikes by a split second, which can be very cool.
