This song always makes me kinda sad, the melancolic phase and the lyrics always get me.
In general, all the songs of the Republicans are rather sad. They are trying to inspire some hope, some fighting spirit. But, at the same time, they are saturated with some kind of sadness. This song, for example, sounds like it makes you imagine how a small group of republican I-15s enter into an unequal battle with the Francoist Messerschmidts, and there is no hope that at least one "Snub-nosed" (Spanish nickname for I-15) will return to base .
Perhaps this is due to the fact that in reality the Republicans were devastatingly losing any battle from 1937 until the end of the war. Perhaps the people who composed these songs knew perfectly well where everything was going, and therefore the songs turned out to be sad.

Actually the republic had lost the war since the very first day and they knew that. Their only hope was that the WWII would start before the civil war ended and thus led to an internationalization of the conflict. With the aide of the allies against fascism, they'd have had a chance.

To anyone asking, Chato were the nicknames given to the I-15 by the spanish, others nicknames were Mosca=Fly by the republicans to the I-16 and Rata=Rat by the nationalist and Kathyuska to the SB-2 bombers by the republicans
I wonder if there were any Spanish nicknames for German / Italian aircraft? Simply, I only heard about nicknames for Soviet aircraft.
And yes, a small correction :) The correct name for "Katyushka" is SB (High-speed bomber). Simply, many different engines were installed on this aircraft, and in order to distinguish aircraft with different flight characteristics, they came up with the following naming system: (aircraft name) - (number of engines) (name of engines). A modification of the SB-2M-100A was sent to Spain - SB with two M-100A engines.

No, that's a Chato. The Mosca were the Polikarpov I-16, and the plane in the video it's a Polikarpov I-15, called in Spain "Chato".
The I-16 was also called Rata, their were a lot of nicknames for the planes, there is no one definitive nickname.
