  • 2002 BMW 6-Cylinder ENGINE (3.2 litre BMW M3) PRODUCTION. In the factory of the 2002 BMW M3, several critical stages of the engine assembly process take place. It begins with work on the engine block, lifted by a precision crane to be correctly positioned on the assembly line. Next, a precision machine engraves a serial number on the engine block to ensure traceability and quality control. The crankshaft is installed inside the block, using precision equipment for proper alignment.
The crankshaft is lubricated to ensure operation without friction, preventing premature wear. The installation of the pistons in the engine block requires careful inspection of the pistons’ quality and integrity. The valves are installed in the cylinder head, followed by the installation of the valve springs, essential for the proper functioning of the engine.
The final assembly of the cylinder head involves precise tightening of bolts to ensure proper alignment and securing of all components. The timing chain is installed to synchronize the camshaft’s movement with the crankshaft. The oil pump, crucial for circulating engine oil, is installed at the front of the engine.
The camshafts are checked and installed on the top of the engine, ensuring they are properly aligned and secured. Lubrication of the camshafts is essential to prevent wear and ensure efficient operation. Finally, a camshaft rotation test is performed to verify that it rotates freely and without obstructions, confirming correct installation and alignment.

The M3 E46 was presented in 2000 with the new 3.2-litre engine, in the six-cylinder in-line configuration signed S54B32, with a power of 343 HP at 7,900 rpm and a torque of 365 Nm at 4,900 rpm /min. It is therefore characterized by a high specific power, equal to approximately 107 horsepower/litre, a notable value for a naturally aspirated engine, also achieved thanks to the new generation phase variator, called Double VANOS, for both the intake and the exhaust. In addition to this, the power supply was characterized by the presence of six throttle bodies. This allowed it to reach a self-limited 250 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.
The new M3 was equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but starting from 2001, it was equipped with the new robotized gearbox, called SMG II (acronym for second generation Sequenzielles Motorsport Getriebe), born from BMW's experience in Formula 1, which it allowed you to change gear in 80 milliseconds without having to use the clutch pedal, operated by electro-hydraulic actuators, like the gears; it was then possible to vary the speed, and therefore the "smoothness" or otherwise, of the gear changes. "Launch control" was also available, which allowed the engine to be set to gather maximum power for the fastest acceleration.

It was available with both a coupé and a cabrio body: it was not produced as a sedan, however, since in this version, the previous M3 E36 met with less acceptance among customers: subsequently, after a first presentation in 2001 as a concept car, in March In 2003 the M3 was also proposed in a setup more similar to a racing car, namely the CSL (Coupé Sport Lightweight) version, achieved thanks to a notable weight reduction of 110 kg with the use of different materials, and an increase in power up to 360 HP.
The first in particular thanks to the use of reinforced carbon fiber for the roof, the seat shells, the bumpers and the rear bonnet, eliminating the radio and air conditioning and fitting new 19' aluminum wheels which allow a saving of around 11 kg.
New larger brake discs were then fitted (345 mm instead of 325 mm). The engine revised with new camshafts and valves, new more powerful control units and improved intake
