  • This week my friend Reiss brought his Revox B77 reel to reel tape machine to my studio so we decided to hook it up to my SSL SiX mixer and use it as a real tape delay!

Only this week I purchased a Revox B77 4 track on ebay. It was described as good condition with no faults and that is exactly how it is. So I am really happy about that. It came with a 10 1/2 in spool of tape. I did some test recordings from my flac downloads and Linn Jazz radio. The recordings are excellent When switching from source to tape there is a very very small drop in the top end. Finding the correct tape might improve that. I read a comment below saying that tape machines are noisy. NOT at all. I have listened to my recordings through my Quad ESL57's and was not aware of any tape hiss, even though I expected there would be a slight background hiss. Like your young friend I am also on a learning curve. I am now looking at microphones as I would like to make some live recordings at local events. There is a lot to learn...and also one needs a deep pocket! By the time you read this hopefully the Revox is working as it should. R.

Glad you’re enjoying your Revox. Thanks for the tips about which tape worked best on your machine. Would be great if you did a video about it to help other users. 😀😀

Maybe one day...but I'm a bit nervous doing those things. I have ordered a reel of tape LPR 35 from Thomann in Germany to evaluate.

@@davespeakmanmusic Hello again. I can recommend the LPR 35 tape from Thomann in Germany for the Revox B77. Recently I replaced the poor quality RCA phono sockets on the back with gold plated ones. The job was a bit fiddly but well worth it in my case as the sockets were not making good contact with the plugs. At the same time I had to replace the VU meter bulbs as one of them had blown.

What is the style of electric guitar music played please? ...Reminds me of a section on Chill Out on KLF album and I cannot find any similar guitar music just "Blues" stuff that doesn't grab me.

Do tape machines have a lot of noise when you record into them?
