If you've ever owned a piece of property, most basement doors are setup that way. As for not showing it, they probably were better off not bringing it up.

I found all this pretty bizarre when I first heard about it, it's not something we are culturally familiar with here in Australia. Having learned a bit more it's starting to make sense, seems like a great way to forge bonds, make contacts, undergo personal development, learn leadership skills etc.
