*Metal is heavier than rock*
Smash like so we can all become elements on the periodic table
Nik Nocturnillium
metal is heavier than my mom
facts
There's a reason metal is called metal and not heavy rock
That is true.
there are so many rap fans who call anything with a guitar "rock"
And I hate it
im 100% convinced its normies who labeled modern "rock", this stuff is for SURE metal
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me I don't think he shat on rap at all. He's just stating how rap people call anything with guitar rock. And tbh I think he's kinda right. Cause all the rap kids are the ones stuck on one genre and these pop ones listen to anything the media tells them to lol
But guitars are made out of wood
@@NikNocturnal Dad joke
Peace
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,
Trying to understand everyone’s terminology for metal/rock is like learning quantum mechanics.
Yes, math scary
“If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.”
-Richard Feynman
I mean at least quantum mechanics has definitive answers. There's just no understanding music genre terminology.
state of music education in NA
@@chasechilders3672 naw its actually super simple. Metal is a subgenre of Rock. So by definition it is Rock.
At the end of the day, if a song sounds good to you then it is good.
Doesnt matter if it sounds exactly like old rock/metal or really modern.
yeah it heavily depends on personal taste
Agree!
I absolutely agree, because music taste is subjective. But on the other hand it should be placed in correct genres so it's easier to find what you are in the mood to listen to.
Good music is good music
Exactly.
As a person who will listen to pretty much anything that sounds good, I like how diverse rock has become. There is something for everyone, and that’s great.
@@Azrayl that’s fine that you think that, but one mans trash buddy
@Arachebae Honestly as someone who likes a wide variety of music, I don't listen to any rock past the 2000s. Or really before the 80s, but for different reasons. Rock music nowadays is admittedly fairly stale and bands are using pop elements to get something new to it, while rock that's older is just not for me. I mostly listen to rap, extreme metal, experimental rock and electronic experimental music
@@man4437 that’s a fair assessment, and I can get behind that opinion. But I’ve always had a rule when listening to new music. It’s called the 3 pros rule. I listen to an album from an artist, and if I can’t find 3 things in the album that I like, I feel fair saying I don’t like it. I’ve found a lot of music that I like that I previously would’ve wrote off.
@@paxtongerhart6863 Good point. I listen to all kinds of stuff too. And I also have a rule where I listen to like 10 songs of an artist I dont exactly like from different albums/eras/years to see if I actually enjoy something. If I dont, well, maybe it really isnt for me, but to be honest I almost always find at least one song/sound they go for thats kinda good.
@@laurachiriac1336 yeah there’s very few artists that I entirely dislike. There’s usually at least one or two songs that I like
Basically anything with guitars but considered too soft for metal
Makes sense lol.
This but the other way around.
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me I don't think anyone calls ID rock? At most they're called alt-rock, which is already a very loose genre to begin with
More like, basically anything considered slightly edgier than any pop tune
lol gonna delete my comment now
I know Muse has lots of pop and electronic elements, but if you have ever seen them live, you'd conclude that they are ultimately a rock band.
Even The 2nd Law and Simulation Theory still very much had good amounts of pure alt rock and pop rock
rock is literally everything from softpop with an electric guitar to extreme metal.
Rock is like a schrödingers cat, it's rock and isn't rock at the same time
Perfect analogy actually lol
That would only apply until you listen to it. At that point the state is known, and it's crap.
Maneskin is probably the most "classic rock" sounding rock band rn, their Eurovision song "Zitti e Buoni" reeeeeeeeally hits those vibes
Yes, but sadly with each new song they put out, they get further away from that sound.
@@sebastianpacheco9846 They literally released only one song after the album "Zitti e Buoni" is in
Listen to We Are Harlot
Greta Van Fleet
@@juicicles5881 Copycats don't count.
Spotify playlists are basically pop and rap playlists influenced by Billboard (managed by pop and rap lovers, obviously), so for them, everything else that has an electric guitar = rock, there's no more genres for them.
MÅNESKIN -ZITTI E BUONI
Song that won eurovision and is really energetic, can be considered as rock, thank you! :3
The thing is that pop punk and late 2010s emo rap has very much influenced the rock scene of today. It’s not as clear cut as it was during the early, mid and late 00s were you would listen to a band like the Foo Fighters or Audioslave and go “oh yeah, they’re rock”. Now everything is becoming more fused and mixed together. Which isn’t a bad thing, it just makes it harder to categorize what’s a rock song now and what’s a lower end metal song or a pop song with guitars.
Especially with so much pop being infused into metal. The three kind of become one in a way.
@@Kaladin_Stormblessed yeah mainstream metal is so pop its not funny anymore
At least audioslave have a legendary frontmen..same with foo fighter maybe
Like Nothing, Nowhere his emo rap is absolutely amazing. He’s very underrated.
F in chat for Rock music, I'll be sticking to the Classics for sure. Granted Metal isn't innocent either I love Spiritbox it's great but when Courtney is just doing cleans it's Poppier than Poppys Nu Metal.
Metal musician is confused by what modern rock is.
Fixed title
True, but title then is too long D:
“Metal Musician is confused by Modern Rock”
You should try The Warning. They are 3 mexican sisters doing hard rock and it sounds so cool. It's a little bit radio friendly but still good. I personally recommend the new ep, specifically the song named Z or the one named Animosity.
Disciple goes hard.
Great live band too
You glanced over Foals for a few seconds, but as a long time metal listener, please give them a listen! They have little metal influence but by god are they a phenomenol band. 5 dedicated musicians pumping out extremely consistent, well-composed albums.
Yes!!! Commented something similar myself, Foals are brilliant.
I broke my nose in a Foals mosh pit and I guess that's pretty metal
yeah, stuff of theirs like inhaler is such a vibe
Yo, that Gojira scrape is the proper way to start a tune. Guess I'm a fan of Wolfgang/Mammoth now. 😅😂😂
TRUE
Hs music is really good
Yeah, it’s not my style personally but it’s pretty cool
@@thelostpsychosis any album suggestions?
He’s a big periphery fan too and frequently comments on their stuff
Its nothing like old school rock but thats what makes it great. If bands still sounded like they did in the 80s it would be so boring and mundane and music would never progress
But I'm old and mundane
@@NikNocturnal lmfao 🤣
@@NikNocturnal so basicially greta van fleet then?
@@NikNocturnal I'm also old school with my music taste it needs that feel of certainly to clarify what genre it falls into can't have rock sound like metal and then hard rock like metalcore or death metal. Then I can just be called a Rocket bangs head to Rock music like a Metal head bangs head to death metal.
You call this progress? It's like taking a guitar off Slash and giving it to a Neanderthal that's just been thawed out from a block of ice.
I'm pretty fine with the fact that this playlist contains many different styles/subgenres (pop/punk, Post-Hardcore, rap/rock). I believe this is quite better for rock/metal than its earlier state which was pushing a specific style till it's tiresome (e.g. grunge, nu metal, hair metal). And the best part is that the playlists at least aren't dominated by painfully bland artists (though some of them are, lol).
I think Royal Blood are one of the best rock bands out there. Its just two guys, the bassist/singer and the drummer. They are playing hard rock / alternative rock / garage rock. Honorable mention: Don Broco
Don Broco & Royal Blood are both fantastic, possibly my two favourite albums this year
love them, they remind me of some edm type beats and alternative (my two favorite genres)
Yeah, wanted to say something about them heh. They're really great! I also like Reignwolf!
Never thought I'd see Nothing, Nowhere. mentioned in a Nik video... his old stuff is an INCREDIBLE mix of rap and midwest emo.
His new record has a lot of punk/grunge influences, specially the song Death with a breakdown lol it's amazing how he has changed his sound but still kept his style there.
@@HEADASSLOOKINGAHHH Yeah.. his stuff after Ruiner isn't my thing personally, Reaper was peak N,N. Either way I recommend people check him out, he's a great artist
But I can't find them
@@NikNocturnal check out his stuff with Travis Barker.. not bad at all
Yes!! N, N has been underrated for years. Great guitarist too if you check out his live one-take tracks. Nik you have to check out the track "Death" for a nice little breakdown.
Gotta love Nothing but Thieves, f***in amazing band. Broken Machine is a masterpiece
I discovered them this year and became immediately fan. I would describe them as a mixture of Led Zeppelin and Muse but being 100% fresh and new.
Agree! Amazing songs.
The vocals are absolutely top tier
I heard a few things from them years back when they had a slightly different sound (Sorry, Amsterdam), but Futureproof has a sick, grindy tone to it
Yeah, absolutely. Plus Connors voice is just insanely good!
I feel modern rock like many genres now is very eclectic sounding. For more classically sounding rock groups I would check out Halestorm, Greta Van Fleet, or Billy Talent
My favorite "new" rock band is Starcrawler.
Highly Suspect and Bad Flower too!
Dirty honey and Dorothy are some of my favorite new rock bands
there’s a person named nothing,nowhere.
His genre is emo rap
Nothing Nowhere!!! :)
Holy crap it's actually you. I LOVE YOUR MUSIC KEEP IT UP!!!!
Seems like nowadays anything, that has overdriven guitar in it, counts as rock
Guitar go brrrrr
Now if we can get some good vocals with minimal mixing we're good, honestly most guitar in most new songs sounds good, then the singer opens his/her mouth..
Back in the days it was considered grunge, and metal even before.
Time goes on, just the names are changing
@@simonebaffi9079 early grunge and nu metal was way better than anything related to them nowadays
I mean, yeah. As has always been the case.
The alternative and emo scene right now is absolutely thriving. I can’t be more proud of Poorstacey, Ghost Killer Entertainment, Jeris Johnson, Yungblood, and BMTH is helping bring all of these guys into the spotlight while also taking inspiration from them. It’s a great time to be a fan of this style.
yesss! MGK upto some extent too
@@rithvikO_o MGK definitely helped influence the style! I don’t think his comments about Slipknot where great at all and I think he stepped out of line, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy his rock music. It’s great and it’s forward-thinking.
And then Slipknot just put out a song recently that doesn’t sound any different than anything else they’ve done since 2014 and I got pretty disappointed. Oh well. I still would probably take Slipknot’s side on the matter, but they’ve gotta get heavier. Corey’s screams compared to people like Spencer Charnas, Courtney LaPlante, Will Ramos, etc? It’s laughable.
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me My favorite non-metal album ever is The Black Parade by MCR. It’s an absolute masterpiece Imo.
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me Early AFI is killer man.

The best rock, hard rock, and metal is coming out of Japan, BAND-MAID, Lovebites, Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Trident, and Hanabie.
Check out Glim Spanky 愚か者たち for a pretty old school and catchy rock song from japan.

As a metalhead, I think Nothing But Thieves are so fucking good!
"Can you afford to be an individual" BANGER!!!
I love them!
"Well, there's guitars"
- Nik Nocturnal
^^^ Big brain conclusion
Nothing but Thieves is amazing rock and definitely some of their songs have slight metal elements lately!
There’s also the fact that a lot of people categorise indie as rock or horror core as metal. I’ve got nothing against these genres but can be a bit frustrating when I’m trying to find certain new songs.
Nik, Måneskin actually won the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest with their song Zitti E Buoni, and the rock band Blind Channel from Finland got 6th with their song Dark Side
I need to watch Eurovision
@@NikNocturnal maybe do a reaction video to both songs, that would be awesome. And yes Eurovision is no stranger to metal, in 2018 the band AWS represented Hungary in the contest with a Post Hardcore song called Viszlát Nyár.
Blind Channel is NU-metal not rock
Blind Channel has songs in a game called Wreckfest, that game has a pretty solid soundtrack
Also FlatOut 2 (has songs from Papa Roach, Rob Zombie, Megadeath etc.) which was made by the same devs as Wreckfest
@@NikNocturnal And The Rasmus were Finland's entry this year ... Sadly with a very subpar song by their standards.
Yoo I'm glad Nothing But Thieves was included in this man. :D I've really gotten into these guys, give their back catalog a spin whenever you get the chance to. They're like, 'modern rock' mixed with other influences as well. Their 2017 album Broken Machine would be a pretty good place to start imo. Love your content my guy!
They’re dope!
They are great, the mixing on their albums is always perfect
Nothing But Thieves is such an amazing band!
rock is a very broad genre, it's like saying "classical" music. the term classical denotes dozens of styles, several eras, different continents and countries, but classical music has certain defining characteristics. same thing with rock. rock and roll would be more blues, where as hardcore is still rock but a very different form that has its own individual tradition
Måneskin means moonshine in danish, but not like the alcohol. But literally like the light that we see from the moon
Oh, moons are pretty good
That’s an odd choice for an Italian band
@@evilemuempire9550 I was thinking that too
@@evilemuempire9550 the bass player is half Danish
@@kaspersrensen3540 That makes a lot more sense then, though I suppose there are a lot of American bands that take Scandinavian names anyways
The only rock band I really listen to now would be Palaye Royale. Their album The Bastards really nailed it.
Seriously dope band.
FINALLY OTHER PEOPLE THAT KNOW THEM! They're so good and criminally underrated. So excited to see them with YUNGBLUD next year!
honestly i specifically hate that band, they are so bad imo. Sounds like modern more generic adema mixed with pop from the few songs i heard
They are
My only issue with them is their attitude: they cancelled their headlining dates, which were already delayed by 2 years, just to be a support for Yungblud. Honestly one of the biggest dick move I’ve ever seen just for a couple more bucks.
nothing but thieves are one of my favourite bands, absolutely love their songs. Royal blood are the obvious modern rock band to me, probably my favourite rock band. Little band I found recently called moriaty which are fucking so cool, but if you want proper rock guitar solos, I would say the band is inglorious right now. Listen to the solo in she won't let you go by inglorious, it's like slash but cleaner and more shreddy, but by no means too much. These are all British bands, the rock scene in the UK is really good right now. Also the two piece rock band is getting big in the UK, royal blood and moriaty are both two piece bands with huge sounds. You've also got like death from above, they're Canadian but again, two piece rock band with a huge sound.
This is the perfect example or encapsulation of my relationship with “Lacuna Coil” when you said “These are basically metal heads that want to play rock songs”. Because when they first started, they were more of a streamlined version of Katatonia with My Dying Bride (I say that in a good way). But then they pretty much veered into, well modern rock. Part of me wished that they would have continued to evolve more towards that doom/gloom/goth type of playing with the ambient/melodic approach.
It gets serious when anyone opens Paint.
Facts
I actually enjoy a lot of Slash and Myles Kennedy’s catalog.
Same.
They are the only artists i rely on .
Stupidly underrated post
Rock is now anything with an actual guitar. The bar is literally buried at this point
Nothing nowhere, is absolutely amazing! Especially, his older albums.
Guess I gotta check out some Mammoth. Wolfgang starting out with a Gojira pickscrape? Hells yeah! Gojira rules!!! 🤘🤘🤘
it's kinda like the story to Brutal Legend, where the guy sets up for a rock concert and the band ends up playing some really poppy shit, that's what a lot of this was... sad how Rock has gotten like this.
ROCK gives me energy.
BAND MAID gives me energy.
BAND MAID Is ROCK.
Oh hell yes, BAND-MAID is life 🤘💯
If anything, the "rock" playlist should be split into a mix of metal, punk, and rock.
The only problem is, these genre mix A LOT. Pop punk is punk and alt-rock together. Metalcore is metal and hardcore punk together, etc. And a lot of bands like Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach (maybe?), do both alt-metal and alt-rock.
The breakdown is the new guitar solo. What a wild new world this is, eh?
Anyhow, I think simply that modern rock is now just so different from the classic version that saying one is objectively better than the other is moot. I don't have any problem with it, there's some amazing newer bands out there now especially if one leans towards the more flamboyant emo-alt side of things - Palaye Royale, Badflower, Måneskin, etc. and the electro-flavored stuff like Starset or Nothing More. Which I do.
All the same, I don't begrudge anyone who doesn't find anything satisfying in the current rock world - I'm sure people felt the same way when stuff like the Beatles and Buddy Holly gave way to Grand Funk Railroad and Bad Company.
Some other kick ass modern bands are cleopatrick, highly suspect, grandson. They all have so much grime, I just consider them dirt or grime rock 😂
Also not to mention, there are kickass rock bands from across the lands that sound more rock than some north american guys as well.
I miss guitar solos
Agreed
@Muck Hard disagree. It’s a buildup and a release of tension to hype people up and it adds such a great energy to the song. I LOVE breakdowns, and I say this as someone who has a distaste for jumpscares in horror films, and prefers more atmospheric horror.
stand atlantic is one of the best bands of these new pop punk scene, listen to their record called skinny dipping, it's so good!!
I appreciate you doing this I found a few new bands that are new to my field of music.
The best rock band currently is from Japan. Band Maid. They play with so many genres. You'd probably love the unseen world album
Japan releasing both the weirdest and the best bangers
check out babymetal too
Yeah Japan is a great and weird place at the same time. I guess there is a cost for having great bands like band maid and Babymetal and that cost is known as anime
@@entitledkidyourtoysaremine930 i dont have a problem with anime but it's so damn popular and its everywhere and i dont give a damn
I think when it all comes down to it, people don’t actually know what rock is. When I think of rock today, I think of black veil brides, alter bridge, shinedown, nickleback, airbourne. Stuff like that, whether or not it’s called hard rock or not. Even though a lot of the stuff I named is metal influenced also. Tremonti and sevendust could be considered hard rock or rock with metal influences.
i just think of anything with guitar bass drum set up is rock, may be too broad of a definition tho
I feel like sevendust is whatever the hell they want to be.
those are all extremely mid or below average bands
Breaking Benjamin too
I'd not but black veil brides as Rock music maybe Andy biersack on his own as Rock artist but the band is more metal than Rock looking at songs like fallen angles, knives and pens, ect. But like all bands that start off metal or hardcore they probably have gone over to Rock. Example would be how bmth went from hardcore to electronic Rock.
They forced the man to make a whole chart
You cant talk about rock and not mention Poppy's new album Flux. It has 90s alternative rock written all over it and it sounds fantastic.
Great video as always!
6:44 that is pronounced like a soft or dragged out o in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The name means moonshine (not the alcoholic kind, but the poetic). They are the Italian band that won Eurovision last time. The girl in the band are from Denmark I believe and she got to name the band.
Love from Sweden!
My dude killed off Maneskin in the intro where half the instruments are still missing :/
haha so true
aye yo, now this is epic
:D
I'd love to hear your take on a band like Foals - they've some heavy songs and some not so heavy songs, very much in the indie vein but goes into heavier rock, but they're really creative and underrated imo
You hear a guitar with any distortion whatsover, its rock nowadays. I used to only listen to Rock when I was a teen but I can't anymore, just feels like pop to me now lol. Metal babyyyyyy
You definitely should record a single video only listening to Måneskin, cause they represente a side of rock that not everyone gets at first. Whether you like them or not, just give it a try.
You could listen to Lividi sui Gomiti, For Your Love, Zitti e Buoni, close to the top, coraline, vent'anni
FOALS are actually fantastic live. Saw em a few years ago.

That's hilarious surf curse was on this list and you roasted it. I grew up playing shows with them all the time in the LA garage rock music scene back in high school. That made me chuckle because all of the music was basically exactly like that XD
Watching this reminds me of getting back to metal after 15 years playing jazz and blues guitar .
I have no clue what’s going on in metal today so that’s why I subbed to your channel to see what’s up. What is this “core” stuff? 😂
Last metal record I listened to was Children of bodom - Are you dead yet.
You know what, most of it was not even too bad at all, but I agree, what the hell is Rock?
I am also ????????????
Nothing, Nowhere has some sadddd songs man
man, love you:) your reactions are awesome
Music in general, because of how many distinct genres we have, is going to see a *bunch* of mixes. Metal alone has had multple multiple different things that have come in to influence it, from Symphony Orchestra, Opera, to Electronic all coming in and spicing up the genre. Genre mixing is just going to happen going forward and lines are going to get blurred. I personally like it as someone who likes multiple different things.
You should have listened to all "i wanna be your slave" the chorus rocks the hell out really ! And no metal influance !
I would actually say that rock and metal is more diverse now than it's ever been, you just have to look for it. There's lots of good bands out there right now.
You're point I came to last week when I looked at "New Rock" on spotify and I was completely disoriented and mostly by just the lack of any trends or "genres " It is very hard work to go thru it cause 50% I cant stand
Nothing but thieves is pretty sick. I listened to their discography on loop everyday for 2 years on the bus ride to college
I think the general audience is so disconnected from rock that it's just become 'the music with guitars'
Måneskin is one of my favorite bands right now and so it Nothing But Theives
Dude that chart you made had me dying. Your handwriting inspired me
I think Royal Blood could be an example of what modern rock is, its differen't from oldschool rock but still heavily based on blues and rockn'roll and is not as soft as soft rock nor heavy as metal and post hardcore
Maneskin makes some very decent rock music. They won the last Eurovision with an italian song. That shit slapped
It’s like when rappers call themselves rockstars
Theirs definitely some songs on here imma add to my list.
Its like this across so many styles of music now. The EDM umbrella is an absolute nightmare to decode and categorize as well.
