I've been 3d printing for 5 years now and tried a lot of different brands of filaments and Colorfabb has always been my favorite! It's just very reliable and has the best feel and appearance. The white pla is my choice for lithographs.

Printed, assembled and maidened the free version last week, with PLA fuselage and LW-PLA wings. Flies absolutely great. Slow and fast, little acro, no problem. Dropped an Arduino Nano and a few WS2812 LEDs into the wing. Looks great due to the opaqueness of the LW-PLA and the internal structures. Somewhat like a dragonfly wing.

  • @lightshowcommander
    @lightshowcommander 3 роки тому +2

Because some people in the comments asked. Here are my personal experiences with this build.
I am using a "Ender 3 v2" with simple black PLA (from Verbatim) (Ender 3 or 3 Pro should work quite similar).
Still in construction, but looks promising.
Created the gcode myself from the STL files with "Cura". Make sure to stick to the instruction page about the layer settings. My biggest problem was the bed adhesion. Fixed it by using a brim on some parts + blue tape.
    Estimated costs (related to Germany)
    ~ 220€ - Ender 3 v2
    ~ 15€ - Filament (~600g)
    ~ 20€ - Small stuff (ruberbands, rods)
~ 200€ - Electronics (did not puchased the cheapest (stabilizer + telemetry included))
    + remote control (already exists)
    - 2 weeks of printing (in spare time).
    - 2 months already of learning how to tweak 3D print settings (printed 3 parts twice because I was not satisfied with the result (most likely temerature, print speed and fan speed adjustments)).
So it is definitely not the quickest and cheapest way to start into the hobby, but I had a lot of fun already with my 3D printer.
And as long as the electronics do not brake, I can easily repair everything for almost no cost, just some time and effort.

Interesting idea: to demonstrate how easy and quick it is to get back in the air with one of these planes, intentionally auger in, which would start the clock, and then reprint out the parts needed and rebuild the plane. It could also be a test to compare regular PLA and LW PLA in terms of durability. Maybe do a test with PETG or TPU as well.

Just imagine a 3d printed DLG, that would be amazing! I know that composites are always the go-to material for F3K flying, but being able to 3d print out a wing, tail feathers, and a fuse would be a dream. Although there would be a lot of problems with torsional stiffness in the wing as well as having to probably lay some form of carbon spar and obviously a carbon boom, I think the price you pay to print off everything would be much cheaper than buying an outright new plane.

Great Stuff, our family 11, 13, 15 Y/o have all built foam trainers and been inspired to scratch build foam board planes. We have also crashed plenty of them as well :). 3D printed a few, but they come apart like a wine glass on concrete in a hard crash.
If I may suggest bringing the background music down a touch, it is a bit loud over the voices at the end of the videos.
Some suggestions would some more common house hold items to use like 2-liter bottles, or even an empty soda can (perhaps as a motor mount?)
A plane that collapses into its self, like a kid's expanding flashlight sword would be an awesome, and compact way to take a plane to a field.

Great planes and fun watching you build and fly. I was wondering, whether some fun snow projects are in the queue. You definitely have the right amount of snow for a lot of crazy projects. Any kind of foamboard based snow smasher would be fun to watch.
    Thanks for your content.

WHO WANTS them to come up with cool new planes made of foamboard that we can then make ourselves?

@Ordo Militaris Radio TV I agree with you colleague. They began to make just entertaining content, while earlier there was educational content. Probably a crisis of the genre (

What I'd like to see personally would be flitetest models that have both foamboard and printable versions. Foamboard for those that don't have a printer, or want something that's cheaper to replace in a crash, and STLs for those that have the printer and/or want the extra performance. A video comparing them would be an interesting watch
3D Printers aren't as expensive as they used to be, by a long-shot. Even my $150 Tarantula could print one, and that's cheaper then a nice radio. They've fallen in love with 3D printed air-frames because they've got the same performance as commercial models while still costing way less.

@@DFX2KX I've already come to the conclusion that I don't want to make light planes. They do not have enough space in the fuselage, it is very inconvenient to place electronics. Still, the practical use, as opposed to a few minutes of flight for a UA-cam video, is a different thing... A light aircraft is a problem in windy weather and a small battery capacity, hence either the inability to fly at all or a small flight time. Yes, you can come with a backpack of batteries, but not everyone is comfortable.

I’d love to see a video on the 3D printed EDF Vulcan. 3D printing is coming a long way!

Cant wait to print this, haven’t printed a RC plane because all the free versions so far didn’t look promising enough until now with this video. Going to have to figure out what motor to run though

Guys, print LW PLA with two outer Layers - in the end it‘s the same weight like lingle layer normal PLA, but way stronger and durable :-)
Printed a Blackwing in this way, works great!

Swap the wings between the two versions and see how they perform. The heavier one with the light weight wing may be a good combo

Grrrrrr. Three weeks after I buy the stl files, you give them away free! I also bought Gravity Sketch for the Oculus Quest two weeks before that app was also made free. Fortunately I'm lucky in love.

As usual this is a very cool video. One thing though : I would avoid mostly white planes when the background is white (snow and light clouds).
