1991 Acura NSX: The Multi-Tool Supercar

- In this week’s film, we sit shotgun with Sean Lee for a drive around Los Angeles and its famed canyon roads in his first-generation 1991 Acura NSX. Tastefully modified with period-correct parts, this lithe streak of silver is an evolution of the stock car that was already a fantastic blend of sport and practicality, and though it isn’t factory-original, it has respectfully followed the trajectory, embodying the idea of “OEM plus.” It is, in a sense, more of an NSX than it was before; Sean has built upon the car, honing and enhancing this Honda (sorry, “Acura”) without coming at the cost of the car’s original identity.

I have 300k miles on my '91...I still drive it like I stole it, and it rewards me every time...LOVE MY CAR!
"drive it like i stole it" BMW vid reference?
Woag
@iTheGeek prob not a official BMW video that would be retarded lol
iTheGeek calm down. You need a nap.
Awesome, I’m jealous.
The level of production and the overall visual quality of this episode is off the charts. So good..
IZzelYy some very nice camera work
Award worthy.
IZzelYy amazing when they first reveal the cockpit and engine and when he exits the tunnel.
| One of their best IMO
The original NSX with the pop up headlights is still my favorite. The new NSX is a great car but perhaps a bit to complex and expensive it’s not selling that well. The original car was spot on.
Marc Scordato that's the nsx all about ...new experiences.
I think it failed because the final product is more of a high priced design study that left the concept of high performance (compared to the offerings of today) as a coincidental add on, thus making a car that is both another bland instance of technical ultra-modernism and unfulfilling in what its supposed to be in the first place (a sports car).
EmperorXaozx I agree entirely
ORIGIONAL IS STILL MY FAVE TOO
Don't forget, the original didn't sell very well either.
Pretty funny. And you only hear the NSX engine, UA-cam's subtitles quotes as "Music". Damn right !
A single car built by a japanese economy car company sent the likes of Ferrari to change their ways. Without this car, the Mclaren F1 wouldnt be so damn perfect. Imagine if Honda were to design a NA V12 for their production supercars. They make 4 cylinders sound good. Honda will never try to be like ferrari or Lamborghini. Always the underdog. its better that way though, when you beat the best with less.
Honda: The Power Of Dreams
lol ok there...
Stefan Ortega Hopefully. You can see the result in F1 (I don't speak about the Senna era. It's true love)
This nigga
I agree with your sentiment up to 'underdog' - it was a damn long time ago when Honda was an underdog by any measure, that would have been 50's or 60's, when they built this they were racing F1 and very likely had a bigger R&D department than Ferrari and Lamborghini combined, and with a budget to match it.
But cars like this and the new GTR bring something to the world from a different perspective, and I think both have become and will continue to be inspiring to where cars go to in the future, there were several other cars like that from Japan further in the past.
I'm a huge Honda fan but it breaks my heart to watch them perform so poorly in Formula 1. Power of crushed dreams. :(
Sean seems like a real fan, Its a treat to watch him go on about the car with such affection :)
Great owner, great car and great mods! I started reading here and started seeing "keep it stock". Listen, these mods are reversible but everything is well done and tasteful! Virgin cars are out there but not everyone likes those dinky little wheels that came on it, or the choking exhaust system either. Tweaking a car accordingly is all apart of being a car guy, it has to reflect YOU and what YOU are about, period!
Amen
Klasse Act thank you
Nice said
If it's being purchased as an investment keep it stock. If you're not strictly in it for profit do what makes you happy.
I agree, but I found funny the "purist" logo on a modified car.
For those of you upset about his English, please let us know how you get on next time you do a video voiceover in your non-native language. Perhaps you’ll then be more inclined to give the guy a break. And PS great to see him hanging it out on dirt. For driving not polishing, right?.
Akatarawa Japan They just don’t get the point that this is about a man and his passion with cars, probably jealous too! lol I had no trouble understanding. Maybe because I have a little Taiwanese English myself.
As an American I understood him perfectly. His opening analogy of comparing the impact a car can create vs looking at a piece of art was in my opinion better said than the majority of native English speakers here.
Accent is strong , but to answer ur question..he can talk slower
nsx also non-native&usa nation too.. good passion Mr. Sean Lee
Great video. I love my 1991 NSX there is no other car like it.
Amazing video. Thanks Sean Lee of Purist Group for representing the NSX community so well.
I'm lucky enough to be close friends with a man who has a '91, he throws me the keys without even thinking so I have a good amount of seat time in it. Everything that was said I agree with 100%, the feedback and tactile sensations you get, the ergonomics, the design and focus on driving, it's all amazing and nothing comes close to it in my experience.
I am salivating on this car. Saw this car for the first time on magazines then on Pulp Fiction. This is one of my goal to own one...
You've earned my subscription. Everything about this channel is why car culture is great. Each person has an amazing car, but also a legitimate connection to it. There is no douchery or bragging, just real people with great stories and bonds to machine. Beautiful.
Dream car, hard to believe it's over 25 years old. Exquisit, and so is this channel!
One of my favorite cars ever, this is a beautiful peace of art filmed and interviewed. I love this, thank you all!
guy two blocks from me just picked up a pristine 91 NSX i gotta shoot it one of these days, always loved these.
4:24 that skyline reflection on the bumper and the taillight! amazing shot
Best shot of the video of the car standing still.
I thought it was going to be a Nissan Skyline when i saw this comment! 😂
So sad very few people can afford this cars now in days.
This is one of the greatest videos on UA-cam, one of the top 5 videos on this channel. Absolutely amazing filming.
Always very excited when you do videos on Japanese cars! And the NSX is a dream of any Japanese car enthusiast!
I wonder if Stan Lee is Related to Bruce Lee??????????????
I bet he is!!!!
Has to be one of the best Petrolicious videos. And this gentleman just speaks his heart out.
Love how Petrolicious delivers videos, not just the car but connects it to the driver. The flip up headlight NSX was my favorite.
One of my favorite car videos on youtube!
Great tribute for a legendary car.
This guy has successfully built the most perfect NSX ever. I've always thought these cars just needed light, tasteful mods to really stand out. Wheels/tires, suspension, brakes, very light aero enhancements and an exhaust. If the hood was painted and the car was white, this would be my ideal NSX. Very, very good film.
1st gen. NSX (with pop-up headlights) is my favourite car. It's a timeless beauty.
Thank you, Petrolicious!! This is the NSX video we've been lamenting for....well, since you know when! 10 minutes, beautiful cinematography (4 minute mark!), great sounds, great owner! THANK YOU!
I truly respect a car that can find a balance between looks, performance and ergomatics...
I love how much knowledge and passion this guy has!!!!
Always have loved these ever since I was a kid when my father was working for Comptech. They are truly special cars. I wish I could afford one, but I'll just watch this video and dream for now.
I really fell in love with the shape of the car! Such a timeless design!
Great video. One of my favorite cars, always has been always will be. I would love to own one someday. Nothing is built like this anymore sadly, and as much as the new NSX is a track monster, you just will never get the driving purity that 90's sports cars offer. Long live the 90's, gone but never forgotten.
This is like the trifecta for Petrolicious. The car, the owner, the camerawork.
This still one of the best videos they've shot in terms of cinematography.
And Sean has such a great perspective on car owning and he's able to verbalize it so well.
There are a few truly great interviews on this channel, Sean is definitely one of them.
NSX, DB8 integra R & EF hatch. Three i would dream to own.
Spot on 👌
Curious, why would you prefer the 4 door integra over the 2 door?
Over 25 years later and it's still one of the best looking car around. That's design perfection defined! 👏👏👏
Absolutely perfect camera work. You guys knocked this out of the park. 👏👏👏
Those shots in the desert are an out of this world beauty
The production level and quality of your films is fantastic. This film was particularly good.
The speed in which you produce them is rapid, keep's us entertained, thank you.
lol no kidding he talk about ferraris lack of ergonomics when the nsx is a wannabe ferrari with half the cylinders 😂
Still looks great after 26 years. Will the current gen NSX age as gracefully?
not a chance in hell
Ronald Cheung The current "NSX" is an abomination.
Yeah it still looks futuristic, and it looks like it could still be a concept car imo
It already has not.
The current NSX has everything the previous one did not have, and it's exactly the reason why it will not age gracefully.
It was mechanical engineering and ergonomics at it finest. Something the Italians, Germans, or British did not achieve back then.
More and more people are asking Honda about the Gran tourismo concept, the so called baby NSX.
A modern nsx with out all the extra hippie BS.
Kudos to the guys behind the camera 👏🏼
looks great at every angle..what an evergreen design, not forgetting the unobstructed view from the seat and the V6 vtec!
As a Honda lover for the last 30 years, I love to see this. I don't know if I will ever get a change to own one but for now I'm quite happy with my CRX si
This guy loves his car! I like that he drives it and gets the full measure of fun out of it. Too many park their cars in a warehouse and just look at them. A car was meant to be driven!
When I moved here to Japan in 2002 I bought my father-in-laws green 1997 Honda NSX Type-S with only 12,000km for the equivalent of $15,000. I now have 196,000km on it and have had 0 mechanical issues. It is completely original other than I put black magnesium wheels on it in 2010. Truly a great car and I plan to give it to my kids one day.
That's a very high mileage for a type S ! It's very inspiring. Do you have a Instagram or some photos of it please?
What a awesome video!!! I still can't believe I saw my first NSX Monday in last week just surreal!!
My mom thought I was watching porn.
Jimbo she's right
you were.
Yup , you were.
Although I like em stock, I’m a believer of keeping classic cars stock this one is tastefully modded
She must know your habits of excessive ham slapping.
Holy cow, its like six months since I watched last petrolicious video, and I can see huge progress in quality of your vids. I mean it always has been good, but I really loved a camera and music (and the car ofc) in this one. Keep up a great work... yeah, and thanks!
Nice review. The NSX is Acura’s best car. It was definitely ahead of it’s time. The styling is timeless. It is almost 30 years old but it still looks modern in my opinion. You have to give Honda credit because they developed an exotic sports car that was reliable and comfortable to drive every day. This forced their more expensive competition to step their game up. That says a lot.
The 90's were a golden era for Japanese sports cars and sport compacts. There were so many great choices: 300ZX, 240SX, NSX, 3000GT, Eclipse, Supra, Integra Type R, Civic SI, MR2, etc.
Always great to see and hear someone remember about Senna and the participation on the development of the NSX! Once and again, greetings from Brazil!
Wow...was that El Mirage where Knight Rider intro was shot!? I've had the opportunity to put some miles on a 1992 NSX thankfully. This was a great representation of that car. The feel this car has, the rotational confidence it has...this car isn't about horsepower, it truly is about purity. There isn't a more analog car out there, that truly rewards you and makes you push harder to find all it has to offer. Like he said..buy one, because the only direction they're heading is UP. Interesting factor is, good luck finding a low mile one. These NSX's were like Civic's...gas and oil, total reliability. That's where it TRULY beat Ferrari of the era. I drove an F355 Ferrari a lot...pure junk vs a 92 NSX in terms of driving experience.
this is one of the best petrolicious vids yet
God, this is beautifully shot and edited. Congrats, well done!
I've been waiting this moment for a long time, thank you Petrolicious.
Sean-san, Thank you so much. Spending large money is daunting, but this video has given me courage to use my money to preserve a historical Japanese car also. Arigato gozaimasu, from Japan.
One of the most beautiful material I've ever seen about the NSX. Wonderful stuff.
Very well recorded, well spoken, and a beautiful car. On a broader note, it's really nice to see a mature Honda/Acura enthusiast doing the brand proud.
Beautiful video.
Fantastic camera work
I appreciate that this gentleman took the time to way period correct jeans, as well.
The cinematography and the production are INSANE!
Probably the best looking Japanese car ever made IMO. I have a friend who owns one of these and a Type R and for sheer drivability I prefer the Type R. NSX handles beautifully but I think lacks "cojones" of the Type R. Nevertheless, Petrolicious doing fantastic work again.
My friend just sold his NSX and he also had a Type R as well. Since his NSX had the removable roof, he also said the same thing; apparently the non-slicktop NSXs aren't that rigid. Still a pretty awesome car though!
FD RX-7 has to take the trophy for best-looking Japanese car.
depending how far you want to go back, Toyota 2000gt and many models of Datsun are way better looking
I presume you mean the Integra Type R Eric? And I would agree having driven both(and owning an R). The NSX is a _fabulous_ car, full of real innovation for the time, but I found the non R version more a high speed GT type affair. It's more tricky at the limit too(though that's more likely my lack of skill) and you can approach the limit more comfortably in the R. The NSX-R is a different beast to the standard NSX, more track focussed and raw. The latter is the one I'd want.
MrGrentch yes I mean the Integra Type R. I've driven 2 different NSX's and 2 different Integra Type R's and found the Type R much more exhilarating. And I should modify my original posting. The NSX is one of the best looking "modern" Japanese car, but my favorite Japanese car ever is the 240z. But I prefer European cars to Japanese, which is probably why this was one of my least favorite Petrolicious postings. Still I found the car more tolerable than it's owner.
2:58 I saw a video 2 weeks ago where guys with roadbikes were racing down this serpentine road at a incredible speed and now I see this NSX ... this road must be very popular.
I love the sheer emotion these videos contain
The NSX looks still hold up today with no problem, and the interior looks so awesome and cozy. Huge cool points for driving it on dirt, shows you're a true car enthusiasts.
My. Dream. Car. Graduated HS in 94, have loved these cars forever.
That was the start of a new generation the NSX concept and a good idea using pinifarina design, Honda is doing great cars today and I liked a lot the S2000 model
Petrolicious, thank you for making another video about the NSX. The first one from some time back had little in the way of drive time with the NSX and veered off into showing a different car entirely. This video was much better. The opening shot for some crazy reason made me think Millennium Falcon in the hangar on Hoth :o
Petrolicious videos make me so happy
Alot of enthusiast bought theirs when this became ridiculously cheap I want to say closer to 20k. I would of bought mine if I could but I was late to the party money wise. I am still glad other enthusiast got theirs because now I see them at car shows and on the streets which wasn’t the case a few years back. The gym I go to even has an NSX owner and mind you the membership is only $10.00 a month. It goes to show you that those that truly enjoy their cars are the enthusiast that dream of owning their favorite car and actually drive them.
A car from dream land but super easy to live with, purely classic
This channel is like gold with diamonds Palladium rubies and stuff.. every episode is a piece of art
The car to car shots and drone work, were truely not notch here! Awesome video!
The NSX to me is the real JDM unicorn. I've seen a handful of Skylines, Evos, Supras (owning a Mk3 7M-GTE myself) and I think one or two RX-7s over the years here in Germany. Also an F40, Porsche 959, Viper... But I can't remember actually having seen even one NSX in that time. It's probably the Zenith of mixing reliability with advanced tech, sports heritage and knowledge and everyday usability. The JDM idea of a 911 in my opinion.
That analogy at the beginning was amazing! Spot on bro.
Love the cinematography! Stunning images.
Original Acura Nsx is def one of my dream cars. So beautiful.
Such an under rated sports car, thanks Sean
only one word for your all videos...EMOTIONAL, Damn EMOTIONAL.
Mr Lee makes a wrong statement, The NSX was not designed by Pininfarina. It was designed in-house at Honda. They went to them for their first concept but ended up using their own design. Also Senna did not have a lage amount of input on the car. The books say he was at the track one day and took it for a run. When he came back he was not completely pleased. They ended up stiffening by 50%. However as always, another great video that I look forward to seeing every week! Keep it up guys!!
Woooooow. Wasn't a NSX fan. But this video and the car owner just changed my mind. Thanks
Even now this is still 95% better looking that the crap we have. This is such a beautiful car. I remember seeing one in person for the first time when I was younger then being able to sit in one a couple years later was such a happy time. Always
Two feelings. 1. Happy to see Petrolicious finding an NSX to feature. 2. I am frustrated of not be able to see a clean And a more iconic NSX to be filmed. You can find a plain ‘91 NSX but without all non sense modification. The loosen wire in the cockpit was something that hurt my eyes.
His Passion for This car is Inspiring.what a beauriful car.well kept Dam
I'm glad Sean likes his car, one of 18,000 produced, but his opening comments make it clear that he's never been in the presence of great art. The sound of a car is not art. The driving experience is not art. The visual design of a car involves art but great art touches your soul and changes your life and your perception of the world and the place you hold in it. So don't assume that, just because you're jonesed about your car, it's somehow more meaningful than experiencing great art. It's just a thing you happen to like.
Wow, amazing video! Best cinematography on Petrolicious for a while and that is really saying something!
Great episode as always! Thank you for featuring another NSX
Here's what you need to know:
1. Developed by the legendary Ayrton Senna.
2. Respected by the legendary designer Gordon Murray, who owned one.
3. First accessible performance supercar, regular drivers (99,99% of all buyers) actually could drive fast. Took 5-6 years before other manufacturers realized Honda was onto something and consequently made their supercars more drivable for non-professional racers.
4. The Wolf (Harvey Keitel) in Pulp Fiction drove one. Even Quentin Tarantino knew its worth in the 90's.
"It’s about thirty minutes away. I’ll be there in ten."
1. It was Not developed by aryton senna
He just provided some feedback on what he felt needed to change after test driving it.
2. It was not accessible it was actually over priced according to many which is why it didn't sell in the beginning roughly 120,000k u.s dollars in today's markets accounting for inflation.
Damn! Cinematography is off the frigging charts!
So glad you guys made a video about the NSX, I've been hoping for one for a long time.
Great sunset shot there at the end....really nice editing guys
Beautiful car. I miss my 1999 Acura TL just a bit. Great engines Honda made back then.
This is so much more desireable than any modern turbo charged supercar!!
F8 Tributo or this NSX?
I know which one I'll have.
Those shots on the sand plains.. Damn
One of the few Japanese cars that I make an exception with. This car, this particular year and model is gorgeous!
Steffy Hobmann: Wtf? U mean Supra's, SKYLINE'S, and 3000GT VR-4's are not worthy? HATER! JAPAN ruled the Sport auto world in da 90's PERIOD!
265308 .......why leave out the RX7? Better than any on your list.
You don’t like the 3rd Gen RX-7? Which is considered by many (and for very good reason) to be the most beautiful car to come out of Japan. I mean yeah, I like the NSX too, but it definitely wasn’t the only good-looking car to come out of Japan. Eh, to each his own I guess
@@265308 Don't forget the 300ZX, still a marvel at how ahead of its time it was.
The transition from the wet roads to the desert shots..were pure car porn..Thank you!!!..I need a cigarette and a drink now..and thank you to the owner Mr.LEE for sharing his passion with the world.
I'm a new driver and i love to go fast because it makes me feel free, for start i going to buy DC2 Type R because its Raw, just after that i gonna work hard to get that Nsx while i can, because prices gonna shot throw the roof !
Great production!! Nice job, "ALL" involved!!!
Excellent video. Hopefully some day all of us who desire to own one can afford to do so.
Dream car, hard to believe it's over 25 years old!
Every time I see a NSX video, it makes me want one.
Timeless car and superb video production.
What a well made video man wow
