Well compared to sims like rFactor 2 and iRacing, it is just a crashing sim. Tbh most motor racing fans care more about handling that crashing physics. Also the overall physics itself is not the best, the game still feels like your driving a very light car
It is a crashing sim cause driving sucks ass. Play some real sims or get a car and hit the track. You'll realise how far detatched from reality beamng really is.
If only more people understood just how good a sim this is. Yet the majority is heeding Jimmy Broadbent's opinion who never approached it as seriously as it requires. Crashes be damned, this thing has much more satisfying handling than the idiotic crashes. Might as well remove most of the jBeams and make it online-capable. By the way, Automation's cars have simplified jBeam structure, and thanks to that are less taxing on the CPU.
Yeah, I'm kinda sad that Jimmy never really gave it a real chance, even complaining about the handling while driving in chase cam and similar. There's so much potential in Beam and it really looks like they're slowly getting to a point where they can start maximising that.
The problem is that the driving physics is just not very good. The damage model is excellent but in terms of driving it like a race car it does not handle very well
@@noiderate3132There isn't a unified driving model, since the engine renders the suspension and body of the vehicle in real time. Alot of the vehicles aren't designed to be pushed to the limits and a good chunk of the 'racing' versions of these cars are just poorly setup and designed. Its got potential for sim racing IMO but the devs are more focusing on simulating normal economy and passenger cars.
@@xavierrodriguez2463 with the proper data you could make an exact copy of an actual car, especially if given the CAD models and absolute suspension settings, i feel that would be the best possible test of the game
@Maximus Lockhart imo I think the developers weren't going for a realistic driving model but rather a more realistic damage model. And the overly soft suspension is just there to make the car look satisfying.
As multi thousand hour player, this this the nail exactly on the head. This game, albeit it years old now is still in very early development. I can't wait until it leaves early access. I was here way before it went to steam. Id buy this game many times more if I could

"The utility called Automation" You're aware it's its own game right? It's no more a utility to make Beam cars than Beam is a utility to drive Automation cars.
I have Automation. Generally I feel it has lots of potential but is hardly a game. The career modes have critical settings that don't work and nothing is ever balanced in a playable way.
@@The76Malibu not even the beamng exports work properly. I have created maybe 200 cars in automation and I currently still revert to the good old beamng cars.
@@alexsavastru8125 you do know that you have to customise the cars in automation first, right? Whatever statistic of the car you modify in automation will be exported with the car.
@@aadarshroy3216 I.. do know how the software works. That's not the main issue. Then again, many issues that were plaguing my experience a year ago have been solved and the cars are now getting properly exported.
Licensing was never a preventative factor for damage. That was just an excuse Gran Turismo made for years because their way of implementing it would have been overly time consuming.
2 things that would make beamng my favorite car game/physics sim 1: better force feedback (like assetto corsa) 2: online multiplayer servers then it would be up wit the big bois
Bought it several years ago, when I found one YT video by accident. My recent PC upgrade made it even better, with many cores carrying the physics calculation load. If you ask me, one of the greatest car simulators ever, even when it still not finished. And yes, I agree with the fact, that many see it too much as a one trick pony, that used only YT content creators for making yet another crash collection, when there is so much more under the hood. Cherry on top is the fact that I have great interest towards physics modelling, so... It is great to see how well it is done there.
I wish more of the racing and multiplayer content would take hold in the UA-cam algorithm with this game. I think official leaderboards would do a lot to help stimulate a following for racing content on the platform, as I notice my speedrun videos do better compared to more general racing videos. Fingers crossed for the next update
I love how someone finally talks about BeamNG while understanding it. Great detailed video, but would've been even better if you talked about the multiplayer mod. ;)
@@captainzoll3303 probably not sadly.. We already got some (more than ungrateful) responses from the devs. Sometimes they just ignore us. What amazes me is that they don't acknowledge us in any way..
Had this game for about 5ish years, crazy to see how far it has come since then. FFB however is not very good, atleast on lower end wheels. I have followed their official set up guide, used a response correction curve, tried various settings recommended by others and it just isn't on the level of other sims.
Maximus Lockhart TURN STRENGTH UP, also mess with smoothing to get it to where it feels right. Test it with RWD non ESC cars so results of tests aren’t skewed by the front losing traction
And here I thought I was crazy treating BeamNG as a sim racer. I gotta say, the one thing beamng really taught me an appreciation for is the fragility of tie rods, and the dynamics of automotive safety!
I’ve wanted this game for years... I’ve seen ways of getting it for “free” but simple want to wait until I can support the creators and pay for the game myself
The problem with racing sims such as rFactor2, Assetto Corsa, or AC: Competizione is that they contain real, licensed cars, and the manufacturers of those real cars explicitly forbid sim makers to show their cars being damaged or destroyed; that's why the visual damage model is symbolic in these sims - not because of the deficiencies of the game engine, but because of the manufacturers' policy. If BeamNG were to obtain licences to present real cars, they'd most likely be forced to do likewise.
You could probably manage to lisence ladas, and, either way, a good few lisenced cars have been modded into the game, the beamng modding community is probably one of the best out there
I heard that this is BS and only Ruf in AC had reservations regarding damage. Developing a proper damage model is just a lot of work and doesn't pay off that well. People rather prefer a forgiving damage model either and the new iRacing damage model seems to go that route as well.
I got this game in 2013, they had a quite crude website. You had to sign up, send a donation, leave your e-mail and wait. One of the guys would personally send you a key, it wasn't automated. The controls were a pain, but still got hundreds of hours of joy driving and crashing cars. Recommended 100%
BTW BeamNG also has one of the best system simulation for cars, like shift logic for different automatic gearbox, detailed stabilize assist software etc, etc.... It's kind of odd that for high end flight simulator, a clickable cockpit with detailed system function simulation is a must-have, but not as much as for driving sim.
there are many tracks and racing parts included in beamng, including mods for the game. it makes no sense for them to make a separate game when it's included.
I’d just like to say that calling Automation a “utility” for Beam is an underestimation. It’s a completely separate game with it’s own campaign mode and everything, and has been in development for almost as long as Beam has been. The car creator in Automation is among the most involved there is, going into fairly comprehensive detail be it in engineering or design. Not only that, the campaign mode goes deep into the business aspect of car production and is currently in rapid development. I absolutely love it, I’ve done almost 1000 hours in it alone. I highly recommend it if you love the work done behind cars 😄
Just so people know, that’s not the limit. I work in a modding team. Things like a new Bolide and even go carts are considered. Why not join yourself? We show you everything you need to know :)
other racing games: you crash at 200 km/h, but the car its fine only a scratch on the light beamng drive: you crash at 50 km/h, radiator damaged, stering sigly damaged, engine overheating 5 minutes later...
GTA5 was a great game, however, the online community is so Toxic that I have to consider that game such a toxic piece of shit it will not get a mention in the top ten of anything good.
@Retrodude 21 Watch Dogs is a B tier quality game so the fact you mentioned it shows that you have a different standard for games in general. Second, whether a game can be a simulator or a "crime" game is not mutually exclusive. Rockstar has clearly made efforts to balance realism in their games in a plethora of ways so your point that it is a "crime" game doesn't mean anything.
i will never forget the years waiting for this game to release back in the rigs of rods days (like 2011-2013 or something). and the fact that the devs are still working hard on it today is amazing.
Absolutely love BeamNG! Its come a long way since its beginning years ago! I can spend hours just roaming around the maps; there's just something about driving in that sim that is so satisfying.
Thank you for the GT3 saturation comment in the beginning. We need to get away from that. There’s no rule that’s says sim racing has to be focused 99% on one class of car or what’s newest. Traditionally it was never hyper focused like that. There’s E Sports controlling sim racing content. Give me a Group C game and I’ll shut up.
I'm with you., being 40 I always go for the older cars in Sims. Group c group 5 ,b . the 91 asr f1 cars are great in vr in rf2 and AC. If your interested im in a league called esr.. Refreshing to see a different tactic than the traditional physics fallback of everything being a massless frictionless orb. I haven't seen deformable physics since Carmageddon.
I started playing BeamNG in 2017 and it’s honestly an amazing game. A lot of racing game devs can learn a lot off BeamNG. I still play it to this day here and there because it’s just so fun to create havoc with the realistic physics. One of my favourite games hands down.
I love this idea. but my childhood dream (when i first played gran turismo) was to have cars that had every component that could eventually fail why wouldn't you buy a second hand car if it didnt matter how many miles are on the clock why are some cars more reliable than others... little things like batteries failing, valves and other parts going wrong- limp mode (every german car ever) - you could implement a model where some cars (japanese) were just more reliable but others (sports) had better handling and fun I would love a game that has a sim option- you start off with 10k - buy your car, race on the streets- and have to maintain the car- slowly make it stronger but be aware that every addition could break something internal break- a single crash mode could effectively make every race a thrill and force more cautious behaviour as a single crash could destroy your entire build. also a kudos system like metropolis street racer
Thank you. Same here, Rigs of Rods since 2007. Shame that no one knows about RoR as it kinda had the same physics but on an outdated engine. It had multiplayer too.
I have "lost" DAYS of my life juts playing around with the modification tree, making various versions of all my favourite vehicles. Beam.NG is certainly one of my favourite games, and im glad to see others giving it the same love I feel for it
this is the most realistic game in the world. As soon as stable online lobbys a created, and proably will be soon since its in development, this game will become the only game any sim racer needs, due to the fact that not only could you drive GT3 cars like they're actually irl, but you can make your own gt3 car.
I have to agree, having this game together with Automation is an ultimate win. Because besides driving the default cars, you can make your own ones and put them on a real test. And honestly, I don't regret a single cent I've paid for both of these game, they truly are a powerful combo.
also the cars are very well designed. in something like gta they just took normal existing cars and made them ugly. these cars also use some stuff from the real world, but they honestly look like they could have come from some manufacturer without looking like exact copies.
I don't think he was pretending to have found a hidden gem that nobody has ever heard of. He's rather presenting a game that most solely see as a crash simulator into a new light as some kind of race sim with amazing soft body physics.
Just dont go overboard with mods and ure game will run fine. The new Traffic Simulator edition that adds a variety of respawning cars in ure view and driving around on the AI path given by the map is also a really cool thing. Get chased by police like in NFS games and dodge police blockades formed with the cars in pursuit. A few maps are so large and still expanding that ull never find back from where u started (from the mod directory). The team is also apparently reworking all the original and still existing maps. Campaign is yet not a thing but announced with Coming Soon for quite some time. So being patient and enjoyed this game and being hyped for all the content coming constantly is just amazing 🙂
Great review, i loved the emphasis on loving the very physics nature of driving experience one may get, over the year and some tight enthusiasm for driving myself, I may assure you that gta 5 modding scene may be the ultimate tool to create as you mentioned earlier, ones own driving sim experience based on how much knowledge one has. I see so many people call BeamNG a "crashing sim" & it just annoys the hell out of me
Agreed!!!
yo I finally found some forum ppl like me in this comment section, and yeah, I'm glad that this video is made by a person that understands the game, that made the video so much better
I'm that type of a person that all the time does crashes but only sometimes do races and I have over 200 hours so for me it is crashing simulator

You're aware it's its own game right? It's no more a utility to make Beam cars than Beam is a utility to drive Automation cars.

I’ve owned this game for years and it’s just amazing. There was a period of time that I didn’t have internet, so this was my main pastime.
Bought it several years ago, when I found one YT video by accident.
My recent PC upgrade made it even better, with many cores carrying the physics calculation load.
If you ask me, one of the greatest car simulators ever, even when it still not finished.
And yes, I agree with the fact, that many see it too much as a one trick pony, that used only YT content creators for making yet another crash collection, when
there is so much more under the hood.

FFB however is not very good, atleast on lower end wheels. I have followed their official set up guide, used a response correction curve, tried various settings recommended by others and it just isn't on the level of other sims.
It's better than iRacing's FFB system, for sure. And I'm on a 5 year old G27.

@@fitipapani9805 have you herd of any AAA game
The problem with racing sims such as rFactor2, Assetto Corsa, or AC: Competizione is that they contain real, licensed cars, and the manufacturers of those real cars explicitly forbid sim makers to show their cars being damaged or destroyed; that's why the visual damage model is symbolic in these sims - not because of the deficiencies of the game engine, but because of the manufacturers' policy. If BeamNG were to obtain licences to present real cars, they'd most likely be forced to do likewise.
Yeah
You could probably manage to lisence ladas, and, either way, a good few lisenced cars have been modded into the game, the beamng modding community is probably one of the best out there
I heard that this is BS and only Ruf in AC had reservations regarding damage. Developing a proper damage model is just a lot of work and doesn't pay off that well. People rather prefer a forgiving damage model either and the new iRacing damage model seems to go that route as well.
@@Leynad778 No, damage restrictions do exist unfortunately. Porsche have bad damage model on iRacing for example

Maximus Lockhart there is split screen multiseat in settings and there is a multiplayer 3rd party mod called BeamMP
Maximus Lockhart also beam VR would probably give people PTSD if they crash or whiplash
Imagine if the BeamNG creators actually created a sim based off of BEAMNG, like a non-free roam, more specialized racing kind of sim.
Rage quit machine lmao
many would quit the race after turn one
I think they are going to include racing in the beamng, just like happened with drag strip.
there are many tracks and racing parts included in beamng, including mods for the game. it makes no sense for them to make a separate game when it's included.
@@zabu14 no, i would just cruising around the track and enjoy the realism

Dwarf Fortress is in alpha-version for 11-12 years
@Retrodude 21 Watch Dogs is a B tier quality game so the fact you mentioned it shows that you have a different standard for games in general. Second, whether a game can be a simulator or a "crime" game is not mutually exclusive. Rockstar has clearly made efforts to balance realism in their games in a plethora of ways so your point that it is a "crime" game doesn't mean anything.
And you can even use automation to build any car imaginable from the ground up and then drive it in BeamNG drive. Blows my mind every time.

I love this idea. but my childhood dream (when i first played gran turismo) was to have cars that had every component that could eventually fail
why wouldn't you buy a second hand car if it didnt matter how many miles are on the clock
why are some cars more reliable than others... little things like batteries failing, valves and other parts going wrong- limp mode (every german car ever) - you could implement a model where some cars (japanese) were just more reliable but others (sports) had better handling and fun
I would love a game that has a sim option- you start off with 10k - buy your car, race on the streets- and have to maintain the car- slowly make it stronger but be aware that every addition could break something internal break- a single crash mode could effectively make every race a thrill and force more cautious behaviour as a single crash could destroy your entire build.
also a kudos system like metropolis street racer
