I will never forget the Bravery Awards ceremony in Stellarton, Nova Scotia to honour the men who had perished in the tragic Westray mining disaster in 1992 as well as those who had risked their lives to help them. I worked with the Governor General's Office and we travelled from Ottawa to Stellarton to set up the ceremony which was held at the Sharon St. John United Church. Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn presented Medals of Bravery to 180 men (26 posthumously). The ceremony was covered live by the CBC and The Men of the Deeps sang 'Rise Again". There could not have been a more moving tribute to the mining community. I will never forget it.
What a beautiful performance of We Rise Again. Our choir visited the Glace Bay Coal Mine Museum last week and found out about this choir. So glad to have discovered the choir and to visit the mine. What an eye opener that was!
I’ve had the opportunity to perform with both Rita MacNeil and these gentlemen. I was 11 years old the first time I met them, and they were some of the most gracious, kind hearted and wonderful people I’ve ever met. G-d Bless them all.

I've seen them in concert. And have done the tour of the mine. They are great.
