Good on ya for showing a real world way of getting out there. Foreign channels seem to be inundated with sponsorship and have gear beyond the affordability of the average joe. BTW I think equip outdoors is one of the best stores in nz. The next would be for the hard-core types is bivouac. I have yet to try inents outdoors, but I peruse their site regularly
Thanks Darryl. Sadly hunting & hiking is almost becoming a fashion show, I do like lite gear as I get older but I’m not ashamed if my gear is 20 years old with patches on or it came from an op shop 👍
For me in ireland my pack is determined first by weather. How wet windy and cold is it likely to be. Then number of days.determined my clothes and food.
I did two to midnight editing m & t and just finished compiling it early this morning, so will be uploaded this week. Typical Dave humour and big days to be had, hang in there Greg
Great vid Dave, nothing wrong with second hand gear, especially if you get a good price on it and yes Kmart does have a few cool camping items. Keep the videos coming, love all the tips. SUBSCRIBED
Hi Dave, love your video's of the back country huts etc. We have done a lot of hikes/tramps in nz over the last 10 yrs but mostly more well known ones. We heading over mid march to do the Whitcome pass. Anyway I think I have had this coffee before but what brand is it? Also we have decided to go for the dehy Radix this time what is your opinion of them, I think the last time I had dehy(Backcountry) was the first nz hike on the Milford and I said never again.
Thankyou, I’m struggling so need every bit of encouragement. It’s Jed’s coffee - good Radix seems more flavourful than backcountry, it did find I’d not taken in enough calories for the terrain though.
You won’t believe what the plb supplier did see ua-cam.com/video/DUA-c5QinaQ/v-deo.html I don’t recommend this unit as you can buy smaller ones but I will now get 16+ years out of the battery.
Great info. Ive always taken to much with me. Kinda have an anxiety that I need what ever it is but never use it 😅. Surely that text wasnt meant for you!!?🤔
Thanks Jason, it can be a fine line between packing for the worst and hoping for the best. I don’t make many mistakes these days so I do hope this video will help others achieve the same.
It depends, you need to ask yourself for how many people, how light & compact, how much you’re prepared to spend and if you’re using fire or gas or alcohol stoves.
That’s only two questions so not too bad 🤔 1. I need to give Macpac the first right of reply before I reveal a failure. 2. Hopefully I’ll reveal my mistake in 2-3 videos time. Meanwhile, I would like the hiking community to understand that I am very survival capable and unless I have activated my PLB, Outdoorsman Dave Will eventually crawl out of a dark hole in a few days time 😅
any man who hikes in short shorts is more of a man than me 😅....very informative video and done in a reasonable time, much appreciated. Im more of a knife guy so Id definately pack in a capable fixed blade irrespective but I see your reasoning from an ultra light perspective and I always end up packing too heavy anyway as theres a few other luxury food items I wouldnt leave behind.....very informative and leaves me room to question some of the items I take in future 😅
It’s a balancing act, I love my Buck knife but it’s heavy and not used unless I’m doing bushcraft wildcamps. Glad you found it informative and causes you to reevaluate 👍
good video Dave. I think you mean lip balm, not lip gloss. Or maybe you did actually steal your wife lip gloss for a bit of a fashionable shine on your pout.
Once said it was too hard to correct but yes. It’s so hard thinking on the fly, you will note there are not many edits between clips, all off the cuff. How about crocs ah, all I could think of was shoes 😂 helpful though?
@@OutdoorsmanDave I think actually you just couldn't bring yourself to say the word 'croc'. Ugly as they are I have a pair for hut shoes too. Anyway these imperfections make the vids more interesting and natural. Much prefer that.
That doesn’t look like much food. Do you lose weight on your trips ? After my nelson lakes trip I have realised I need way more to keep my energy level up. I was having 3500 to 4000 calories a day. Next time I’ll aim for 5000. Bump it up with coconut fat
Yes I do, (1kg on this trip) it’s part of a forced discipline and a goal I set in Oct to loose 7kg, (currently lost 5). If I need more food I forage or eat stuff left in huts. Remember, the pioneers didn’t have any of that fancy stuff you had and still survived 😉 there’s 1.4kg here, what was your allocation food weight? I hope to look more like the Greek god Abel soon 😁
@@OutdoorsmanDave not sure what my food weight is exactly. If going for a few nights not to concerned on what I bring just make sure I have about 1 gram protein to each kg of my body weight. The radix recovery smoothies are their best product I reckon. For longer trip next time I am going to try and optimise more. Being hungry sucks. Adding heaps of coconut oil to a dehydrated meal is effective.
The weak body will endure whatever a strong mind will push it through. Let it be recorded here that I recognised greatness in you early on in this UA-cam journey Abel, you are doing splendidly 👏👏👏

Same same, weather in NZ is very unpredictable and wet.
C’mon Dave I’m waiting for your Kaweka vid!

@@greghughson7450 Awesome so it works. What were you upto, catch anything, I think the Hick family were in Tussock around then?

Thanks Mark, and for watching. Yeah man, I’m not the kind of guy that needs to keep up with the Jones’s and I get a kick out of repurposing stuff.

Great vid once again, Big D. Question for you, what sort of PLB do you have? I’ve hired so many times I’m finally going to buy one.

Good to see your first vid of the year, Dave. You do love to give gear a second life, don’t you. Nice one.
Yes, I think repurposing and repairing gear is not only fiscally prudent but better for the planet. It’s nice to be back,
Dave, I am just starting to buy my fresh packing , where should i look for cooking gear in NZ?

Really interesting video!
Thank you 👋
No way am I that organised. As you know, I will always forget something. Its almost a tradition with me, now!
Thanks for watching Pete, I wrote this helpful video for forgetful OLD people like you 🙃 Be the change you want to be in 2023, drone boy 💯
