That is such a gorgeous sweater! What a find! For any curious non-knitters, it was knit ‘in the round’ on circular needles - hence no side seams. The needles are attached to each end of a long cord to make about a 30”-36” unit. She cast on all stitches, then joined to knit in a large tube. When finished, she (or he) cast off and literally cut the openings for the sleeves and front placket. The cuts are called “steeks”. Then the collar, sleeves and button band are added by picking up stitches & knitting each piece. Sleeves are knit separately & seamed on. It’s kind of sad that your knitter got so close to finishing. But I’m glad you will wear & appreciate it!
I’ve seen twill tape used to stabilize the front of a sweater before adding the zipper. The tape is cut in two identical lengths and that way the sweater front can’t stretch unevenly. Then the zipper is hand basted. Sweaters with horizontal patterns can so easily distort. I loved this video. So inspiring.
Very helpful ideas for adding closures to those buttonless sweaters! Much more cozy. An idea for the last sweater, if people don't have some scrap chiffon, is to thrift a coordinating scarf to use for the closure, or as lining, as you have done. Your videos are very encouraging. You are probably a really good teacher to your students, as you are to us.
My kingdom for a Value Village. Seriously. I went a couple of times while visiting my daughter in Anchorage and oh my. Best. Thrifting. Ever! You are so brave to cut into a sweater - although it's not the cutting for me as much as the cutting and sewing. Steam, steam, steam is the answer and thank you for both the inspiration and the tips! My fav is the purple but I love them all. I have 2 up north that I've struggled with closures - why did I never thing of frogs? Doing that as soon as I get back! I do miss cardigans (too hot for FL) and the days of the Laura Ashley sets . . . oh, the '90's . . . p.s. You hit it! Well done and deserved! 👏🎉
All great ideas! I just turned 2 long cardigans into dresses, one with a 2-way zip, and the other one I sewed together along front band and added non-functional buttons (to avoid gapping) 💜
I have never seen a sweater like that hand knit, heavy wool one with the beautiful patterns knit into it. It looks gray and cream on my screen. You did a great job sewing in that zipper. That would be as warm as most winter jackets.
Thank you Catherine. Last winter I updated a few cardigans but didn't think of adding closures. Wonderful idea. I am in Australia so we are in spring at present but this will be great for next year. I always enjoy your videos. I have even had the courage to do some alterations for people.
I loved your changes to the sweaters. I loved all of them but the purple one was genius. I could not imagine what you were doing until the end! It looks great on you.
Thanks! And thanks for the glasses opportunity, and that Cowichan sweater, as a knitter familiar with its history and various cultures and traditions, I’m in awe. ❤
Ohhh, I am so jealous of your Cowichan sweater! My grandmother used to knit them for family but I was never able to be a recipient before her passing. I don't knit and I am always on the lookout for one. I have been wanting to learn to knit so that I can knit myself one. Beautiful transformations.
The sweater with the caribou is like one I made years ago. Mine was made with buffalo yarn and had eagles on both sides in the front and a large one on the back. I had a devil of a time with the zipper. I ended up sewing it on by hand; my machine just couldn't or wouldn't do it.
I don’t wear jewelry but I do have various colors, shapes and sizes of glasses. You can be sure I will be using your code to add to my collection. This sweater update video has got to be in my top ten of your videos too. Love the variety of ideas and techniques. Lastly, gurl congrats on the 100,000 subscribers!!🎉
That was such fun to watch! I can see lots of sweater updates in my future and I LOVED the eyewear fashion show. I JUST spent a fortune on new glasses and plan to check out the savings and options for a few more fun looks!! 🎉😂❤ Thx Catherine. 100K. WoooooHoooooo!
What a beautiful video, Catherine! The joy you exuded, even when having to redo seams, was contagious! Your respect, paid to the indiginous artisans who created that gorgeous, cozy cardigan, was very much appreciated. How lovely to have a zipper in it now, so you can be wrapped cozy and warm inside it! Thank you for teaching us something valuable on every lovely cardigan. Ps love all your new glasses!
Love them all! I have 5 pairs of glasses and love interchanging them with different outfits. They are so expensive and thankfully I haven’t had a Rx change in 3 years and 2 years ago I discovered a place to buy 2 for the same cost as 1 cost through my eye doc. Fingers crossed my December check up is good and I can add more pairs! Another great video! (Glad for a long one to keep me distracted on this crazy USA Election Day!) Thanks!
I have a couple sweaters that I hardly ever wear because there isn't a closure. Thank you for giving me some different ways to correct this problem. Those clasps are a great temporary solution.
I really enjoy your channel. I have been sewing for all of my life (when I had the time). I love the way you teach and your great ideas. Thank you! Best wishes from Toronto. 🇨🇦😊🧵🪡
I really love what you did with the Cardigans, but I especially love that you shared the zipper (rip and all!) making it such a valuable teaching moment for ALL of us! You are honoring the Culture and Treasure of that Beautiful Creation! I have retired since we last chatted and the one class I miss the most is my advanced Sewing class! Thank You for all you are doing for us! Your kiddos are especially blessed to have you!
I love thriftiness as much as you and really enjoy your tutorials. I Smiled when you mentioned using a clapper. I found a great small vintage pig cutting board at a thrift store, I use as a clapper. It works so great😊🐖
Congratulations on 100k! I love starting my morning with a CatherineSews video - especially wardrobe tweaks like this one! Wonderful results on all of them!
Catherine, you are amazing!! I have some of those "open" sweaters too, and you've given me excellent instructions to bring them up to date! Thanks for sharing your genius with your fans. Sending love from Portland, Oregon!!
My mom was born in Victoria and my great grandmother was Haida and they eventually moved to BC and Seattle. Loved learning about this Cowichan sweater!
Yes, absolutely- I like a cardigans with a closure, I have hesitated to pickup one with out and have been thrilled to see short cardigan with closure coming back around It will be great to see how to convert from long and open to shorter with closure
Oh, and I'll have you know that TONIGHT I am using that tote bag that you gave me, back in 2011! I use it every time I need to do marks, and it reminds me of you! hahaha
This is AMAZING! I love your ideas. You give use courage to try our own makeovers. I'm learning so much from your videos. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge, skills, and creativity!
I loved this video. It was so cool watching you do all those tricks to update all those sweaters!!! Just awesome! I’ve learned so much from all your videos! Thank you very much from Vancouver 🧡
Thanks Catherine for thinking outside the box!!! You are so smart and creative. I live in South Texas but do wear sweaters. Now I shall get busy on my long sweaters with closures now. 😊
Oops! Your crochet sweater is actually knit lace. Love the way you fixed it. It would also look nice with your sew on hooks from Amazon. I intend to buy some for a similar sweater.
Oh my, seeing that Cowichan sweater inspired me to look for an old High Sierra sweater I got many years ago from the thrift store and fix it up. It's not as chunky but similar colors and I'm sure it's wool. I'll need to do lots of shaving and I'll have to get some yarn to fix a few holes but it's totally doable. I'll be so happy to wear it again! AND thanks for the info for the glasses, I am one of the many who asked for it! ❤
Catherine, those were amazing transformations on your sweaters! Loved every one! Quick question: when sewing sweater knits, do you use a lower tension on the presser foot? Congratulations on 100K subscribers too! Your channel is my favorite 😊. The Firmoo glasses look really cool! I used to accessorize with eyewear years ago, having half a dozen pairs in different colors. But they've become so expensive now - I welcome the chance to try a new resource for eyewear! Cheers! 🎉
It has never occurred to me to put my thumb between the layers when ladder stitching. I know it was for filming the stitch, but I think it may work for me on trickier fabrics. Thanks.
Amazing as usual! Love you!!! I'm going to have to visit you in Canada to go thrifting with you....where I am I have yet to find (for myself anyhow) gems like the ones you have found! I've found some for my mother, though, which has been great.
My mum spent months knitting my dad a sweater in chunky wool in a similar reindeer pattern. Then she put it in the washing machine, the colours ran & it shrunk. She was heart broken.😪 I'm going back to the 1970's when you couldn't really control the temperature of the washing machine. She was in too much of a hurry to hand-wash it.
Back in the day, we used disposable razors to remove fabric pill. Now we know better about plastic waste, using a metal safety razor eliminates plastic waste & sharpening the blade on a whetstone (like we should also be doing with our craft knives) makes blades last much longer. When we do recycling, all the sharp can lids are supposed to go inside one of the closed cans along with other same metals, so the blades being non-surgical can go safely inside with them. (Otherwise, dispose with local sharps guidelines, obviously - it just seems more sensible to me that they're safely recycled at 1500degC, instead of being left wrapped up in duct tape, in landfill forever.)
Very neat ideas to do with sweaters. I bought some extenders at Michael's a couple years ago, I think they were extenders for making jewelry maybe bracelets I have a lot of long sweaters that are just plain and needed something to put at the chest area, just below the bosom. Thank you for the coupon code I am going to see if I can find it online I think you said firmoo?
Fellow Canadian here who can totally appreciate the Cowichan Sweater find. Score of the century! I would have snapped that up in a heartbeat too. 😍😍😍

I took some of my old cardigans and stitched the front closed for tops to wear at home. I just stitched all along the edge of the placket. Works well
I’ve done that too! Also with button front dresses - the lower buttons, hip down.
You provide great content. You are alway s teaching this old dog new tricks.
I love love love your alterations, upcycling, refashioning,...
And I also love how much knowledge you share with us.
