Great video, I've change mine a couple of times already just the way you explained it here, very simple. I came here to refresh my memory, I learned from you btw. You make it real easy for people like me to understand. Thanks for the great info, I really appreciate it !!!
I remember my father taking our car to the local shop back in the 70's to get the fluids changed and I specifically remember the mechanic would drain, fill, run the engine for 5 minutes, drain and fill again. That was hardcore man!
As always, great video. I did the drain and fill on my 2013 Escape 2.0 at 45,000 miles. Wish I would of done it sooner. Will do it often, like every 20K more than likely. IMPORTANT NOTE. My 2013 Escape does NOT have a dip stick. On the drivers side of the transmission a few inches up is a fluid level plug. When your vehicle is level, warmed up to temperature, the fluid should be even with this hole for proper fluid level. Man, I would give up one of my pinkys for a hydraulic 4 point lift.
Nice one FTM! i used this proc-video earlier! originally, the problem is when this guy's wife's driving this Ford Escape every time from a full stop, then let go and press the gas pedal. She feels something slipping "like between 1st , 2nd and 3rd gear. I test driven it and confirm the problem. Check the level of the fluid before drain, and found out the dipstick is not touching fluid anymore. WOW!, ok tried it for 3 times and still no oil at the end of the dipstick. Then follow this procedure, and voila! slippage was not felt but advised him to monitor it still when the wife's driving it. TY!
Was going to pay $240.00 to $400.00 for trans flush but what for when I can replace oil myself. I couldn't find the mercon LV trans oil at Autozone, Oriellys, walmart etc so ordered it from EBAY today. I have 2010 Ford Escape 2.5 FWD auto 6 speed transmission. Will do update after I'm done. Sure glad I found your video. Save me a bundle of money. Thank you!

Good point about frequent service. When I do this service, I clean my new fluid tank and then add the fluid to it. I don't want to mix fluids. So important! Good video dude.
They really don't want us changing this trans fluid. I bought the Haynes manual just to get more clarification on quarts and refill and all that. They had NOTHING to say about the trans. They literally skipped over it, lol. I changed the trans fluid once following this vid 1.5 years ago. It's time to do it again.

Thank you for this! I was contemplating paying for a transmission flush for my 2012 Escape (4cyl 2wd). Every place I called said they had a universal fluid or wanted to charge me $200+ because they'd have to change my filter too. One said they'd,"...have to drop the pan and change that filter..."
Nice video. I think I may have gone a bit heavy on the drain plug torque for my wife's. I also wish she had the metal end on the dipstick vs the plastic one. Its hard to read sometimes. It seems to be distorted by the residual fluid in the dipstick tube.

Great Video. Just changed my transmission fluid with confidence. Drives better now and saved myself a few bucks. Thanks. Couldn't find the fluid except at dealership which wasn't overly expensive.($10CAD/litre)
I did the first fluid change on my 2010 Fusion with Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic ATF marked Dex/Mercon LV. The transmission shifts and transfers power better than it ever did with the factory Mercon LV. I will be from now on be doing a drain and fill with Valvoline Maxlife every 30,000 miles. I did a full flush the first time to replace all of the old Motorcraft LV with Maxlife.
Brandon, I just replaced my condenser on my 2009 Escape and am going to add a couple of quarts o fhe Valvoline Max Life Full Synthetic Mercon LV. I hope it woks well with mixing it in with what is in there already. The guy at Napa said it would be fine. Glad to hear that yours is running good with this product.
Thanks a ton, I've learned so much good advice from your videos for my '12 Escape. This is so easy, definitely smart to do, so long as you do it right. Next thing on my list, that's for sure.
Just did a drain and fill on my 2010 Escape with 105,000 miles. I don't think the previous owners ever changed the fluid, and what came out was pretty black but no chunks or sludge. I ended up doing the drain and fill 3 times with a drive between each one to bring it up to temp. and get it flow through the transmission. My local Ford dealer told me they do the drain and fill 3 times if the fluid is very dirty. Mine took 5-1/2 quarts to fill after draining.
Thank you brother for the video. That was easy. It took me about 15 min altogether. You could not have made it any clearer. 2011 escape 2.5 99347miles.
if you own this car get rid of it. The "sub frame" rotted out, and our tire axle collapsed WHILE DRIVING. It is an inherit flaw in the car design I learned later that FORD knows about, and did not notify the community (sound familiar?). We had to junk the car and got -0- for it. when I did this job I put in the amount I took out. Good luck.
Nice video! I do this every 2-3 5000 mile oil changes on our 2011 Escape. Very easy to do although I didn't realize getting the fluid level exactly correct was that important. I've found ours usually takes right at 5 qt. and it gets it pretty close. Whenever I find a vehicle with a drain plug and an easy to access dipstick on the transmission I'm surprised now-a-days! Ive noticed a couple of our higher end auto parts stores around here sell the Motorcraft LV fluid so its very easy to find.
Already a fan. I like your style and your explanations. Just bought a 2011 fusion sel and barely has 60k looking to do a fluid drain and fill mainly for my own records and start with a fresh schedule
As you said, the torque spec for the drain plug is 106 inch pounds, but it is a little less when you “lubricate” the threads with the thread sealant…On my 6F35 drain plug, I used the thread sealant, then I went from 75 to 90 inch pounds in 5 pound increments. I stopped at 90 inch pounds because taking a lubricated thread to the 106 inch pound spec would have been to much. This drain plug is a NPT fine thread slightly tapered plug. So just be aware of this so you don’t over tighten and crack the aluminum transmission case, or strip out the transmission case drain hole threads…
During the flush, all that dirt and crud from the lines gets dumped right into the valve body too.I know a transmission repair shop that sees this a lot doing valve body cleanings that is more than the flush
Based on dealership service department recommendations of changing the fluid every 120,000 miles, I have gone 73,000 miles without changing my fluid on my 2016 Fusion. I'm about to do 3 drain and fills in the next 2 weeks. I looked in the owners manual and it even says every 30,000 miles if there is excessive idling (I'm an Uber driver). Always read your owners manual. Also using mercon lv is very important. On a previous vehicle I used the wrong kind of transmission fluid and burned out the whole transmission in less than 2 miles.
What about an in-line filter in the cool send or return line? That way you trap more dirt and changing the filter in the future would be like a Saturn (good design).
The level stick you've used to check the level is the engine oil level stick, the transmission level stick has a dotted white plastic piece s at its lower end
well changed a, 2010 mariner, 2015 escape, 2016 explorer all mercon LV and just over 4 qts each. RockAuto was the cheapest even with shipping. Also bought motorcraft air filters.
My car (2013 Ford Fusion 2.0) doesn't have a dipstick. Just has the yellow cap on top. How would you know exactly how much to put in? Manual says 9 quarts which I'm sure is the entirety of the transmission including the converter. For just a drain and fill do we just estimate 6 quarts? Thanks brother. And also I'm assuming you add it in from the transmission cap where there is no dipstick. Some places say they shoot it in from the bottom. Thanks again.
I JUST FOUND YOUR SITE AND HAVE LEARNED ALOT ABOUT MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE MY TRANS SEEMS TO BE SHIFTING A LITTLE HARD LATLEY AND THE manual says 100000miles I will follow your advise and have it changed every 30k
I have a 2005 ford escape automatic transmission v6. In the manual it says use only Macon atf. I've been to many stores and I can't find Macon. They have Macon V, Macon LV but nothing just Macon. Any suggestions? Oh by the way the manual also says 9.6 quarts. Is that possible?
@@FordTechMakuloco yep, I did it yesterday. But still having problems with transmission shifting into overdrive. It's an automatic and goes through 1,2,3, fine but in between 3, and overdrive it hesitates big time. It's weird , like it kinda hesitates and shimmer. Someone said something about a high speed sensor might have gone bad. I looked at another UA-cam video about the sensor or selinoid and it looks like a bitch to get too.
Did this to a 2010 Escape using the Motorcraft Mercon LV fluid.Luckily did not have to get it from the dealer.Auto Value auto parts stores sell it as well under the Motorcraft brand name.
Great video, thanks. Your tutorial gave me the confidence boost to try it myself. I poured the old fluid back into the bottles, but I don't know what to do with it. Can it be recycled?
Great info here! I am glad i did find this info. I have an 2010 Ford Escape hybrid who is just not changing gears when is running for a while. When cold is just doing fine, after 10-20 miles run is not shifting gears easy,I have to take of my foot from the gas and spin again, and after that is changing gears. I was told that the filter may be clogged( car has over 100000 miles, never change trans fluid,...i got it as is-used car). You are stating that the filter is not changeable, what has to be done in my case? Thanks
That was a very good video. Thanks. I had no idea that the transmission fluid needed to be changed that frequently. I will get right on it. My question however is in regards to my rear end noise, I am thinking it in the differential. It may be leaking oil. It is wet on the bottom of case but it doesn't drip on the driveway. What can I do to fix it . FYI I did tow a bass boat last year. I won't tow with now because of the noise.
I have a 2011 Ford Fusion 2.5L 92,500 miles. Trans fluid never been changed. Is it safe to change it now? I am afraid it will start slipping after changing since it hasn't been changed for a long time.
Very informative.. Thanks!! I have a 2010 Milan Premier which also uses the 6F35 and its at 98,000 miles and I've had it since 87,000 and not sure when and if the fluid has ever been changed. I'm gonna do a drain and fill on my driveway.. Wasn't aware of the non-accessible filter. Yikes
Great videos, you are a real gift to Ford owners. I have a 2015 Fusion 2.5L with a 6 speed, is it like the Focus and should I drain the oil at 30,000 miles or so. The book says it good for the life of the transmission and you don't need to change it. Thats a pretty tall claim. I'm in my 70's and don't do the social stuff. I hope I can find the answer when you post it. Thanks, Mark
If you could please help me with re installing the drain bolt. When I took it out it wasn't seated all the way down to the transmission it had about 3 threads exposed. So when I re installed it it didn't seem to ever bottom out and when i got to about the same amount the bolt was before removing it I stopped. I used thread sealant but just not sure if I went too far or not enough. Why do they design the screw so that it doesn't seat all the way down flat like a typical drain bolt? I used a torque wrench that only has a minimum setting of 10 ft/pounds which is 120 inch pounds I know it's more than the recommended 106 inch pounds but I didn't torque it until it clicked because i was worried I was going too far. Please help put my mind at ease. Thanks for all the help!
I have a 2010 ford fusion for three years. It was a used card. Everything is good since then. But recently the transmission light showed up while i was driving in the city. At that moment, the shifting was weird but it was still functional to drive. I decided to stop and restarted it, and the light went off and everything was normal. Same problems happened twice again after the initial one. I did not want to create additional damage and i brought the vehicle to the shop. They told me there were not any codes stored in the computer and the trans worked very well. They also recommended to do a ATF flush. I did everything they told me. But, the same problem happened again after couple days. I am writing to you because you are professional on ford, and i am wondering why there is no codes and why the wrench light was on but disappeared after restart. Also, do you think that dealer's scan machine is better than regular auto shop's?
Your correct about converter plugs. I was a Lincoln Mercury dealer mechanic from 1972-1980. We did a lot of C6 ,C4 FMX, etc trans service .We always drained converters, they held a lot of oil. Do you think changing only 5 qts is enough? I haven/t looked up what 2012 Escape 6 speed holds total yet. Thanks FTM
Hello sir, thank you for the very informative video. I own a 2009 Ford Escape XLT. Is the process the same as shown here? Mercon LV, no filter? I'm planing on doing it myself, your response would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Great vid - thank you so much. But I'm only finding out about this now on my second hand 2011 Escape - 186000m! Is there anything special I should do now besides change the fluid immediately? 😔
@@edgarj11 I did it yes. It's seems ok. Maybe changing gears at a higher rpm than I would like. 2.5-3k. Pushing 200k on this 2011 Ford escape. Not a bad little car
You have helped me so much with my Ford Fusion in the past I have one question regarding my brake system. I recently had the electric traction control light and brake light and ABS light come on on my Dash and says check brake system on the display. What is the most common problem? 2010 Ford Fusion.
Really helpful. Any good substitutes for the plug? Apparently they were discontinued. Mine is leaking and didn't know if there's an easy place to find a replacement.
Brian, you didn't explain how to get the old fluid out of the torque converter. Could you expand your explanation on why or is it really needed? Thanks, love your videos.
I know this question does not pertain to this video, but could you do a video or pass along some info on changing the rear diff fluid on a 2014 Edge AWD or similar. Concerning the correct fill level. I never got out the amount the manual says the capacity is? Your videos are great and very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to post them
2011 Ford Escape Limited V6 4 wheel drive owner here. Every online site I check being, Amazon, AutoZone, O'Reilly's etc. shows that Genuine Ford Fluid XT-10-QLVC MERCON-LV Automatic Transmission Fluid is not for my vehicle. Why is that?
Great video. I just did my transmission in my 2011 Escape and 4.5 quarts came out so I put 4.5 back in. My dipstick is different from yours as it has a white plastic part at the bottom and it's a bit difficult to read. One side always it up to the top but the other side it only goes up to the halfway mark.
My theory ...we came to watch a video. Meaning we probably aren't experts and need some reminders on how to do this procedure. This dude has a channel dedicated to Ford maintenance and u don't lol. Long story short use Motorcrafts shit and fulfill your destiny
I am hoping you can answer this question. Does it have to be Motorcraft Mercon LV or can you use something like Pennzoil Platinum LV Multi-Vehicle ATF. I live in Canada and the Mercon LV at the dealer costs $15.00/ quart. There are cheaper options from different oil companies. Will they do the same or not?
@@justlg3359 This was on my 2009 Ford Escape Limited with the 3.0 vs. It took 3 liters. Mine used 6 liters which is 6.34 Quarts. But I started with 5 liters to start and then I kept checking and adding once it got hot.
Thanks for the great vid. Need your help please. I have a 2011 Ford Fusion with about 121k. Sad to say I never changed my transmission fluid. I know face palm. I got use to the low maintenance on my 97 Camry. Now my fusion shakes a but when going less than 30 mph and the engine like just came on. Sight unseen, your thoughts please.
Thanks for the video. Just a tip, is there a way to turn off the auto adjust light on your camera? It keeps alternating between light and dark. Maybe get some external lights under there?
No worries. Appreciate your work. They were going to charge me like $200 to do this. And they wonder why people don't take their car to the dealer for service.
I have a 2010 Escape with 170000 km (111000 miles) on the original fluid...no issues YET... I am going to change the fluid but was wondering if I could use my fluid extractor and pull fluid out the fill tube....... is there any concern or issues doing that? THANKS FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS
Thanks man! You saved my #$%!!!! BTW, what camera do you use to film your videos? Very clear and great audio. Thanks again for all your videos and time.
I'm scared now I have 85000 kilometers on my tranny fluid. I wish they would have made the filter easier to change. I was definitely intending on changing the fluid. That;s why I was looking for how to video's. Thank you for making this vid!!!!
Great vid man, really informative. I got a question. I was at a traffic light, when i accelerate (green light). i hear a sound like something crack and the car shakes. I stop, the sound was gone. As soon as i put in D the car shakes and died. I restart in neutral no problem. Put it in D shakes almost died put in neutral no shake. I was able to dive home 2 miles but switching to neutral at stop or when i have to break. The transmission change gear with ease in the meantime Torque converter ? what do you think. 2006 ford escape V6 3.0L 125000 miles.
you say to use this mercon LV in fusions. My owners manual for my 2009 2.3 L says to use FNr5 fluid. Nowhere anywhere does it say to use mercon LV in Ford Fusions.
I too, had a hard time finding Mercron LV in the Detroit area. Then, I found Wolf's Head has LV at my favorite auto parts store. Works great in our 2010 4-cyl Escape w/6 speed trans. Some videos show a small amount of fluid drains out. That's what mine did. Then, replace, drive a few blocks AND REPEAT THREE TIMES (total). How are you able to get so much out at once?

Sounds like must live in the rust belt. If not cleaned consistently any vehicle will rust out parts that shouldn't have. I've owned a 09 a 12 from new and just got a 10 never had any rust issues except one on the rear wheel wells.
@@dananddyan my mechanic said it is a manufacturer defect...ie cheap metal with no rust prevention coating. None of my other cars ever had this type of problem. I do not have a garage, but this should not have happened. Sell, sell, sell
I've been a mechanic for 20 years. And have worked at ford, GM, International among a few. It is not a common problem where I live. If I still lived back in Ontario it very well could be a problem with all the salt they use on roads if not washed properly. I'll keep my escapes and probably even buy another and wash them properly like any vehicle.

During the flush, all that dirt and crud from the lines gets dumped right into the valve body too.I know a transmission repair shop that sees this a lot doing valve body cleanings that is more than the flush
Serious question - should a do-it-yourselfer NOT be doing this procedure then?
You put out some great videos!! I'll be changing the transmission fluid in my 08 escape now after watching this. Using Mercon LV for sure!!!
+hazmat1000 You have a CD4E it takes Mercon V- amzn.to/1Nputnf
Yep, looked at the dipstick today and that is what it said....
Great video! You are so appreciated for doing these instructional and very informative videos. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the comprehensive and very easy explanation on to fix and maintain 2008-2012 ford escape 👍👍👍
My manual says 9 quarts ? For my 09 escape
+Daniel Peters Ford has deemed them worthless and does not recommend them anymore.
You have great videos. Please wear safety glasses while under a vehicle. Safety should always be first.. Have a blessed day.
Nice to know this about the type of fluid to use and why, got an escape coming in. Thanks, and love your video's !
Great video man! I just did this on my 2010 escape 2.5L XLT. Super easy
The level stick you've used to check the level is the engine oil level stick, the transmission level stick has a dotted white plastic piece
s at its lower end
What in the world lol
well changed a, 2010 mariner, 2015 escape, 2016 explorer all mercon LV and just over 4 qts each. RockAuto was the cheapest even with shipping. Also bought motorcraft air filters.
Good Info….I have done mine twice so far 49,000 miles / Mercon LV / 4 1/2 qts….Amsoil probably ok too
My car (2013 Ford Fusion 2.0) doesn't have a dipstick.
Yours uses Mercon V now, so pick up 6 qts of that to have on hand. If you are just doing a drain and fill it takes right around 5.5qts.
Really enjoy your clear, honest videos! Thank you. Question, my 2018 6f35 does not have a dipstick. How/where do I fill it?
Did this to a 2010 Escape using the Motorcraft Mercon LV fluid.Luckily did not have to get it from the dealer.Auto Value auto parts stores sell it as well under the Motorcraft brand name.
as always great info, now any information on the Aisin AW21 used in my 2009 ford Fusion?
From Buffalo, N.Y. Thanks for posting this video.
Great video, thanks. Your tutorial gave me the confidence boost to try it myself. I poured the old fluid back into the bottles, but I don't know what to do with it. Can it be recycled?
Yes it can be. Try your local auto parts stores.
This is an awesome video! Thanks so much! I have a 09 with 151k never changed, what is the risk of doing this at this point?
@MrSplinter345 did you chang the transmission fluid? I'm at the same problem but mechanic told me to not do it because of damage on the transmission.
@@edgarj11 I did it yes. It's seems ok. Maybe changing gears at a higher rpm than I would like. 2.5-3k. Pushing 200k on this 2011 Ford escape. Not a bad little car
@@MrSplinter345 everything still good ?thinking of doing drain and fill at 97k miles
Thanks for the information
Really appreciate it
Merry Christmas n happy new year 2016
Would the procedure for the 6F50 and 6F55 for the 2011 - 2016 Ford Explorer be the same?
Yes they are just a bigger version of the same trans
I dont find where is the oil trans filler cap and the dipstick !?
Down Air Filter
Eighth turn trick. You sir. Brilliant trick glad it wasn't just my stupid wishful thinking haha.
Brian, you didn't explain how to get the old fluid out of the torque converter. Could you expand your explanation on why or is it really needed?
Thanks, love your videos.
Oh I wish you posted this a month earlier I just spent $250 to do this.
CCL13 same here... around $205 .
Cost me $75 for my 2014 fusion you guys got beat
Very clear, helpful and informative videos! Keep up the work and thank you very much!
very good clear video *****
same process for Ford Escape 2011 ???
New transmission fluid is so hard to see on the dip stick sometimes. I wish someone would invent a dye you could safely add.
Its already bright red
It is correct.
Ford's service manual for the 2012 Fusion recommends transmission fluid change at 100k (normal driving), not 30k. Is Ford wrong?
See my other videos on why I recommend this.
Chris O The advice in this video is better.
TIKIMAN198 The lower mark is correct.
FordTechMakuloco So the tranmission of a 2011 4 cylinder XLS takes 5 qts to be topped off them?
I bought some valvoline max life atf fluid. says mercon lv on it. would that be fine?
did you use it? that what i just bought for my escape
My theory ...we came to watch a video. Meaning we probably aren't experts and need some reminders on how to do this procedure. This dude has a channel dedicated to Ford maintenance and u don't lol. Long story short use Motorcrafts shit and fulfill your destiny
Love all of your videos n advice ....curious if you recommend 5w-30 in the 2.5 Fusion or stick with 5w-20? Thanks!
change twice works real nice extra 20 bucks mercon LV vavoline
I am hoping you can answer this question. Does it have to be Motorcraft Mercon LV or can you use something like Pennzoil Platinum LV Multi-Vehicle ATF. I live in Canada and the Mercon LV at the dealer costs $15.00/ quart. There are cheaper options from different oil companies. Will they do the same or not?
So what did u use and how did it go?
@@justlg3359 I ended up using Motorcraft Mercon LV trans fluid. I got it for $11.00 per liter. It went good.
@@MarkK01 ok good, also which vehicle do you have and is it 4 cylinder or 6? And how much Quarts were used?
@@justlg3359 This was on my 2009 Ford Escape Limited with the 3.0 vs. It took 3 liters. Mine used 6 liters which is 6.34 Quarts. But I started with 5 liters to start and then I kept checking and adding once it got hot.
is the same 4f27e transmission used in the 2015 to 2016 ford transit connect and what is the life expectancy of the vehicle
very informative, well done and clearly spoken. thank you!
Sight unseen, your thoughts please.
get the codes read and we can go from there PM me on facebook.
Thanks for the video. Just a tip, is there a way to turn off the auto adjust light on your camera? It keeps alternating between light and dark. Maybe get some external lights under there?
Yup this was the early days my new videos don't do that.
THANKS FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS
one question, my truck is Mazda tribute, the procedure for the transmisión drain on Ford escape is the same ? thanks
+guero casta no yours has a 3/8" drive plug in the rear of the trans and yours take mercon V fluid.
Thanks man! You saved my #$%!!!! BTW, what camera do you use to film your videos? Very clear and great audio. Thanks again for all your videos and time.
I use my iphone 90% of the time.
Paul Edmond The directs weld together on those keeping you in gear causing you to die out.
you say to use this mercon LV in fusions. My owners manual for my 2009 2.3 L says to use FNr5 fluid. Nowhere anywhere does it say to use mercon LV in Ford Fusions.
Brad L'homme Ford fusions with the 6F35 not the fnr5 this is a 6f35 video.
You suggest a fluid change every 30miles. My 2011 Escape manual says that it doesn't need to be changed for 240K km. Can you explain? Thanks!
I have many videos on why with examples. Search Ford Transmission Tips on my channel
Let me ask you this is this a reliable transmission
I've had 3 cars with it and no trouble from the transmissions.
I have a 2010 ford escape 3.0 L V6.....that should be about 5 qts of fluid as well correct?
if you own this car get rid of it. The "sub frame" rotted out, and our tire axle collapsed WHILE DRIVING. It is an inherit flaw in the car design I learned later that FORD knows about, and did not notify the community (sound familiar?). We had to junk the car (2011) and got -0- for it. when I did this job I put in the amount I took out. Good luck.
@@dananddyan no one should have to jack up the car, remove the tires, and climb under to scrub the undercarriage. I could see if the car was subject to a hurricane, but it was not. and bought new from the factory. Not used. I appreciate your company loyalty, but I saw the part. It was a shameful engineering embarrassment.
@FordTechMakuloco Can you please upload a video of a transmission fluid change on a Focus with 2L 5 speed manual transmission? Model year 2015 or equivalent?! Once again, your videos are amazing!Cheers from Canada.
How many quarts are needed for a 2006 Ford Fusion SE ? Does it use Mercon LV ?
Very good video......I am going to be doing this. I have a 2006 escape.... the owners manual says 10 quarts trans fluid.... is that correct???... seems like a lot.
Also...... should I just go with mercon v ??
And of couse, always check for leak and check the correct level oil.
My mechanic did a transmission change and he didn’t measure what he drained. I’m getting hard shifts sometimes from 1-2 but usually 2-3 when the trans gets hot. Please advise. Thanks Sir.
