My man is all grown up 😢. He’s heading out to Sony events now 🎉🎉🎉
The perfect all around lens. Not too wide, not too tele, steady f/2.8, very good close focusing throughout the range, acceptable weight, excellent optically and priced just right. They will sell them by the bucketloads.
True from a certain point of view ... but at two pounds it is a monster.
It doesn't have stabilization, so for me as a ZV E10 owner, I'll have to pass
@@_HalfDuck_ i see no point in getting it for apsc
Theres the 17-70 for you , this was a stupid comment imo
@@_HalfDuck_ I don't think they ever intended to sell it to this kind of clientele...plus every reputable full frame mirrorless body out there already has 5+ stops of stabilization. TBH in-lens stabilization is a relic from the DSLR days and is a waste of money (and weight/expense/complexity) for modern mirrorless cameras.
too heavy
I might be on of the only ones, but I have the Sony 24-70 GM II, and I use the 24mm range a lot. I've noticed I use the standard ranges 24, 35-50, and 70 mm. I couldn't imagine losing that 24mm semi wide angle focal range to me indoors. My next two lenses will be the Sony 70-200mm GM II, and then perhaps the Sigma 85mm F1.4.
Perfect combo. Sigma 85 1.4 is just from another world
Exactly, won't give up the 24mm. Unfazed by this release. I wish they would make more 20-70mm options. Imagine a 20-70mm F2.8 😮
@@msculacthat 20-70 f2.8 would be extremely big and extremely heavy. 🥲
Oh love that backdrop - where was the shirtless pic of me in the pool??
😂 I’ll let you share that one!
I'm a simple man. I got an email from B&H/Adorama that a new sigma lens dropped.... I came straight to Arthur's channel. :)
Sigma kicked it out of the ball park on this lens ❤❤
Ultimate wedding lens
Straight up! That and sports and wildlife. If you film weddings you don’t want to be all up in peoples faces 😂
For weddings/events my dreamteam combo would be a 16-35 2.8 or the Tamron 17-28 combined with the 35-150 on a 2nd body... you can cover everything with that
Ok. I have the Sigma 28-70 and the Samyang 35-150. The Samyang is about 200 grams heavier than this new Sigma. I’m really happy with what I have and excited about this new release at the same time.
Gotta say, im also a fanboy of the Tamron 28-75 G2, even on my A6700! I also have the Sigma 18-50 for something light and agile.
I love how Full Frame get the same love apsc users been having with the Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8
Awesome video as always.
That's not really correct as f2.8 on APS-C is equivalent to f4 on full frame, so it's really like a 25-105/4 which all brands already have. You have to apply the crop factor to the aperture too. There's a reason why the Tamron is only half the weight compared to the Sigma.
I have it myself for Fuji btw and I love it, but I also know what I'm giving up compared to a full frame 2.8.
I'd love to see an APSC version of something similar to this. Especially at f2.8. Id love to see Sony update the 18-110 F4 G oss pz to f2.8 or better.
There is, it'd called the Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8
If you mean 2.8 specifically then there is Tamron 17-70 2.8 which is like 25-105/4 on FF.
I opted for the Tamron 35-150 to replace my GM II zooms after working with a DP on a 4 day shoot. He had it glued to his FX6 and I had the 24-70. We never needed to pull out the 70-200. I need that longer end.
Yea, sell your 24-70 and buy a forklift to carry that Sigma around :)
For Sony APS-C, I am sticking with my Sony 18-135 OSS.
Thanks, I'm sure the whole world will drop their jaw at this knowledge.
@@fotografalexandernikolis Lets not forget that Arthur asked for comments about what we liked, so I made one. By bringing to light two lenses that were released in the past, it might bring attention to them for new photographers to the Sony line up. For those two reasons my original comment is valid and deserving. So, me and others do not appreciate the negative tone in your reply. Please find something else more positive to do with your time. Share your photography experience so others may benefit from it.😉
I owned and sold the 35-150 from Tamron, great lens but I needed prime apertures for my gigs. Cant wait till more companies hit that 1.8 zoom threshold.
Very helpful!! Thank you!!
This is probably the first video I've seen from your stables without your wife featured 😊.
I must admit....I miss his wife and kids in the videos.
His wife would have been the TOP model. The kids would be used to test the autofocus of lenses and cameras.
perfect companion to 16-28 f2.8
same i have 16-28 f2.8 and im thinking of tamron 35-150mm but this 28-105mm really impressed me
@@ajitshrestha143 Im on similar boat, Im considering selling my Sigma 24-70 mm F2.8 Mark II and upgrade to it.
@ today i got my sigma 35mm and i sold my 16-28 and got 24-70mm mark ii..
Thanks for the review, but I will stick with my Sony 24-105 f4. For me the 28mm is not wide enough. I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and the extra 4mm at the wide end of the Sony makes a big difference. The Sony also has image stabilisation and is about 2/3rd of the size (665 grams compared to 950g). Yes, it's not 2.8 but I haven't missed and I have a 50mm 1.8 if I need it.
100% on the extra 4mm at the wide end.
Alright. Now give us the same thing for APSC shooters :) (smaller, lighter, cheaper)
Tamron 17-70mm f2.8.
I think the same. I want this same focal length from Sigma. I don't want the Tamron. A newer 56 from Sigma would be awesome too
@@Re-InCarNationI have that and it is good, but the 70 end gets pretty fuzzy and glowy wide open. It’s on the a6700 80% of the time though
@@Re-InCarNation I want to see one from Sigma
@@Re-InCarNation I would prefer a Sigma/Tamron 17-70 2.8 without stabilization, smaller, lighter and maybe with internal zooming
35-150 f2-2.8 is one of the best one and done
My 16-35 and 35-150 combo imo is still a better choice.
Even if this is a 2.8, I'd still go for a 24-105 F4 for video because of the image stabilization. 24mm is also perfect for what I need. 28mm is kinda tight, I got rid of my 28-75 because the 28mm isn't wide enough, so no reason for me to get a 28-105.
I have the 35-150 by Tamron. I really value the larger apertures at shorter focal lengths. When I shoot events I’ll typically have a 24mm prime, and the 35-150mm. This sigma looks great, but doesn’t really replace or enhance my setup.
Really with the 35-150mm was lighter though… that’s reason enough to consider this lens.
Really, I would love if Sigma made a 55-75 f1.8 to complement the 28-45mm f1.8.
i've been having fun with the 35-150 on the 6700. I wish there was an APSC version to save on weight. Sony 18-105 F4 is still my general purpose video lens.
I was with you up until @8:41.....I don't know how anyone could rationally think this is a replacement to a 70-200. The difference between 100mm and 200mm is just too significant to discredit. This lens is more of an upgrade for someone consistently using a 24-105 f/4.
Nice lens but I'm sticking with my Sony G 18-105 f/4. Honestly, with today's denoise apps and the ability to easily select backgrounds and blur them, an F2.8 doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. But maybe that's just me. My travel kit is Sony A7RIII, Sigma 14-24 F/2.8, Sony G 18-105 f/4 and the Sigma 100-400 F/5-6.3. Thanks for the excellent video.
Good idea, but seems to big to travel for me, but it’s sure nice to know that there is tons of options for sony
I still cant pick this over the tamron 35-150 . you just get much more. As a pro photographer, we would still go with the tamron
Hi sir i am from India,,,,, I purchased this lens 10/112024 for my wedding season i use this lens almost 11 wedding its nice lens i am highly satisfied to work this lens ,,,,, you can say that the one in one lens for wedding photography
The Sigma is just as long as the Tamron 35-150mm 2-2.8 and only 200g lighter. That was already too big/heavy for me.
The Sigma is interesting. Difficult decision.
I currently use the Tamron 20-40 2.8, 28-75 2.8 and 70-180mm 2.8.
How sharp are the Tamrons?
Very sharp. Watch videos. Of course, with 400% zoom at the edges they don't come close to 2-3 times as expensive Sony GM (I have two fixed focal lengths). But more than sufficient for any hobby photographer. But they are compact, lightweight and affordable. @@finaltouchpro648
i love tamron. the 17-28 is incredible. the 150-500mm (had it for a bit) is legendary, but it isn't useful for my line of work (70-180 is better suited for me).
The Tamron 35-150mm is still better for me. It covers all of the most common portrait focal lengths. I also carry the FE 20mm f/1.8 and that is all I need. There is no way the 28-105 replaces the 70-200.
I agree. as a Pro photographer , I get way more and by comparison, the tamron I feel is still sharper
What about image quality and af compare to Tamron and sigma24-70
agree..im using the ramron 35-150mm and tamron 17-28mm..my only 2 lens when i travel..
How the image/video quality as it's 2+ year-old model
@joysonhd It is fantastic. I haven’t had any issues with my Tamron 35-150mm
Will this be for Fuji also? 😨
the lens of my dreams for the price from GM2
I have the 24-105 f4 for Nikon and it is a tank!
When is the APSC zoom coming out? 😭😭😭
Great review though.
Which one?
U guys already got the Tamron 17-70, which is even better with 25,5 to 105 at 2.8. ;-).
@@marcelkrownmotorworks9842 You gotta apply the crop factor to the aperture as well, so it's more like an f/4 lens.
Same reason as while most phones actually have ~f1.8 aperture, they don't let in as much light or get the same short DOF as the equivalent focal length at f1.8 on FF.
I would love to get it.
How does this compare to the Sony E PZ 18-105 F4? I realize the Sony isn't as fast. But it's a little wider at the bottom end. It can also be had for half the cost (new) and a quarter the price used. And the sony can be had for APSC.
The Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 is the perfect comparison when you add the crop factor
That , "old", whatever that means is still an excellent lens. Have no intention of selling mine, which spends most of its time attached to my a6400.
Obviously a personal comment, however I Really need the 24mm at the wide angle end, as dof isn't vital for the wider shooting I do, would be perfectly content with f4 + very effective Ibis.
How does this compare to the 35-150 tamron 2.0-2.8? I dont care about weight or size personally.
Your thoughts? They are quite comparable in price.
Arthur:
You are the best reference, well, if not the best, one of the best sources of information about Sony APS-C cameras and lenses, but...
A question: why don't you do reviews of Yongnuo lenses? From what I've seen, they are great, below Sigma of course, but very competitive and at a good price (the problem is that almost nobody does reviews like the ones you do... hehe).
Best regards
I’ll add them to my list, thank you for the suggestion!
would be very interested in a comparison of this against the Tamron 35-150 2-2.8
Do you think this lens would perform well on the a6700 even though it’s a fulI frame? Would love something in this focal range but can’t find anything like that on the market. Should I pull the trigger or do you think in the near future sigma will make something for apsc worth waiting for? Great video as always!
this is actually tamron 18-70 APSC for full frame
How do you like this compared to the Sony G 18-105 f/4?
The thing is a bazooka… I decided to switch from my Sony A7iii to a Fuji x-t20 because of the smaller and great glassed available for the X mount. I’m an amateur photographer though, this is a great all around lens for a pro for sure.
I’m happy with my decision for a smaller footprint, bout the 18-55mm f2.8-4 (best kit lens ever made for any system) 7artizans 35mm f1.4, and couple of vintage teles, super Takumar 135mm f2.5 and 200mm f4. Probably those 3 primes takes less space in the bag than this Sigma.
I still keep my Sony for specific more professional work, paired with the trustworthy Tamron 28-75mm that is so much smaller than the sigma 24-70
Is Sigma comparing performance to the 24-70 mark I or mark II?
Mark I
Really like the idea of this lens but size is big issue especially when I use my compact C bodies. Maybe a lens I would consider for my A7RV. Curious how well it balances on a body like that. Thank you and take care.
Tamron 17-70 2.8 (25-107 on crop sensor. )Only weighs 525 grams, and it's a better lens in every way!
Big FACTS!!!
@@HagaishiSama yep. Slap it on your Fuji and forget the rest.
Can Sigma create an 18-70 APSC lens (or 18-135??) to compliment my 18-50? It's such a brilliant lens, I just want it to go a little further but not being the big boy that the Tamron 17-70 is.
Best one and done? What about the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8?
Yeah, for $400 more, I’d rather go with the Tamron.
Pair it with a 16mm, 20mm or a 16-35mm prime and you’re done, especially if you like shooting at the longer end. That 105mm is nowhere near the Tamron’s 150mm.
Agreed, love my Tamron. Suppose depends how much someone would need 28mm & slightly less weight
Tamron is too telephoto for one and done. If 50mm is standard it has only 35mm under it while it has 70-90-105-135-150 on the tele end. Not very balanced...eh?
@@ArturMarinhoFeV More like carry that lens whole day and you are done XD
Is it too heavy to tripod mount, considering it doesn't have a tripod collar?
Yuge!
Arthur, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 ii versus this Sigma 28-105 F2.8. Not the obvious range differences or the price, but what about the picture quality where the 2 lens overlap? Like from 28-70, which of these 2 lenses actually has better image quality? Now THAT would help me decide which of these two choices I will be buying.
The 28-105 has better image quality than the original 24-70. But the new Sigma 24-70 II is a step better than the 28-105 in terms of optics and build quality.
@@ArthurR thank you, I value your opinion and this helps me make my decision. And thanks for what you do. I know it takes a lot of time but you do good work and I appreciate your videos.
This lens looks awesome! I was planning to get a 24-70 and 85, but this one covering all those focal lengths, I might just get this one
Question though, do you recommend that I still get an 85mm f1.4 for my portrait work, or this might be enough for bokeh with the compression from the 105 end?
on my a6700 would be crazy good!!
Great lans i love
November 2024: This lens is attractive but for shooting in reduced lighting (ballet) I need a stabilized lens.
January 5, 2025: update on this comment. I have the 28-105 now and it has been perfect for my use cases. I use the 28-105 on my A74 which gives me 28-105. Then I also carry my a6700 APSC body with the Tamron 70-180. But when the Tamron lens is mounted on an APSC body it becomes a 105-270mm. So these two lenses give me (using two bodies) 28-270 f/2.8.
The wide end at 28mm isn't a problem because I'm shooting live balet performances from 30 to 80 feet from the stage. 28mm covers the entire stage easily.
No it's not stabilized but I have the ability to hand hold and get well better than 90& sharp images. I actually think the weight of the camera and lens help reduce camera shake.
Can you set the aperture on the camera as well or only on the lens?
PetaPixel did a great review and found the bokeh quite busy. Compromises were made, which is understandable.
It’s wild, I’m sure a lot of us would agree that 24 many times isn’t wide enough, so I don’t know why I’d settle for 28.
Sony event? What model preview was that?
was there a comparison w/ the Sony 24-105 G? Skipped around & didn't find it.
Looks great but the price is out of my range. I just picked up the 18-105 Sony f4. Maybe after I save up some moolah, I'll look at it again.😅
is there a RF version?
Is this par focal?
I’m not down with it. I’m so consistently reaching for my Tammy 28-75, I kind of feel sorry for my 5 other lenses that don’t receive near the love. But if I can get another 30mm on the long end, kind of “for free,” I was curious to learn more about this new attractive stranger in town.
But that seems like enough extra size and weight that it’s probably not worth the added 30mm. Especially mounted on a 43MB a7Riii, such that I’ve got some solid cropping options, making my 28-75 feel longer than it is.
Sell ur 24-70 ! - fine. Thanks for the advice. What advice do you have for the people who are going to purchase it ?
Sigma making a half assed Canon version of a lens is surprising? :) They have been doing that for decades, they are literally a cheaper/lower quality Canon alternative, but of course most people heard about cameras existing in the last 5-6 years and they think that Sigma is just magically cheaper :)
Eventually RF?
I wish this was on RF mount 😢
If you're looking for a lens that you can take with you everywhere, anything over 500g doesn't make sense to buy - unless photography is your livelihood. I have a Sony A7C paired with a Sony 55mm 1.8 Zeiss and that's about the maximum I can carry. When I don't want to carry equipment with me, I just use my cell phone for convenience. Anything beyond that loses its meaning and only extinguishes the desire for photography.
I feel lenses above 70 need OSS. im looking to upgrade my Sigma 28-70 to something else in this range but its really hard to focus on video at 70 even with IBIS
I have a the 28-105 zoom for my Canon F1 except it is much smaller.
RF 24-105 is internal zoom though, has IS & a lot sharper.
Half a kg more, twice as expensive, not available for L or E just as this lens will never be available for RF, so why are you even commenting?
@@Vantrakter Why are you commenting?
@@VantaBlackhole Because your comment made no sense
@@Vantrakter Maybe someone is considering which system to go for & the sigma may become available on RF. Also, comparing a lens to a rival is pretty standard.
The first video I've seen pointing that this lens is better than Sigma 24-70 2.8 II.
What do you think of A7C + 28-105mm? Is it usabile?
With a strap it wasn’t too much to carry around all day. It’s a big lens, but not 70-200 big.
Is this lens compatible for Sony apsc ?
Yes, but because of the crop factor, it will be an equivalent 42-157mm lens. So it would not be a good choice as a main lens since you would not have a wide angle of view. For an all-around lens, the Sigma 18-50mm or Tamron 17-70mm would be better suited to your camera.
@@trekkeruss thanks for your helpful words
We’ll if that were a 24 to 105 like the Sony it would be great.
So, a full frame equivalent range of having the Tamron 17-70mm on APSC which is a much more portable option!
And also much darker. It's like having an f/4.2 in full frame. Not bad for outdoor casual shooting but too low if you're shooting indoors or are a professional.
and now i want to put it on my apsc
🤔 What’s your point here? That apsc lenses are more portable? Cheaper? … better?
@@Vaidanis. It still lets in f/2.8 light, and f/4 is absolutely professional if you are actually good at taking photos
@@Vaidanis. You don’t understand how that works. It lets in the same amount of light. A 50 2.8 APSC & 50 2.8 FF would have the exact same exposure, just different DOF.
yeh, would love it but i cant afford this lens in Aust
For me 28mm is just not wide enough for a do all lens. Will wait for tamron to make a 24-90mm f2.8
I dont understand why you dont compare this to the Sony 24-105. That lens is the most relevant to compare it to imo.
Hopefully Sigma will release a Nikon Z version soon…
Combine this with their 16-28 f/2.-8 and yhou´re good to go
it's all good. only a little heavy any sometimes if not lock it.. lens losen down.
I have the tamron 28 to 200. It is meh but versatile.
any1 traveled w/ it? too heavy after a few hrs or still ok?
Though a beautiful lens but this does not replace the 24-70 for an event photographer .
im gonna sell my 24 70 for this one!
This is very nice, but I love my Sony 24-105. It’s old, but I got it for like $600 in practically new condition, and it takes great pics.
I used that old Sony for about 1.5 hours straight for a behind the scenes video, and it’s a great little lens. If F4 is enough, so is that lens.
Yes, it is a very nice lens and it has ibis too . However, other photographers prefer that f2.8. So it depends on your needs.
Don't be sucked in by GAS , if that lens does the job, why not keep it ?
Next video: Why you NEED a 24-70.
2017 - 9 years?
I was thinking the same thing 😂😂
Tamron is much better in recent years with much more versatile zoom lengths and weight. Not sure why Sigma is slowly trying to compete with Sony now and keep increase their prices and making their lens bulkier and heavier.
Damn, and I thought my Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 is massive.
Sigma, Sony, Tamron ... why dont you make 24-120 f4 like Nikon has since decades? I need such lens.
Min 6.54 😊🥰🥰🥰
I still prefer 35150 over 28-105
The lens like 24-85mm can be all in one. This lens is better than Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, just with 105mm. Hmm.
w math at the start
